Every time there is a freeze in India-Pakistan relations, a section of
the population goes out of its way to create a false dichotomy between
the two nations.
The efforts extend to denial of visas, expulsion of artists,
cancellation of people-to-people ties, all in the name of national
interest. It is completely
overlooked that the cultures that form a common bond between us
predate the creation of our countries by several centuries. Most of
the languages spoken
there — like Punjabi, Urdu and Pashto — have their equivalent forms
here. Many of their art forms — like ghazal and qawwali styles of
singing, kathak and
bhangra dances — have an Indian connection. Naturally, themes that
form part of our cinema find their reflection there and vice-versa. By
extension, artistes
from there become part of our cinema.

A look at two films — Dosti and Hamrahi — released in the mid-60s
reveals that though Pakistan’s identity was premised on an opposition
to India on religious
grounds, the concerns of its ordinary citizens were no different from
our own. Dosti (1964), was a classical tale of the triumph of the
underdog, made
during the Nehruvian-era of idealism and hope. Hamrahi (1966) was only
slightly different in context, set as it was in the aftermath of the
India-Pakistan
war of 1965.

A viewing of the two films reveals that though the two nations were in
conflict at their borders, their problems — poverty, illiteracy,
unemployment, lack
of health facilities — were similar. Both Dosti andHamrahi are about
two teenagers, disabled by fate and accident, helping each other add
meaning to their
lives. Ramu (Dosti) and Naami (Hamrahi) lose their mobility in
accident, their mothers to illness, and their education to poverty.
When desperation makes
them hit the streets, they have an encounter with exceptional talent:
Ramu meets Mohan, while Naami meets Yousaf—both without eyesight but
blessed with
natural singing talent. The street-singing of the blind troubadours,
and the money and recognition they earn, helps the lead protagonists
achieve educational
excellence.

Both films strive to create the prototype of an ideal citizen out of
their lead characters. As a result, they now come across as moral
science lessons,
as testified by their different aspects: Physical handicap or poverty
need not act as an impediment to pursuing education; an ideal friend
is a selfless
companion; a compassionate teacher can be more than just a mentor.
Ramu’s mother wants him to emulate leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and
Subhas Chandra
Bose, while Naami’s mother wants him to be as accomplished as the
‘Quaid-e-Azam’ (Mohammad Ali Jinnah) and and Allama Iqbal. However,
what prevents the
films from turning into a documentary is the music, and the melodrama.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s tunes, with a young R. D. Burman playing the
harmonica for Ramu, Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics and Mohammad Rafi’s
singing catapulted
Dosti’s album to timelessness. The music of Hamrahi, composed by
Tassaduq Hussain whose musical roots were in the Hindustani Patiala
gharana, sounds fairly
similar. The lyrics, the tunes, the singing style, all sound so
identical that it is easy to see the two albums as part of a
continuum.

included i.e. also take RBI officials in CC while writing a mail in
this regard.

Subject: [AI] Rural Development Ministry: Govt plans allowance for disabled
people who get jobs

The Narendra Modi government plans an incentive for disabled people to
get jobs, in the latest addition to the slew of benefits for rural
India.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/govt-plans-allowance-for-disabled-people-who-get-jobs/story-NnjQwtpkgdcXHBHrxB44oJ.html
A minimum of Rs 26,000 will be given to each disabled people who
participate in the government’s ambitious skill development programme
and get a job. “Be it private sector or a government job, a disabled
candidate will get these benefits,” said rural development secretary
Amarjit Sinha.

The latest benefit comes amid the centre’s renewed outreach to the
disabled people who form 2.1% of India’s population. With these
incentives, the government hopes it will encourage disabled people to
join skill developments courses that are aimed to reap the demographic
dividend. India has 21 million people suffering from one form of
disability or the other.

The incentives include accommodation allowance of Rs 3000 for 2 to 6
months. Uniform allowance of Rs 3000 as disabled people has higher
chances of soiling their dresses. Rs 5000 to buy wheel chairs or
calipers or Rs 2000 for teaching aids like reading softwares.

“We have also identified areas where disabled people can work easily
and deliver best results. If given proper training, they can get
better jobs and earn more money,” said Sinha.

The latest step for the welfare of disabled people comes after the
Parliament enacted the law on Rights of persons with Disabilities. The
law conferred several rights and entitlements to disabled persons.

“Department of empowered persons with disabilities may kindly explore
the feasibility for providing for the provisions as part of any skill
development provisions,” says a note of the rural development
ministry.

The government has also asked different departments to make offices
and training centres more disabled-friendly.

The rural ministry submitted its proposals to the Common Norms
Committee of the skill development ministry to take the final call.

“We have also identified areas where disabled people can work easily
and deliver best results. If given proper training, they can get
better jobs and earn more money,” said Sinha.

[AI] Braille Embossing Service / Tactile Embossing services.

2016-10-18 Thread Hardik Shah
Dear Members,

My name is Hardik Shah, I am the Managing Trustee of Samrat Ben Jamnadas
Shah Charitable Trust. We are an NGO and have started providing services of
Braille Production. But wait before you think this is just another mail
from a Printing Press i suggest you read this mail carefully and form your
Opinion.

We all know that Braille is the access to literacy for the blind person.

The value of literacy in today's world is well documented and accepted. For
a person who is blind, Braille provides an opportunity to develop literacy
skills just as print materials provide such an experience for the person
with sight. However, Braille has unique differences that bring with them
challenges for providing quality literacy opportunities. Just as accurate
production of print material is critical to the development of high
standards of literacy skills for the person with sight, developing the same
high standards of literacy skills for the person who is blind likewise
requires production of accurate Braille materials.

Poorly Brailled materials or inconsistency in Braille formats will cause
confusion and slow reading, impeding the persons ability to grasp concepts
or keep up with classmates. Poorly prepared materials can sabotage the best
instruction by producing confusion, frustration, acquisition of incomplete
concepts or acquisition of poor reading strategies, all of which result in
producing a poor, reluctant reader. Just as there are nuances to learning
to read print material, there are nuances and complexities to learning the
Braille system. It is essential that students have access to materials that
have been produced by individuals knowledgeable in Braille and tactile
graphic production and that these materials are checked for accuracy.

Jamnadas Trust shall cater to the needs of Braille production across India
with the Following Features.

We shall provide Braille on Paper as well as Plastic Sheets. We shall
encourage all to have Braille on Plastic as it is more durable in Quality,
no effect of Dust, Moisture, Braille getting debossed etc.

Braille books can be printed in all Indic languages.

Braille Books will contain all the graphical content which means that
Tactile images shall be a part of the books itself. Yes All the books that
one wants us to print shall have the tactile images.

Tactile Images for all standard maps and standard graphics shall be printed
and given.

In the same context let me also introduce to you about our 2.5 D Tactile
Embossing and regular 3D Printing services for anyone who needs them. there
is a difference between a tactile embossing on a embosser and a 2.5 D
Tactile Embossing.

Any other needs in Braille production can be attended to.

We shall encourage people associated with colleges and institutes to ask us
for samples of our Braille on Plastic sheets since the durability of the
brailled plastic sheets will be much longer than the same printed on paper.

Cost of the Braille on plastic sheets is marginally high. (Approx Rs 2.5
per page for a page with both sides printing)

So Please spread the word and get your printing needs served by us. we have
the capacity to print 15000 pages per month and have one institution as our
First Customer for whom we are printing 15 School Books. We do not ask for
advance payments from any one until we have delivered our Printing. We are
a Charitable Trust.

All the books that come to us for printing shall automatically be made
available as an audio book. so that the sender and others can use the same.
more features can be discusses if in case it is of interest to individual
users. All are requested to communicate mostly through Emails as the core
team has their activities to earn the bread for themselves during the day.
The production team is full time though.

Thanks in Advance and Cheers to all.

(Team: Ashwini Sharma, Kavita, Rahul Sharma, Jigna, Rupesh )

Please send all your queries on my personal Email Id. I can be able to
share the details as per your Interests.

Regards,

Hardik Shah

Re: [AI] Transfering data amongst work sheets in MS excel

2016-10-18 Thread Rahul Gambhir
Hello Vamshi,

I am presuming that you have account number in each record, if yes
then vlookup is the best solution you are using to accomplish the
desired result.
By using VLOOKUP you can achieve both the objectives; of adding values
from the previous worksheet and identify the newly added accounts.

Re: [AI] a news article from The Hindu on inaccessable Kolkata’s Durga Puja pandals

2016-10-18 Thread avinash shahi
The touch is the touchstone for understanding others; be it
individuals or the objects. One could corroborate this claim by
meeting people who are deafblind. 'Touch the art' should become a
movement if blind people are to achieve accessibility.

[AI] Rural Development Ministry: Govt plans allowance for disabled people who get jobs

2016-10-18 Thread avinash shahi

Re: [AI] to book railway ticket with disabled I card

2016-10-18 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
whenever, you book the ticket using your concessional card details,
you are choosing the category as handicapped or escort if applicable
in serial number 1 and 2. for instance, if you are travelling with
escort then you are choosing the category as handicapped in first
serial and then in the 2nd serial, you are choosing category as
escort. these categories are displayed in combo box. so I assume that
you are already selecting these categories. like wise, if you are
selecting your child who is 5 years old, you have to select the
category as genral for serial number 3.

As per the railway fare policy, if you fill the details of any child
who is 5 years and above and fill the details in the columns from
passenger 1 to 6, you will be charged full fare and separate deat will
be allotted. So when you attempt to fill the details of your child for
instance, after filling up the name and age, when you attempt to
select the gender of your child from the next combo box, there itself
one message will popup on your screen alerting you that you will be
charged full fare for the child for allotting the seat. You have to
press enter on ok button and proceed with the rest of the details.

I have just now tested and it works fine.

Do get back again in case of any doubts.
Hope this helps.

Amen! you are right. why there is a taboo when it comes to touching?
the notion of touch needs to be politicized. And this could only be
done by blind people and those who are deafblind.

disabled.
Subject: [AI] a news article from The Hindu on inaccessable Kolkata’s Durga
Puja pandals

Disability access ‘worsens’ in Kolkata’s Durga Puja pandals
On October 9, when the city was soaking up the Durga Puja festivities,
Rubia Chatterjee, national gold medallist para athlete, decided to go
pandal hopping with other para athletes. She was shocked to find that
she could not enter many of the pandals . “It was horrible. I was
accompanied by another para athlete Sandhya Mondal, who was walking
with crutches. She fell down at various places,” Ms. Chaterjee told
The Hindu . Ms. Chaterjee, who was a part of a group of ten
sportspersons, had informed major Puja pandals of their visit. Many of
the pandals have average footfalls of 4 lakh people per day and are
constructed at a cost of several crores of rupees. Ms. Chatterjee and
Ms. Sandhya found no wheelchairs or ramps or even volunteers to help
them. The ‘Disability Access to Durga Puja Pandals in Kolkata: 2016’
survey of 14 marquees conducted by the Kolkata-based Civilian Welfare
Foundation (CWF) echoes these findings. CWF’s Abhirupa Kar, who has
been involved in documenting disability access at Durga Pujas pandals
for the past three years, said that the situation has worsened this
time instead of improving . “There is so much competition among Durga
Puja organisers for awards but the basic question of accessibility to
the disabled is far from receiving the serious attention of
organisers,” she told The Hindu . The report points out that giving
the disabled a restricted view of a pandal or asking them visit only
in the mornings just shows the organisers’ “discrimination, and lack
of sensitivity and understanding with regards to the disabled
population”. The report also points out that most of the pandals have
staircases, “thus rejecting the person with a disability to the major
attractions of the pandals ”. Ms. Kar said that despite the Central
government’s Accessible India campaign, no effort has been made to

[AI] a news article from The Hindu on inaccessable Kolkata’s Durga Puja pandals

2016-10-18 Thread Boopathi P
Ms. Kar said that despite the Central
government’s Accessible India campaign, no effort has been made to
include the disabled part in the celebrations for the festive season.
“The situation relating to accessibility for the disabled has not
improved over the past three years,” she said. “At a time when the
State government wants to showcase Durga Puja as a major carnival, it
cannot remain ignorant to the organisers’ apathy in keeping a
significant population out the celebrations.”

[AI] new Railway ID card

2016-10-18 Thread Tamil Selvan தமிழ்
Dear Friends,

I am Tamil Selvan from bangalore.

I want to get new Railway ID card so that i can book it in IRCTC.

can anyone tell me how to get new Railway ID Card in Bangalore.
I am 60% orthopaedically disabled post polio residual paralysis.
Previously when i approached the government doctor for railway concession
certificate he told that i am not eligible for certificate as i can walk
without the assistance of escort.
but now i heard that with highcourt judgement we can travel/book ticket
even without the escort also.
but to book the ticket with new railway ID card, and to get new railway ID
card i think we need to produce the concession certificate issued by ortho
surgeon from government hospital.
in this situtation how can i get new ID card?
can anyone suggest how to go about this.

thanks

R.P. Tamil Selvan

Re: [AI] Martine Powers reports in the Washington post: How Metro works for the blind riders in America

Accidents so caused were due to gaps outside the cars. I'm afraid
similar problem is with Delhi Metro as well. It is unlikely that any
one will fall as there is definite warning form of having no floor of
the train over there and person who is using white cane will relies as
soon as s/he taps the stick.
