[AFMUG] OT Movie Review

2023-03-30 Thread Chuck McCown via AF

Tetris

True story. I really enjoyed it. I think I watched it on Apple.

Alexey Pajitnov, the guy the created Tetris came to my company in Illinois
in the early to mid 1990s checking on a development project I was doing for
a company in Petaluma. It was called Marin Telemanagement Corporation. MTC
That is where I got the name for my company, McCown Technology Corporation.
MTC. So my main customer was also MTC.

But I digress, he introduced himself, and said he had 15 minutes of fame
once as he wrote Tetris. I was not terribly aware of the game, I had seen
it once at a university computer lab. Later HP sold me an oscilloscope with
a Tetris Easter Egg.

At least that is what the guy told me. He was Russian. It was right after
the real guy immigrated. I am choosing to believe him.

If you are a Dune fan, the subtitles ( if you turn them on) are nice. Much of
the dialog is very quiet. Seeing the odd words is fun. Hearing the
pronunciation is interesting too. They did a great job on the ornithopters.

Well, she never revealed her source, and by process of elimination they
took a stab that it was the FBI.
.

So they had to fabricate that part of the story, but what the newspaper
published is a fact in evidence, so they didn’t , couldn’t really, hype
that.

An article quotes people who knew Kathy Scruggs backing up how the movie
portrayed her.

Capt Kangaroo was my guy when I was a kid. I think Mr. Rogers came
along later. I barely remember Howdy Doody and a show called Hoot
Nanny.

As a kid I didn’t watch Mr. Rogers, he was just TOO
nice. (= boring)

I was more into Garfield Goose. Maybe that was a local
Chicago thing since it was on WGN.

And Mr. Wizard. Sheesh, today he would probably be
arrested as a pedophile. Did kids come over to visit Mr. Rogers?
Yep, he’d be in jail too.

PG
probably. No foul language, a minor amount of violence. No sex or
nudity. Just a story about a guy who had issues with his father.
Based on a true story. He was a writer assigned to do a piece on Mr.
Rogers.

Younger kids will
not get it at all. They would be totally bored I think. Teens may
appreciate it, especially if they are having issues with their parents.

I watched Captain Kangaroo, but I felt like I related to Mr.
Greenjeans more. Maybe I'm more of a Soupy Sales kind of guy.
BTW - Interesting interview Gale King did with Tom Hanks. He said
he was terrified of doing this part because Mr. Rogers was so well
known and almost universally loved. Fred Rogers, by all accounts
was really playing himself (i.e. he was no put on).

With a plot that goes up and down more than a toilet seat at a bad
Mexican restaurant, and a more errors in science than any attempt at
sci-fi movies in the last 20 years, I think that AD ASTRA will fade
rapidly from the box office. Save your $$ and get it in two weeks on
youtube. Matt Damon and George Cloney are comfortably safe in the lead
for Rat Pack sci-fi movies...

If you are a Springsteen fan, you will probably enjoy it.
It is not about him but how his music affected a young Pakistani man in the
UK.
Based on a true story.

It was fun, not regretting spending the money to see it.--

Fun is buying a piece of construction equipment at Richie Bros, fixing it up,
sand blast and paint, new decals. Then using it to make lotsa money. That is
fun.

In the winter I ski now and then.
Designing new stuff is fun.

Working on an all-electric figure 8 machine for microfiber as well as a vapor
phase air chiller for large air compressors. And a hydraulic add on to reel
trailers to make them power reel trailers. Lots of projects. Some I even
forget I am doing at times.

This is the only list serv and only “social media” I inhabit.

[AFMUG] OT Movie Review

2019-08-15 Thread Chuck McCown
I am ashamed I paid good, hard earned money to watch “Good Boys”.

I think the demographic is men who still have a mental age of 12.
It had some very funny moments.

Think of “Superbad” for 6th graders.

Several memorable funny moments.

Maybe watch it when it streams and there is nothing else on. And when the kids
are not in the room. And when nobody else is in the room. And when you can
erase your viewing history.

Ok, not quite that bad. Very hard to describe.
Seriously stupid funny, but mostly stupid.

The Farewell

Slow, draggy. Not Crazy Rich Asians by any stretch. A bit of a yawn. Would
be OK to stream. Worth streaming.

But the thing that redeemed it in my mind is a version of Beethoven’s Sonata
No. 8 in C minor Op. 13 "Pathetique" 2nd movement From concert No. 3
I grew up listening to this on a foot powered player piano.

First time my future son in law came from England to visit my daughter he
landed at night. Most of my kids went to pick him up and take him to a hotel.
It was next to a theater playing a Vin Diesel movie XXX. He thought we had put
him in a seedy area of town and was going to get murdered. (As his family had
predicted).

The nearest one of those is 118 miles (Rocklin, CA). That would be about
3 hours each way, depending on traffic.

[AFMUG] OT Movie Review

Science Fiction “High Life”

Two thumbs down down down.

Zero budget for a space flick. Lots of dryer hose and liquid tight.
Space suits that don’t have seals for the helmets (looks like burlap in the
back).

The story line/plot was minimally OK but it was long and the obviously cheap
cheap cheap effects ruin it for nerds.

Weird gratuitous one way sex scene with Jullitte Binoche could have been
slightly interesting but is was just gross and disturbing.

Don’t waste money on this. --

Cleaning out a bunch of books and taking them to an annual charity

Have they seen the original animated version? It has been kind of buried
because the depiction of the roustabouts and the jive-talking crows are
considered racist. On the other hand I always thought the lesson of the

Yes, totally new. I was astounded at the amount of very high resolution
footage they had. Really good footage of Buzz Aldrin backing out of the LM.
Really good footage of the last 15 seconds where Neil is hunting for a good
place to land. I am guessing I have only seen half or at the most 2/3rds of
this before.

They stitch it all together without any narration.

I wish they would have had the audio where they were instructed to push the
range radar circuit breakers. They were told to verify them as being out prior
to leaving the moon. It was the range radar that was producing a flood of
useless data that overwhelmed the computer producing the 1201 and 1202 alarms.
They would have needed it to be turned on prior to docking with the CM.

That alarm was probably the most pucker factor moment in human history.

Doing a Google search, I see “launches exclusively in IMAX, March 1, for one
week only”.

WTF?

Does this mean it’s still showing in theaters but not in IMAX? I think we only
have one IMAX theater left near us (I think the others were converted for 3D or
something), but that one has showtimes for Apollo 11 this weekend. Should I
assume not in IMAX though?
