But when we click on preview, the text is empty.

Thanks a lot, I would not have thought about enabling the game port
for other readers: the option to enable the game port appeared to be
under input devices.

I've this chip in a shuttle SB51G, it's true that's the spdif output is
supported (with Alsa 0.9.6 at least), but the sound is quite awful,
there are lot's of noises, no deep in basses etc etc
I have an old SB Live which has a spdif output, and it works just fine,
though it takes a pci port
M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 and M-Audio Delta 1010LT both worked with
spdif. That is, I tested that 1010LT sent it's analog input(s) to spdif
and 2496 received them. Sound was as clear as the original analog input.
Also captured from spdif (after little modifications to asoundrc)

I downloaded the latest drivers (0.9.7) and installed it as follows:
./configure --with-cards=intel8x0 --with-sequencer= yes
--with=kernel=/home/kernel/linux-2.6.0-test6
The configuration ran fine and then I did make;make install
