Hi all, I may be slowly working my way up to reading Agora mail again...
or not.

Yesterday I saw you apologize for not bottom posting, and then I deleted
that post before I realized that I wanted to complain :P

I think the true spirit of us old-timers' admonition to bottom post is not
just about bottom posting, but about wanting the old style of email where
people actually edit away unnecessary cruft from messages they reply to,
keeping just enough context to make their own part look like intertwined
responses to particular points, and saving the readers from having to page
through all the rest.

And that apology of yours made me realize: when you absolutely won't
remove unnecessary parts from a long replied-to message, then bottom
posting is actually slightly _more_ annoying than top posting, although in
a "the greater sin has already been committed anyway" sense.

Greetings,
Ørjan, who now wonders how much of this is only because he's still using
a terminal mail reader.

That seems to be correct, so I have added it to the future reports. I've
also gone ahead and added it to ais523's 2016 one because while I don't

Thanks! I've added these for the next report; I think that the second
happened while I was preparing the report, so wasn't caught in my

Meant to add: In that discussion we also kind of agreed that if a future
herald went back and added the approximate era or other notes, to make the
rule or system "very clear", it would be a welcome addition!

No argument either way for coin wins, just to point out there was a bit of
discussion about this a couple months ago. In the past, if we had a win
type that was "accumulate N units by doing a range of Agoran things", the
Herald categorizes it as a high score win (the original win condition).
So Alexis decided that coins qualified.

It's really the most lumped of the specified win types because it covered
several past systems with different names, I think all of the others
categories are specific to the particular game/era (Tournament and
Proposal wins combine different types of proposals and tournaments over
the years, but the underlying mechanisms for those is the same at least).

In general, we have avoided that because it would be necessarily
incomplete and the system is rather imprecise. Here's a similar
response from G. last year:

I'll go back and check before the next Scroll, but I think this was
deliberate - I think something messed up awarding this in 2014, so the
title was awarded with the standard consent method, choosing 2014/13
as a joke because it took until 2015.

But even if accidental, the ratification shouldn't be a problem. It
would ratify the fact that there was a patent title called "Silver
Quill 2014/13" without caring where the title came from or what the
numbers meant.

don't know what the effects of ratifying that would be.

Re: DIS: Re: OFF: [Herald] The Scroll of Agora

2019-07-31 Thread Kerim Aydin

Random follow-up historical fun fact - before Switches were implemented,
tracking stuff like this was done with "Unique" patent titles. If the rules
defined a patent title as Unique, then the act of awarding it to one person
auto-revoked it from any previous holder. So non-office roles (like Shogun
etc.) followed this model. These days, if we don't just say "the person
fulfilling unique condition X is the Shogun" we'd do it as "Shogun is a
switch with the Players as possible values."

When we repealed the concept, we didn't repeal each patent title, and patent
titles need to be explicitly revoked - so that's where most of the Ephemera
in the current Scroll come from, frozen at their last unique value.

Sure. PSS as Herald awarded it and didn't officially list a reason in

This description only says who it was awarded to. I'd suggest

I don't think I got a patent title along with the win. Basically what
happened is that I saw the scam coming, and asked for a win in return
for not stopping it. E'd have given me a patent title only if e
actively needed my help, rather than merely non-interference.

Yeah, there were four thread-beginnings missing, but I didn't check whether
the rest of the thread was there or write down which ones, both of which I
probably should have done.

Thanks! I thought you were going back through so it seemed odd that Champion
got
missed. I could have sworn Alexis gave ais523 a "special" along with the win.

But maybe that's a complete mis-memory, so I'll defer to ais523 if anything

is missing...?

I guess we have some archive inconsistencies then?

I read through every Official and Business message since October that was
in the Mailman archive, but somethings were missing. I will add in the
Champion because I found that on the Mail Archive and if you could be more

I think last time that happened, we had a debate in a-d as to if people
should be taken off the list when they reregistered. (I think we went on
a case-by-case basis, but every case was removed.) There's at least one
case of a user actually deliberately trying to make amends, but I can't
remember who it was offhand (perhaps Sir Toby?).

Not sure what you mean by every case was removed?

Maybe the Herald should make a practice of saying Welcome back! You left
under a cloud but we can't remember why. If you say you're really, really
sorry I'll take you off the list.

Of course, if there's some reasonably recent annoyance as to the reason
that would require something more depending on circumstances. Maybe I
should do it w/o 2 objections or so?

Mind you, it looks like Quazie's destined to end up back on that list in
the near future.

I mean, everyone on the list who reregistered, we removed after
consideration of their individual cases. (Actually, I wonder now if I
just did that unilaterally; I seem to remember I was Herald, or
deputising for it, at the time, but it was a long time ago now and I
can't remember the details.)

Makes sense.  If Quazie reactivates emself I'll ask for short apology;
if not e'll eventually leave with a late report to eir credit so stays
on.

As an understood acronym for pointing out errors. What would be silly
would be doing that in response to another message pointing out the
error, as ais523 did here.

   the not-quite-birthday HERALD'S REPORT - June 30, 2008

  HERALD'S HISTORY CORNER (*NEW!*)

  DID YOU KNOW?
Samurai, Shogun, and Honorless Worm are Kudos-related titles.

Kudos were a zero-sum measure of Players' honor and respect for each
other. Once per week, a player could increase someone's kudos (other
than eir own) at the expense of someone else's (perhaps eir own), if
e gave a reason. Typical uses: I increase Murphy's kudos by one by
decreasing mine by one, to thank em for helping me with my report or
(to encourage good behavior and discourage bad) I increase Eris's
kudos by one (for making a good judgement) by decreasing Goethe's
kudos by one (for being such a jerk while arguing against said good
judgement). In reality, there was some kudo inflation as players
tended to decrease kudos of vanished inactive players prior to de-
registration, so as to award without punishing.

Players with kudos above a certain high threshold were Samurai. The
Shogun was e with the most kudos at any given time, the Honorless Worm
the least; titles below reflect the instant kudos were repealed ca.
2002. Some insight may be gained by the fact that the last holder of
Honorless Worm was the only person to have Left in a Huff thrice.

Hooray! I hope this becomes a regular feature of the Herald's report
(on a new subject each report of course).

Also, didn't I get a Left in a Huff, or Came Back in a Puff (or
something similar) title by proposal some time back for my 'scam' of
using a WRIT of FAGE to circumvent the 30 day self-imposed exile for
voluntary deregistration?

Hmm... patent titles aren't assets AFAIR, so the Herald probably isn't
the recordkeepor of them and so it probably doesn't self-ratify. But
CoEing is still useful due to the potential of deliberate ratification,
plus I think it's a good habit to get into rather then remembering what
ratifies and what doesn't.

CoEing does not prevent deliberate ratification. Objecting does.
