[cayugabirds-l] Photos of snow geese at Savannah yesterday

2011-03-13 Thread mduttweiler
Forgetting a good camera yesterday guaranteed that we would find the snow geese
south of Rt. 31 in the fields near Savannah. The link below is to some low
quality phone shots at about 11:00 am. It was amazing. Read Meena's post from
yesterday for "audio."
https://picasaweb.google.com/mduttweiler/SnowGeese12Mar11?authkey=Gv1sRgCMnvxeyj46n_zwE&feat=email#
While we were at Savannah, there were a couple of dozen tundra swans on the
north side of the road.

Looking across from the Montezuma visitor center, there was an eagle on the
nest, two in the tree, and one soaring overhead. We also said hello to the
screech owl on factory pond. A stop on the way at Myers included a visit by a
very healthy looking mink on the south side of the point.

[cayugabirds-l] One more noting of yesterday NOGO

2011-03-13 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,
In Snow Geese frenzy, I forgot to mention hawks. Near north spring pool, I had
pulled off to look for a bird perched atop a tree, turned out to be Red-winged
Blackbird (I was hoping for a shrike :-)), but as I was about to return to the
car an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew across the pool towards north west.
I also so many RED-TAILS and many were settled as pairs! An immature BALD EAGLE
flew over on Carncrass road.

Back to MNWR today again, hope to get some blackbird flocks today!

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Saturday birds

2011-03-13 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi all,
My two sons (ages 8 and 11) and I went around Cayuga Lake Saturday, starting
after a mid morning music lesson.

Highlights were:

Excellent scope views of the Great Horned owls in Renwick Woods (Stewart Park,
Ithaca), a domestic-Canada goose hybrid and a domestic?-mallard mixed female
(the really light brown one reported from Stewart previously).

A Merlin flying and perching in the top of a spruce tree just north of Myers
Point.

"Screechie" at the Factory St. pond in Union Springs.

Snow geese as reported by others in the north parts of the Montezuma complex.
Throughout the day, my kids were trying to estimate and keep track of the
number of birds seen by species. With respect to the Snow Geese, my 8 year-old
said, "I don't know how many birds there were. My eyes know, but they can't
talk so I can't ask them."

On Center Rd. Ovid, among the hundreds of Canada Geese in a field right next to
the road was one of the coolest birds I have ever seen. It clearly was a
Canada-Snow goose hybrid. Seen from 20 yards with binoculars. Slightly
smaller than surrounding Canadas. Base plumage similar to Canada (i.e., black
head and neck with white chin strap, body more or less brownish gray [sort
of]). Bill shaped like a Snow Goose, complete with a grinning patch. I have
never seen one of those on a Canada before. Black of head and neck was flaked
with white feathers making it really stand out from the crowd. Body had
substantial number of white feathers mixed in with the typical brownish-gray
Canada-type feathers. When it flew a short distance with the rest of the flock
(they all picked up, flew in a really tight circle and landed back in the same
spot next to the road), its flight feathers looked like a typical Canada Goose.
All gray-brown. No noticeable white feathers or black ends to primaries.
Some day I'll actually buy a camera. I could have gotten a decent picture with
a cell phone. But I don't have one of those either. Did I mention that we
drive a horse and buggy (just kidding on that one).

Last highlight was that my 8 year-old really wanted to see a Loon as he had
never knowingly seen one. We got a decent scope view of one just north of
Sheldrake Point. Another cool bird in transitional plumage. Pretty far out,
but easily seen in the scope. At that distance, and with the transitional
plumage, the best thing I had to go on was bill structure to call it a Common
Loon (I have personally never seen the Pacific Loon in that area -- too
difficult to get up there often by horse and buggy :))

At the end of the day, both kids said that the day was even more fun than they
thought it would be. Not a bad way to spend my birthday.

[cayugabirds-l] ROSS'S GOOSE in field at corner of Game Farm Rd. and Rt. 366

2011-03-13 Thread Tim Lenz
Hi,

As I was driving up Game Farm Rd towards Rt. 366 this afternoon (~12:10PM) I
noticed about 125 Snow Geese in the field north of the pheasant pens on the
right side of the road. It didn't take much scoping through the flock
before I came across an adult ROSS'S GOOSE. It's pretty rare to see them on
the ground in Tompkins County (this is my first time) so I'd go for it if
you get a chance.

Game Farm and Compost Pile, Tompkins, US-NY
Mar 13, 2011 12:10 PM - 12:30 PM
 5 species

Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) 125
Ross's Goose (Chen rossii) 1 **Rare; adult. Very small white goose
with black wingtips, thick neck, and tiny dark-based pyramid-shaped bill.
Seemed more active and alert than many of the other Snow Geese. It was
walking around a lot and once even leapt into the air and flapped its wings.
I took some photos but the bird was a bit too far to capture well with my
lens.
Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) 300
Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) 12
House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) 8

[cayugabirds-l] More Ross's Geese, Dryden

2011-03-13 Thread Jay McGowan
Kevin and I just found at least two ROSS'S GEESE (certainly different birds
than the ones at Game Farm) in a large flock of Snow Geese on the north side
of Ferguson Road between Irish Settlement and Rt. 38. When I saw the flock
this morning there were about 1500 birds, but there aren't quite that many
now.

George Road is a little more open now, and I saw 8 Northern Pintail, 8
Green-winged Teal, American Wigeon, 3 Ring-necked Ducks, and a female
REDHEAD there just now.

[cayugabirds-l] about "Screechie"

2011-03-13 Thread Dave Nutter
Deb & all,The Eastern Screech-Owl(s) dubbed "Screechie" by Fritzie Blizzard of Union Springs is frequently seen in the Wood Duck box on the northeast side of the pond on Factory Street, close to the low branches of what I think is a willow and just north of the cattails.  Earlier this year I saw the immobile gray screech-owl face plugging the hole in that reddish box so regularly that I began to wonder if it was real and alive. Then more recently I saw the entrance empty, but I think someone reported it showing since then.  I think the owl is most likely to be showing on sunny days to gather heat, and on cold days to insulate the box from cold drafts.  If there's only one owl and it's incubating, it can't very well do that and cling to the entrance, but I think we may still be early for that.  --Dave NutterOn Mar 13, 2011, at 10:22 AM, "Deborah F. [cayugabirds-l] binocs found

2011-03-13 Thread Elaina McCartney
Did anyone leave some binocs on my property on the way down the stairs to the
dock? If so, contact me off-line. I noticed them this morning (spotted them
through my binoculars) and brought them up to the house. They could have been
left recently, or emerged out of the snow.

This morning before dawn I was awakened by a traffic pattern of what must have
been thousands of geese flying south to north (sounded like mostly Canadas) and
thousands of crows flying east to west. They obeyed the air traffic convention
of maintaining separate altitudes (the crows lower). Pretty quiet on the
surface of the lake north of Hog Hole today--a little while ago 5 active
Buffleheads (2 males), one Common Loon, and a Redhead that looks like it got
left behind. Three Turkey Vultures circled overhead earlier today. There seem
to be more Blue Jays than usual judging from their voices.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike

2011-03-13 Thread joe & Diana
Hi All,
I missed all the fun yesterday because of work so I thought I might find some
Snow Geese today. I saw mostly Canada Geese, Swans, and a lot of Pintails in
the mucklands. There was also Mallards and Widgeons. The light was pretty bad
and it was also raining. I did not see the Eagles at the lock. I really gave a
little time to try and see her head at the nest but did not. On Van Dyne Spoor
after a slippery ride in the mud and potholes, I was rewarded with a Northern
Shrike. I watched it hunt small rodents more or less dropping down on them. I
have a very blown up photo of it with its prey and one displaying its wing
patterns. No Snow Geese no matter how much I looked!

[cayugabirds-l] E Ithaca Rec Way Screech Owl

2011-03-13 Thread bob mcguire
Some of you may remember back a few years to when an Eastern Screech
owl inhabited a natural cavity along the East Ithaca Recreation Way,
not too far in from Game Farm Road. It seems to have been absent for
the past several years but tonight, as I was walking past the McDowell
Nut Grove, a gray morph EASCOW hung its head out of a nest box just
above the path and gave its tremolo call. I watched from about 30 feet
away for ten minutes. It never blinked, or called again. Hopefully it
is there for the season.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese Woes from others and other fun observations (long)

2011-03-13 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi All,

I went again to MWC as yesterday I was thinking my XLR cables as they were in
my backpack, but they weren't and I needed to record some calls. But what a
difference an 18 hours makes! It was windy and rainy, yesterday also it was
windy at least temps were better and birds were close by.
Today when I first passed Mucklands, no Snow Geese. Obviously which sane Snow
Goose wants be there when there are 6 hunters. I remember a few years ago, when
I went to Salton sea, there was field where some fake geese were in the field
and next it was SSNWR property and there hundreds of geese, mostly Ross's with
some Snow Geese. Snow geese knew which side of the line grass is green! So
probably today also they knew where to hang around. Therefore, I headed to
Carncrass Road. No Tundras there. I decided to go north a bit on Savannah
Spring Lake Road. On Howell Road I found a good sized flock of Snow Geese, may
be about 2-3000 just resting and milling around.

I somehow ended on Rt 38. I kind of remembered its existence but had forgotten
where it was coming from and where it was going. But I continued and found a
field or a kind of low level ground, could have been a frozen lake too, where I
found at least 6000-8000 Snow Geese. I spent an hour or more in the freezing
rain often I could hear myself cursing or trying to warm up while recording. A
Killdeer persistently flew over me several times calling loudly.

From here I took a left turn hoping to reach 89, so kept turning on variety of
roads and found some lovely habitats and roads, which I would love to explore
in summer and mostly it was around Duck Lake area. Finally, I ended back on the
same spot where I came across Snow Geese. Then I decided it was safer to take
Rt 38, which by now I had learnt goes to Port Byron. But on the way again I
came across Spring Lake road, I took that as I wanted to go back to Muckland.
But just made sure that I am heading in right direction by looking into my
tattered Delorme map.
On Rt 89, I ran into Lois Chaplin and her friend, she told me she had no luck
with Snow Geese. I reached Muckland, there were a few thousand Snow Geese on
far east side of the marsh.

So I spent some time watching Tundras on the west side of the road hoping by
then Snow Geese would return. One of the Tundra Swans slipped and fell three
times, I think it was walking on a thin ice! Others also occasionally fell, but
acted as if this was the spot they were going to try eat something. I think
their ego hurt in front of other Tundras. Also I found whenever a Tundra walked
to other groups of ducks or even Canada Geese, they simply moved away giving
wide birth to Snow Goose. I don't know if the Tundra asked others to move away
from them, I was little too far to hear. But enjoyed watching them and got some
of these behaviors on the video.

It was getting colder and freezing rain had started again, I decided I need to
go home eat something hot!.
But once I was on Rt 89, I decided to drive along the lake. Thousands of Athya
were in the open waters, especially the Canvasbacks and Widgeons. I spent
another 35-40 minutes at on spot, from a private parking lot that had no cars,
I watched and videoed some behaviors.

Canvasback males were courting females. Initially, I was wondering why there is
crowd in one location and other locations are equally spread out. Then I
learnt that single females were the attractions! I got series of footage of one
female being courted by 11 to 13 males. Two of them just came for fun for a few
minutes and left soon. But rest hung around her for long time. Often they would
flutter their wings and show off to females. Or would put back their head and
call. Often males chased neighboring males, sometimes chase was long enough to
make the male being chased duck into water. Sometimes the female seemed to be
annoyed by some of the males and she tried to chase them away by going after
them. But they persisted. Often one male was in the lead and female in second
lead and the whole caravan of 9 to 11 males followed her around. It was such
fun watching them and seeing on the video at home again! All the males looked
bright and good to me. I wonder how she is going to choose. I felt she was also
enjoying all the attention she was getting.

Further down along the lake, I came across 3 girls and 4 boys of Buffleheads.
They were also displaying. One pair seemed to be already kind of a pair. But
two girls and three boys were yet deciding I think. Males kept putting their
head back and fluttering their wings. One of them spotted me on the shore,
soon they took a flight!
I too thought I had enough of fun for today and headed home!

RE: [cayugabirds-l] about "Screechie"

2011-03-13 Thread Meena Haribal
As far as I know Screechies have been in Union Spring ponds for long time. One
on the main pond used to be in the box which was right in the middle of the
water, this was some 18 years ago but in one winter storm the box fell and
either some one put new boxes or there were already boxes along the road, so
one moved over to that spot.

I dont know about the Factory Pond woodduck box. But the screech owl has been
there for may be now more than 10 years.

The East Ithaca recreation way Screechie was also first noted some 15 years
ago. Mundy Wildflower Screechies have been there for more than 18 years too.
But seem to have moved locations to different trees. I don't know if it is the
same individuals in these boxes for last 18 years or same boxes are occupied by
new Screechies. I think for some the former may be the case.

Happy Screechie watching!

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] about "Screechie"

Deb & all,
The Eastern Screech-Owl(s) dubbed "Screechie" by Fritzie Blizzard of Union
Springs is frequently seen in the Wood Duck box on the northeast side of the
pond on Factory Street, close to the low branches of what I think is a willow
and just north of the cattails. Earlier this year I saw the immobile gray
screech-owl face plugging the hole in that reddish box so regularly that I
began to wonder if it was real and alive. Then more recently I saw the entrance
empty, but I think someone reported it showing since then. I think the owl is
most likely to be showing on sunny days to gather heat, and on cold days to
insulate the box from cold drafts. If there's only one owl and it's
incubating, it can't very well do that and cling to the entrance, but I think
we may still be early for that.

[cayugabirds-l] Mud Lock Bald Eagles ? Old Montezuma. Canandaigua Barrow's Goldeney

2011-03-13 Thread Michael and Joann Tetlow
On Friday we stopped by the Mud Lock Eagles nest and could not see any
head on the nest or an Eagle in any nearby trees. Hopefully it was just
sitting very low in the nest. Has anyone had better luck or have they
failed? We also have not seen any adults near the nest north of the Rtes 89
and 31 junctions. Our Montezuma observations Friday were about the same as
everyone has reported except for a total of 7 Rough-legged Hawks (4 over
Main Pool and May's Point and 3 in the Morgan/Carncross Road area). There
were a total of 15 Bald Eagles on the ice at Tschache Pool alone.

While I'm typing I might as well mention that there has been a male
Barrow's Goldeneye( previously reported by others on Genesee Birds) at Deep
Run Park on the east side of Canandaigua Lake which was still there today.
It was not easy to see as it was diving regularly and among a large raft of
commoner ducks but once located it gave great views. A lifer for 3 other
birders there with us. Mike and Joann Tetlow
