Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

I can confirm that the arrow keys dont work under Jaws, thats probably why hes going to add letter key equivalents, since PureBasic probably has no equivalent to the BGT Install_Keyhook() function, since PureBasic is a general purpose language.

The Panzer game used the actual stats of the World War 2 tanks. It allowed you to use the tanks from Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. It took place in the sands of Africa so there were no large hills or valleys to get in the way and much easier to program. It was turn based, so you could take as long as you wanted to decide what to do.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

hello.Ive downloaded the version 2 of Breakout from PCSGames website in post 36, however I found some bug in it.1. when you run the game, it asks you to select clasic or modern sound mode, however NVDA doesnt read the message, although you can use up and down keys to select modern or clasic mode, you cannt hear the message.2. when you chose each sound mode, the intro will play. however, if you press enter to skip it, the sound skips but at the same time the first game mode is slected automatically to play. so in order to skip the game intro, i press the arrow keys and then the game main menu appears.3. when i use jaws, the arrow keys doesnt work to move in the menu items, it seems that game doesnt install the key hook for jaws stuff.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

If theres anything I plan on rewriting next, its probably shooting range. My 3 most favourite games were, in no particular order, that, breakout and Panzers in north africa which is the one I logged the most time in I think. However, as much as Id like to write a faithfull windows conversion I dont think I could do it accurately as Im not sure how the various calculations worked in that game which is why Im still planning on working on that dos emulation project. On the programming front, Ill probably release a 3rd version of breakout that lets you use I and K in addition to the arrows in menus and maybe look into some stats. After that I want to take some time to learn bass so I can go cross platform, then possibly change breakout so it uses that and come out with a Mac version, then I can think about coding new ideas. Initially, I was planning to release it both on Windows and Mac, but even though the pure basic manual says changing the
sound frequency and panning is supported on both Windows and Mac in practice it doesnt actually work on the mac which is why Angelgift also hasnt been released on it.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

Hmm, I never played Panzers in North Africa. But wasnt that what GMA Tank Commander was based on? Are there differences between the two games, besides the obvious fact that a DOS environment wouldnt have been as complex?Same with the car racing game. I remember it vaguely. The sounds were actually not bad at all for their time. But I dont recall the exact game mechanics. Would a remake of that give us anything that Top Speed or Rail Racer hasnt already done? And oh yes, Shooting Range was absolutely brilliant. I dont know why I was obsessed with that game, but it was great. The sounds, the variety of guns, it just totally drew my 10-year-old self in. I think that was one of the first audio games I ever played.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

@Simber, breakout style games are really popular, but as far as I know there arent that many around that are accessible, which is odd sinse its a style of game that could be done easily in audio. Rebound from Gamevial is about the best example, and that does have power ups like bat stretchers, multiple balls and extra lives, and on later levels even power downs like bat shrinkers and killers that kill you if you pick them up (avoiding grabbing those, especially with a stretched bat can be quite tricky).Rebound is unfortunately the only serious example of a Breakout game in audio I can think of, sinse as I said Ken Downnys wrecking ball always seemed a bit chaotic to me. It actually seems odd there arent more, sinse the bat and ball mechanics arent really that more difficult in audio than something like Jims Pong or Philips old showdown game, you just need sounds for when your ball hits the different bricks, and possibly some sort of
scan to tell you roughly where the remaining bricks are once youve destroyed a few, though this might not be necessary (rebound gets on fine without it). There is also Yukios Laser breakout, but that is more a strange turn based battle version, and other than breaking bricks doesnt really have much to do with the original game at all, though it is fun if you like turn based battles.@Phil, I can imagine a similar space invaders game to breakout with those mechanics. Im not saying the game isnt bad, as I said I enjoyed playing it, especially the fast reactions and I can definitely see the point of one switch gameplay, I just personally am not convinced it accurately reflects the original breakout concept sinse a key part of that is the bat and ball mechanics. Imagine if someone created a Packman audiogame, where instead of running around the mazes the player had to continually hit the space bar to move along in one direction, hit up arr
ow to grab dots when they heard the sound and then stop when they heard a ghost sound. The game may or may not be a good game, may have eating dots and getting killed by ghosts, but missing the need to navigate the maze sort of misses a major element of what made Packman Packman. Pcs Breakout would be an option, but Id still personally prefer it had a name that only slightly related to breakout as I said.I do admit though, I am possibly more of a stickler for this sinse I do have quite fond memories of the original breakout game from the 80s, so to me breakout without the bouncing ball sort of misses the point, likely people who are less serious about accuracy wouldnt have this niggle.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

@Pitermach, sounds nice, both the talking dos emulator and the convertions. As well as Phils games, there are a number of other great dos titles kicking around, games like fallthru and drone, not to mention some more modern, console window efforts like world of legends and eamon deluxe, though my only concern is, if the system is using a dos screen reader voice, how does it sound? I know a lot of those old dos voices were pretty robotic by modern standards and that would be a shame for such a richly described game as fallthru. Getting back to breakout any thoughts on both your company/developer name, or on perhaps changing the breakout game as I said, plus how about stats?@Phil, I did get how the sounds work, but I found that I wasnt always absolutely certain when I missed or which column I hit, which is why some tracking stats would be nice, to get an idea of how I was performing and thus improve my playing style. As to the game, one sw
itch control is no bad thing it is true, my one issue is that as I said sinse the bat and ball were so integral to the original breakout, remove them and you have a different game which is why I wondered if it needs a name change. Also, I have to beg to differ on the not possible in audio for the bat and bouncing ball, although Gamevials Rebound is the only really successful example I know (ken downys wrecking ball had possibilities but was a little too chaotic with its huge number of keyboard keys and complex bat control).

I also try to find the original sounds such as the Breakout theme song which is a 16 second edited version of the Seinfeld TV show theme. In the game we played bo1000.wav that had a voice over saying the game credits, and bot.wav at the end with out the voice-over. I think because of the difference in game play we calle it PCS Breakout rather than just Breakout but most people were happy to play the game even with the different game mechanics.Later on we developed pcs space invaders which required you to move left and right and shoot the moving invaders, an action just like the one in the original Breakout.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

To be honest guys now pcs games are being converted.piter that game rocked by the way, I do want the shooting range it was about the only game I had managed to play to some extent in my dos system when in transition mode.Gees, You know something guys, when tom ward first put out that we should have games converted, I thought especially since I was a dos pureist, I dont really care for this.Piter, as for dos, why freedos exactly? My reason is this.I do have somewhere images of dos 6.22 hanging round, you can emulate a 386 sx unit with 4mb ram maybe 8 or 12 or whatever with mono or basic colour graphics and Id be happy but I have no idea how to make these into well image files they are on source disks.I do have a torrent of old operating systems, from demonoid, however to be honest those were one off the things that went in my last hard drive crash.ms also had I think freely available to, the last dos 7.10 from windows 98 as freew
are, however, dos over 6.22 bar fat32 support had the issue that ms were already cutting out a lot of the bits and bobs in the os.I can help you with games more importantly a few extras depending on the bios you could emulate. The specs I had were 4mb ram 386sx mono screen with optional colour. My box could go to 12mb of ram if expanded I had 80mb of hard drive space, fat 16 drives can be up to 2gb of disk space before having to go to fat 32.there are a lot of sites supposed to host dos 7.1 on themhttp://www.syschat.com/download60.htmlact=downthats one of them its supposed to be virus free. There was apparently an original site for this which had the original image and os.Sadly, this has the full setup, Norton, and a whole of extra stuff, drivers, programs and utilities. Now, after searching the Linux and other places I have found for old games an internet a
rchive page of all of them.and I have also found the old much loved especially in my university days disk imager rawwrite. So if you want any of my disks that are not in the huge game list of stuff I put up on the audyssey list, in which I have quemm and other things, I will give you.I can give you my collection of disks.Though thinking of that now, I can probably give you my collection of disks that are including the bootable images of some of the dos and other things as soon as I can dig up my floppy drive that is.

@crashmasterFreedos is, well, free and similar enough to real dos that we wont be running into compatibility issues. It also has the advantage of being open-source, so if I ever decide to make a premade mess configuration that has dos, a configured screen reader (probably JAWS because, again, its free and it also supports the soundblaster TTS in case the dectalk idea fails), plus a couple of games, theres going to be a smaller chance of running into trouble. On the other hand somehow I doubt microsoft is going to care either way and I can get just about every version of dos, including 6.22 from archive.org under the mess software collection.

The turn is successfully navigated by listening for threequick high tones, and turning by hitting the appropriate arrow keyor l or r key.A safe turn is navigated when you hit the arrow key or l or r keyon tone two, three, or four after the three high tones. We suggestthat you experiment on a qualifying race at a slow speed becausethe time to hit the arrow key or letter key to turn depends on thespeed you are going. If you hit thearrow key or letter key one tone after the third high tone you willbe on the track shoulder early in the turn. If you hit the arrowkey or letter key at the fifth tone after the third high tone, youwill be on the shoulderlate in the turn. If you are on the shoulder you will have a speedloss and hear a bump sound. If you miss the safe or shoulder zonesyou will crash. DASH BOARD GAGES:You can use the functio
n keys or number keys as your dash board. F1 or 1 key will display the help screen. Note, this will pause the action of the game.Hitting any key will resume it. F2 or 2 key will allow you to change the sound settings. F4 or 4 key tells you what lap youre on. F5 or 5 key is your speedometer in miles per hour. F6 or 6 is a clock, how much time has past since the race started. F7 or 7 key tells you how far you have traveled in the race. F8 or 8 key gives the time difference between you and your nearestopponent.F10 or 0 key will allow the game to work better with brailledisplays. This feature toggles on or off, and your last setting issaved to disk at the end of the race. The next time you race, yoursetting will be used. This feature does two things. It leaves thecursor on the word of choice in the menu, and adds a punctuation<
br />mark to represent your speed and the pc speaker tone during therace. With a braille display you will get a dash for a normaltone, and an equals sign for a high tone. Now go and smell the gas and rubber, you will be running so closetogether, clawing for every tenth of a second, running closerwheel-to-wheel than you ever have before.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

This is such a nostalgia trip for me. Im enjoying this game a lot.I too would like to see some more of the old games get a rewrite. Of course, the one I really want to see is Shooting Range, but I know that Phil intends to do a major overhaul on that at some point. Still, I remember spending many, many afternoons blowing up propane tanks, and rescuing that poor cat from the trash bag. At least, I prefer to think I was rescuing it, although it sounded as though you mortally wounded it when you hit the bag, so who knows, lol.Either way, Breakout was my second favorite of the old PCS games, so Im ecstatic to be able to play it again.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

@Pitermach, nice game, Ive given it a try now. the sounds and music were extremely good, and I liked how the reaction test got sort of extreme in terms of where to fire to hit the walls. My only cryticism is the game really isnt that much like breakout beyond you hitting walls. In breakout you had a bat and bounced a ball around pong style, and the hole point of the game was to direct it to hit the wall. it would be entirely possible to create a breakout remake rather like the pong one, but giving you full directional control and testing your reactions with a moving shooter just isnt in any sense the same challenge. I dont know if this was from Phils original game or not. Id therefore suggest you change the name to something more reflective of the games gameplay. Wall shot, Block blaster, Target break, Shoot out (though that actually sounds more like a football game), something like that ie, something that is a little more reflectiv
e of what you do than indicative of the original breakout game, sinse to me breakout means bouncing a ball around an arena and trying to catch it on my bat, not accurate shooting.Accuracy tracking or game stats might be nice too, sinse with the viewpoint moving at such a ridiculous speed and the very nice variety of sounds for block destruction I wasnt always sure when I missed or hit a blank column by mistake.Either way, good job, and nice to see a good old arcade game again for a change.Btw, do you have a website for your games? And how about a developer/company name? The db is having some shenanigans at the moment but when its working this will be getting an entry (along with slender and angel gift and quite a few other things), so Id like to know what you want to be called .

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

Dark,Yes, pitermachs version is exactly like the old PCS dos game.As you break through the bricks you hear a higher pitch in the sound so you know that youve hit a part youve hit before.I know the original breakout requiered you to move back and forth along the bottom to catch the bouncing ball, but we thought at the time, that was going to be too dificult for most blind people to do.Breakout was a big hit with young kids and for some blind people with physical disabilities as you only had to hit the space bar to play.Petermach, I am willing to send or attach some of these games if you wish to convert them too:A 2 Z Key Search, Arthurs Quest, Car Racing Circuit,Duck Hunt, Fox And HoundsHaze Maze,Mind Puzzles, Mobius Mountain, Monopoly, Panzers In North Africa,Red Dragon Kick Boxing Challenge, Snipe Hunt, Space Invaders.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

Hi,First of all, Im glad youre enjoying the game.@Phil Sure, if you want to host it on your website, thats fine. Im now working on an update which plays the breakout theme, but also has the option to use the original sounds. I managed to break something in the process of adding that yesterday, but once I get that fixed We can take care of it.As far as porting other games, its definitely not out of the question. Its also very likely well be able to get an accessible talking DOS solution going thanks to mess once I can get someone sighted to help me configure the emulated machines bios properly and install freedos. Mess can emulate not only the Sound Blaster 16, but they also recently added Dectalk PC emulation so I think theres a big possibility getting something going will not be very hard.

Pitermach,I am happy you made an update to my game. However when I tried to unpack it with 7z I got 70 errors and the read me file was 0 bytes.I know 7z has the ability to make zip files which I often use myself. In the US I think zip is more universaly used than 7z.We made Breakout for DOS and a screen reader in 1998 and a DOS/Windows self voicing version in 1999.Here is the instruction for the screen reader version: BREAKOUT!SMASH! POW! CRUNCH! Is your hand/ear coordination upto demolishing wall after wall of objects? Breakout brings backthe nostalgia of early video gaming days but adds todayschallenges. Who ever said life was fair never played Breakout! Produced by &

Getting Started:This game was written for the DOS included with Windows 95 and 98.This is a DOS game and works best if you are in DOS using a DOS screen reader and hardware synthesizer. To install from Windows:1. You can read the file and pause at eachscreen, then hit any key to continue. You can hold down theCONTROL key and hit the BREAK or c key to get out of thisdocument atany time. At the end of the instructions, you go back to the mainmenu so youcan then play the games. Each game is played by one player at a time.In order to play a game you use the up and down arrow keys toreview the games, then choose one by hitting enter on the gamename.Imaginary graphics:Sinc
e this game was written for the blind it contains no costly andelaborate graphics that slow down game play. You will have to imagine the following screen layout:You are standing on a moving belt at the bottom of the screen. Toyour left and right are two spring mattresses. In front of you isa wall made out of several layers of breakable materials such asglass bricks. When the game starts, you will be traveling left and right on thebelt between the two spring barriers and you will hear a Boingsound when you hit one of the spring barrierss. At the start of thefirstturn you travel from the left barrier to the right, and on thesecond turn you travel from the right barrier back to the left. As you travel left and right you will hear quieter clickingsounds from your PC speaker. The clicking represents a soundbounced off each object as you pass it. When you throw the ball an
dknock an object out, the pitch of the click sound rises at thatpoint in the wall, representing a hole in that layer of objects. You press the Space bar, enter key or up arrow to shootthe ball. As you smash out the objects and break through layers inthe wall, , you will hear a faster and faster sound of thembreaking.Scoring:The objective in all of the games is to score the highest possiblenumber of points, or to score more points than your opponent.Points are scored by hitting the ball into the rows of objects. You can shoot three balls maximum between Boing barriers. If youtry to shoot more, you will get an empty shooter sound and not beable to hit objects until the next Boing barrier.Whenever you break through the last layer of objects thegame will play a cheer sound give you your score and the nextwall of objects will be set up.<br /

Modern PCS breakout rewrite

2015-01-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Modern PCS breakout rewrite

Looking at the recent discussions about old DOS games I decided to look back into getting some sort of accessible dos emulation going. In the meantime, while trying to figure out why dos screen readers dont really automatically echo anything I pooled out the various games I have for it, breakout being one of them and after playing it for a while I thought why not remake it for newer operating systems? Well, since I wanted to get back into programmingI decided to go for it and this is the resultThe name of the game and the modes are the same because I couldnt really think of anything better. All of the 4 modes are in, gameplay is pretty much unchanged. Compared to the original it has 15 walls vs 13 as well as background music, plus a few more audio queues to show how well youre scoring. I also changed the bust through mode a bit so you can get some bonus points if you can aim well so you can
expect to get higher scores than in the original. There is a readme included if youve never played the original breakout before. Also, if you find any bugs, let me know, its my first programming project in a few years and its my first program in pure basic so theres probably something Ive missed. Anyways, hope you have as much fun playing as I did making this.
