Forgetting a good camera yesterday guaranteed that we would find the snow geese
south of Rt. 31 in the fields near Savannah. The link below is to some low
quality phone shots at about 11:00 am. It was amazing. Read Meena's post from
yesterday for "audio."

Hi all,
In Snow Geese frenzy, I forgot to mention hawks. Near north spring pool, I had
pulled off to look for a bird perched atop a tree, turned out to be Red-winged
Blackbird (I was hoping for a shrike :-)), but as I was about to return to the
car an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew across the pool

Is the screech owl in the gox in the middle of the pond on Factory St in
Union Springs? I've gone there several times and not seen the owl. Maybe I
am looking in the wrong place. Thanks, Deborah Lynn

Hi,
As I was driving up Game Farm Rd towards Rt. 366 this afternoon (~12:10PM) I
noticed about 125 Snow Geese in the field north of the pheasant pens on the
right side of the road. It didn't take much scoping through the flock
before I came across an adult ROSS'S GOOSE. It's pretty rare to see t
We just passed the FLLT heron rookery on Irish Settlement Rd. and noted a
single GREAT BLUE HERON standing in each of three of the nests there. Do
the same herons use the same nests year after year, or is it
first-come-first-served? Nests were unoccupied yesterday.

I eventually picked out at least 3 different ROSS'S GEESE with just over 600
Snow Geese in the Game Farm field, but a few minutes ago most of them took
off towards the lake and I don't see any Ross's amongst the 150 remaining
Snows.

Kevin and I just found at least two ROSS'S GEESE (certainly different birds
than the ones at Game Farm) in a large flock of Snow Geese on the north side
of Ferguson Road between Irish Settlement and Rt. 38. When I saw the flock
this morning there were about 1500 birds, but there aren't quite that m

Would this be a Tompkins County record number of Ross's Geese ?

Well, sure enough, I heard SNOW GEESE over my house around 3:15, and went out
to see several hundred passing low overhead from the southeast (roughly Game
Farm area) -- one line of geese had two very small ROSS'S GOOSE-looking
individuals. Very cool! Several "v"s of CANADA GEESE coming over as w
Deb & all,The Eastern Screech-Owl(s) dubbed "Screechie" by Fritzie Blizzard of Union Springs is frequently seen in the Wood Duck box on the northeast side of the pond on Factory Street, close to the low branches of what I think is a willow and just north of the cattails. Earlier this year I saw th
Did anyone leave some binocs on my property on the way down the stairs to the
dock? If so, contact me off-line. I noticed them this morning (spotted them
through my binoculars) and brought them up to the house. They could have been
left recently, or emerged out of the snow.

Hi All,
I missed all the fun yesterday because of work so I thought I might find some
Snow Geese today. I saw mostly Canada Geese, Swans, and a lot of Pintails in
the mucklands. There was also Mallards and Widgeons. The light was pretty bad
and it was also raining. I did not see the Eagles at
Some of you may remember back a few years to when an Eastern Screech
owl inhabited a natural cavity along the East Ithaca Recreation Way,
not too far in from Game Farm Road. It seems to have been absent for
the past several years but tonight, as I was walking past the McDowell
Nut Grove, a
Hi All,
I went again to MWC as yesterday I was thinking my XLR cables as they were in
my backpack, but they weren't and I needed to record some calls. But what a
difference an 18 hours makes! It was windy and rainy, yesterday also it was
windy at least temps were better and birds were close by.
As far as I know Screechies have been in Union Spring ponds for long time. One
on the main pond used to be in the box which was right in the middle of the
water, this was some 18 years ago but in one winter storm the box fell and
either some one put new boxes or there were already boxes along th
On Friday we stopped by the Mud Lock Eagles nest and could not see any
head on the nest or an Eagle in any nearby trees. Hopefully it was just
sitting very low in the nest. Has anyone had better luck or have they
failed? We also have not seen any adults near the nest north of the Rtes 89
and
I saw them a little over a week ago - 1 in nest, 1 in tree.
