Hi,
I might suggest looking at the various volumes by Gaspar Frutuoso's
Saudades da Terra. Some of his info should go further back than the RR
book.

RR is out of print. Volume 1 was.around $50 or $60 U.S. Dollars. The whole
set was around $600.
Manita, you may find select volumes of Insulana of interest. Volume IV of
Saudades da Terra by Gaspar Frutuoso is about S.Miguel, but

Ok, that makes sense, since it states that Joze's paternal grandparents are
unknown.
I have another ancestor from another branch and he to was left at the
"Roda" of the Câmara, and later records states him also as "da Camara".
Thanks Linda and Cheri!

Hi All,
I am wondering if anyone is researching or has any information on the
family of Joao Sousa Soares who married Barbara Costa. They lived in Santo

1690's. Unfortunately, it seems that the records from those years were

The record in question is on the right page. I am having trouble figuring
out the surname of the grooms mother (I am leaning towards de Campos), and
the given name of the brides father. If I read the top correctly they were
married on 15 Aug 1774 in Mae de Deus. Towards the bottom it states
I borrow Saudade from the NYU library all the time - Volume IV has three
separate books - I, II, and III. I think it's book III that includes a
handy index of first names, last names, and place names. I'm pretty much
the only person who borrows these books at NYU.

Saudades da Terra is divided into 6 Livros (books) and until a few years ago,
Book IV (S. Miguel), the largest of the books, was divided into 3 volumes. (So
the complete set was 8 volumes long). The most recent edition, slipcased, is 6
volumes long. Edna, of happy memory, translated the first

The Rodrigo Rodrigues book is supposed to be out-of-print but I am told that
there are a few copies left at the Instituto Cultural de Ponta Delgada. You can
probably find them on line and e-mail/telephone them. They are very heavy
volumes and probably cost around $600.00.

2 weeks from today I will be in Ponta Delgada looking for genealogy books! I
am interested in purchasing an original copy of RR's book for example.
Assuming it's affordable as I'm running out of cash with all the DNA testing

What other books are worth purchasing?

I do not know if it available in anything other than hard copy.It is a
multi-volume set costing over $1,000.00. There is a copy available at the Casa
