As for accessories you can find things all over. Even stores that do not sell anything from Apple may have a large selection of iPod accessories. For example, Radio Shack has a large collection of iPod accessories, but no iPods. Re: [CGUYS] iPod Recommendations?
I love my 4g nano, but would recommend something larger. You don't really want to have to manage playlist. You just want to sync. A colleague recently replaced his iPod with a nano. He loves it, but worries that it is so small that he may lose it. A co-worker's husband gave her an iPod for Christmas with with photos and tunes from their courtship. She cried. Evil man setting such high standards for the rest of us. I did that last Christmas except that I loaded it with pictures of our kids and family and all her favorite music. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] iPod Recommendations?
You can buy cases online and locally from $1 to $30, sometimes for the same case--nice ones can be found for $20. Same for iPod car chargers. Got one at the 5-Below cheapo store, and see them at Target, etc. If your car stereo has an audio input jack, then all you need is an audio cable, minijack male to male, found at Radio Shack, KMart, etc. Plug into car audio jack and iPod headphone jack. Not iPod ready :-( ?? We have two solutions. One car has both cassette player and CD, so we use a cassette audio adapter. Otherwise we use FM transmitters. Monster iCarPlay devices are excellent--Cavan's was ~$30. iRiver's is OK in my truck. I like my old Arkon because it goes down to 87.4 FM--no interference. There are lots of other brands of better or worse quality. Some devices are chargers/docks/transmitters all in one. more details: http://ilounge.com/ This is all great information. I've narrowed it down to the 2nd Gen Nano 8GB which looks like it will do all that is needed. As far as accessories go, where is the best place to get them? The Apple Store offers the Belkin case online: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=2C26E916nplm=TL349LL/A The car/stereo connector cable, will any cable do or is it special to Apple. Apple wants $20 for it. Also, is the Apple Care Protection plan recommended? Well, if you look at the specifics on all of the items they check, they're easily repairable by you. Or you can spend $60. - Original Message - From: Richard P. When my Zone Alarm firewall updated this morning, Zone Alarm offered a free system checkup which I ran. It came back saying pretty much that my XPSP2 computer, which is 3 months old and has all available updates, spyware and anti-virus protection, is a virtual mess. See report: http://www.iolo.com/sm/freeapp/brands/zonealarm2/summary.aspx?session=14afed14-4f10-45ff-b70c-28f76fa184b5 They then advertise that all this can be fixed if I just buy Zone Alarm Internet Suite and System Mechanic, both for $60. I have always trusted Zone Alarm but this smells like a scam and at the very least, a lousy marketing tactic from what I thought was a reputable company. Is any of this valid? Should I upgrade to iTunes 7.5 from iTunes 6.0.4? I've been happy with 6.0.4. If I upgrade is there anything I need to look out for? I have a Mac running 10.4.11 and an iPod mini. I have never had a problem with an iTunes upgrade and appreciate the new features. However, I don't do anything fancy with my iTunes. I have read that people who rely on added scripts or manage their music collection intensively do have problems with upgrades. Re: [CGUYS] iPod Recommendations?
I have just found out that my wife would like (read: is expecting), an iPod for Christmas. I know next to nothing about them... The good news is that it is hard to go wrong with an iPod. Tey are uniformly well designed. The main issues you have to look at are storage capacity and controls. The smallest Shuffle has no screen so it won't let you pick specific songs. The Nano now has all the features of the big iPods, including video playing. I'm not sure if it will play video on a TV, like the big iPods do. The Classic iPods big selling point is massive storage. The Touch is the coolest iPod of the future. Some people prefer the Nano or Classic because they can be operated by touch without removing it from a pocket. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Zone Alarm Checkup?
e.g. The Hard Drive Health failure might be a true (and serious) SMART failure, or it might just mean you haven't defragged in a while (not serious). I probably just means that you do not have their SMART monitoring software installed. This week I restarted a Dell that was acting poorly. It halted in POST with a message that SMART was signaling a problem. So if you have that built into the hardware you don't need software to do it. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] IT Managers
You are being naive Tom. As a past major university computing specialist I can tell you that isn't so. University's for one thing are saddled with the tenure system that originated in the middle ages. A lot of university management is composed of burned out/ tought out tenured professors who have PLENTY of brains but no skills or training or relevant experience to manage anything and particularly not unforgiving 24/7 IT assets and production. Secondly, students for various reasons can only be used in minor roles such as help desk or low responsibility server admin assistance roles. That is because they are mercurially temporary (as in semester to semester), they are not allowed to work more than 20 hrs per week, they don't show up reliably at exam, major assignment and holiday times, they can't be given access to important passwords for a multitude of legal, academic and security reasons and as a group they are one of the world great sources of illicit computer gambits (as in asking the fox to guard the henhouse!). Academic computing is always a joke except for depts. where there are major money/ profit streams involved.(Computing, research, Physics, Engineering etc...) In those university areas, IT is staffed and run along corporate lines. db Tom Piwowar wrote: I probably have complained before about IT managers, but I am in a special case. [CGUYS] I'm so confused...need simple instructions. was:Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok? Update
I decided to go ahead and set up the ATT DSL and see if I liked it. I had signed up for the elite service which was to give me up to 6000kb/s. Of course she didn't tell me up to but said I'd get 6000 kb/s. I managed to figure out how to turn off the wireless in the ATT modem so I could continue to use my Apple Airport Extreme. It took me all day and part of the evening but I finally had all the computers in the house connected and everyone getting their email...no small thing for me as we get mail from multiple sources and none of them initially would come in with their old settings. My husband who is totally tech ignorant was ranting and raving something about why can't I just leave things alone. ;-) So it was a tense day to say the least but I did get it all figured out. Then I started testing the speed I was getting and it was wy below what she said I would get and was paying extra for...I was only getting 3000 kb/s. She said I should get between 3500 to 6000 kb/s and that maybe I should just downgrade to the next lowest level whose high speed was 3000 kb/s so I'd get the fastest level of that. OK. I did so. Then a few hours later, I was running more tests and the speed was only 1200 to 2200 kb/s in a level that was to guarantee me 1500-3000. From the reading I was doing on DSLreports, it appears they can turn up and down your speed remotely? So would they deliberately make it so you only got the bottom of the level you paid for? Would threatening to cancel make them give me what I paid for? Jim just came out and told me that some video clips that he had been able to play before now tell him that we don't have enough speed for them to play correctlyand they play very jerky. He's definitely not happy and neither am I. I feel like we're getting jerked around with this speed thing. So, I decided to hook the comcast cable back up and unplug the dsl. The cable modem shows activity but I can no longer connect to the internet. I even turned off the wireless and plugged the cable directly into the Mac Pro.shows ethernet is on but no connection. Then I plugged it directly into my laptopsame thing. So the cable, which had been working just fine is now useless and the DSL is too slow for what we need it to do. Besides just bitching and unloading my frustration on here, I am asking for some simple explanation of how these two forms of internet connection work differently and how I can go about getting the cable modem to go back out to the 'net again. Do I have to get down on my knees and cry and beg Comcast to come fix it and promise never to cheat on them again? Can you not have both DSL and cable connections in the same house even if on separate machines? I'm sitting here in Broadband Hell , watching the freezing rain fall on the 1 of snow we got this a.m. and feeling sorry for myself. I have to stop and remember that Tulsa has had no electricity for a week and are getting bombarded yet again. So feel free to smack me upside the head and tell me to get over it! g But if you can get my cable to work again on even one machine I'd be s grateful. Re: [CGUYS] IT Managers
For quite some time our local community college was years ahead of any computer labs in the state, it had the largest best run lab even against powerhouses like ASU and NAU. Even now they run their own in house department to build/maintain their own systems. No dell contracts around. They save tens of thousands by doing all of this in house instead of ordering cheap new systems from manufacturers. Students as well as the IT staff run the department. Like everthing there are generalizations and exceptions. Perhaps the reason Tom doesn't see well run IT departments is because they have no need of his service. Academic computing is always a joke except for depts. where there are major money/ profit streams involved.(Computing, research, Physics, Engineering etc...) Lacking money and staff can be a problem, but a university should ebe able to make up for this by using its best asset: brains. It looks like your IT director is not doing that effectively and for that I would blame the IT director for bad management skills. The things you describe as broken are mostly standard services. The IT director should have a few students who specialize in each of these narrowly-defined areas. omeone can learn the basics of supporting Office in a few hours. Re: [CGUYS] Zone Alarm Checkup?
Zone alarm Suite, owned by Checkpoint... the enterprise security firm, is currently the highest rated Antivirus, Firewall Malware protection suite. I have used its products for years and except for a couple of faulty updates, have been satisfied. You have to consider the suite alternatives... which seem to me to be worse for sure. If you want to handle the components independently, that works too but is a whole lot more work and complication for the user. db Tom Piwowar wrote: http://www.iolo.com/sm/freeapp/brands/zonealarm2/summary.aspx?session=14afed14 -4f10-45ff-b70c-28f76fa184b5 They then advertise that all this can be fixed if I just buy Zone Alarm Internet Suite and System Mechanic, both for $60. I have always trusted Zone Alarm but this smells like a scam and at the very least, a lousy marketing tactic from what I thought was a reputable company. Is any of this valid? You can have both, but after the AT$T experience I'd say dump it. The problems you are having are not unusual..AT$T's motto is 'we aren't happy till you aren't happy.' I didn't make that up, I stole it from a podcast. If your cable modem is like mine it has several lights. One of them should be CABLE or some such. It shows you actually have a connection to comcast. If this is not lit, you will most likely have to call comcast. If it is lit, then try changing cables from the cable modem to the computer. Stay connected directly to the cable modem till you figure out your problem as to not add to it by adding other thing that could be having issues. Try leaving the computer off, unplug the power on the cable modem and leave it off a few minutes, plug it back in and see if the cable light comes on and stays on. Once it's on, turn the computer on and try it. Mike On Dec 15, 2007 2:52 PM, Paula Minor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I decided to go ahead and set up the ATT DSL and see if I liked it. Paula, For getting cable set back up, here are some thoughts for simple steps: 1. Turn off the Cable Modem. 2. Turn off the Apple Airport Extreme router. 3. Turn on the Cable Modem. 4. Look for the Cable Modem light to indicate it is connected. On mine, it is the cable light of the four. 5. Then turn on the router. 6. Reset your connection to the router and see if you are on the Internet now. -- John DeCarlo, My Views Are My Own * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] I'm so confused...need simple instructions. was:R
If you reprogrammed your AirPort router to log you in via the DSL modem it will no longer have the settings to connect you through the cable modem. So, no, it is not as simple as just moving the wire from the DSL modem to the cable modem. If you were getting just a fraction of the data rate you were supposed to be getting and after downgrading your service to a lower rate you are only getting a fraction of the new lower rate, I woule suspect a problem with the line. You may have a high percentage of NACs so are losing bandwidth to packets that have to be resent. Did you try the tests we were playing with the other week? http://myspeed.visualware.com/ I decided to go ahead and set up the ATT DSL and see if I liked it. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Video Editing on an INTEL desktop.
The ULEAD Movie Factory bundled with Canon HG10 camcorder errors out with bad memory reference. Corel says it might be caused by zone alarm (which I doubt). I uninstalled and reinstalled ZA, then downloaded a free trial for EDIUS PRO 4. It also ended with error. Both packages installed ok, and both ended while accessing camcorder files. 2 sets of files exist: 1. Canon backup module, 2 ULEAD access from camera. Both packages ended in error while reading a file from each set into each editor. The desktop is a COMPAQ Presario, cpu is 1.999ghz (a bit slow for this app.), ram is 1G. Ulead requires 1G, but recommends 2G; the Edius editor requires 512M, recommends 1G ram, and a cpu of 4.3ghz. Any suggestions gratefully received. Do I need a new machine? Mike said: .AT$T's motto is 'we aren't happy till you aren't happy.' Funny but sad. I will say that everyone I worked with was very nice and tried hard to make sure everything was going as it should...tho they did screw up the initial order requiring me to cancel everything and start over again with more time on the phone. Tom P said: If you reprogrammed your AirPort router to log you in via the DSL modem it will no longer have the settings to connect you through the cable modem. So, no, it is not as simple as just moving the wire from the DSL modem to the cable modem. I turned off all the routers and other equipment except the cable modem which I plugged straight into my laptop and it did show it was connected but wouldn't go to the 'net. However, I did just unplug the modem and computer and left them off for a while. I just restarted and I have a cable connection now on the laptop using the ethernet cable. So I was able to test my cable speed on there. What I have found is that the 3 different testing web sites I used all gave me very different numbers so I still have no idea what I'm actually getting. The ATT speed test site had me testing the fastest both on DSL and cable : DSL: Download between 2200-2500 kbps; upload between 640-660 kbps Cable: Download 20.114 mbps Upload 1.590 mbps The Test My connection site that Tom recommended: Varied widely depending on location it went to. The Washington DC site was twice as fast as Chicago. DSL Chicago Download 770 kbps to 1.o9 Mbps; Upload around 645 kbps WA DC download 2.85 Mbps Upload 648 kbps Cable: Chicago download 2.93 Mbps Upload 1.59 Mbps WA DC download 5.49 Mbps Upload 1.59 mbps The DSLreports site DSL Download 1630 kbsp Upload 580 kbps Cable download 11249 kbps Upload 1542 kbps So, I have no idea what to do now. I have a little less than 30 days to decide if I'm going to keep DSL. If I go back to Comcast I have to figure out how to get my router to work with it again and change all the email settings. UGH. But it does appear that , right now at least, Comcast is considerably fastertho at times it seems to crawl along. Do those of you with more experience in this area have any thoughts or opinions? Re: [CGUYS] Video Editing on an INTEL desktop.
First tell us if Windows Movie Maker works okay. Capture, edit, render? Oh wait. That's some odd version of the new AVCHD codec. You may be on your own with that one. I've never tried it. You can always try the Sony Vegas trial (free to try): http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/step2.asp?DID=734 On Dec 15, 2007 11:38 PM, Daniel B. Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The ULEAD Movie Factory bundled with Canon HG10 camcorder errors out with bad memory reference. I'm the furthest from an expert, but in the past have dabbled in both the DSL and Cable. I've stuck with cable. I have absolutely no qualifications in this, but only what I've been told. Cable works in blocks and depending on how many people are connected to your block at the time you are surfing, or whatever, will depend on your speed. I live in a small city of about 200,000 and the block is probably about 1 square mile. In a large city like New York the block could be one building. Anyway, the DSL providers I've talked to said (or tried to sell me on) that DSL is a constant speed, while cable fluctuates. I've seen the slow down on cable and found it usually is in the winter months. What this has to do with it I don't know, but we get bad weather here and it always seems to happen. I did switch over from cable TV to Direct TV and had to go out and brush off my disk. It was caked in snow and interrupting the signal. While I know cable companies receive their signals over satellite, I don't know if this is how they transmit their web service. From a DSLreports forum: It tries to detect compression of compressible data by measuring upload on a file of blanks then a file of less compressible data and looks at the difference. If there is one, the message is displayed. It may trigger for some connections that do not employ compression. The only ones I know of are some mobile networks and satellite broadband. It is quite possible that the current version is too sensitive during that test, and will display the message if the route to the server is not quite perfect. Other possibilities could include that your latency is quite variable, or your PC is underpowered (less than 1ghz) or your flash plug-in is getting destablized by other programs running at the same time or the test server itself is congested for some reason - things like that. I'm the furthest from an expert, but in the past have dabbled in both the DSL and Cable. I've stuck with cable. Cable uses a first come first served model of delivery. Telcos usually use a capped bandwidth, or a you get what you pay for model. I've seen the slow down on cable and found it usually is in the winter months. What this has to do with it I don't know. More people are online in the winter. It tends to saturate the head end of a cable service. While I know cable companies receive their signals over satellite, I don't know if this is how they transmit their web service. It isn't. They operate over landline, coax instead of twisted pair as is increasingly becoming uncommon with telcos. - Original Message - From: Jeff Miles [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Sunday, December 16, 2007 12:48 AM Subject: Re: [CGUYS] I'm so confused...need simple instructions. was:Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
