RE:[cayugabirds-l] bird food question - natural history
I want to thank Robert Wesley, Laurie Roe, Liz Brown, John Titus, Anne Clark, Stuart Krasnoff, and Melissa Luckow for informing me that the item the chickadee is carrying is a fruit of an agrimony, Agrimonia sp. in the Rosaceae. Also, sorry for the long url. Google is messing with our lives. [cayugabirds-l] Field birds
I spent some time early this afternoon wandering about 2 local mown hay fields. The grass is quite short (ave. 4-6 inches) in both. In the first, I flushed a bird that, as Sibley says, was only a glimpse of a small brown bird flying away. It was up for less than 2 seconds, travelled about 30, and showed no pattern to my naked eye. The flight path, however, was distinctive. It reminded me much of the flight of a flushed snipe (i.e. zigzaggy). I searched the area for ½ hour, but could not refind it. In the second field, I flushed a dense flock of E. MEADOWLARKS. They resettled quickly, and I was sure I could refind them, which I did, and counted 35 birds. [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods at noon
Sorry for the late post... I walked on trails on both sides of the road at Sapsucker Woods from 12:15 to 1:00 today. There was a group of WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS near the north feeders, and there were lots of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS in several locations. On the east side of the road near the pond behind the 'frog' barn, a kinglet flock included a BLUE-HEADED VIREO. It was in the shrubbery at the side of the trail about 2 feet in front of me, and it sat there for a minute, letting me admire him without binoculars. In this stretch of trail there was also a HERMIT THRUSH. There was a group of DARK-EYED JUNCOS and lots of activity in the powerline cut, but by then I was running late and couldn't explore the area more carefully. At home in Caroline we have had a dramatic increase in our DARK-EYED JUNCO numbers the past week or so. Re: [cayugabirds-l] CayugaRBA going bye bye ?
Dave, if 50 birders put up $5 each could oneidarba and cayugarba share one textmark account? I think if mentioned at meetings there would be enough interest to keep an alert system going. (By the way, would someone who has had my problem of not receiving these texts, but being able to generate them have that problem resolved?) Just thinking out loud. Re: [cayugabirds-l] CayugaRBA going bye bye ?
All: I hear from Jay that textmarks has in fact terminated the free service so we need to set up an alternative for CayugaRBA. I propose that the Cayuga Bird Club takes on the responsibility of setting this up and maintaining it for the long term. I understand there are free alternatives, at least for the present, so we would pursue one of these. If at some point in the future, no free service is available, the club would have to discuss and come to an agreement whether we would pay for it. I am the Webmaster and now the President of the club, so making this happen would mainly fall to me. I will of course share anything I learn with Oneida birders. Re: [cayugabirds-l] CayugaRBA going bye bye ?
This text messaging is the reason why I saw GYRFALCON...AMERICAN AVOCET... AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN...HUDSONIAN GODWITS...TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and many others. I know it gets posted to this email list too...but the rapid nature of the text messages has hit me when I am in the field and at times not far from where the rare bird is being seen. hate to see it go...even though I am not in the local area up there. [cayugabirds-l] New rare bird text alert
So it would seem TextMarks followed through on their threats, so I have set up a new RBA system using the application GroupMe. It should work in a similar way, except no keywords are necessary. For those of us with smartphones, installing the GroupMe app is recommended for easiest viewing of the content. For those without, you will just receive SMS text messages as usual. When you join or are added, you will receive a text from a number. Save this number, as it will be the number you text reply to in order to post. Be aware that every time someone joins the list, everyone will receive a message, which is annoying, especially for those with limited text message plans. If this is you, you may want to wait for a few days until the joining frenzy (if that comes to pass) has subsided. If I find an easy way to share the group I will let people know, but until then just reply privately to me with your cell # and I will add you. Just as a reminder, and for anyone who would like to join this group who wasn't on the last one, this is for rare or particularly unusual birds only. New spring arrivals and expected birds should not be posted on this group, and this group is not meant to replace Cayugabirds and everything should be cross-posted. Like Cayugabirds, this group covers the Cayuga Lake Basin and nearby. -Jay -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
