Thunderbird is indeed a very good mail client. Beside the address book, you can also find the e-mail you want by drop-down list which helps in some circumstances

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

eYes, the user favourites folder. I know you can open them in firefox, but if I can't store stuff in there and manage them as I have with ie, I don't know if firefox will work for me, since to me the favourites folder is as important a resource as documents etc, and firefox internal bookmark management just wasn't good enough last time I checked, hell, I know how I'd even backup the bookmarks as I do favourites. If firefox would either work directly with favourites and let me add stuff to it, or give me an iquivolent folder I could work from in explorer that would be okay, indeed I'm rather confused as to why it doesn't, after all, whichever document editing program you use you can save stuff in the documents folder.Edit: okay, just googled firefox and favourites and sure enough, there is no way to get to the bookmarks folder in explorer because firefox stores them all internally to the program, and firefox own bookmark management seems
ridiculously complex with drag and rop and library functions and all sorts of pratting around, far more trouble than just managing files in file explorer. Again, if anyone knows a way to either manage the bookmarks in explorer or better still have firefox just add pages to favourites, I'd be interested to know.As to thunderbird, yes I was thinking of an address book. I do think I'll miss the easy dropdown contacts list in outlook express, which made life far simpler and dint' mean I was constantly relying on auto complete to guess who I was thinking of when sending a mail, I do suspect thunderbird has a much better way of managing email contacts than either Microsoft outlook or the default windows contact manager.

Hi, If I'm not mistakened, are you talking about the favourites folder found inside the user's folder? You can open those internet shortcuts if Firefox is your default browser. However, adding new shortcuts to the favourites folder I don't know how to do it.Mozilla Thunderbird does have an address book, though I don't know weather it is used to manage contacts or save email addresses for later use. Anyway, I can say it is a truly good e-mail program.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

What irritates me about the new start menu is that it's utterly impossible to edit. For example, I like to have all my audiogames in a folder called well audiogames, and then subfolders for each developer. Yes, I could use desktop shortcuts, but being as most programs install a program group in the start menu with stuff like read manual, go to website etc, its' frankly stupid to not have access to those things, or worse, be able to create similar shortcuts for say something like crazy party with all my other games. I don't really mind the change of direction with the start menu, since alphabetising things isn't such a bad idea, but why the hell! do we have no control over what goes where? either way never mind, I have it now as I'm used to, complete using the desktop  for shortcuts to stuff I actually want shortcut keys for such as vlc media player and the mail program. speaking of mail and mosilla and such. I do
mean to try thunderbird, since the iwndows mail program is only a stop gap measure, in particular I'd like something with a semi decent contacts manager the way outlook express had, since right now sending an email to anyone I don't remember the address of is a pest, and the windows contact manager is very clunky, even with narrator. With Firefox, on the one hand the occasional nvda slowdown in ie and the tendency of nvda to get caught up in the search bar is a miner pest, on the other hand when I last tried firefox I really didn't like the bookmarks system.I have probably 15 years worth of favourites again insubfolders upon subfolders for everything from audiogames, to game soundtracks, to tv nostalgic things, online classic books softare and various other subjects. while I know firefox can import favourites into it's bookmarks, I then found the process of actually managing the bookmarks menu to be really irritating, eg, trying to put things
in subfolders or rename things or access specific ones, especially the rather odd way it displays subfolder contents in the main menu rather than in a submenu. If Firefox bookmarks was just  a standard windows folder list that I could cut and paste and move around as I do the favourites menu, or if firefox would use  the favourites folder anyway, I'd have no hesitation in trying it out and possibly switching, actually since the favourites are just urls stored on the system I really don't see why firefox has to use it's own internal data storage systeminstead, especially one which doesn't seem possible to access through windows explorer. If I've got this wrong, feel free to correct me, since as I said I have nothing against firefox and I do find the mild slowdown and nvda's rather odd habbit of getting stuck in the ie toolbars a bit whacky.Just to put this in perspective, at the moment I get to this forum by finding the favou
rites folder (I've created a start menu link), hitting "A" for my audiogames subfolder, then hitting 2 which is the forum (1 being the main front page).

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

I'm really glad you took the time to install the Classic shell! It is a good way to escape yourself from the social terror of the idiocy of Windows 10's innovation. Just so terribly complicated that it completely changed the view of Windows that we have been seeing for years from Windows XP to Windows 7. For example, in the anniversary update of Win 10, the start menu experienced another change that resulted to be more accessible for us, but once more more complicated. They didn't let the power options like shut down, restart, sleep where they used to be previously, but they added another option, called "power options". I found it difficult to find at first, and imagine what would happen if I went out with a friend and asked my father to turn it off. Even my brother couldn't find it on the first attempt so I decided finally to stick with Classic Shell which is way simpler than the native start menu/start screen of Windows 10.My next gole is to e
ncourage you to try Mozilla Thunderbird, one of the best mail clients you can find nowadays. It is very accessible with any screen reader, including Narrator. Plus, it has all the options you need in daily basis work. After familiarising yourself with Mozilla Thunderbird, the next step would be to try the other product of Mozilla, called Firefox. It works solidly with NVDA or Supernova. If you're not satisfied with Firefox, you may consider Google Chrome, which is not by any means a bad web browser

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Well, I finally decided to just say "bugger it" and installed classic shell, meaning I can have the same program groups in the start menu as I used to. think in fairness I could've got used to the actual start menu in windows 10 if it were just possible to move things around on the bloody thing! not to mention get easier access to stuff inside sub folders. So I'm now with my familiar setup, programs in subfolders within subfolders on the start menu, desktop just used for program shortcuts to stuff I want keys for (I was even able to create a desktop shortcut for the windows mail program, though it behaves very oddly when I try adding a shortcut key). I even  start menu shortcuts to favourites and downloads.Crazy! stuff, though again why Microsoft didn't just dam well give us the start menu or at let us edit the dam thing rather than expecting people to literally build their desktop from the ground up I don't know.S
till at least it is now working and I can start installing fun stuff, I've already got vipmud installed and running which is good.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

For sticking stuff to your desktop, I usually do this:1. Press the start menu key.2. I typed "Notepad" into the search box. (Without the quotes.)3. When notepad icon appears in the search results, I press applications key, and arrowing to "Open file location", and hit enter. After that, windows accessories folder will open up, you will find a shortcut of the notepad icon in that folder. Press applications key again, this time, arrow to send to sub menu, and expand the menu, select Desktop (create shortcuts), and hit enter. and, bingo! Next time when you press windows plus m, or whatever keys you press to go to your desktop, you should see a notepad icon on your desktop.Hth

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

@Nidza, I do think the voice is specific to region, since I haven't seen mark. The fact that the mobile voices show up as a separate synth in Nvda suggests to me  they probably are a different engine to sapi. Then again, I don't have any 64 bit sapi programs to test them on besides narrator itself. To be honest though it's not a major deal since I have decided for the time being to use orphius human sounding voice Alan with nvda, as while George sounds pretty good, the reaction speed is a little slow.I'll probably have to find something else eventually, especially if I am switching from Supernova later and so don't have access to the sam engine, but I'll be okay for now. Btw, to get back to windows 10I do have a couple more questions. firstly, is there a way to copy folders from the start menu to the desktop? It'sirritating to install something and then only have the basic "play" icons on the
desktop so that if I want to read the manual or go to the website or whatever I have to go trauling the program files folder for the actual files to create desktop shortcuts. I've tried the applications key, but other than "pin to task bar" there doesn't seem to be an option. I also would like to stick a wordpad icon on my desktop, as it's something I use regularly, ditto with mail, although it's possible I'll be switching to another program since while the default mail is okay I'd prefer a less irritating contacts and replies management system, ditto with a separate folder for copies of sent items and draughts, (I'll probably try out some programs and see which I like best and cooperates best with nvda).Either way, for now if there is a way to find shortcuts of stuff in the start menu that would help a lot. I'm still not decided about which version of office to get, whether the stand alone or the 3
65 version. On the one hand, 365 is cheaper in the short term, on the other, it's probably more expensive long term since it is likely I will have this pc for at least another four or five years (possibly even more). I don't particularly need the cloud storage as I prefer manual backups anyway, and besides, at most I'll get a laptop at some point to have a travelling machine so all the vaunted "portability" won't affect me too much, and from what I understood about the licensing if you want 365 on multiple machines you need the 5 computers version which is more expensive anyway. On the other hand, I do wonder about updates to office especially with narrator and whether if I buy the standalone home and student version if I'll miss out on future upgrades. this wouldn't usually be a concern with office, but I do like what is done with narrator so far, and with office being microsoft's flagship project, it is likely
access upgrades will be included there first.Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

You could also try Libre Office, which is free, and allows you to open Microsoft Word files. I know that parts of it aren't fully accessible yet, particularly the calc program, which is, contrary to what it sounds like, a spreadsheet application like Excel. Writer, which is the equivalent of Word, is mostly accessible from what I understand, but if you need to do lots of formatting and such for your thesis, someone more knowledgable than me will have to explain whether that can be done as easily as it can with Office. Since I personally don't need lots of complex features, and have grown to despise both the ribbon interface and the bloated nature of Office in recent years, I was content to switch to this free option. But it might not work for you. I have one friend who says that using open source software is usually fine, except when it comes to an office suite. His logic seems to be that it can't possibly be as powerful or fully featured because it's not as we
ll known in business settings. I don't know if I agree with that, but, as I said, I don't know enough about it to form an educated opinion one way or the other.

Sorry, I apparently wasn't clear that the subscription fee is yearly, so that's £48 yearly. And yes Amazon is offering you a code, in partnership with Microsoft, so it's a legitimate purchase as long as it's being sold by Microsoft on Amazon's marketplace. Of course, nothing says you can't renew through MS directly, if you prefer. In any event, once you register the code to your Microsoft account, you will get your 1 TB of storage and will be able to install and run the Office apps on your devices (one each of phone, tablet and computer).

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Hmmm, I've not bought software from amazon, or is office still only installing on disk? I know office isn't free, but when I checked In the  windows store office  was listed as free. I assume this is because you get a free trial and then after a week or so something will pop up along the lines of "toon using office send us your soul, or first born son, or bladder" or just lots of money .I actually thought buying directly from Microsoft theoretically be cheaper as well, though again I could be wrong. as far as the subscription goes, my only issue with that is whether office itself will stop working if subscription runs out, since while I may or may not use cloud backup service, I certainly will be using office for the conceivable future, though again, whether the subscription also gives you use of office on other mac
hines is a concern as well since it's conceivable I'll buy a windows 10 laptop or tablet at some point.

Office isn't free.Buying standalone is more expensive. This is, of course, by design ... on Amazon, Home and Student is £107, whereas 365 personal is just £48. Maybe, even if you don't use OneDrive (a whole terabyte of storage, which is the only reason I bought it, with Office as a mere convenient side-effect) you might like to consider the subscription. In any event, go to Amazon to buy. It's cheaper.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

@Turtlepower, yep, using narrator does indeed reset the voice to ms Hazel, it's quite crazy really. @Socheat, that sounds like a pretty cool addon, and I might give it a try, since while the voice I have at the moment is pretty good, I've always liked having a screen reader and sapias different, just so that I'm not listening to the same thing all the time.Lastly, I have an ms office question. I do need a copy of office, or at least of Microsoft word to finish my thesis, plus I might even try outlook :D. But I'm not sure on obtaining one, since I don't really need microsoft's hole 365 program with access to all files (I still like my bbackup drives). Can I buy just straight out office  somewhere? I checked the Microsoft store, and the first thing that came up was "office free" which I assume is the right thing, though I'd prefer some confirmation here just to check.

Hi Turtlepower. It actually turns out that the problem was to do with narrator, since whenever I run narrator, it resets the Sapi voice. Hopefully though now I've switched to Nvda, I won't have to run ssapi as often so won't run into the issue, indeed I'm using Sapi with Nvda right now, since I have a decent voice for it.

Hi turtlepower, good to know. Vlc actually seems pretty good for just general media playback without covering the interface  in rubbish which is helpful.I'm having two weerd things though. The first, is for some reason if I by mistake set supernova to sapi, it resets the sapi voice to Microsoft hazel. This isn't really a problem, I have either vocalizer  or orphius on supernova and don't use supernova with sapi anyway, but it is a little bit strange none the less.I also tried installing troopanum 2 and despite having both the winkit games and having run aprone's  checkup, got the error about a file instruction not playing through. I'll have to  investigate that one, thoughthe bsc games aren't a priority at the moment, not when I have stuff like thethe gait  and crazy partyto keep me busy, not to mention rhythm rage etc, though it might be something to investigate in the future.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

VLC does indeed have many more keyboard shortcuts than you were probably aware of. check out this link.https://shortcutworld.com/en/VLC-Media-Player/win/allI recently switched to using VLC myself, after many years of using Winamp, and I'm extremely happy with my choice. The one thing that can be a bit screwy is setting up the equalizer to get it the way you like it, but it is doable. The preferences dialog is also kind of a pain, because it reads HTML elements for some reason each time you tab through the options. But there again, once you have it set up and working the way you want, you shouldn't need to do too much messing around, unless you need to do things like constantly switch playback devices.

The only keyboard shortcuts I know for vlc are p to play, s to stop and spacebar to pause, and I found those by accident. There isn't a list in the menu, indeed this is why I've only ever used it for dvds, since I do like the ability to go to next  title and chapter and such, but have never used it for media playback, since if I can't say wind forward and back through a track or get to the next track in a folder when I play the hole folder, it's  not going to be too helpful. Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Well I've not experienced anything too sluggish in the start menu so far, though finding actual folders and stuff I want is a different matter, indeed at the moment I'm sticking lots of nested shortcuts on the desktop, and only really using Cortana in the start menu to access things like program manuals. It's not ideal but I can live with it.With media player it's a bit more specific, since what I'm essentially looking  for is something that won't give me a massively cluttered interface, won't have a grabby system of "add to library" or playlist when I just want to play some files or folders from windows explorer, and is able to play whacky formats without  too much trouble. I don't like what you say about Foobar not having decent shortcut keys, indeed that was one thing I noticed in vlc, that  it didn't come with much by way of default keyboard shortcuts and the manager to set them up seemed a
  bit screwy.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Hello, Well my first suggestion would be to replace the native windows 10 start menu with classic shell as it is the equivalent of windows 7's start menu, fairly simple, and it is not sluggish like the start menu in windows 10. What's more, start menu in win 10 is very complicated for a beginner as most of us are used to a traditional start menu where you access items by pressing up/down and left/right arrows, whereas in windows 10 you should in addition press tab to move to another category. The other suggestion is to change from Winamp to any other media player, including windows media player, VLC, foobar 2000, or media player classic. All these that I'm mentioning here are very accessible with the most popular screen readers, including Narrator. I started using Foobar 2000, but the reason I stopped using it is because it doesn't have based shortcuts for playback control. I created all the shortcuts I needed for that purpose, but some of them inter
fered with JAWS, so I went with Windows media player. Some of you might laugh at my choice, but I find it a quite good media player. It opens up quite fast and has a lot of options.

@Dark Yes, you can use Microsoft George with 32 bit apps, though it requires a few registry edits. First, go in to the 32 bit registry by accessing the run dialog and typing "c:\windows\syswow64\regedit.exe" without the quotes yes, the 32 and 64 bit registries are different. Then, import this registry file in to the 32 bit registry to get George working.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

It's possible to customize the all apps list as well. If you wanted to group programs into folders like games for all your games, media for all your media players, etc, you can add shortcuts and folders to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" which ads it to all users on the system. As I've said, you can also install Classic Shell and get rid of all that garbage. You'll get a nice start menu with easy first letter navigation. You can pin icons to the menu or look through the programs submenu. It also conveniently separates the modern apps from legacy/standard Windows apps. Using the above folder should let you customize that program list. Now that I think about it, I'm finding plenty of ways to make newer versions of Windows function similarly enough to XP. I'm definitely going for the Creator update coming in March or April.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

@Chris, thanks again, the sapi thing has worked fine and I've now got my voice back, hurrah!@turtlepower, I wouldn't want the manuals on the desktop either, but if this stupid convention of windows continues with annoying start menus, maybe developers should start doing that more often to save people having to traul the program folders themselves. I have had experience of the desktop on windows 7, since I setup my lady's machine to use it, but again it just seems a rather clunky way around as compared to say the way on Xp I could just install say vipmud, then have a gma games\vipmud folder with all the right shortcuts in it, and the desktop icon just as a quick way of running the program itself. @Zersiax, Yes I've got the run dialgoue working and have used it for finding windows components like wordpad that aren't particularly obvious, but I'll confess it's not my favourite way of accessing things, especially  games since
I tend to be a demon for subfolders, heck, even on Ios I try to keep one page per set of things and use folders per developer, though I do wish Ios supported multilple nested folders for it's aps, though that's another debate.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Well, you could technically create a shortcut to a manual or whatever you want on the desktop using the same method I outlined above. Most installers do give you the oppurtunity to create a desktop shortcut for the program itself, but not the readme, in fact the Spoonbill games are the only ones I've ever seen that automatically dump their manuals on your desktop. I personally find this disconcerting, and delete them as soon as possible, but I can see how it would be convenient.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

The 32-bit SAPI thing is, like was mentioned above, similar in windows 7 and windows 10. What might be tripping you up there Dark is that in Windows XP, you really only had 32-bit stuff and 64-bit stuff wasn't really a thing. The 32-bit SAPI 5 voices are a bit tricky to reach because its legacy tech, but its definitely possible if you follow the instructions in post 4. Not sure if you are aware how to get to the run dialogue, you do this by pressing windows+r The desktop , again similar to Windows 7, pretty much starts you off with an empty slate. You can put icons on it by using the method discussed in post 6, or by installing programs that have a 'create a desktop icon' option. In the case of crazy party, which doesn't have an installer, you could put this wherever you like and make a shortcut in the method discussed in post 6.As for not being ab
le to find stuff in the start menu quickly, what you can try is the search functionality. I honestly barely ever bother with the start screen itself, thing is that I'm not sure if Supernova supports this, give it a try. To use:- Press your windows key.- Type the name of a game, say, manamon- Results should come up. use up and down to select between them, enter to select.Hope that helps

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

That path which was posted which takes you to the 32 bit Sappi control panel does indeed work in Windows 10. I just used it myself a few days ago to switch my default voice to Eloquence. As for creating icons on your desktop so that you can access games and such, that's definitely possible. Extract the folder of the game, such as Crazy Party, wherever you like. It really doesn't matter where you put the folder, as long as you don't move it once your shortcut has been created. Once the files have been extracted, highlight the executable file for the game, then hit your applications key, or shift f10 if you're on a laptop or otherwise weird keyboard that doesn't contain an applications key. Scroll through the menu until you see the send to submenu, then open that and go ddown to desktop (create shortcut.) Hit enter on that, and you've got a perfectly functioning shortcut, just like in previous versions of Windows. I think what might be tripping yo
u up there is that you were unsure how to access the send to menu using the ribbon, which, in my opinion, is the stupidest invention Microsoft has come up with. I have it disabled, but luckily, many essential functions are available right from your context menu, so you shouldn't need to mess with the ribbon much. Of course, there are also many ways to add things to the context menu to make it more useful, and the ribbon can be disabled too, but that's way beyond the scope of your question, so I'll stop there.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Hi Turtlepower. I just found the desktop icon thing by accident, since it seems the desktop in windows 10  has to be a make your own start menu, I do see that one as useful, though I wonder what happens when you get programs like vipmud  with actual installers? particularly when you want to say go and read the manuals or check out eh website.I'll try sapi and see how it works, though I have had some success with bits of the start menu, namely the quick access bit which you can get to with shift tab, and searching aps by letter, although I've just had to create a direct shortcut on my desktop to my favourites, since it seems there's no way in hell of gettingit onto the start menu.If I can install a good sapi voice, then I  can get on with muds and fun games and actually maybe see some good in this thing (It was would be nice to play manamon without having to pester my wife).

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Hi Chris. Well as far as the 32 bit control panel goes, I could only find one sapi control panel, the one you g get with windows x x, and even when I'd installed a 32 bit sapi voice it didn't show up in the selection there, just the default ones. As to the start menu, the pinning thing might work, accept the only way it seems to access the pinned items from what I can gather is when you set the start menu to full screen which stops you getting access to anything else anyway. Again I'll  talk to  dolphin about this.Edit: Okay I'm a fool! It seems you can get to two useful areas of the menu by just hitting tab, namely the pin   group, and the navigation menu. Which if either will be more useful for games and shortcuts to  stuff I don't know, but it  does seem the menu will behave with supernova and be customized. Now just to solve the sapi problem so I can have some decent sounding g
 ames to play .

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

You may be able to pin items to the start list by opening the context menu and choosing pin to start. Still, I'd recommend using Classic Shell. I don't like how the menu is arranged as a hybrid start menu/start screen. Are you serious about 32 bit SAPI voices not working? Does it give you an error and fail to install? If you can't select the voice as your default voice, you need to access the 32 bit speech control panel. In the run dialogue, type "c:\windows\syswow64\speech\speechux\sapi.cpl" without the quotes. This should launch the speech settings where you can select the default voice. If I didn't get that syntax exactly correct, you can navigate to that folder using File Explorer and launch the sapi.cpl file manually. You may have to reboot after saving your changes. I know this works in Windows 7. If Microsoft completely did away with that supportin 64 bit versions of 10, that is truly sad.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

Hi Chris. Thanks for t letting me know. I love the stupidity of a "start" menu that doesn't let you put the things you want to  "start" on it, really clever!  Since I however will definitely have more than 10 games, I don't thin think the pinning will help much, so it's going to be lots of nested folders of shortcuts created by me, so much for usability. I also however have one other question. How exactly do I install 32 bit sapi voices on this thing? If I can't have the mobile voices, I might as well have the ones I'm familiar with, but when I tried an install it  didn't work.

Re: A couple of windows 10 questions

You can put self-contained games into places such as your documents folder and create a desktop icon. You could also pin the .exe file to the task bar and launch it with Windows 1 through 0. This means you can alunch up to 10 applications using hot keys. You could also install Classic Shell and pin programs to the classic start menu. I never liked the start screen or the supposedly new and improved start menu in Windows 10.As for using SAPI mobile voices, I believe you can tweak the registry to enable them to be used with the main SAPI engine. I'm not sure what those are at the moment. Someone more knowledgeable than me will have to help you.I hope this information helps. I haven't really been a Windows user since I switched to a Mac in 2013. However, Microsoft is peaking my interest with their new commitment to accessibility.

A couple of windows 10 questions

A couple of windows 10 questions

ThereHi. Well  the machine is working, and supernova is doing fine with things thus far, accept one thing which I'llabout on Monday since I might be missing something here. However the windows services, settings and random stuff like weather is actually working well. I've  decided to install some games and have run into two major things thus far. First, where do I put said games? Installing is okay, but I'm short on where to put icons, particularly for things like Crazy party that don't have full installations. I suppose I can  cover the desktop with folders, but it's going to get fairly full. The second question is about sapi. Narrator has a really nice voice, George. When I finally found the sapi control options (and they were rather well hidden), it seems that the mobile voices, of which George is one can't be used as standard tts, or doI have this wrong? if not that is fine, I
do have other things I can install, but I did rather like George as far as things went, and since I now want to relax and play some games, a good sapi voice might be very helpful.

I've tried looking in the control panel with windows key x, and I've tried in settings itself, no luck, though narrator has some interesting voices I'd like to have a play with, indeed I might use vocalizer and
Daniel for supernova and one of the ms ones if I can find the settings. Any  avice on this one would be appreciated.
