I have much trouble in trying to make my sound card (Intel8x0) work.
After having installed alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-tools, when I add

I installed a 2.4.21 benH kernel on it and got the Alsa sources 0.9.4-1 and
compiled them fine but when I try to load the modules I can see i2c loading and
then my ibook hangs up suddenly!

alsamixer, but... about five minutes after I'd posted the question
I ran aumix, just out of curiosity, and found that it had all sound
levels at zero, apparently overriding(?) the alsamixer settings.

Please don't install ALSA 0.4, it is not supported anymore, and you
should use ALSA 0.9.
