Can't you use the terminal, or I forget what it's called in Windows [start

Win 7, firefox, looks like you said, like an FTP listing. As I said the
only thing I can't seem to do that I can do without is also saving the
'links' of the nested folders. If I save the web page in full and open it
on another machine, it of course does not open the folder links. But the
 main folders show up fine.

Re: [CGUYS] Webhosting Question

2009-04-28 Thread Tony B
Heh. Just spotted another one; seems timely. Remember to take all
these quotes with a grain of salt; these are the truly discontented.

I'm just about to move to [] from 1and1 (who are awful btw,
please anyone reading this do not even consider 1and1, even if they
offer you lifetime hosting for free!).

But a nearby thread gives them a better take:

I wouldn't recommend 1and1's hosting, but their domain registration is
both inexpensive and fully (including EPP auth codes) under control of
the domain owner which is also reflected in all whois lookups.

Which actually touches on a point I was making earlier. Many people
don't care to have to fool with things like EPP auth codes and might
be a lot better off with a different solution other than their own
website.

Oh, btw, some other hosts to avoid that were mentioned (but not nearly
as often as 1and1): Bluehost, Ipower, Streamline.net, ANRHost,
Jumpline, Surfspeedy, Vodahost, IXwebhosting, and oddly, *any* host
outside of the USA.

I personally stick to North American datacenters because the vast
majority of my visitors are here and I want to minimize latency. I've
read from more than a few sources that the hosting prices in Europe
and elsewhere tend to be higher, and that the datacenters and network
backbones elsewhere aren't as robust as they are in the North American
Tier IV spaces.
I know many Europeans choose hosting over here because the better
infrastructure outweighs the latency hit.

[CGUYS] New MS ad...

2009-04-28 Thread phartz...@gmail.com
Saw the new MS Laptop Hunters ad last night on the TV. Besides
the norm of making the point the WIndows computers are cheap, I was
struck by what is obvious, yet to me questionable about the
correlation about being concerned about price while still spending an
awful lot on a kid. In the ad, the mom is out with her son, shopping
for a gaming computer for what appears to be maybe a thirteen/fourteen
year old. Her budget is $1,500. Is this the norm these days for
expenditures on the whims of children?

I don't think it's the norm, especially in this economy, but there has
been some very interesting research reported lately about some beneficial
effects of gaming. There was a study not long ago that demonstrated
significantly improved hand-eye coordination and such, another one that
showed enhanced problem-solving ability, and now this:

Of course, this was followed up a month or so later by a report that some
kids are addicted, literally, to video games. Parents have been saying this
for a long time, but it's now official: 8.5% of kids in a psychological
survey showed multiple signs of behavioral addiction.

GoDaddy is inexpensive and you pay additionally for more features. Yahoo

Of course, try the obvious (reboot the computer, reboot the printer, replug,
check the ink, try the printer and cable on another computer)
If all else fails, a complete reinstall of the operating system may be your
best solution.
Win98 was not very stable... it usually needed to be erased and completely
reinstalled yearly for power users, and 2 to 3 years for the average (light
use) users. Of course a botched install of a device driver or application
might damage the registry to the point of needing a complete install in just
1 day (Hey, I've seen it happen!) This will also restore the speed that the
user experienced when they first bought the computer, and that makes them
very happy!

In January, after months of trying to fix my mother-in-laws WIN98 printer
problem over the phone, I just took her a new computer. She insisted the
refilled ink cartridge was new and working, but when I visited her, there
was no ink (or dried ink) in the cartridge. She was too cheap to buy a new
manufacturer cartridge to test her printer.

 Good luck!

The big failure was that the folks at WordPerfect never figured out how

It also didn't help that WordPerfect got sold several
times first to Novell and then Corel.

The big failure was that the folks at WordPerfect never
figured out how to re-engineer their program for a GUI.
They made lots of mistakes. Their menu structure was
terrible. The tried to invent their own user interface
rules instead of following the operating system's
 conventions. It was a flop.

I thought they tried to use a version of thier DOS interface
in the Windows world. At the time, WP was the leader of the
word processing packages, they wanted to maintain the same
user I/F to make the transition easier.

As much as I criticize MS for its user interface foibles,
the errors made by WordPerfect Corp were far, far worse.

I heard (?somewhere?) the single application that sold Windows
to the masses was a give away called Solitaire.

Re: [CGUYS] Q: what are current best practices for limiting email spam?

2009-04-28 Thread Allen Firstenberg
Several thoughts come to mind:
- Since the town may also have a website, it sounds like its not
unreasonable to have a web form on the site instead of any other email way
to get a hold of the government. You can put a CAPATCHA or other
bot-obstacles in front of the form.

- Route email through something like gmail, which keep up-to-date on the
current spam methods and do a pretty good job at making sure that they
filter out the junk.

- Figure out why they really want or need email. There may be other methods
that are more suitable. Is the email so they can communicate with each
other, or with constituents? How about a forum (possibly that allows
anonymous posting, if thats appropriate) with a CAPATCHA?You might not
even need the CAPATCHA if its just for internal discussions.

I do this. Works great.

First came windows and their first implementation to windows did not go well.

They came out with WP6 and that was much better. Then came all the

They were a great Unix/Xenix WP and our clients loved it.

 document.

It also didn't help that WordPerfect got sold several

I thought Windows showed up before the Novell Corel, but the

Right. My point wasn't put a web form there, and you're fine. It was
put a web form there, but you still need to put in some anti-bot
technology. Your suggestion of a form field may be easily effective as
well, although I've seen some spammers get around simple ones of these as
well.

Re: [CGUYS] What to look for in digital converter box?

2009-04-28 Thread Ranbo
Yes, but what percentage of the time do you end up having to return
electronic purchases made online? All this talk of reception problems,
maybe a need for a special antenna, possibly roof antenna, etc. makes me
think a return may be fairly likely. But maybe there is no real good
alternative, as the stores do seem to be out of these and so many other
things. K-Mart online shows the Zenith Insignia out of stock.

It would be so helpful if you could search a specific store's inventory
online, rather than having to go in person or call and take a chance that a)
anyone will answer and b) if they do, they will give you an accurate answer.
