White-winged gulls are back at the Dump off Erb St (near Ira Needles Blvd).
Observed a pristine adult Glaucous Gull in breeding/alternate plumage, with
solid white head, bright yellow bill and orbital ring, clean grey back and
white primaries showing no signs of molt. Also a 1st winter
2 great Egrets flying southeast over the intersection of Fischer-Hallman and
Westmount at 7:42pm. Most likely flying from laurentian wetlands to Huron
Natural Area to roost for the night. No tags visible. This is a common flight
path for great blue herons each night through the summer/fall.
back to pick through the Spruce Trees in Silence.
Directions: 401 to 35/115, exiting for Ganaraska road, and then proceeding
north on Langstaff to 8700 range (check the ravine on the east side of the
road, and have some patience).

Recent weather or perhaps just the passage of time seems to be changing the mix
of shorebirds at West Perth Wetlands.

7 species of gull today at the fountain in the boardwalk shopping plaza
immediately west of the traffic circle at Ira Needles Blvd and University Ave.
Gulls feeding in the dump behind the plaza come to rest at the fountain and

today representing the full spectrum from bleached white to adult Kumlien's. I
estimate there was at least 5 1st cycle Thayer's Gulls, and 7 Iceland Gulls

Two adults and one suspected second-cycle bird allowed for extended study from
1:30-2:15pm in the pond located SW of the intersection of Ira Needles blvd. and
Victoria St. S. Gulls appear to be feeding at the dump, then resting on the
roof of Sobey's...and then preening in the pond. At
At the intersection/roundabout of Victoria St and Ira Needles, on the small
pond beside the harveysobserved and photographed 2 adult, 2 juvenile Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, and 2 juvenile Greater Black-backed Gulls. There was a
good number of ring-billed and Herring gulls to study as
it to the end at Lakegate. Turn
left on Lakegate, there is parking on the street just before Grays Road.
Look out from the small parkette at the end of Grays.

on Niagara to Lakeshore. Cross the
canal and make your first left follow the roads along the canal and park at the
gate. The
walk out is quite far. Go to the 'pond' on the east side.

Lagoons were virtually empty, with not a single shorebird present. Ducks
consisted of Lesser Scaup pair, Green-winged Teals, Ruddy Ducks, Ring-necked
Ducks. Also 4 Bonaparte's gulls feeding.
Went to the beach in search of gulls and was not dissappointed. Amongst
hundreds of Bonaparte's and
Sadly i was not able to observe either Avocets or little gulls at Port Burwell
today. 100s of Bonaparte's remainand were studied closely while on the
beach by a few scopes.
The dog-free municipal beach was cleared repeatedly by off-leash dogs. When
not harassed by dogs, the gulls were

Yesterday afternoon i observed 2 adult Forster's Terns, and possibly 1 juvenile
associating with some Common Terns on the rocks off Kettle Point.
Also dropped through Grand Bend SL. Conditions there are excellent for
shorebirds, and highlights were 5 Stilt Sandpipers, 1 Long-billed Dowitcher,
At my favorite dirt patch off Ira Needles Blvd (north of Highland Rd), beside
Walmartthere is a large collection of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.
Amongst them is a beautiful adult (or near adult) Lesser Black-backed Gull.
Bird provided cracking views from 20ft, and was well photographed.
quiet spot. A few Mallards, a few Red-breasted
Mergansers, a few Herring gulls, and a few Bonaparte's gulls.

Visible in the middle of the development project bordering the Waterloo dump
were two suspected Juvenile Lesser black-backed gulls, late yesterday afternoon
(Oct 1). There were hundreds of gulls present in the dirt fields, with shallow
ponds and some manufactured ponds. Could be many more, i
of gulls is a work in progress.

To get to the lagoons take the 1st right at bottom of hill, warren st.,as your
coming into town on hwy 4. take this street out of town up hill take 1st right
scotch line, lagoons are just down the road.

a HUDSONIAN GODWIT observed from 2-2:45pm at Grand Bend Sewage Lagoons.
Habitat conditions were very good, and there was a large number and variety of
shorebirds present.

Yesterday at noon observed a young solitary purple martin perched with other
swallows. If you proceed straight down the path from the parking area, the bird
was located on a small peninsula to the left.
It was curious because this bird appears to have a plastic colour band on the
right

Bluewater Beach Road can be accessed off Highway 21 approximately two
kilometres south of Goderich. Go east approximately one kilometre and listen
for their distinctive

Despite continued snow, heard the first of season Killdeer return to area of
Fischer-Hallman and Bleams in Kitchener today. Shouldn't be long now until
Woodcocks are seen again!

Eligible CDN College University students can upgrade
. There are extensive mudflats extending between the bridge on 31st line
over to the bridge on 29th line. The Pelican appears to favour the western edge
of this area towards 29th line. The shorebirds move about and were seen both
east and west of 31st line bridge.

There are many other sparrows around the area (white-crowned, chipping,
savannah, song), but this appears to be the only bird singing consistently from
these spruce trees.

This morning at 7:30am observed what i believe to be a Clay-colored Sparrow off
Niska Rd. in Guelph (Google Maps identifies this dead end street as Sdrd 10).

I haven't seen any reports on the Ruff today, so i just thought i would confirm
it was still present this morning.
Observed the Ruff (male in breeding plumage) off Britannia Rd. on the floods
nearest 8th line at 6:20am with a couple of other early birders. The bird did
not remain near the
4:45pm this evening, spotted a Snowy Owl on a light standard on the south side
of Hwy 7, just west of Interchange Way - in what i believe is Vaughan. The bird
was mostly white with some light barring visible. Sorry for the late notice, my
email from blackberry appears to have been blocked.
Just a follow-up to yesterday's posting. I have confirmed based on the photos
with several individuals that it was indeed 2 Snow Geese and 5 Ross's Geese (2
adults, 3 juveniles) at Wildwood Resevoir on Sunday September 28th.
