Stus-List Water heater mystery

2017-05-02 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Danny, not sure I would test that high a pressure. The coolant pressure won't
be as high as your domestic water pressure. You could pressurize the tank with
fresh water and test the bypass loop by opening the loop caps if they are
capped. If the loop leaks it can be easily repaired. But that doesn't deal with
the original issue of a tripping breaker! Perhaps the element is burned or
shorted. Maybe the tank is leaking on the thermostat? Lots of things to look
at. Good luck, Len

Stus-List Sealing fixed port lights 37/40+

2017-03-28 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Hi Bruce,
I had the thin bow end of the fixed light snap or crack vertically while away
from the dock on vacation. It leaked when it rained and that was when I
actually noticed the crack. I was able to use a thick layer of clear silicone
to temporarily stop the leak. I used tape on each side of the crack to provide
a clean edge while applying the silicone. It worked but it's temporary. You may
get 18 months out of it but if it started to crack it will continue and you may
have to completely remove the old silicone and reapply. I am redoing my fixed
ports this summer. (The south sunny side of the boat cracked first!) Good luck,

Stus-List Water tank inspection ports

2017-02-12 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
I was able to source new tank inspection ports in Toronto at Holland Marine
Products. (HMP) holland marine.com The amount of original and replacement C
parts Peter has in stock is impressive. There is an online catalogue. If you
have changed the O rings and just want to caulk the cap, silicone will not seal
to the plastic tank but I have had good luck in with butyl tape rolled like
caulk on my holding tank. Not sure if it would contaminate fresh water tanks or
not! As a side note HMP does plastic welding for new fitting relocation or
repairs too and no I don't work there, he has solved a few boat problems for me
over the years.

Bruce, Nice boat! Good luck with the finalization of your purchase. Your

any format file and large enough to hold pictures, video and music. I can take
it anywhere and use HDMI or RCA cord. It may even use WIFI. I don't know if
they are making a SSD drive but solid state will be faster to load and more
robust on a boat.

Edd, Change your dilithium crystals!
But seriously, lots of good advice, I would also consider a good quality multi
meter that you can trust for accurate voltage. I have an Ideal digital multi
meter that also measures AC & DC amps that you clamp on a single wire. It
wasn't expensive and I use it everywhere. I guess I don't trust all the gadgets
we have on board and some of the old equipment is non digital. You can use it
for continuity and other diagnostics. Nigel Calder's book on marine electrical

hammer and vice grips run a close second!

Stus-List Nova kool

2016-10-04 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Tom, As long as you didn't defrost with a sharp knife and the compressor fan is
clean it should run well (unless the board is fried). Mine had a leak and it
only takes about 1.1 ounces to refill and it's easily over filled so best to
vacuum out and weigh the new charge in. Like Josh says check wiring too. I was
able to refill mine and install a new computer fan to get a couple more years
out of it but replaced it with a new unit this summer. The new unit is modern
refrigerant and has an adjustable output. It uses less power too. The old one
was 1990s vintage and used R12 which isn't environmentally friendly. If you can
send it to nova kool for a cheap rebuild, it may last longer than fixing it
yourself but you can't keep bending the copper tubing. If your compressor is
located where mine is under the aft cabin wet locker, you need to lose the heat
and cold beer is important! IMHO installing a new unit is 10x the cost of
repairing the old one but well worth it. Ask yourself what you w
ould do if it was in your own kitchen at home. It doesn't owe you anything by
now and you can't buy parts for that vintage any longer. I think it was 1100$
CDN so what's that $15 USD? Lol.

Stus-List Possible upgrade to a C 36.

2016-08-26 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Ryan, The 81 36KCB is a great boat. I had one for 10 years. It's about 4 foot 2
inch draft despite what the C brochure said. Sails well with board up if
necessary. You will need to seal the cast iron board specially in salt water, I
would get a bigger wheel (42) and install spinnaker winches. It sailed well and
would go anywhere. I've sailed a 29 and a 30-1 both great boats but they lack
interior space the 36 has. You will find it a lot stiffer than the 30. That's a
great price if it's in good condition. You would sail past a lot of new 36 and
bigger boats if racing. The older C will last forever if kept well. 36KCB
would make a great boat for the Bahamas too!

Stus-List Bulkhead repair

If the rot is a small area you may be able to use a product like Git Rot to
deeply penetrate the plywood but then you have to epoxy the outside near the

bulkhead and replace it. I have never seen more than a two inch wide rot area.
Is it worse than that? I have had success repairing a small area at the bottom

Stus-List Boom Fittings

Josh, My 1989 37+ has two ropes that go through the boom and to the coach roof
led aft to the winches and a rams horn hook on the front of the boom. The two
ropes go to each reef point on the leech and I use a line stopper knot (figure
of eight) to secure. I let off halyard tension, hook the Rams horn to the
appropriate reef point and tighten the appropriate reef rope. Then re-tension
the halyard and we are done. The sail has a nice shape like a footless main and
no need to wrap the freshly painted boom or fuss with the stack pack. Check to
see if your boom has the extra sheaves. Len

Stus-List Diesel heaters

2016-02-07 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Steve, I didn't read back too far, did you look at a propane bulkhead
heater/fireplace? Been sailing GB forever with no special heater. I
infrequently use a small electric ceramic cube heater at the dock with shore
power spring and fall but I don't have a bird on board to worry about. Consider
mosquito and black fly screen in May/June! It's only a degree or two colder
than Toronto but the bugs are fierce.

Stus-List Diesel heaters

2016-02-07 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Steve, I had a 1981 36 and the propane system was installed under the rear
cockpit seating. Believe it was an 8 or 10 lb bottle but you could also use 5
lb. The fibre glass seat cover piano hinged up to a cylindrical container that
was vented out the bottom above the water line with a regulator and a solenoid
valve. Buy a 25 foot propane hose, power a solenoid with a switch and you are
in business. Pretty easy to install or have one installed if you build the
propane locker which is also easy. Many were there from the factory, check out
early 80s vintage C with propane. At one time West marine had the hardware
regulator/gauge/solenoid.

You may like diesel for other reasons but you don't have to rule out propane.
It's an option. And yes diesel is safer than propane on a boat but not cleaner.

Stus-List Winterizing raw water intake

2015-09-28 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Edd, I take the intake hose off and stuff a smaller hose in a couple inches and
re-clamp it. Use electrical tape to make the outside diameter fit whatever
small hose you have and pull antifreeze remotely. The less permanent
connections to sea water the better for less leak potential. I use a 2 or 3
foot piece of beverage hose and place a large antifreeze container on the
floor. Takes 10 seconds to rig and works every time. Factor the small size of
the opening in the antifreeze jug with whatever hose size you end up
installing. My 2 cents: keep it simple. Save your money for racing sails.

Stus-List C trademark stripe

2015-09-22 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Thanks all. Tape it is! I will try Holland Marine at Ken's suggestion. I am an
hour north of his store and Peter will even mail it. I should have looked there
to start with, he has a surprising C OEM inventory. A couple of years ago I
was able to source an original holding tank and that's not the only part he
surprised me with.

The paint in my recessed stripes and stars is fading and peeling. Anyone have
success with tape? How long tape will it last in the sun? Where did you get the
tape?

Stus-List Mast step 1985 37

2015-09-11 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Mike, I don't have the rake specifications for a 1985 37 but it should probably
be 8-10 inches to aft measured by hanging a weight from the main halyard. A
wrench will do. Then install your wedges at the collar/blocks at the base and
tune the mast. The mast will move around to match your adjustment if it's
loose. I have the original instructions for a 1981 36 and a 1989 37+ if
necessary but you will likely find them online on the photo album site. If I
were you and had 10 miles to go with questionable fuel, borrow an inflatable
(with good fuel) for the trip with about 10hp and guarantee you get there! You
can cleat it or harness it to the transom and easily push your boat.

Stus-List Water tank x connect

2015-09-10 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Josh, It may have been the PO's DIY winterizing solution. Our PO had a
complicated hose system where he pumped air into the head sink faucet to bleed
the 3 tank water system and piping.
Just a guess!

Stus-List Fuel contamination

2015-09-06 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
It just occurred to me that no one replied with a DIY fuel cleaning method. Has
anyone built their own polisher? I have considered a two filter system with a
bypass polisher but haven't had any issues and I don't use much fuel either.

It isn't complicated in theory.

Stus-List Universal panel wiring

2015-08-11 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
For what it's worth and if you like to read, www.c34.org (Catalina 34 owners
forum) has some good information on universal Diesel engines wiring. It isn't
all appropriate to our CCs but worth a look. Some common problems. Some wiring
diagrams. Cheers,

Stus-List 37+ prop and boat speed

Ron, This thread is interesting in that most of you are in salt water, I am in
fresh. I have the universal M35 with a 2 blade max prop and at 2500 RPMs I get
6.8 knots (GPS) with VC17 bottom paint. The max prop is adjustable and there
are lots of other variables. Cheers,

Stus-List Emergency tiller squeeking

2015-06-18 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Robert, If the 3 in 1 oil you used stops working, try spray silicone. It's
supposed to be the best lube for Delrin plastic. It's the same material as the
ball bearings in roller furlings and WD40 or silicone spray work best there
too. If it's a long term problem I would get a new bearing machined. It can't
be that expensive and others have replaced theirs. It would drive me nuts
listening to a squeek in a quiet anchorage as the rudder moves with waves.

Stus-List CC 30-1

2015-06-07 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Jay, I am 6 feet tall 215# and have been up to the top of a 30-1. No problem. I
use a climbing harness rather than a bosun's chair. Same price if you don't own
either, but the harness is 10x more comfortable and has no cotton or canvas to
get wet and rot. Bowline or double figure of 8 knot and a safety line
(halyard). Use a messenger line to a bucket for tools and don't forget a
camera, it's a beautiful perspective (straight down). They say it's the sudden
stop you have to worry about not the distance you fall, make sure you have
competence on the winch(s). Have fun!

Stus-List Potable water fittings.

2015-05-28 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Josh, The valve on our 37+ was made by Gardenia and its a 4-1 if that helps. (I
converted the port side fresh water tank to a holding tank for the Great Lakes,
we have lots of room with two holding tanks.)
Tom, it hasn't been said yet, and you probably already know but there is a
Quest compression fitting end that goes on the plastic pipe with a SS ring and
you can tighten the nut down pretty tight! The nut squeaks all the way tight
and will take quite a bit of abuse. The plumbing is not in the sunlight and
will last decades. If I was going to change it up and had a pile of spare cash
to burn, I would go Pex too. They can use a two wrench snug but not very often.
RVs have been using it forever too.

Dave, if you try to round out the fittings, I believe it's called a swagging

Harbour Freight or whatever that tool chain store is called will have one.
Good luck.
