Yesterday I saw you apologize for not bottom posting, and then I deleted that post before I realized that I wanted to complain :P I think the true spirit of us old-timers' admonition to bottom post is not just about bottom posting, but about wanting the old style of email where people actually edit away unnecessary cruft from messages they reply to, keeping just enough context to make their own part look like intertwined responses to particular points, and saving the readers from having to page through all the rest. In the past, if we had a win type that was "accumulate N units by doing a range of Agoran things", the Herald categorizes it as a high score win (the original win condition). So Alexis decided that coins qualified. I'll go back and check before the next Scroll, but I think this was deliberate - I think something messed up awarding this in 2014, so the title was awarded with the standard consent method, choosing 2014/13 as a joke because it took until 2015. But even if accidental, the ratification shouldn't be a problem. It would ratify the fact that there was a patent title called "Silver Quill 2014/13" without caring where the title came from or what the numbers meant. -G.

Re: DIS: Re: OFF: [Herald] The Scroll of Agora
Random follow-up historical fun fact - before Switches were implemented, tracking stuff like this was done with "Unique" patent titles. If the rules defined a patent title as Unique, then the act of awarding it to one person auto-revoked it from any previous holder. So non-office roles (like Shogun etc.) followed this model. These days, if we don't just say "the person fulfilling unique condition X is the Shogun" we'd do it as "Shogun is a switch with the Players as possible values." When we repealed the concept, we didn't repeal each patent title, and patent titles need to be explicitly revoked - so that's where most of the Ephemera in the current Scroll come from, frozen at their last unique value. -G. On 7/31/2019 4:37 PM, Kerim Aydin wrote: Already covered by ancient precedent! https://faculty.washington.edu/kerim/nomic/cases/?1298 Summary: "Distributor" used to be tracked as a Patent Title given to the person doing the job (wasn't an Office). The old Patent Title was never revoked, so for a while Steve was the holder of the Patent Title "Distributor" while Taral and then omd were doing the actual job. (Still later, we used the 2 Agoran Consent method to award that Patent Title to Taral and omd as well, so the patent title now means "was a distributor at some point"). -G. Already covered by ancient precedent! https://faculty.washington.edu/kerim/nomic/cases/?1298 Summary: "Distributor" used to be tracked as a Patent Title given to the person doing the job (wasn't an Office). The tracking mechanism for who was the Distributor changed to a non-patent title method. -G. I think last time that happened, we had a debate in a-d as to if people should be taken off the list when they reregistered. (I think we went on a case-by-case basis, but every case was removed.) There's at least one case of a user actually deliberately trying to make amends, but I can't remember who it was offhand (perhaps Sir Toby?). Not sure what you mean by every case was removed? Maybe the Herald should make a practice of saying Welcome back! You left under a cloud but we can't remember why. If you say you're really, really sorry I'll take you off the list. Of course, if there's some reasonably recent annoyance as to the reason that would require something more depending on circumstances. Maybe I should do it w/o 2 objections or so? Mind you, it looks like Quazie's destined to end up back on that list in the near future. -G.

Samurai, Shogun, and Honorless Worm are Kudos-related titles. Kudos were a zero-sum measure of Players' honor and respect for each other. Once per week, a player could increase someone's kudos (other than eir own) at the expense of someone else's (perhaps eir own), if e gave a reason. Typical uses: I increase Murphy's kudos by one by decreasing mine by one, to thank em for helping me with my report or (to encourage good behavior and discourage bad) I increase Eris's kudos by one (for making a good judgement) by decreasing Goethe's kudos by one (for being such a jerk while arguing against said good judgement). In reality, there was some kudo inflation as players tended to decrease kudos of vanished inactive players prior to de- registration, so as to award without punishing. Players with kudos above a certain high threshold were Samurai. The Shogun was e with the most kudos at any given time, the Honorless Worm the least; titles below reflect the instant kudos were repealed ca. 2002. Some insight may be gained by the fact that the last holder of Honorless Worm was the only person to have Left in a Huff thrice. Hooray! I hope this becomes a regular feature of the Herald's report (on a new subject each report of course). BobTHJ
