At the suggestion of some bird club members I am drafting a resolution to bring
before the Cayuga Bird Club meeting tomorrow night asking the City of Ithaca
to halt its plans to ban feeding waterfowl, to haze geese on City land and
water, and to disrupt nesting. Reasons are several and may incl
it’s worth a
bit of care to observe wildlife. After all, a skunk is a lot prettier walking
away than smeared on the wheels and undercarriage. And a Turkey Vulture is
magnificent in flight and a service to everyone on the ground, but not what you
want coming through the windshield.

The Bald Eagle nest off NYS-89 along the west shore of Cayuga Lake in the Town
of Ulysses is technically possible to see, but it’s obscured by vegetation. The
most satisfying time to watch is when the young are big and standing up or even

Trail appears
to be close to or on the divide where it crosses Searsburg Rd. So, most of
those fields are in the Cayuga Lake Basin along both sides of Potomac, but the
western extreme along Searsburg is out.

base. The eye was yellow. I suspect this bird is a hybrid, probably with
Redhead. Jay did not refind it during his brief scan.

Come to think of it, I saw an adult Bald Eagle later Sunday afternoon on the
dead tree in the lake near the white lighthouse. That could explain the dead
goose and perhaps the relative paucity of birds on the ice.
