Today, Sean Walters and I birded Yuma County (with a quick couple stops in
Phillips and a visit to Red Lion SWA in Logan.) We had a resplendent 131 species
Topping the list was a male SCARLET TANAGER in the town of Laird. Next best was
a female SUMMER TANAGER at the Wray Fish
Was hopping
I spent the first 3 or so hours of the day wandering around Crow, part of which
was spent in the company of Sue Riffe. Highlights included

Yesterday, I started at Cottonwood Canyon. At the campground (2nd, as there
really are two), there was a calling SUMMER TANAGER and a singing HOODED
WARBLER at dawn. Then it went dead. I had 6 more warblers: one YB Chat, 3
Audubon's, 1 OC Warbler and a Wilson's.

The tail length of the Crow Valley nightjar is most difficult to ascertain in
relationship to the wings as the tail was drooped straight downward. The crown
(dark center, gray laterally) and to me the back pattern both look just fine
for Common Poorwill and wrong for Whip. I

The big highlights were
1) Least Tern at Lions Fishing Hole, Holyoke, Phillips
2) Alder Fly in Shelterbelt n of Wray
Also of note for shorebird bereft Phillips were WR Sand, Stilt Sand, Least

Regarding Gary Koehn's superbly photographed bird at Chico...
The streaked undertail coverts, relatively dark cheek, and black markings at
edge of crown are all Townsen'ds traits or show Townsend's influence, whilst
the yellowish patches near legs are those of a BT Green.

At DePooter Lake just s of Julesburg. See CFO county birding site. Bird was a
female associating with a male Spotted and near a hybrid - go figure. You'll
need to go over locked gate at end of road into DePooter. The birds were

This evening at around 5 PM there was an Eastern WP at Duck Creek SWA, the
Crook access (you don't have to be a thief or politician to enter) at the n end
of CR 83, just e of Crook. It was along the creek near the parking area , but
it flew as I aimed my camera , so I know not where it flew to.
Eastern Towhee is with a hybrid and a Sptted Towhee at parking area 11 of
Tamarack Ranch. The Alder flycatcher is singing at parking lot five. Both areas
are e of road to Crook from I 76

Eastern Wood-Pewees are not rare birds, but a common species in North America.
Rare in Colorado, and also likely a migrant, hardly disturbed by a couple plays
of a recording.

I visited Navajo State Park in April and was impressed, though it was still
early in season, and it was a cold and blustery day. I returned today, with a
better sense of where to go, and I was most pleased (thanks to Tony L for
putting this as a high priority on my SW CO trip).

But I digress. The bird I called an Eastern YB Chat is likely an intergrade
between Eastern and Western. It had the very short white submalar that is the

ornithologists, was visiting here last week. In preparation for his visit, he
used eBird to decide where to go. In the process of this, he noticed that many

muddied location known as Tamarack Ranch. It was still impressively birdy, with
most of the birds being in the semi-flooded riparian areas, with few birds in
the shelterbelts. Note that there was

separately, sometimes close to each other... I often heard both species give
atypical songs. Indeed, we'd never ID the bird on song alone, and at that time,

end, spending most of its time right on the border of private property and the

I've heard back from 5 excellent birders, 4 or whom have had to deal with
issues such as potential hybrid SNEG x LIEG as well as plain old Little vs
Snowy Egret ID. All said, without hesitation, that the Latham bird is a Snowy.

Snowy Egrets trying to convince me that they were, indeed, young Little Blue
Herons. There are also juv California, RB, and Franklin's Gulls about.

Today, Smith Reservoir was filled with birds and good ones at that
Highlights included an adult Caspian Tern, an adult breeding plumage Glossy
Ibis, an apparent Glossy x WF Ibis (perhaps that Glossy had bred with WF Ibis

On this soggy morn, I visited Crow Valley and wandered around for a couple
hours.
At the north end, where the group campground is, a bright Eastern Wood-Pewee
was making forays until set upon by a Western Wood-Pewee. Much noise was made
during the tussle, and afterwards, the

On a whim I headed SE today. I started at Jett Res in Kiowa, which only had a
few shorebirds unlike a week ago. Perhaps due to local Peregrine in attendance.
Then went to Neenoshe locust grove where the scrubby locust, tamarisk and
Russian Olives held 50 species of land birds.

I have a bit of a theory about why the Plains have been so devoid of common
migrants this fall.
The mountains have been lush.
Usually our mountains are arid in fall, and therefore, relatively devoid of

Today I birded around Weld and bits of Larimer
It seems as if shorebirds have temporarily pushed on and so have birds such as
Sabines Gull
Landbird movement, however, was evident at Crow, with birds flying in and out

Passerine numbers were low in NE corner of CO today but Nick and I did manage

The headliner was clearly an EASTERN MARSH WREN along the s edge of Stalker
Lake before you get to the marsh. It sang and then called persistently allowing
for some decent

The breeding distribution of Eastern Marsh Wren reaches west to cen. NE, cen.
SD, and I believe, ND and Alberta.
Given that we have so many records of other eastern birds with an even more
easterly distribution, it seems rather unlikely that Eastern Marsh Wrens DON'T

The biggest highlight was an apparent YELLOW PALM WARBLER at Eaton Cemetery

Warbler turns out to be a Yellowish Palm Warbler - either a bright Western

accurately predicted that a day of heavy rain and hard east winds followed by a
night of 60+ mph winds from west would produce rarities on the outer coast.

As for the Magnificent visitor, outcome will never be known.
However, note that Magnificent Hummingbirds are one of the most regular
wintering hummingbirds at higher elevations in SE Arizona's mountains, often
surviving prolonged

Nick Moore and I spent the day roving around Lincoln County. Much of the day
was spent on private property, but one trend was clear. The westerly flow
before last nights storms brought western birds
We had 3 Virginia's Warblers, a Townsend's, a Plumbeous Vireo, a Hammond's
Spent 90 minutes at birdy but Luciless Eaton Cemetery. Crow Valley very birdy
but mostly Spizella sparrows and YR Warblers. Did have a GRAY CHEEKED THRUSH as
main highlight. That and two Bufflehead in flooded parking area. Bring high
boots if you are going to bird Crow Valley

A key point is that the Lucy's was singing frequently around noon today.
I was there yesterday around 10AM, and on several occasions, from the correct
spot, thought I heard a Lucy's Warbler. Since I couldn't find the bird, I
thought I was just hallucinating, but probably not

So, yesterday I finished with 122 species just birding Crow Valley, Eaton
Cemetery and Stewarts' Pond/Latham/Beebe Draw and finishing my day at 3:30. 130
would have been pretty easy to attain.
And this was with only 4 warbler and 1 vireo species.

The NEOTROP CORMORANT was the only cormorant on the pond when I was there, and
it was swimming amongst an enormous flock of RB Mergansers (200) and Common
Mergansers (nearly 100). That which caught my eye initially, as I was busy
tallying mergs, was that it was about the same

Alec Hopping had suggested a summer trip to search for California Quail in
Colorado. They occur in goodly numbers close to the CO border in Moffat.
Gambel's Quail that far north are scarce in CO, so any quail in Moffat or Rio
