The remarkably noisy young Ravens in the spruces just across the road from my house have gotten out of their nest tree and are moving around quite a bit in the plantation. Also yesterday PM, a pair of croaking Ravens treated me to a fun flight display over the front yard. & this morning ‘my’ usual 3 A. A Raven pair is pretty evident lately around the traditional nesting area in the hemlocks on the steep northern slope of 1,920’ “Sorry Hunter Hill” (not so named on any maps), West Danby. The resident ravens around my Lodi farm have been much more vocal lately, but I haven't seen any large groups moving through. Two days ago, while harvesting rampant tomatillos from my compost pile, I saw a single raven giving chase to a leucistic red-tail, with three crows mobbing close behind and two other ravens in tumble-play flight. [cayugabirds-l] Ravens and the new mown hay
Today, as the June mowing of the last few days was smelling good, but causing confusion among the previously nesting Red-winged Blackbirds and Bobolinks, a group of Ravens parked themselves on fields next to my house. I suspect this is the same group as flew through earlier in the week—there were 6 then and there were at least 4 today. They foraged on a field mostly out of sight through brushy trees and spent the whole day whooping, quonking and making noises that turned out to be fledglings demanding what adults were finding. Definitely fledglings involved, as they occasionally landed and vocalized high enough in the trees that I could see them well at the edge of the field and our scrubby land. The landings entailed a great deal of flapping and some sudden vocalizations as the branch did not hold. I got a few sightings of flying ravens with relatively small heads, in the stretching, trying-to-fly-faster posture of young corvids. I got a few other views, including one of an adult carrying a whole,small rodent low across the field back toward where the fledglings seemed to be perched. The vocalizations from the waiting birds crescendoed and everyone followed the bird with the food along the tree line, so I had glimpses and some good views of 4 or more. They seemed to ignore one of the local pair of Redtail Hawks as it also soared back and forth over the fields, being attacked by Redwinged Blackbirds. Anyway the picnic on the hayfield lasted noisily all day until about 7 pm. Now they have disappeared, I think off to the South and back into the Basin, which might be Hammond Hill area or closer to 13. Wish they had been more visible. [cayugabirds-l] Ravens getting ready!
Hi all, Yesterday I hiked about 4 mile loop of Bob Cameroon loop in the afternoon with Cayuga Trails Club. Only bird on the hike was one Chickadee. Of course I do not spish or use playbacks. As we were leaving Tower station on Tower road there was a crisp shiny Raven circling and calling. Today I hiked Sweedler Preserve of Lick Brook with another group, we encountered the same pair of Ravens flying back and forth several times over our head often calling. This pair has nested in the ledges near the fall. This time also they seemed to be preparing for nesting in the same area. Other birds of interest were a couple of Downy, several Chickadees, a Red-belied and a pair of Golden-crowned Kinglets. I returned via King Road. On King Road just past the junction of Sand Banks road there was a pair of ravens on a electrical pole. One of them was shining and gorgeous looking and I think it was he as he was doing a some kind of display with head movements. So it was ravenous week-end! Hi all For this past week we have been seeing up to four ravens at a time flying over our house on Hunt Hill Road, Dryden. This morning there has been one adult flying back-and-forth and the sounds of a fledgling in the distance over the trees. [cayugabirds-l] Ravens - group courtship behavior
After the snow stopped this afternoon, I set up my scope to do a little driveway birding. I noticed some dark specks over Buffalo Hill; these showed to be 3 pairs of RAVENS, each pair flying wingtip-to-wingtip as mated pairs often do during courtship. All 3 pairs were in a kettle, circling about each other, no more than 30-40 feet apart. One of the pairs seemed less closely attached than the other two, and would separate for some distance before coming back together. I was wondering to myself if they ever got mixed up, when, twice, I observed two pairs come very close and actually exchange partners for around 5 seconds or so (each new "couple" flying wingtip-to-wingtip) before breaking apart and returning to their original situation. All this lasted for 10 minutes before 2 of the pairs floated elsewhere. Yardbird ravens--first ever. Out hanging laundry, listening to the squeaking of the chickadees and missing my Field Sparrow. Heard an odd fwup-fwup overhead and receding, thought "odd crows" and then they "cronked" repeatedly, so gone was any confusion. So how many ravens are there in this area? Gary Kohlenberg also wrote he sees ravens regularly. I have been seeing them mostly near Honness and East Hill area, though we saw one on the junction of Pine Tree and 79 this Friday morning from the bus. Any ideas how large would their territory be? also do they split brood? I have been seeing only one adult two young. Of course I can find out from the internet, just being lazy. Ravens seem to continue in the yard and neighboring area. A neighboring squirrel died in a car accident and the ravens are waiting for the meal. Because the squirrel was in the middle of the road, I moved it into my neighbors yard, (no one lives there it is some cult group property). I waited for ravens to return to take some video. But they saw me and refused to be there anywhere near. I hid behind trees, when American Crows discovered the squirrel. I did not want the squirrel to be their dinner (sorry Anne) so moved out of the tree Am. Crows vanished. Before they did so I got a nice recording of American Crows squabbling as there were no cars for a few seconds. Almost around that time the raven family circled and one parent flew right over my head belching out a loud craww that I could record and luckily no cars at that time. Right now the ravens flew over to Strawberry circle and that is somewhere they seem have nested in Northeast direction. It was great to watch them! I have been surprised to see a Common Raven a couple times this spring along major roads between Ovid and Seneca Falls, which I hadn't figured on being their habitat, (but neither did I think Pine Tree Road in Ithaca was). I also saw a possible Northern Goshawk thereabouts, but perhaps it was migrating. I think May 17th is an early but possible date for Raven fledglings. If you're around the area frequently, their loud begging calls should give them away. In fact they get pretty darned loud even before they leave the nest. I have them regularly over the yard, Slaterville/Burns Rd., and am sure they're nesting close by. The local crows never miss a chance to gang up on them this time of year. Our Ravens have been absent all winter. It is well into the courtship and nesting season for them, so we had just about given up on having them as neighbors this year. They mate for life, so we were ready to assume one of our resident pair had perished and the other had dispersed. That changed yesterday. While we were outside we heard that familiar "gronk" and saw two Ravens approaching from the east, just double tree-top level. They were flying very close together, wingtips almost touching. We ran to an opening to catch them in in the act of courtship display. What a sky dance! They swooped and swirled, looped and dooped, zigged and zagged, gronking mightily. It was jaw-dropping! To our surprise, another pair appeared from over our shoulders, again from the east, and headed straight for the first pair. These two dove right into the first pair and the sky suddenly became a swirling mix of big black birds, with sounds like bells ringing, metal clanking, frogs croaking, gronks, clunks and raspy caws. Jaws fell further. Finally, they split up, one pair continuing west, the other turning around and going back east. Gosh, but that was fun! So glad we were outside at that time!!! Very cool observations. The preening of each other, called "allopreening," occurs in crows and ravens, but not jays. The fact that it was forceful suggests to me that the birds involved were a parent and a juvenile, not the pair. For a similarly forceful allopreening interaction among crows, take a look at the photo and video I have at https://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/CrowBehavior. Just to clarify a point, Common Ravens have light gray, not white bases to their neck and body feathers (the same as American Crows). Chihuahuan Ravens have truly white feather bases, which were the source of the older name, White-necked Raven. Pretty much all birds have uncolored bases to their body feathers, but usually when you see them they appear dark (like the "spot" on a Savannah Sparrow's chest), not light as in crows. It was the local RAVEN family which we haven't seen for 2 months. One preened the head of the other for 5-10 minutes. At one point, Susie saw the preener pull the head feathers of the preenee roughly forward so far as to expose a large white area. The white we thought was skin, but research indicated it to be the white bases of the black feathers. I looked out our front windows a bit ago and saw 4 large, dark birds milling close together in the driveway of the Brooktondale firehall. It was raining pretty hard, and I thought at first they were the local crow family. Two of them wandered off across the lawn picking at probably snails or bugs; the other two engaged in preening, which I thought a little odd for crows, so the scope was hauled out. It was the local RAVEN family which we haven't seen for 2 months. One preened the head of the other for 5-10 minutes. At one point, Susie saw the preener pull the head feathers of the preenee roughly forward so far as to expose a large white area. The white we thought was skin, but research indicated it to be the white bases of the black feathers. On my way to the bus stop in Eastern Heights this morning I heard the croaking, then saw a RAVEN cruising south. A minute later another one came by with 2 crows in pursuit. Also, heard WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS everywhere, including seeing 5 right under my feeder, which was a first. [cayugabirds-l] Ravens again
I spent some time after lunch today in the field across from our house, watching to see what might go by. At 1330, I noted two dark birds flying side-by-side, about 3 feet apart, emerging from over the trees to the east. They continued in this fashion straight to the west and out of sight, about ½ mile total distance. They were moving extremely rapidly, even for RAVENS. The only time I can remember seeing a raven fly with such abandon was one I saw being chased by a bald eagle, several years ago. There were no acrobatics involved, but I consider this to be pair bonding/courtship behavior. It sure looked like fun; maybe Ill see if Susie will run full tilt with me across the field tomorrow. I was in an area of tall trees in Shindagin Hollow this morning when I heard several "gronks". I eventually located 2 RAVENS, high, right overhead. They were flying side-by-side when they simultaneously folded wings and dropped for about 1 sec. They almost appeared as one bird. They repeated this 2x until I lost them thru the trees. They were silent except for the initial "gronk". I waited around, but they did not return, although the trees limited my viewing area. For the second time in a month, I have seen crows chasing Ravens near my house. They seem to be drifting south from Summerhill. I live in farm country, not the deep woods. An interesting development! We live just about halfway between Taughannock Creek and Trumansburg (or Frontenac) Creek. Ravens sometimes fly back and forth between the creeks. Today seemed to be one of those days. While I was pruning our apple tree, I could hear (but not see) one or two Ravens calling to the south of us in the direction of the corn fields. I also could hear a number of crows, but their calls did not seem to be a reaction the to Ravens. Gold finches are still coming to the niger tube but not in the numbers of a few weeks ago. We were getting numbers in the 20s and 30s but now there are a half dozen or so. Traffic is so low I took down the second feeder tube a few days ago. The tubes are the long ones with about 20 perches. They were great with the Redpolls last winter but we have zero Redpolls this winter. Some of you are familiar with the two poles in my field. You can see them from Rte 89. I put them up as hawk perches. Only one remains. The other came down in a storm, but it will be replaced because they really work. We often have redtails using one or both. The perches also appeal to other birds. Over the course of a year, there may be bluebirds, crows, redwing blackbirds, mockingbirds, robins, tree swallows, and house sparrows. One time there was a kestrel and another time, a N. shrike. The posts are white ash saplings about 14 feet high. I try to find one with a fork near the top. I screw on a horizontal perch across the fork. The posts are sunk about 2 feet into the ground. Three feet would be better but bedrock is only a foot or two below the surface. Don't forget the Great Backyard Bird Count next weekend. Happy Birding. Thanks to Marie's posting, I could easily find the Ravens up on Mt. Pleasant this morning.It was a nice comparison to the nearby crows. I stopped to walk my dogs near the Taughanock falls overlook around 4 today and was thrilled to see a pair of Common Ravens flying back and forth over the gorge as they shouted out. The frigid gray sky was a perfect backdrop for their drama.
