Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Lorenzo, Antony

2014-01-28 Thread luiznoia .
Jane,

If you can get a birthdate from the cemetery, then maybe I can locate his
baptism record in Flores. He would be recorded there as Antonio Lourenco,
and I would guess the de Fraga comes from the mother's family. The parents
may be Manuel Lourenco and Maria ( de Conceicao, de Jesus, de Gloria, etc)
with de Fraga parents.

These name combinations point toward the north of the island.

Thank you - Anthony married Agnes Eliza McGirty in Sydney NSW in 1874 aged

he died 4 April 1905 in Balmain , Sydney aged 54 years, I have the
marriage certificate 16.2.1874 his parents are listed as Manuel Lorenzo (
Sailor) and Mary - rights of roman catholic church. Also have his death
certificate but have not been able to find anything about his parents or
 life before Australia

Only references to birth that I have are:
 - his marriage certificate -16.2.1874 lists him as a sailor aged 23 years
 - his naturalisation certificate - 9 august 1888 - lists him arriving in
Australia in 1861, and advising he is 34 years old, says he is a native of
 Flores, West Island, Azores
 - his first son was named Antoni George on his birth certificate (
3.11.1877 in Balmain Sydney) and the father is named as Antoni George
Larence - Mariner , aged 27 from Portugal

I do not have a birth date yet - but will shortly visit his grave in
Rookwood cemetery and that might help with a date of birth

 Jane,

I've worked with 2 other people who had ancestors from Flores, Azores who
immigrated to Australia or New Zealand. I'm familiar with the databases
available for Australian passenger and shipping lists.
I've checked a number of databases, but none showed a Triton arrival
for 1861. That particular year has a gap in the records of ships arriving
 at New South Wales.

The son's name with the de Frayer may give a clue, likely originally
being: de Fraga. Who did Anthony Lorenzo marry ?

Can you give some more information; his birthdate, marriage information ?
With birth information he may be found in the parish baptism records of
Flores at the CCA - azores government archives site

2014-01-28 Thread rcapodc
I know Rick, I have it in my binder that I bring with me to SLC! It also goes
with me weekly to the FHC just-in-case! It really helps when you get into a new
village and aren’t familier with the names. I know I found my
8xgreatgrandparents marriage and the Dad’s name was Ilario, first I couldn’t
figure out the name (had to look at the word I knew, Igresia) and then had to
look in the Paleography to see that it was Hilario in modern day spelling! A
real must if you are going to doing your own researching!

Aaron,

If you don’t already have the Basic Portuguese Paleography booklook, you need
to download it from the Azores GenWeb site. In it, it has a list of Surnames
and also a list of Given names. I’ve found it invaluable in figuring out names

Have you checked the records of Santa Casa Misericordia which is part of

unless this person can trace her Ana back to Ponta Delgade I would not get
too excited about it. Your Ana's daughter Maria de Jesus Agusta Teves did
not immigrate until she was 50 years old leads me to believe her mother was
most likely deceased by that time (1900) or did not want to move in her old
age (if she was still alive she would be 90 years old).*

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hawaiian Marriages

On Monday, December 16, 2013 9:36:12 AM UTC-8, Cheri Mello wrote:

 Interesting Eric E.

I few years ago I was in Hawaii and I went on a tour of a sugar plantation
there. The tour guide did say that the first wave of laborers were Chinese
bachelors. And China is on a continent. Being a bunch of bachelors who
weren't used to an island environment created a bit of a dilemma. I don't
remember the tour guide's exact words anymore, but being bachelors they
partied too much after hours, rabble roused, went stir-crazy due to being
on islands, etc. So the plantation owners thought that bringing over
entire families who were used to living on islands would be much more
calming. So they initially recruited from the Azores and Madeira, which
was successful, then from the Philippines.

Correct. The plantation owners realized that a lot of these single men
would (usually) fulfill their contract and immediately return home with
what they've earned. This was after they began recruiting from Japan. So
they realized that recruiting people by families would allow the laborers
not to leave and continue to work. So that's what they did with Portugal
and found that those who lived on islands were well suited to remain in the
Hawaiian islands.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Legitimate vs Natural

In the CCA baptism records, I see that some are worded as legitimate and
others are worded as natural, and the latter seem to omit the father.
What is the difference? why is the father omitted in the naturals?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Legitimate vs Natural

2014-01-28 Thread Cheri Mello
David J. L.,

A legitimate child was born in wedlock. A natural child was born out of
wedlock. Many times the mother would not name the father. Once in a while
she would. And having the mom baptize the child and not name the father is
much more common in the Azores. Probably Madeira too, but I don't work
much with those records. I remember George Pacheco telling me it was much
more common in Cape Verde that both parents are stated when then are
unwed. Just a different philosophy or cultural difference between the
island groups.

Now that records are online, I'll see if I can find my cousin's doozy. It
is a baby, natural, born to the mom, wife of so-and-so and to dad, single,
the adulterer! I double checked the dictionary to be sure, and
technically, the mom was the adulterer (as I thought). Dad should not have
been fooling around with a married woman, but I don't know of a word for a
single man that does that. Well, modern day slang has words for it, (he's
a player comes to mind) but that's not helpful in genealogical records.

A natural child is one where the parents were not married to each other bur
neither parent was married to somebody else. There was no adultery involved,
only two people coming together without benefit of clergy. In other words, they
were free to marry each other if they so desired. An illigitimat child is one
where the parents were not married to each other, nor could they be, since one
or both were already married to somebody else. That is my understanding.

Somewhere I remember reading a record Which went like this (Names made up.)
Manoel filho de Jose de Arruda and Maria de Jesus mulher de Manoel de Sousa.
That left no question what the situation was. I also remember reading a
record that only listed the father's name and fathers parents nothing about
the mother or her parents. Just when you think you have seen them all you
find something different.

As others have said filho legitimate is if the couple are married and filho
natural is if they were not married.

2014-01-28 Thread Cheri Mello
John R,

Yes, there are 3 ways to list the baptism and I just made it 2 ways.
Legitimate: Parents are married
Natural: Parents are NOT married
Illegitimate: One parent married to someone else, as you stated.

That is, if the priest follows the rules (which they do, most of the time).

Now to find that record of illegitimate and post it!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] genealogy program

2014-01-28 Thread Cheri Mello
GGervais,

You'll get people telling you that the best program is the one they are
using. That's not going to help you. If you want certain things in a
program and can tell us, that may steer you towards one program or the
other.

The 4 most popular in the PC market are:
Family Tree Maker (FTM), Legacy, RootsMagic, and The Master Genealogist.

You already know about FTM.

Legacy has their Standard Edition (free) and their Deluxe (pay). So
download Legacy and play around with it: www.legacyfamilytree.com The
Deluxe has about 100 extra bells and whistles.

RootsMagic also has a free editions. They call it their Essentials.
Download that and play around with it too: www.rootsmagic.com/essentials I
don't know how many extra bells and whistles their paid version has.

The Master Genealogist (TMG) allows you to explore their full program for
30 days free (and then it locks you out). www.whollygenes.com Download
that and play around with it (but make sure you have close to a month to
peruse it. Trying to figure that program out 2 days before it expires is
like doing a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle in 1 hour).

I go over all 4 programs in a lecture in Salt Lake. Your local genealogy
society may have speakers. Request that they find a speaker that can
lecture on genealogy software.

General overview of the 3 you haven't tried:
RootsMagic probably has the smallest learning curve. However, I've read
that some people find that they outgrow that program rather easily.
However, there's a RM User Group at one of my local genealogy societies,
and there are a couple of engineers in there. So it's whatever makes you
happy.

Legacy has a pleasing user interface and a smaller learning curve. It can
be a fairly powerful program, too. It's Source Writer is absolutely
fantastic. No other program has a source feature like that. I'd have to
look up the cons for Legacy.

TMG is the most powerful program out there. They have a bit of a learning
curve, but they have tried to do things to make it easier (they have a
beginner's mode vs. an advanced mode). Their filtering feature is awesome
(you have to practice learning how to use it, though). And it's just about
completely customizable too. So you don't like the user interface out of
the box, you can change it.

When I bought a genealogy program in the mid-90s (I think this was back in
the Windows 3.1 days), I had 2 criteria. 1) It had to have a character
field long enough to take a city name the length of Ribeira das Tainhas or
Vila Franca do Campo. 2) It had to take diacritics. Those accented
letters. I wanted the names to be written properly. I wanted José de
Mello, not Jose de Mello. Only 1 program on the market could do that at
that time. Now, it's a moot point. They can all do that.

So if you have any specific concerns for a genealogy program, ask away. Or
try all 3 and then ask away. But make fake family and marry yourself to
yourself, mess up on dates and make someone born after they died, make
someone have a baby out of wedlock, etc. See how each program handles or
display these things.

Also, depending on where you live, see if there is User Group in your area
(all the web sites above have a User Groups section where you can check to
see if there is one in your area). We get people dropping in to our group
wanting to see what the program is like before they purchase it.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] genealogy program

2014-01-28 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel

I used Family Tree Maker for a number of years and for the most part I liked
it. I started finding that there were things I could not do with it in
searching and printing so after much consideration I got The Master
Genealogist. The first thing is that it is not upgraded every year to a new
version which you have to spend another $40 to get the latest version. I bought
TMG about 4 years ago about $80 and since then FTM has changed times. So while
the initial cost is higher in the long run it is cheaper. With FTM I never used
the on line tree or signed up for Ancestry which I do not need.

The program is difficult to learn and takes time but the more I use it the
better I like it. Cheri has been using it much longer then me so perhaps she
will chime in.

According to the info I've got on http://tombo.pt/f/pdl19, this parish
was branched off São Pedro in 1838.

Does anyone know if the Parish of Sao Vicente Ferreira in S. Miguel was

 Delgada was done.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] genealogy program

2014-01-28 Thread Cheri Mello
Geez, Rick, thanks for blowing my cover! LOL

TMG has the Silver Edition for $34 (download only) or $40 (CD Rom and
electronic Users Guide). The Gold Edition is $60 (download only) or $70
(CD-ROM electronic Users Guide). There is a chart that explains the
difference: http://goo.gl/IAjTsk

The current version is 8.0. To go from 7.0 to 8.0, I paid $30. And when
they come up with version 9.0, it will be something along those lines. And
it will take them 2 or 3 years to come out with 9.0

I started with TMG 2.5 in the mid-90s. Here it is, almost 20 years later
and TMG is up to version 8.0. That's 6 version changes in 20 years, which
averages out to you shelling out more money every 3.3 years.

I like the filtering. If I'm trying to figure out my Ponta Garca people,
so I can run the filter for everyone born in Ponta Garca. Or married in
Ponta Garca. Or, or, or. OR, it can be and, and, and. This does take some
time to learn. I also like customizing my Pick List. This is the index
of people. Mine is set up to show the names, date of birth, date of death,
father's name, mother's name, and spouse's name. So, if I'm looking at my
25 Manuel Silvas, I can really see which one I want to work on. There are
other fields I can put in too (or take out).

I pretty much like it how it comes out to the box. The main screen shows
my subject person and all their details/events that happened in their
life. So if it was displaying my immigrant ancestor, I would see the
birth, immigration, censuses, WW1 Draft, dispensation (I had to make a
tag or event for that), marriage(s), children, occupation, death,
burial. All of that, right there, in my face. Not hidden behind an icon.
I like that. To the right of that screen, I have 3 boxes: His children,
his siblings, and his associates. Some people have their Flags open. I
toggle that one off and on.

I also have a couple of other layouts. I have one for the projector at
my genealogy society. That's no big deal, really. I also have one called
Project Explorer where I have my Details window open and my Pick List
open. This is for me to clean my database. Well, split it. Should have
split my dad's Portuguese lines from his American lines years ago before
merging it with my mom's. My mom has no Portuguese ancestry and is not
related to him that way. Yeah, DNA proved that they are 6th cousins, but
it's on my dad's one an only German line way back in the 1740s.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Miguel people in Sao Jorge!

2014-01-28 Thread rcapodc
Hi List,

While searching for relatives in Norte Grande, Sao Jorge, I can across two
different men from Sao Miguel and their wives having children:

1892 Image #9: Constancia born to Joao Silveira Brazil and his wife Constancia
dos Anjos. Joao is listed as being a native of Sao Jose de Ponta Delgada, Sao
Miguel and is the son of Joaquim Silveira Brazil Anna de Jesus.. His wife,
Constancia dos Anjos is from Norte Grande.

1892 Image #9: Adelaide born to Francisco Jose Moreira? and Maria do Rosario.
Francisco is a native of Villa Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel and is the son of
Maria Euphrazia, single. Maria do Rosario is from Norte Grande.

Just thought I would make a note of the two births to men from Sao Miguel just
in case you have no clue where they went to marry!

California DMV I DO NOT miss that institution. The only thing slower, in my

Nah, that noise you hear from down here? That's me, banging my head
against the wall after calling Salt Lake AGAIN to try to get the computer
lab classroom confirmation. Guess what! She was just getting read to
work on it now! Amazing, huh? And I got to call the DMV too, in regards to
getting my mom an Identification Card. That's been going on since last
 June. UGH!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Legitimate vs Natural

2014-01-28 Thread Tomas Leal
To add a little spice to this discussion . . .

On the registration of my great-grandparents' marriage, natural is used
in the sense of native of or born in. For example, my great-grandfather
is described as natural, baptisado, e moradôra da rua de Igreja desta
freguesia, which I understand as born, baptized, and living in Rua de
Igreja of this parish. He is further described as the filho legitimo of
his parents who also are naturais of the same parish, as is my
great-grandmother. Her parents, in contrast, are from two different
villages, Flamengos and Almoxarife, though both clearly lived in Flamengos
at the time of the marriage. The father was described as natural dos
Flamengos and the mother as natural do Almoxarife.

Seems the translation of natural can shift depending on context.
