Bob,

Yes, you are correct. Internet connectivity is the limiting factor in a
system like this. The Cerbo that I recommend does lots more than monitor
your bilge so there are other reasons to use such a device. For any kind of
remote monitoring, you'll be tethered to an internet connection.

I keep my last gen iPad on the boat with only a 
few apps, other than Navionics and all my sailing 
related stuff.  It shows up on the network as 
"Alera's iPad"  That way we have several charts 
running at the same time. One at the helm and then other anywhere else we want.


I can add it to my plan for an extras $10 a month.

The Novatel MiFi does not restart when the power comes up. You need to press 
the button on it. If you want a reliable Cellular hotspot that can be started 
by powering up the power supply, a Sierra Wireless AirCard (763) will work. It 
can also operate without the battery, so it is up only when you supply external 
power.

I have seen one for $10 (CAD) on eBay.

A SIM card will cost you around $10-$15 and the data only plan should not be 
that bad.

One of the simple solutions for rebooting the router or a modem is a mechanical 
timer/switch. Have it set up for a single on/off cycle somewhere during the 
night. If you are away and there is a power outage, the timing will drift, but 
it should not bother you (since you are away).

Just add a cellphone to your plan and fire it up as a hotspot?  Leave it on the

She says we have an unused line on our plan.  Huh?  I have a spare iPhone in my 
desk.  Hmm.

Ah.  Timely twist on this thread.

The Admiral and I were in Colorado a couple weeks ago when the cold weather
hit Louisiana.  We didn't lose power but we lost the internet.  All our
connected devices were down.  We couldn't see our doorbell or security
cameras.  Our alarm monitoring service couldn't communicate with our alarm
panel.  Gosh, we couldn't run the robot vacuum and scare the crap out of
the cat.

The internet returned.  We verified it with our neighbor who was on the
same service.  HOWEVER, our modem and router did not re-establish
communication.  I could reset our modem remotely but I had no way to reboot
the router remotely.  Had we been at home, we could have simply powered
down/up each device and fixed the problem.  We asked our cat sitter to do
it but apparently she didn't do it correctly.  The Admiral fixed it 5
minutes after she got home.

I did some research.  I found a slick, cheap solution: a Zobox Router
Rebooter.

Neat piece of equipment.  You install it in the power line to your WiFi
router.  Once set up, it apparently pings some reliable websites via your
WiFi network.  If it sees a fail on 3 or 4 of them, it assumes your WiFi is
down and does a reboot of your router.

Now I can reboot my modem remotely via phone or the ISP's website.  When
the modem drops offline and is restarting, the Zobox sees the internet is
down and reboots the WiFi router.  When the two units come back online,
they are talking.  WiFi is re-established and all our connected devices are
now visible.  Slick.  It works.  I tried it several times.  Each time it
worked as advertised.

Sitting in the slip... My wifi is connected often enough.  I see it as
being similar to many of the smart devices in our homes.  I can control my
grill and my Christmas lights anywhere in the world and I currently monitor
my freezer temp remotely.  If I lose wifi momentarily or for hours on end
it doesn't matter.  Once a wifi signal is running again everything picks
right up where it left off.  Sure I'm SOL during the outage but sitting in
the slip or on the hard my wifi is sufficient.  If it isn't a wifi Hotspot
or cell phone plan isn't very prohibitive.

Len, I'm installing a Victron Cerbo GX. It can do everything you're asking
and will transmit data remotely to the Victron VRM app/website. It needs an
internet connection. Either wifi or hardwired. Victron also sells a GSM
device with a SIM card (~$12/month) if you don't want to rely on marina
wifi.

It can do a lot. Just depends on how fancy you want to get. You can email
me if you have more questions.

You can also build your own with a raspberry pi and the open-source Venus
OS from Victron. It's the same software they use on the Cerbo but you'll
have to be pretty software savvy to make it do everything you want. Here is

On my boat, the water has to rise about 3/4" to trigger the float and it runs 
for a few minutes when it does.  That's a considerable amount of water under 
there.  I'd chase down the leak.  How long does the pump run each time?  If 
it's a short run, the problem may be water in the discharge hose seeping back 
into the bilge.  I'd wet vac the bilge dry and look for water trickling down 
the hull toward the pump, and follow that back to the source.

With all this talk about bilge pumps I am looking at a way to monitor the boat when I am not there. Has anyone bought or built a monitor? It looks possible with a Raspberry Pi computer. I would like to monitor battery bank voltage, bilge pump cycles or bilge water level and refrigerator temperature. You could go farther and monitor tank levels or install a cctv camera too. I am interested in any experience on this. I was going to say that. My boat would have to sit for a month or two to fill 
the bilges, depending on how much rain we got. Actually it would take a LOT of
