2020-01-14 Thread JR
I thought I acknowledged the error in my earlier comments. How it got there
I don't recall. I just made some other corrections taken from the Ribeira
Quente casamentos index.

Bottom line, check your files against the records if you want to be
accurate.

2020-01-09 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Elaine,

I don't even have Claudina's date of birth. I have her dad b. 28 Jan 1832
(bapt 5 Feb) in RQ. I have her mom born as c. 1817. Maybe that
approximation came from the marriage?

I have only 2 siblings for Claudina.
1) Maria (marries as Maria de Jesus Silva) b. 26 Dec 1855 RQ and bapt on
the 30th. She married 7 Feb 1877 in RQ to Joao de Sousa. They had a Maria
b. 25 May 1879 in RQ and baptized 2 June.
2) Pulqueira (spelled as Pulcheria), b. 5 May 1871 RQ and bapt. on the 9th.

That's all that I have on the siblings. I'm not related on this line. I
think the work was Shirley Allegre's.
Hope this helps, Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with translation, please!

2020-01-08 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Elaine,

I did find one record but JR posted it this morning and he had 2 more kids.

The first Manuel died before the 2nd was born. Yes, a family can have 2
(or more) Marias all alive. Typically, the oldest went by Maria and the
other(s) went by their middle (usually religious) name.

The children who did not come over on the 1902 emigration must have died
before that emigration registration date.

You'll have to check for Antonio and Claudina under Silva, as you mentioned.

2020-01-08 Thread Elaine Mello
Thank you both - I find it strange that there are two Manuels and two
Marias, unless the older ones died before the second one was born.
Virginia and Francisco are new ones to me as well. Looking at the
emigration documents, it was the older Maria who came over in 1902 and the
second Manuel, looking at their ages on the Ellis Island documentation. It
may be that Francisco died on the trip over. - he definitely left with them
according to that link I guess I'll never know that story.Perhaps the
older Manuel stayed behind. I'll have to do some more digging to see what
I can find.

I haven't been able to fine Antonio or Claudina's deaths in the U.S., so I
wonder if they went back at some point. Though given the way they all
changed their names in the census, it might just be under Silva, which they
used as well.

This is great information! Thank you so much!

2018-09-11 Thread Cheri Mello
Could the priest write any smaller? Sheesh!

The mom got me too. But when you stated her parents, then I understood the
mom. Julia Maquina Leonor, I think. Need another set of eyes to double
check. So your Marquesa and Magenia is Maquina.

On the maternal grandfather, we need another set of eyes. I think the pen
was picked up in the middle. I think his name is something like Pancrecio
Machado Evangelho.

You could also get the marriage of the parents too. It will state the names
of the parents of the bride and groom. Maybe a different scribe wrote it.

Suzanne C,

There are 3 records on the link you provided. Can you name your ancestor?
Can you pick anything at all out of the record?

It burns out the translators when the record is translated and the person
writes back, "Oh that ancestor is not mine." So we want to be sure we are
translating a record for your ancestor and it's not a wild guess.

Bob C,

I'm not sure of the word after the father's name. It is capitalized. I
don't know if it's an alcunha or his occupation. Maybe someone else will
get it or another record will have it (and NOT hyphenated).

You are correct on Rosa Candida. She is from somewhere else. "...natural da
Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Luz da ilha da Graciosa, deste Diocese..."

So "...native of the freguesia of Nossa Senhora da Luz of the island of
Graciosa, of this Diocese" Go back and take a look. I'm sure you'll
see it now. You're making great progress! Keep up the good work.

Bob, it's not Windows 10. It's the wording for the request. You posted a
link to a baptism and said you are not sure of the information "in the
index and the other information." You posted no index. You posted a
baptism. I don't know what you want for "other information." I and others
aren't going to guess and tell you the priest said the baby was baptized at
home just to have you come back and say "I wanted the godparents." So if
you can explain what you mean by "index" and "other information" someone
will help you. We just want to be sure. :) Thanks! Cheri

Can you be more specific? You didn't post a link to any index, so I can't
help you there. And "other information" is kinda broad and leaves us
guessing at to what you really need. So can you tell us? Thanks, Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Translation

2017-03-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Maria da Conceicao (Conceição with diacritics). If you are looking at a
woman's name and it starts with Con and has diacritics at the end, you can
start to figure out it's Conceição.

The first words of the record says:
Aos vinte e seis (although that last word almost looks like "seil" but if
you pull out your word list, the only number that starts with "sei" is seis
and if you look at the rest of his "s" you'll see that they are rather
closed and almost look like a lower case "L."

Groom's mom: Maria Rosa. Some squishy "s."

Bride: Maria da Conceição daughter of Sergio Silveira, native of Nossa
Senhora da Boa Nova on Pico, and Maria Eugenia, of this parish. Bride of
this parish too.

I'd guess the 7th too.

Slaves don't seem very common to me. Most of the population seemed to be
poor back then. Others who know the history better should probably start a
new thread and discuss that question there, as we are veering off topic
here from this translation.

Azores and I have seen some passports from Martins Gouveia’s who have gone to
Brazil but never heard of Hawaii realtives before. There is always a first,

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1846-1851/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1846-1851_item1/P180.html

I’m having a little trouble reading the dates of the birth and baptism of
my Great Granfather. I believe the birth is 14 January 1851 and the baptism
is 25 January 1851. I’m also trying to understand which family is from
Rosto de Cão and which is from Rabo de Peixe. Any translation help is
greatly appreicated.

Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with translation of passport from Braganca, dated March 26, 1917

2015-06-13 Thread Carolyn M

Any help with translating this passport would be greatly appreciated.

This is the passport of the grandfather of my cousin’s cousin. The
passport is listed under Francisco Manuel Aleixo on the top left on left
page. Francisco is No. 130. This passport would be the fourth passport I
found on him. I have found 4/1/1902, 12/22/1910 and 11/21/1919 with his
family accompanying him.

On this passport, it says that he is going to France and no family is
accompanying him. I can’t read where he is going in France or the
explanation. I do see where it mentions a decree of some sort. Would this
have anything to do with World War 1?

Here is the link and the name of the file. So the link will take you to
the book, and then you will have to scroll down to find that .tif file. This
is a bit cumbersome…I’m sorry but I don’t know of another way to quickly
get to the document.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Translation for Maria

2014-07-18 Thread Diane George
I think that the parents of Maria are Maneol Jose and Maria Josefa. The
words after his name are and of his wife (de sua mer). I believe that the
godparents (padrinhos) are Jose and Maria, children of Antonio Jorge and his
wife Josefa Isabel. I don't find any information about the parents of either
Manoel or Maria (paterna or materna). I am still a novice at this so
hopefully someone else can give this a try.

The parish name is Nossa Senhora da Ajuda (Our Lady of Help), just like the
parish in the village of Prainha do Norte on the island of Pico.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with translation Pedro Miguel

2014-03-29 Thread aportugee
Help please. Following is a link to what I think may be my 2nd great uncle’s
birth but; I’m having trouble deciphering the names. It’s the bottom left
baptism.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-PEDROMIGUEL-B-1806-1826/FAL-HT-PEDROMIGUEL-B-1806-1826_item1/P105.html

Here is what I think I have deciphered:

Antonio, son of Manoel Francisco de ?? ?? born in the frequezia de
Nossa Senor de Ayuda, place of Pedro Miguel, paternal grandson of Antonio
Francisco and of Maria Francisca, maternal grandson of Antonio da Rosa and of
Anna Francisca. Born on the 28th day of the month of September of the year 1819
and was baptized by me, Vicar on the third dia of the month of
October of the same year. Godparents were Antonio do Rosa and his wife,
Dominaga Francisca. Witnesses ??? Antonio Furtado,

Many thanks for any help with this one.. Sam in Maz

2014-03-29 Thread aportugee
Pam; Yes! This is the right one!! In other records, I have Manuel Francisco
with the surname of Catharino. Is that surname not on this record? Everything
else matches with what I already have.

Thanks you so much Pam!

Can anyone else tell me if what I have translated is correct and/or fill in the
blanks that I have.

Many thanks, Sam in Maz
