I had to update one of the roms, when I tried to upgrade my Apple2 from MESS to MAME. I Think it was the disk controller. Besides that you need to tell mame that one of the cards in the slot is the Echo2 speech synth and then I think that's all. It worked fine afterword.

So, when you encounter a Pokemon, you hear it's cry. Sometimes the cry plays a few times during the encounter when the pokemon is dodging. The easiest way to tell if you are in an encounter screen is to turn VO off and tap the middle of the screen.
