The team had the skills and means to make the quality of game that the founding pair never could have dreamed of making on their own. They were going to do something special for the community of gamers blind and sighted alike—all they needed was time…This past January, that community rallied around a Kickstarter project in awe-inspiring fashion. Suddenly, Out of Sight Games had the means to expand and develop this passion project more than they’d dared to hope. They finally had all the tools—all they needed was time…On December 29, 2017, that time will have come.We’re incredibly excited to announce the official release date for A Hero’s Call. On December 29, anyone who didn’t earn a free copy of the game by supporting our campaign will be able to purchase it directly from OutOfSightGames.com for $19.99 USD.You can expect more details about release in the coming weeks—but in the meantime, here are a few things to note: - This release will be completely non-visual, meaning it will not support graphics of any kind, and will be completely playable through sound. True Ironcross. I'm a fan of the Lufia series of RPG's which in Japan was called Estpolis. Well the first two games were released for the Super Nintendo. Five years after the second a third game was announced for the Game Boy Color. In mid development the story idea was scrapped in favor of a completely new one. That game suffered countless setbacks and was delayed by more than a year from its original projection. So it definitely happens even for Tripple-A developers. And even with all those delays the game, while fun, was still full of typos and bugs.

Well we all know what happens if we are to eager to get off the ground.Remember the james north saga.For all that are new here, setting a release date way before you are able to release and being to confident about it spells trouble.Life is a hard master, and so is time and well, stuff happens.But you have a date to do.Suddenly you are going over that date never mind you aunt died or you had to go to hospital for a couple years and suddenly you are overdue like a tax return or a library book overdue and getting flamed or fined for it as the case may be.Eventually you loose what reputation you have or cash taking the other thing and suddenly you are nothing.Its happened a bit to often where stuff was going to go out and well never happened on time.Look at breakerbox, good games, but all those preorders some I did, stuff not on time now breakerbox seems off the net completely.I think keeping tight about a release till there is actually one or you know there is one is a good idea.I had the same issue with some music and such and some other computer stuff I was ordering.The stuff said in a week, then it was 2 then 3 then 4 and eventually after a couple months I asked the seller, and they said there were issues getting it.6 months later I asked again and they admitted things just didn't pan out for that particular product or supply and I got my cash back.Sadly in most of the blindy preorders of games and such your cash is pritty much gone.So lesson is if you are going to have something, make sure you have something out and make sure it is.As for this game well it aint out yet, but we have a soundtrack at least and a few videos.Even if the game takes a bit longer now at least we have the music for it.

I wouldn't say I'm upset, just antsy. Yeah I mean if its gotta be 2018 please please early early early 2018 lol. Here's one thing though, as a player of mainstream games, devs think they can button up evreything, get to every possible contingency, then have a smooth launch, well it like, hardly ever works out that way, plenty of games have bad launches where many patches have to come out before its playable, now, true enough, a lot of those are multiplayer games, but yeah. You can also try to have a wide variety of hardware on your beta team, but that also doesn't guarantee that some weird configuration won't happen when the game hits the market and someone with an XP machine thinks they can play modern games. It's not such a bad thing with consoles, but it still is a thing.

Yeah. If he'd come on here and said the game would be out by June no questions asked and we were still waiting five months later, then I would be more upset. Too many devs have done just that in the past, and while I'm certain that some of them may have thought they would be able to meet that self-imposed deadline it hasn't helped the community's trust when it comes to new folks. I personally am expecting a 2018 release which in any case isn't necessarily all that far off, but we'll see. And 2018 would actually be more convenient for me since I'll be done paying off my extra expenses and will be able to shell out a little more for interesting new games and perhaps even help fund Kickstarter projects for others. I just wish I had something even close to Steven's talent for composition. I may not be able to program worth beans but if I could compose I could still contribute in a meaningful way.

Well we are discussing it in text, so sometimes what people say can come across as uptight whether they mean it to or not. I'm also impatient for the game to come out, especially now that the soundtrack is available and I have my own copy. I've been waiting impatiently for just this sort of game to hit our market for about fourteen years. With luck we'll have a release date soon, which will paradoxically make the wait both harder and easier if you get my drift LOL. You can be sure that when the game does come out Homer Simpson will probably be able to hear my impersonation of his excited woo-hoo! LOL.

Haha, there's one game I am thinking about now. Do you know the Legacy of kain series? Inn my opinion it's really fantastic series and I remember the situation where third party developers tried to develop the continuation of that.As far as I know the game was excellent as I watched a lot of videos of early gameplays and it was cancelled dueto some problems.Just be patient and I hope the game will give you a lot of fantastic experiences!

Haha, that game is definitely a perfect example for how not to pace a project. On the flip side, though, I've played, or been exposed to, so many games that were so close to being amazing, but then something just felt unfinished—a rushed ending, sloppy or missing content, and so on. Usually that's because the developers are trying to stick to an artificially imposed timeline, rather than letting the project take as much time as it needs. And that's with big triple-A studios. Anyway, that's not to excuse simply dragging our feet, and we also recognize that there is value in setting a fixed release date. We just want to be sure all our ducks are in a row first. But hopefully we've at least convinced you all that the project will be released, unlike some developers who may announce a project and then disappear without a trace, leaving us all to wonder if anything is going to be done.

There is one game that comes to my mind when I think of overdue games: Duke Nookum Forever, I believe was the one, that took about twenty years to come out? Somewhere around that, it may have been a big exaggeration, but it took so long to develop, it had to be recoded for different consoles time and again.

IronCross...if you're impatient, imagine how we feel? If you'd poured multiple years of your time and effort into a project, and hoped to have it done by a certain point, only to find yourself five months past that point, I bet you'd be even more impatient than you already are. It's easy to forget that when a developer hasn't released a game, it's not because they enjoy the wait. Take it from me—they don't. My hope is that, once an official release date is announced, what waiting remains to be done will be easier since there is a definite end point. But, given how far off our original estimate we were, I'm sure you can understand why we've been reluctant to officially commit to a date without being absolutely sure that we will be able to hold to it.

LOL my only problem with Paypal is I use it so infrequently these days that I can never remember my password. But while I normally like to have a playable demo to help me choose whether or not a game is worth putting forth money on I can already tell from the video clips we've gotten over the last year that this is going to be right up my alley. Granted I may not be able to buy it right away when it comes out, depending of course on when that ends up being, but definitely at the first available opportunity. I want to complete the Talisman quest for myself LOL.

Rather, we already have a release date we're planning for, but want to wait until we're sure that we can commit to that date before we announce. So, at the moment, the longer we go without announcing a date, the shorter the wait.Of course it is possible that in the process of getting through this one technical thing we want to be sure won't delay us too much, we encounter delays that require us to shift our intended date. But either way, I can't say how long you'll have to wait after the announcement.What I can say is that, hopefully, whatever date we announce, it will be a lot easier to wait with a fixed date in mind than to wait with no date, wondering if the release will ever come. You'll actually be able to count down the days, instead of just sitting and wondering.Pre-order and early access are both something we've discussed some and are working out exactly what we want to do. Those details may be announced along with the release date, or shortly after if we haven't nailed them down yet. For the record, we will not announce anything about pre-order or early access until a release date has been announced (so, no need for anyone to ask again before then); and as soon as we have decided how they will be handled, we will announce them (so again, it really won't do much good to ask us, since if we haven't announced it, that means we haven't decided yet).PS - I should also mention that, when we do announce a release date, I plan to post it in a separate thread, so nobody misses it. Just so you know that there's no chance of it getting buried in a post on this thread.

Yeah we're really close. In fact, I don't mind sharing that there was talk of announcing the release date sometime this week. But one of the team members requested another week or so to spend with something that has the potential to slow us down—basically he wants to be sure that some of the potential delays won't happen, before we commit to a date that might be too son if the delays do happen. ...that probably makes no sense, but the important thing is, we're very close to announcing the release date—and then the wait will have a definite end-point. Which is awesome.

Yeah when we first started work on the soundtrack, Steven was all excited about this new virtual choir he'd bought—actually I think he may have purchased it with the first installment of his payment. And I can definitely hear why he was excited. Interesting thought—there's probably a reason that so many choirs in soundtracks sing in something like Latin rather than English—because all of the sounds are much more consistent in Latin, so you can select from a standard set of vowels and consonants...you don't have all these weird diphthongs and such that we have in English.

Many game soundtracks, especially indie ones, have synthe choirs... they can sound amazingly good if handled right. Most video game music nowadays is done with virtual instruments and midi, you just couldn't tell because of how realistic they sound. Some synthe choirs have built in articulations, so that it sounds like they're singing words... which is why a lot of the time, while it sounds really cool, they aren't singing in any particular language.

Sorry for the double post, but I have another question: how moddable the game will be? I mean, will I be able to script custom expansions to the game? Or everything is packed in the .exe and modding is impossible?In games like my favourite Gothic trilogy, people can create avesome expansions to the orginal game, adding new quests, items, or even creating whole new storylines in the game's universe.

I've just had an idea, Joseph... It would help get news of the game around more, as well.  So, I already know that this game is going to be enjoyable, and I know I'll want to play it a few times. If you wanted, I could possibly, after a few playthroughs, write up a game novelization that could be published through, say, Amazon, then people would hopefully stumble upon the book and become intrigued.

I was actually going to comment on that. RTT, I imagine you'll be able to turn the music down or up to your preference, that seems to be a basic game feature and has been for pretty much the entire game history, meaning all games. Also, I do like the fact that this is not one of those scores you'll have to turn up your phone, computer, etc to hear.

Aaron: Thank you so much. You have no idea how much that means. At the end of the day, our motivation is you guys. We want to make something that people will enjoy—we want to create the sort of experience that so many gamers have never had, or like me, once had and now have lost. Sure, we want the game to be commercially successful, and would be thrilled if it played a part in changing the conversation surrounding game accessibility, and we really have no idea how far it'll go—but ultimately, we just want to make something special for players. Knowing our hard work is appreciated, and makes it a lot easier to put in the effort.Dragomier: Story and quests are my department, and I'm always happy to chat about the process—such as it is...but I'll be honest, I don't know how much light I can shed. i just kinda write, and see what happens. Sometimes I look at a quest, or even at the game's whole storyline, and think, "Ugh, I should go back and redo the whole thing!" I guess when we release, you'll have to let me know whether or not the writing is up to snuff.

Hello, Joseph, I've remembered my question. Do you possibly have sheet music for the tracks? Because I'd love to propose these to my band teacher for one of our two concerts, or he could have orchestra do some. If not, I understand, as it was done digitally, but maybe you had some for the composer to look at when creating things? Also if it's a copyright thing, I understand that too.  I also think it would be cool to do after the graphical release, because we always, if playing game or movie themes, have images on the screen behind us. I could imagine how cool it would be to have A Hero's Call graphics behind us while playing the theme. Which, for the record, I can't stop humming.

Ha no, that'd be pretty amazing if a printed score exists, but to the best of my knowledge, none does. Everything I gave Steven was in the form of midi stems, and even if I was to make sheet music from those original compositions, it wouldn't sound anything like what you hear on the score because of how much orchestration Steven did. Well, we appreciate your patience. I know the AG community has gotten burned plenty of times in the past, and we didn't want to start talking about the game too early for fear of people thinking the same thing was happening again. The last leg of development has definitely taken us longer than we expected, and I'm sure some people have thought, "Oh no, not this again." But I just can't say enough about the commitment of this team...there really have been so many times that we could've just said it's not worth the effort, and having been through the process myself, I can definitely understand why so many devs make big promises and then fall through. But we promised ourselves we wouldn't go public until we were 100% committed to releasing the game, and that commitment still stands.

Ironcross: That's a good question, and really we're going to have to wait and see how release goes, as some of our decisions may be informed by how much the game brings in, and what kind of a budget we have to work with for whatever we do next. The first order of business is going to be getting the graphics in place and working on the final release—the plan is for the audio-only release to be part one of a two-phase release. Once we have the game finalized with full graphics we'll release it to the indie gaming world at large, hopefully including releasing on other marketplaces like Steam. That's the plan, anyway. Oh, and don't worry—even though I call it a second release, it's really just an update. You won't have to purchase the game again if you want the final, full-graphics version.But apart from that, we don't know for sure what the future holds. We've definitely talked about DLC and it would be a lot of fun to expand the world of AHC, whether with new characters, areas, classes, etc. But on the flip side, for a small team with as little dev time as we have, we're not sure if we can justify spending the time on making DLC when we could instead be spending it working on a second full title. So a lot of those decisions will come as we see what sort of income the game generates, and gauge what sort of dev time we have.

Same, I feel that if I woke up early in the morning, discovered that the game was released I think sleep will flew away . Iron cross, I'm curious, what's that game you've spent subconsciously 14 hours playing it? I remember when I first got my ps2 in 2003 or 2004 and that was in the morning, I suddenly found myself at knight when I realized that I was spending the whole day playing the different games with my brother  .

Sometimes when a new game comes out I'll play it for like 14 hours straight and not realize it. One time I did this, didn't realize it, I bought the game at 8 in the morning, felt hungry, went to get lunch and it was dark out, I thought I was playing for maybe 4 hours, it was like 14 until I was done and all that time went by and I didn't even notice. I do hope the game world is pretty large in that it gives a sense of being in a world, and not cordoned off always hitting walls and stuff. But yeah I am on the edge of my seat with this one, I still do need to listen to the soundtrack all the way through as I've purchased it but then got distracted with other stuff. As I've said before, if I like this game, I'll definitely be kicking in more money on the site, because I feel like $15 or even $20 is a disservice to all the work you guys have put into pioneering the first audiogame of its type, that being open world, AAA title. I'll throw down at lea
 st $100 plus the purchase price.One question I do have is, do you guys intend on providing DLC, stuff with further quests, different adventures to go on, or is everything that is going to be in the game, in it. Also, looking down the road a ways, what will you guys do next?

There is a feeling that, above all else, I love. And that is waking up at 5-30 A.M. on a game's release date, half asleep and filled with excitement... I know that is what will come with this game. I'll rush to buy the game before school and rush off to it, do my work half-mindedly, then rush home and get absolutely nothing done as I binge play the game... Ahh, the good times.

So, I just got off a Skype call with the team, and I've got to tell you, there is something electric in the air. I think it's a combination of the renewed excitement generated by the soundtrack, and the fact that the end is in sight and we're getting really close to nailing down a release date...it's a great feeling. And the team is doing such awesome work. It's really a privilege to be a part of a project like this—and you all, with your enthusiasm and excitement and encouragement, are a big part of giving us this boost of energy. Just wanted to share that. Unfortunately I have no specific exciting details to share from tonight's meeting—just wait a little longer.

Agreed with Muhammad—you don't want us to spoil too much info on the game world...but, moreover, I don't know how we could give a satisfactory description of how "big" the game world is anyway. It's not like a real place, which can be described in square feet or miles or anything like that.

Rory, yes it's a world with different places and adventures, you can read more about that from their site. Well I think mentioning and specifying how big the world is, or how does it look like will be a spoiler for us, so I'd prefer exploring and finding all of that ourselves.
