General Anatoly Sitnov paints a different picture. At a Tuesday press conference, Sitnov revealed that the Russian military now has "a rich new arsenal" to test. In this context, because of the civil war in Russia's south, Dagestan and Chechnya have become giant test ranges. Already the Russians have used the upgraded SU-25 attack aircraft against Chechen targets. "If there is ground combat," announced Sitnov, "we will test the Shark [helicopter gunship] as well as other weapons. We will also use advanced gear, such as night vision goggles and new firearms, including the new sniper rifles with increased range ... and also [we have] tanks which provide better protection from the enemy in close combat." How can this be? In the early days of the Yeltsin presidency, a curious announcement went largely unnoticed in the West: The Russian government admitted to an increase in armaments spending. While the Kremlin cut back its troop numbers to save money, and while it held back pay to hundreds of thousands of soldiers, it nonetheless decided to modernize its military equipment. Russian soldiers might live in desperate conditions for a few years, and the army might fall to a quarter of its Cold War strength, but in the next war they would have the most advanced weapons. One of the costs of maintaining a large army is the cost of paying the soldiers. The other great cost is that of purchasing new weapons. The solution to Russia's military backwardness was therefore simple: Neglect the soldiers while you upgrade the weapons. Once the weapons are upgraded, go back to paying the soldiers -- and fill up the armed forces with recruits. Col. Stanislav Lunev, a defector from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff, noted over a year ago that Russia had as many generals as it did at the height of the Cold War. "It takes eight weeks to make a soldier," said Lunev, "but it takes two years to make a division commander." In other words, Russia's military build-down was equivocal from the start. Russia created a mechanism for rapidly mobilizing millions of men in a short time and putting them into ready-made combat divisions. Today we see that a mobilization is taking place, masked at first by the Yugoslav crisis, then by the current civil war in Russia's south. The details of Russia's mobilization are fuzzy, the extent of the buildup has been blurred, but it is nonetheless taking place. Hundreds of thousands of additional men have been put under arms since March. Russia's Black Sea Fleet has been manned. The Kremlin's armed forces have engaged in many war exercises, and now there are unprecedented joint naval maneuvers planned with the Chinese Navy. It should be noted that China has been mobilizing troops and ships as well. But new conventional weapons and conventional mobilizations are nothing compared with Russia's new weapons of mass destruction. Earlier this month, the Russians launched a state-of-the-art ballistic missile. It lifted off from Russia's west Arctic cosmodrome and traveled 6,000 miles before slamming into a target range in Siberia. The missile scored a direct hit. Russia's new Topol M is the world's finest strategic rocket. It was designed to leave the earth's atmosphere, to glide through space and return to earth with deadly precision. It was even built to evade interception. But the most important fact about the Topol M has yet to be mentioned. The Topol M was built for one purpose -- to attack America. Russia's military is organized differently than the U.S. military. In America, we have five services: the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. In Russia, they also have five services: the Army, Air Force, Navy, Strategic Rocket Forces and Air Defense Forces. This organizational arrangement tells us a great deal. Russia's nuclear missiles have their own dedicated service branch. Even more interesting, Russia has a special anti-air and anti-ballistic missile service that is dedicated to shooting down American bombers and missiles (the Air Defense Forces). In other words, two of Russia's five service branches are entirely oriented towards nuclear world war. Russia's current defense minister, Igor Sergeyev, used to be the head of Russia's Strategic Rocket Forces. His close friend and relative (by marriage), General Yakovlev, is the current head of those forces. We need to remember that Sergeyev and Yakovlev have been thoroughly schooled in Russian nuclear war theory. You could even say that the theory and practice of nuclear war was the "mother's milk" of their military education. And what does Russian military theory teach about nuclear war? Launching Saturday night from a California base is a Minuteman missile that has the potential to carry a nuclear warhead anywhere in the 50 states. Some 4,300 miles (6,900 kilometers) away in the Pacific Ocean, a booster rocket will fire an interceptor. If the two collide, at a combined speed of 16,000 mph (25,000 kph), the force would reduce both missiles to harmless space dust 140 miles (225 kilometers) above the earth. The Minuteman has a dummy warhead and a decoy balloon. The 4,500-mile-per-hour (7,240-kph) intercepting missile - a 55-inch-long (139-centimeter-long), 120-pound (54-kilogram) device that looks like scuba diving equipment - is a Raytheon-built Exoatomsopheric Kill Vehicle that will be fired from Meck Island in the Marshalls. Supporters of the land-based protective shield that will cost tens of billions of dollars if fully deployed are looking for a spectacular success. That would help compel approval by President Bill Clinton or his successor, and set the United States on a course of at least limited protection against outside nuclear attack. The most ardent proponents look to the test now scheduled Saturday night as a first step toward reviving a space-based Star Wars type system, although that is not part of current planning. The limited ``hit-to-kill'' system is designed to knock down missiles launched by rogue states or terrorists; it could not ward off a multimissile attack from a major nuclear power. The CIA says North Korea, Iran and Syria all are developing long-range missiles that could hit the United States. Saturday's test contrasts with earlier tests aimed at shorter-range launches against U.S. troops in the field. Those tests have missed more than they have hit. The Pentagon is playing down expectations for the long-postponed interceptor test, although even critics of the technology expect a successful collision. ``This is mainly to see if we can actually hit something,'' said Lt. Col. Rick Lehner, spokesman for the Pentagon's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. ``Even if we miss and we know exactly why we miss, we will consider it a success,'' he said in an interview Wednesday. Two more tests are scheduled before a June 2000 deployment readiness review by the Pentagon and a presidential decision on initial deployment, expected shortly thereafter. At least two of the three have to intercept before the Pentagon will go ahead with broader testing, Lehner said. Whatever the outcome, the tests are raising political and practical concerns. ``This represents a serious misalignment between prevailing U.S. attitudes and prevailing international attitudes,'' said John Steinbruner, a senior Brookings Institution analyst. With more weapons and more ways of stopping them, the chance of nuclear accident increases, Steinbruner said at a news briefing sponsored by the Union of Concerned Scientists, which opposes the testing. Deployment of a possible 20 interceptors in Alaska by 2001, if approved, would put the United States in violation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty with Russia, said Steinbruner. Further deployments also are being considered for North Dakota. He said the test itself is likely to bring protests from Russia and China and increase resistance to any change in the ABM treaty with Russia, which prohibits any system designed to defend the whole country. -Caveat Lector- Begin article www.wsws.org WSWS : News Analysis : Europe : Britain Labour's "anti-poverty" audit aimed at final dismantling of British welfare state By Julie Hyland 1 October 1999 Back to screen version The latest policy document from the Blair Labour government Tackling Poverty: Providing Opportunities for All has been hailed as a "landmark". The first report of an annual "poverty audit" is supposedly in line with Prime Minister Tony Blair's pledge that his government will eradicate child poverty by 2020. Launching the document, Social Security Secretary Alistair Darling said it heralded "the most far-reaching campaign against poverty since Beveridge ... for the first time a government is standing up to be counted setting specific standards against which we will be judged tackling poverty and its causes." Such bold claims deserve careful examination. The Beveridge Report, published in December 1942, laid out the foundations of the post-war welfare state system that existed in Britain without any real challenge until 1979. It was named after Sir William Beveridge, who chaired the committee set up during the wartime coalition government to examine social insurance schemes. Published in December 1942, Social Insurance and Allied Services became the basis for a system of universal state-run insurance, paid for by employers, employees and government. Its stated objective was to eliminate "want" by government establishment of a social safety neta minimum subsistence incomebelow which no one would be allowed to fall. The proposals were part of a broader political framework adopted by the British ruling class to ameliorate class antagonisms. This centred on a limited redistribution of wealth from rich to poor, through progressive taxation schemes. The Conservative government of 1979 marked a fundamental break with this social reformist agenda. As part of their free market policy, the Tories sought to undermine the benefit system and ensure a redistribution of wealth back to the rich. Whilst it achieved no small success on both fronts, it proved unable to wholly eliminate the state-backed "social safety net" in the face of mounting unpopularity. As government policy and economic restructuring increased unemployment and social deprivation, the numbers eligible for welfare assistance rose exponentially. By the end of 18 years of Tory rule, overall public spending had fallen by just 4 percent. Today, some 12 million people in Britain are officially designated as living in poverty, of these, 4 million are children. Big business and the rich regard the maintenance of the universal benefits system as an intolerabl e tax on their own wealth and profits. Labour's turgid 178-page document is a declaration of intent to finish dismantling the welfare state. At the centre of this lies the overturning of the conception of welfare provision as a universal right. Prime Minister Blair's favoured theme is that of "no rights without responsibilities". This means that civil liberties and access to social provisions are increasingly determined by individuals and their families obeying government dict ates. Benefits are to be paid only if an individual meets certain requirements; council housing will be allocated only to the "deserving", etc. According to Blair, moreover, the role of government is not to provide, but t o "facilitate". The report states that the current benefit system "has become part of the problem; not the solution". Its answer is to create a "pro-active" welfare state aimed at getting people off benefits and into work. Threats to w ithdraw assistance are a prime means through which this is to be achieved. The document is filled with references, every three or four pages, to government initiatives such as the "New Deal" work-for-your-dole scheme. Two of the four main points on which Labour says it wishes to be judged are in the reduction of the proportion of children living in households without a wage earner, and the proportion living in households with "relative ly low income". This is shorthand for reducing the numbers in receipt of social securitynot for raising living standards. Whilst the report lists 40 indices of poverty and social exclusion, the pitiful rate currently paid in welfare benefits is not mentioned. Social security payments have been undermined to such an extent that current allowa nces give a family of four £30 a week less than what independent experts consider the minimum needed for survival. This undermining of benefit rates is one of the primary causes of poverty, especially amongst children. Labour's "welfare to work" policies centre on expanding the supply of a cheap labour workforce. The "working families tax credit" underscores this approach. The new tax credit is aimed at those having been forced off bene fits, particularly mothers, who must take up low paid work. The government has triumphantly declared that this scheme will ensure a

Ventura said legalizing prostitution should be considered but is an unpopular idea because of religion. "Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers," the governor said. "It tells people to go out and stick their noses in other people's business." The governor, a former Navy SEAL who spent time in Southeast Asia in the early 1970s, said he couldn't condone what happened during the Tailhook Association's conference in 1991, when female Navy officers were groped and fondled by aviators at a Las Vegas hotel. But he said he understood it. "These are people who live on the razor's edge and defy death and do things where people die," he said. "They're not going to consider grabbing a woman's breast or buttock a major situation. That's much ado about nothing." Grobel suggested it wasn't trivial for the women. "So? You have to create these people for your own protection," Ventura said. Ventura declined to detail his military service or answer whether he had killed anyone, calling it an inappropriate question and "no one's business." Ventura talked about the best part of his job "It's good to be king," he said. "The best thing is that there's no one in this state who can tell me what to do." And the worst: "You become a slave. I can't go anywhere without guards. You become a prisoner of your own success." Although he has said he doesn't plan to run for president next year, Ventura said if he did, he would wait until summer to enter the race. "I would let Gore and Bush hang each other with all the rope they have, to the point where the public couldn't stand either of them. Their disapproval ratings would skyrocket," he said. "Then you enter the race three months before the election and take the whole thing." But he wouldn't run because the president "lives in a jail cell. He's the king of the jail cell. He's the most powerful man in the free world, but he's not really free, is he?" Ventura detailed his previously expressed belief that John F. Kennedy's assassination was a conspiracy. He said he believes assassins were hired. Playboy asked who hired them. "I don't know if I want to get this on your tape. I don't want people to think I'm some sort of erratic nut running the state of Minnesota. If you truly want to know, I believe we did, the military-industrial complex. A "tax protestor" is only someone classified by the Internal Revenue Service in accordance with the IRS definition of "tax protestor" per 'Illegal Tax Protester Schemes' below. Because the IRS has no authority over the use or application of the English language, and the phrase "tax protestor" is more commonly applied to two types of people by the general populace: People who refuse to pay certain taxes or file tax returns, as a result of their research into the laws, and their rights regarding this (and in some cases as a result of erroneous beliefs and hearsay about their non-obligations regarding certain taxes), and People who refuse to pay taxes in order to protest policies of the federal government that are supported by those taxes (such as people who refused to pay taxes during the Vietnam War). So, in a nutshell, if you do not pay 'income tax' because your research into your Rights and the respective laws have convinced you that you are not legally or morally obligated to pay a tax on your income, you are a 'Tax Protester' according to one or more of the popular definitions which are prevalent today! Reference The Official "Illegal Tax Protester Schemes" are defined in the law in the Internal Revenue Manual in Section 5431.4. See below: (It is interesting to note that the definitions below all require the common condition of either sending in an IRS form of some sort, usually a 'return', or only corresponding with the IRS via a letter or post card. Illegal Tax Protester Scheme Definitions 1. Constitutional Basis---Refusal to include tax return information on Form 1040/1040A because of violation of Constitutional rights. In lieu of information required on Form 1040/1040A, the illegal tax protester either shows "--0--", "none", "Object", or a Fifth Amendment annotation in all of the blanks or will include a broad general statement regarding his/her constitutional rights (including 4th Amendment and 16th Amendment). This is commonly referred to as a Porth/Daly type return. 2. Fair Market Value---Reducing gross income because of declining value of dollar. The gross income is listed on the face of the return and there is a large adjustment to income which makes adjusted gross income small enough for standard deduction to eliminate taxable income. The adjustment to gross income is on Schedule D, Schedule of Capital Gains and Losses, or Form 2106, Employee Business Expenses, for Form 1040. 3. Gold/Silver Standard---Any return with a statement that only gold or silver backed currency can be taxed. 4. Blank Form 1040/1040A---These generally fall into two categories. In one category the individual files a return with only a name and address, and possibly signature, and Form(s) W-2 is attached. This scheme is usually verified upon correspondence with the taxpayer. In the second category the individual files a return similar to the Porth type return, i.e. the lines contain "object", "Fifth Amendment", etc., with the exception that Form(s) W-2 is attached. In both instances, the return could or could not list marital status and/or exemptions. 5. Non-Payment Protest---Non-Payment or underpayment of tax based upon some type of protest statement written or attached to the return. 6. Protest Adjust---This is similar to Non-Payment Protest, in that the return contains specific unallowable items (e.g., deductions, exclusions, etc.) identified to some type of protest. 7. Mail Order Ministries---Individual receives income from non-religious sources and declares that it is non-taxable because of "vow of poverty". This scheme also involves returns where the individual includes all or substantially all of gross income as a contribution deduction on Schedule A of Form 1040. Some individuals will complete Form 1040 and then take an unusually large contribution deduction on Schedule A of Form 1040, normally 50% or more of the adjusted gross income. 8. Protester Letters and Cards---The receipt of letters and cards (without tax return) protesting the use of taxes for war, defense and/or other government spending policies, and indicating that this will affect their reporting and payment of taxes. 9. Family Estate Trust---The trusts are filed on Forms 1041. Terms such as "family", "equity pure", "prime", or "constitutional" are used in the title of the trust. A man named Earl Brian was spearheading a plan for worldwide use of the software, but essentially, the modified software was being pirated from the owners, Bill and Nancy Hamilton." In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Brian Leighton said, "I'm glad his parachute didn't open. I hope he got a hell of a high out of that ..." Thornton's mysterious death was discussed at length in a book written by Sally Denton entitled, "The Blue Grass Conspiracy." Part of The Company was headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky. Prosecutors in Lexington, Fresno, California (Brian Leighton), and Miami, Florida were working together in a joint effort to bring down The Company. The San Francisco Chronicle noted that in January, 1982, Gene Berry, a state prosecutor in Charlotte Harbor, Florida, was shot in the face as he answered his door. Police subsequently arrested Bonnie Kelly as Berry's murderer. Bonnie's husband, Mike McClure Kelly, was a suspected member of The Company who later pleaded guilty in the Fresno, California case. In Michael Riconosciuto's documents, I discovered a letter dated March 24, 1982, written on Cabazon letterhead to Michael McClure at Hercules Corporation from Art Welmas, President of the Cabazon Band of Indians. Copies (cc:) were also noted to Marshall Riconosciuto and Michael Riconosciuto. The letter complimented McClure's competence in presenting a clear and lucid explanation of a power pack under development at Hercules. Following the August 9 seizure, U.S. Customs and the DEA demanded that Kenex, Canada's largest producer and processor of industrial hemp products, recall previous shipments of other hemp products such as oil, granola bars, horse bedding and animal feed. Kenex is based in Paincourt, Ontario, 60 miles from Detroit. Hemp seed (Photo courtesy Canadian Hemp Corp.) U.S. Customs is threatening nearly $500,000 in fines against Kenex if the recalled products are not redelivered to Detroit Customs in the next few days. These fines are in addition to the fines and possible criminal charges that may be laid in relation to the bird seed load itself. A 30 day extension request to clarify the situation was denied by U.S. Customs. The agencies have taken these actions even though all of the products are exempt under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act, and many have been sold in the United States for 60 years. There has never a time when sterilized hemp seed or oil or meal was illegal. The DEA, after repeated requests, refuses to provide Kenex with any legal basis for the confiscation. Kenex's president, Jean Laprise says, "Kenex, along with many other U.S. companies are suffering irreparable damage due to the illegal actions taken by the DEA and U.S. Customs. It seems the DEA could be spending the U.S. taxpayer's drug war money in better ways than chasing after bird seed and horse bedding." Industrial hemp has no drug qualities and is grown in 32 countries including Canada, France, Germany, and England. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), mentions hemp as a strategic commodity. Currently, French and German hempseed products are still entering the United States under the same tariff code without problems. Kenex is in the process of preparing the paperwork to file a complaint under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Hemp foods are typically made from sterilized seed like that seized from Kenex. It is impossible for the seed to ever contain any tetra hydro cannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component in marijuana, which is produced in the flowering tops of the female Cannabis Sativa L. plant. The THC content in the fiber, leaf or flower of the industrial hemp plant is less than one percent. By contrast, the THC content of the Cannabis Sativa bred for marijuana production is around 10 percent. Kenex's western U.S. broker and importer of hempseed products is Nutiva, a Sebastopol, California based company. Nutiva has over 700 natural food stores, manufacturers and restaurants utilizing hempseed. Nutiva's hempseed bar, made with sunflower, hemp, flax and pumpkin seeds and honey, has just surpassed 100,000 units sales, making it the top selling hemp food in the U.S. John Roulac, president and founder of Nutiva, states, "People love the nutty, chewy taste of our hempseed bars. An arm of the navy air unit, this type of fighter bomber is used not only for strategic bombing of ground targets but also for direct assault at targets in the air. Manufactured at the Xi'an Aircraft Manufacturer in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the fighter bomber staged a brief flying performance during the '98 Air Exposition in Zhuhai, south China. China Displays New Artillery Weapons BEIJING (Oct. 1) XINHUA - Eight square formations of artillery troops are passing by the Tiananmen Rostrum. Only one type was seen in the National Day parade in 1984, while all the others are publicly displayed for the first time. All of the artillery equipments are designed and manufactured in China. Gone are the days when the Chinese Air Force warplanes could not be refueled in the air. And what's of strategic importance is that the flying tankers have boosted the air force's long-range combatibility. Missiles Formations Highlight Military Parade BEIJING (Oct. 1) XINHUA - Following artillery formations come the square formations of missiles that belong to the three services of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). The first square formation is of the surface-to-air missiles of the army. The missiles are carried by vehicles, which remarkably increase the maneuverability of surface-to-air missiles. The soldiers of the first formation are from an anti-aircraft brigade, the first anti-aircraft artillery troops of the Chinese army which shot down 890 U.S. aircraft during the Korean and Vietnamese wars. Now the soldiers have had their ack-acks replaced by sophisticated surface-to-air missiles. The surface-to-air missiles displayed today are China's advanced air defense weapons. The second square formation of missiles, which look slim and exquisite, are from the navy and normally carried by warships. But today they are by vehicles. Over the past five decades, the missile arms of the navy have developed quickly. Now the naval force is capable of attacking the enemy from the sea or from under the sea with conventional and strategic missiles. The last formation of missiles, each with a red head and green body, are surface-to-air ones operated by the air force. They are said to be one of the latest weapons for the Chinese troops and are advanced by world standards. Many of you have seen most of it before. It is being sent out due to requests. I have more information on the subject which I hope to process after Succoth. The articles is about the Khazars which is interesting in its own right but it also contains information concerning the Israselite origins of certain European peoples. Following this article will follow a number of postings briefly tracing Israelite groups from Scythia to western Europe. These postings will also contain information concerning the Israelite origins of western peoples. THE KHAZARS: SOME NOTES FOR FURTHER STUDY. The Khazars were a small but powerful people who once ruled over portions of Russia and eastern Europe. They (or at least many of their leaders) converted to Judaism, were eventually defeated and disappeared. Their descendants were either assimilated amongst the Jews or became Sabbath-keeping and other "divergent" christians many (if not most) of whom in some way or other migrated to the west and to North America. Other descendants of the Khazars may be scattered throughout the former area of the U.S.S.R. and in different parts of Europe. THE NUMBERS OF THE KHAZARS WERE NOT GREAT. AN ESTIMATE SAYS THAT THEY NUMBERED ABOUT 50,000. It may have been more but it could not have been excessively so. A knowledge of the Khazars is useful for several reasons. Evidence exists that the Khazars were descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel. There is also proof that they were related to peoples in northwest Europe. It follows that evidence connecting northwest Europeans to Israel is strengthened when cognizance is taken of the Israelite ancestry of their Khazar brothers. The Khazars and Anti-Semites. Another reason for studying the Khazars is that anti-Semites and some assimilationist Jews claim that the present-day Jews came from the Khazars who they assume were non-Israelite. Anti-Semites use their notion of the Khazars to allege that the Jews are impostors and not true descendants of Israel. Some "Identity" groups also make this allegation. So do the Arabs and some Negro anti-Semites. In the past some assimilationist Jews used the Khazar idea to claim that since their ancestors were not in Judah at a certain time therefore they were not culpable for whatever the Jews may or may not have done to the christian messiah. There is also an ideaological component some people wanting to present Judaism as a religion (more than an hereditary group) and the Khazars as non-Jewish converts emphasizing the fact that Judaism is open to all. KOESTLER There was a writer named Arthur Koestler who thought that by showing the Jews to be descended from the Khazars the Gentiles would stop hating the Jews since the Khazars were not in Palestine when Jesus was there. Koestler read the sources but chose to emphasize those that were in line with his goal and even these were not so convincing. Even so the book of Koestler (The Thirteenth Tribe) became a best seller and a favorite with anti-semites. The book itself does not really prove anything but anti-semites love it since it purports to show that the Jews are not really the chosen people and this is therefore another reason to hate them. Koestler did not believe in the Bible so he dismissed legends that the Khazars were descended from the Lost Tribes as fantasies. He was an atheist socialist or agnostic so any other "rational" simplistic explanation was preferable to him and to his idealogical goal. Kostler should have realized that: There are some types who will hate Jews no matter what. Some who will always be sympathetic. Some inbetween who can swing either way. Even though some of the most vicious haters of the Jewish people have been Christians so too most of the few friends and allies the Jews have had have been those who believe in the Bible -whether Christian or not. The background for some of the ideas about the Khazars also concerns the Karaites of Russia. The Khazars and Karaites. The Khazars ruled over many peoples some of whom were also influenced by Hebraising tendencies. In Judaism at that time there were two main streams. There were Rabbinical Jews who parallel the Orthodox Jews of today. They believed in the Bible and in its interpretation according to oral tradition. They were homogeneous (and still are) and consistent in their basic beliefs and practices. They usually managed to reach a consensus regarding the practical application of Biblical injunctions. THE AGATHYRSI AND THE PICTS The AGATHYRSI came to Scotland from Scythia at an unknown (but possibly late) date. The Agathyrsi in Roman times were considered to have crossed the sea to become forefathers of THE PICTS20 though what proportion they actually composed of the people known to history as PICTS is uncertain. The Agathyrsi at various stages had been reported of in different places: -- As being in the Pontus (i.e. in northeast Turkey) on the Black Sea shore just west of the Caucasus Mountains; -- In the north on the Baltic Sea shore according to Ptolemy; -- and, under the name of Akatziri, in the north, to the south of Estonia near the Baltic Seashore. -- Herodotus reported the Agathyrsi in Thrace and later Irish-Scottish tradition (referring to the Picts as "Cruithnigh") said that, "the Cruithnigh came from Thrace. They were the children of Gleoin Mac Ercol, that is, of Gelonus, son of Hercules, and were called Agathyrsi"21. They were said, in several accounts, to have sailed first to Ireland, then to Scotland. The Gothic historian Jordanus said that the Akatziri (i.e. Agathyrsi) were a most brave nation. The Agathyrsi (Akatziri) were to form the nucleus of the Khazar people. The Khazars converted to Judaism and at one stage became a world power. Their centre was in southern Russia, i.e. in Scythia. Ethnically the Khazars were related to the Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians. Saksin the Khazar capital was known as "The Saxon City"22. The Agathyrsi have been linked to the Goths23. Caucasian "Subarian traditions maintain that the Agathyrsians originated in Assur"24 i.e. there exists a tradition that the Agathyrsians came from Assyria and this is consistent with their having been Israelites who were exiled to Assyria and re-settled by the Assyrians on the fringes of their Empire. Herodotus relates the notion that the Agathyrsians, Scythians, and Gelonians were brothers, sons of Hercules and a serpent woman. The Khazars of whom the Agathyrsians formed a nucleus are described by Arab authors as consisting of three types: 1. A dark haired, dark-complexioned one "like Hindus"; 2. A dark haired, and light pale-skinned one, and 3. A red haired, blue-eyed, large limbed, wild countenanced, heavy moving one26. All three of these complexions (with some modification due to climate and intermarriages) are to be found in Scotland. Classical German sources linked the Agathyrsi with the Guths (Goths) and with early Germanic Tribes28. The Khazars were also linked with the Goths. The Caledonians of Scotland confederated with the Picts and they too were regarded as a North European group. The Caledonians were related to the Galadon of Northern Wales (Votadini) who had come from Scotland. Both groups descend from Gilead son of Machir of Menasseh. The Picts who came from Scythia and were descended from the Agathyrsi are often confused (in Encyclopediac articles, etc.) with indigenous peoples in Scotland with whom they may have amalgamated and to whom the name "Pict" may have been also applied at some stage or other. The Picts are archaeologically distinguished by their way of drawing animals and by certain symbols they employed: The Picts artistic style confirms their eastern origins and concerning this style it has been remarked that: "The animals which include fish, birds, bulls, boars, and deer are executed with vigour and economy in a style common to the northern barbarians from Scotland to the borders of China"29. In other words, the Picts used the Scythian art style. This style continued to be employed by the "Barbarians" (such as Angles, Saxons, and Franks) who emerged from Scythia as well as by the Picts who had migrated from the same regions. The fundamental elements of this style and its means of execution may be traced back to the area of ancient Israel. According to D.A. MacKenzie the Picts were never very numerous and formed a military elite that ultimately came to dominate all of Scotland30. The name "PICTI" is first found in Eumenius ca.296 c.e. but Sidonius Apollinaris assigned them an earlier time around that of Julius Caesar31. The Picts (says Whatmore) included the Caledones of northern Scotland and their capital was Camelon*32. They also had settlements in northern Hibernia (Ireland). It grieved him to think that his little Alice, who was a flower bud fresh from paradise, must open her leaves to the rough breezes of the world, or ever open them in any clime. So sweet a child she was, that it seemed fit her infancy should be immortal. But such repinings were merely flitting shadows across the old man's heart. He had faith enough to believe, and wisdom enough to know, that the bloom of the flower would be even holier and happier than its bud. Even within himself, though Grandfather was now at that period of life when the veil of mortality is apt to hang heavily over the soul, still, in his inmost being he was conscious of something that be would not have exchanged for the best happiness of childhood. It was a bliss to which every sort of earthly experience--all that he had enjoyed, or suffered, or seen, or heard, or acted, with the broodings of his soul upon the whole--had contributed somewhat. In the same manner must a bliss, of which now they could have no conception, grow up within these children, and form a part of their sustenance for immortality. So Grandfather, with renewed cheerfulness, continued his history of the chair, trusting that a profounder wisdom than his own would extract, from these flowers and weeds of Time, a fragrance that might last beyond all time. At this period of the story Grandfather threw a glance backward as far as the year 1660. He spoke of the ill-concealed reluctance with which the Puritans in America had acknowledged the sway of Charles II. on his restoration to his father's throne. When death had stricken Oliver Cromwell, that mighty protector had no sincerer mourners than in New England. The new king had been more than a year upon the throne before his accession was proclaimed in Boston, although the neglect to perform the ceremony might have subjected the rulers to the charge of treason. During the reign of Charles II., however, the American colonies had but little reason to complain of harsh or tyrannical treatment. But when Charles died, in 1685, and was succeeded by his brother James, the patriarchs of New England began to tremble. King James was a bigoted Roman Catholic, and was known to be of an arbitrary temper. It was feared by all Protestants, and chiefly by the Puritans, that he would assume despotic power and attempt to establish popery throughout his dominions. Our forefathers felt that they had no security either for their religion or their liberties. The result proved that they had reason for their apprehensions. King James caused the charters of all the American colonies to be taken away. The old charter of Massachusetts, which the people regarded as a holy thing and as the foundation of all their llberties, was declared void. The colonists were now no longer freemen; they were entirely dependent on the king's pleasure. At first, in 1685, King James appointed Joseph Dudley, a native of Massachusetts, to be president of New England. But soon afterwards Sir Edmund Andros, an officer of the English army, arrived, with a commission to be governor-general of New England and New York. The king had given such powers to Sir Edmund Andros that there was now no liberty, nor scarcely any law, in the colonies over which he ruled. The inhabitants were not allowed to choose representatives, and consequently had no voice whatever in the government, nor control over the measures that were adopted. The councillors with whom the governor consulted on matters of state were appointed by himself. This sort of government was no better than an absolute despotism. "The people suffered much wrong while Sir Edmund Andros ruled over them," continued Grandfather; "and they were apprehensive of much more. He had brought some soldiers with him from England, who took possession of the old fortress on Castle Island and of the fortification on Fort Hill. It was pretty generally understood that Hutchinson would act according to the king's wishes, right or wrong, like most of the other gentlemen who held offices under the crown. Besides, as he was brother-in-law of Andrew Oliver, the people now felt a particular dislike to him." "I should think," said Laurence, "as Mr. Hutchinson had written the history of our Puritan forefathers, he would have known what the temper of the people was, and so have taken care not to wrong them." If no dispute had arisen between the king and the people, Hutchinson would have had the character of a wise, good, and patriotic magistrate. In order to show what a fierce and dangerous spirit was now aroused among the inhabitants, Grandfather related a passage from history which we shall call THE HUTCHINSON MOB. On the evening of the 26th of August, 1765, a bonfire was kindled in King Street. It flamed high upward, and threw a ruddy light over the front of the Town House, on which was displayed a carved representation of the royal arms. The gilded vane of the cupola glittered in the blaze. The kindling of this bonfire was the well-known signal for the populace of Boston to assemble in the street. Before the tar-barrels, of which the bonfire was made, were half burned out, a great crowd had come together. They were chiefly laborers and seafaring men, together with many young apprentices, and all those idle people about town who are ready for any kind of mischief. Doubtless some school-boys were among them. While these rough figures stood round the blazing bonfire, you might hear them speaking bitter words against the high officers of the province. Governor Bernard, Hutchinson, Oliver, Storey, Hallowell, and other men whom King George delighted to honor, were reviled as traitors to the country. Now and then, perhaps, an officer of the crown passed along the street, wearing the gold-laced hat, white wig, and embroidered waistcoat which were the fashion of the day. But when the people beheld him they set up a wild and angry howl; and their faces had an evil aspect, which was made more terrible by the flickering blaze of the bonfire. "I should like to throw the traitor right into that blaze!" perhaps one fierce rioter would say. "Yes; and all his brethren too!" another might reply; "and the governor and old Tommy Hutchinson into the hottest of it! "And the Earl of Bute along with them!" muttered a third; "and burn the whole pack of them under King George's nose! No matter if it singed him!" Some such expressions as these, either shouted aloud or muttered under the breath, were doubtless heard in King Street. The mob, meanwhile, were growing fiercer and fiercer, and seemed ready even to set the town on fire for the sake of burning the king's friends out of house and home. And yet, angry as they were, they sometimes broke into a loud roar of laughter, as if mischief and destruction were their sport. But we must now leave the rioters for a time, and take a peep into the lieutenant-governor's splendid mansion. It was a large brick house, decorated with Ionic pilasters, and stood in Garden Court Street, near the North Square. While the angry mob in King Street were shouting his name, Lientenant-Governor Hutchinson sat quietly in Grandfather's chair, unsuspicious of the evil that was about to fall on his head. His beloved family were in the room with him. He had thrown off his embroidered coat and powdered wig, and had on a loose-flowing gown and purple-velvet cap. He had likewise laid aside the cares of state and all the thoughts that had wearied and perplexed him throughout the day. Perhaps, in the enjoyment of his home, he had forgotten all ahout the Stamp Act, and scarcely remembered that there was a king, across the ocean, who bad resolved to make tributaries of the New-Englanders. Possibly, too, he had forgotten his own ambition, and would not have exchanged his situation, at that moment, to be governor, or even a lord. The wax candles were now lighted, and showed a handsome room, well provided with rich furniture. On the walls hung the pictures of Hutchinson's ancestors, who had been eminent men in their day, and were honorably remembered in the history of the country. The troops, as I told you, had been removed to Castle William immediately after the Boston massacre. Still, however, there were many tories, custom house officers, and Englishmen who used to assemble in the British Coffee House and talk over the affairs of the period. Matters grew worse and worse; and in 1773 the people did a deed which incensed the king and ministry more than any of their former doings." Grandfather here described the affair, which is known by the name of the Boston Tea Party. The Americans, for some time past, had left off importing tea, on account of the oppressive tax. The East India Company, in London, had a large stock of tea on hand, which they had expected to sell to the Americans, but could find no market for it. But, after a while, the government persuaded this company of merchants to send the tea to America. "How odd it is," observed Clara, "that the liberties of America should have had anything to do with a cup of tea!" Grandfather smiled, and proceeded with his narrative. When the people of Boston heard that several cargoes of tea were coming across the Atlantic, they held a great many meetings at Faneuil Hall, in the Old South Church, and under Liberty Tree. In the midst of their debates, three ships arrived in the harbor with the tea on hoard. The people spent more than a fortnight in consulting what should be done. At last, on the 16th of December, 1773, they demanded of Governor Hutchinson that he should immediately send the ships back to England. The governor replied that the ships must not leave the harbor until the custom house duties upon the tea should be paid. Now, the payment of these duties was the very thing against which the people had set their faces; because it was a tax unjustly imposed upon America by the English government. Therefore, in the dusk of the evening, as soon as Governor Hutchinson's reply was received, an immense crowd hastened to Griffin's Wharf, where the tea-ships lay. The place is now called Liverpool Wharf. "When the crowd reached the wharf," said Grandfather, "they saw that a set of wild-looking figures were already on board of the ships. You would have imagined that the Indian warriors of old times had come back again; for they wore the Indian dress, and had their faces covered with red and black paint, like the Indians when they go to war. These grim figures hoisted the tea-chests on the decks of the vessels, broke them open, and threw all the contents into the harbor." "Grandfather," said little Alice, "I suppose Indians don't love tea; else they would never waste it so." "They were not real Indians, my child," answered Grandfather. "They were white men in disguise; because a heavy punishment would have been inflicted on them if the king's officers had found who they were. But it was never known. From that day to this, though the matter has been talked of by all the world, nobody can tell the names of those Indian figures. Some people say that there were very famous men among them, who afterwards became governors and generals. Whether this be true I cannot tell." When tidings of this bold deed were carried to England, King George was greatly enraged. Parliament immediately passed an act, by which all vessels were forbidden to take in or discharge their cargoes at the port of Boston. In this way they expected to ruin all the merchants, and starve the poor people, by depriving them of employment. At the same time another act was passed, taking away many rights and privileges which had been granted in the charter of Massachusetts. Governor Hutchinson, soon afterward, was summoned to England, in order that he might give his advice about the management of American affairs. General Gage, an officer of the old French War, and since commander-in-chief of the British forces in America, was appointed governor in his stead. One of his first acts was to make Salem, instead of Boston, the metropolis of Massachusetts, by summoning the General Court to meet there. According to Grandfather's description, this was the most gloomy time that Massachusetts had ever seen. The people groaned under as heavy a tyranny as in the days of Sir Edmund Andros. Boston looked as if it were afflicted with some dreadful pestilence, so sad were the inhabitants, and so desolate the streets. There was no cheerful hum of business. The merchants shut up their warehouses, and the laboring men stood idle about the wharves. But all America felt interested in the good town of Boston; and contributions were raised, in many places, for the relief of the poor inhabitants. "Our dear old chair!" exclaimed Clara. "Neither Congressman Bush nor any other member of the Bush family asked for Barnes' help," the lawyer's statement said. Bush for a pilot position with the Air National Guard." At a Houston campaign stop on Monday, Bush said he did not know whether Barnes had intervened on his behalf in 1968. "I never asked for, (and) I don't believe I received, any special treatment," said Bush, who served in the Guard, based in Houston, from 1968 to 1973. Bush's military record became part of a federal lawsuit when former Texas Lottery Director Lawrence Littwin alleged that Gtech, operator of the state lottery, was behind his 1997 firing after five months on the job. Littwin's lawsuit claims Gtech held sway over the Texas Lottery Commission because Barnes, Gtech's former lobbyist, had knowledge about how Bush got into the Guard. But Gtech had severed its ties with Barnes before Littwin was hired by the Lottery Commission. Gtech and Bush have denied any involvement in Littwin's firing. The governor, the front-running Republican presidential candidate, continued to defend his service as a fighter pilot in the Air National Guard. "I can tell you what happened," he said Monday. "Nothing happened. My Guard unit was looking for pilots, and I flew for the Guard." "I'm proud of my service," Bush added, "and any allegation that my dad asked for special favors is simply not true. . . . I didn't ask anybody to help get me to the Guard, either." A spokeswoman for the elder Bush has said that Adger was a close family friend but that the former president knew nothing about any attempts by Adger to get the younger Bush into the Guard. In the box were about a hundred large (about 2'x3') plastic signs that stated: "This City Under Martial Law" in bright colors. It said something about the fed govt and had what looked like a legal reference (the driver claims to know nothing about legal issues, but he thought it was a reference to a law or an Executive Order or something). There were several hundred boxes of these signs. The driver doesn't know what Wal-Mart has to do with the signs. But he did state that Wal-Mart sometimes hires out space on their trucks if space is available. I might suggest that maybe the govt was using Wal-Mart trucks to keep a low profile. Anyway, the info came to me by way of a long route. But the sources are "innocent bystanders" with no history of right-wing reactionary politics. The driver was married to a woman who was related to Brandon's wife. He swears the info is accurate and that he spoke with the driver himself to confirm what was passed between the respective wives. The driver claims there were hundreds of boxes, each one with at least a hundred large signs declaring martial law. I thought this was worth passing along. Especially since the fed govt is telling us (Wednesday issue of USA Today and today's press releases) that we have nothing to fear. The dealer, Mary Boone, was charged with unlawful distribution of ammunition and with resisting arrest, said Detective Joseph Pentangelo, a police spokesman. She was also charged with possession of unlawful weapons and possession of stolen property for another piece in the one-man show by the sculptor Tom Sachs, which featured homemade guns, Detective Pentangelo said. Ms. Boone was being held at the Midtown North precinct house early this morning and was expected to be taken to Manhattan Central Booking to spend the night in jail, the detective said. All of the charges are misdemeanors. The arrest of Ms. Boone, 48, a flamboyant, sharply dressed art- world celebrity who came to prominence in the 1980's, comes in the midst of Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's battle with the Brooklyn Museum of Art over a painting of the Virgin Mary partly obscured by pieces of elephant dung. The Police Department's chief spokeswoman, Marilyn Mode, said that the two events were unrelated. "It is irresponsible, at the very least, to be distributing live ammunition to the public," Ms. Mode said. "This has nothing to do with the Brooklyn Museum." Joseph J. Lhota, a deputy mayor, declined to comment on Ms. Boone's arrest, saying he did not know enough about the case. Sachs, whose work deals with consumer culture, packaging and violence, placed the cartridges in an Alvar Aalto glass vase on the reception desk of the gallery at 745 Fifth Avenue, just north of 58th Street. Visitors were invited to take the cartridges home in orange air-sickness bags that were decorated to look like bags from Hermès. Ms. Mode said the police had received a complaint about the show, which opened on Sept. 10, on Wednesday and had gone to the fourth-floor gallery around 5 P.M. "We were told that this ammunition was available for anyone to pick up at this art gallery and we just looked into it," she said. "We wanted to see if it was bullets or foil-wrapped chocolates, and they're definitely not chocolate bullets." While detectives were waiting to speak to Ms. Boone, they wandered into the main part of the gallery and noticed a cabinet on the wall holding homemade guns -- Sachs's signature object -- and what appeared to be more live cartridges, Ms. Mode said. They decided to take all the suspect objects, as well as an unwilling Ms. Boone, into custody until they could determine which things were potentially explosive and which were works of art, Ms. Mode said. (Eileen Knauft) Ah, the sweet simplicity of sleep. You tramp into your bedroom with sagging eyelids and stifle a yawn. After disrobing, you douse the lights and climb into bed. Maybe a little reading or television massages the nerves, loosening them up for slumber's velvet fingers. In a while, you nod off. Suddenly, an alarm clock's shrill blast breaks up the dozefest as the sun pokes over the horizon. You feel a bit drowsy but shake it off and face the new day. Images of a dream dissolve like sugar in the morning's first cup of coffee. There's a surprising twist, however, at the heart of this familiar ritual. It simply doesn't apply to people currently living outside of the modern Western worldor even to inhabitants of Western Europe as recently as 200 years ago. In such contexts, and probably throughout human evolution, solitary shut-eye organized around a regular bedtime and a single bout of sleep proves about as common as stock car racing or teleconferencing. Surprisingly, anthropologists have rarely scrutinized the sleep patterns and practices of different cultures, much less those of different classes and ethnic groups in the United States. An initial attempt to draw back the veils of sleep in hunter-gatherer groups and other traditional societies has uncovered a wide variety of sleep customs, reports anthropologist Carol M. Worthman of Emory University in Atlanta. None of these snooze styles, however, looks anything like what modern Western folk take for granted. This finding raises profound questions for the burgeoning discipline of sleep research, Worthman says. Over the past 50 years, scientists have avidly delved into slumber's biology. Early research identified periods of rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, during which intense dreams often occur. Current efforts pursue genes involved in wakefulness and sleeping (SN: 8/14/99, p. 100). Researchers have also taken strides toward treating insomnia and other sleep disturbances. While investigators readily concede that they don't yet know why people sleep and dream, they assume that they at least know how people should sleep: alone or with a partner for a solid chunk of the night. Sleep studies therefore take place in laboratories where individuals catch winks while hooked up to a bevy of brain and body monitors. However, the distinctive sleep styles of non-Western groups may mold sleep's biology in ways undreamed of in sleep labs, Worthman suggests. They may influence factors ranging from sleep-related genes to the brain's electrical output during various sleep phases. "It's time for scientists to get out into natural sleep environments," Worthman remarks. "It's embarrassing that anthropologists haven't done this, and the lack of such work is impeding sleep research." A seemingly innocent question awakened Worthman to her discipline's ignorance of how people sleep. In 1994, she had a conversation with pediatrician Ronald E. Dahl of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, who studies the effects of mood disorders on sleep. He asked the Emory scientist to tell him what anthropologists know about the history and prehistory of sleep. "[My] bald, if somewhat overstated, answer was 'zero,'" she says. Sleep scarcely figures in the literature on either cross-cultural differences or human evolution, Worthman realized. Investigators generally relegate slumber to the sidelines, treating it as a biological given with little potential for variation from one place to another, she holds. A few researchers have bucked this trend. For instance, anthropologist James J. McKenna of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana has reported that babies in many countries outside the United States sleep next to or in the same room as their parents. Contact with a parent's body helps regulate an infant's breathing and other physiological functions, he asserts, perhaps lowering the risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SN: 12/4/93, p. 380). McKenna's work should have roused investigators of traditional societies out of their sleep-related torpor, Worthman says. Yet, even seasoned field-workers have tended to ignore sleepat least in their published workswhile describing food production, sexual practices, and other facets of daily life. So, Worthman contacted seven researchers who she knew had intimate knowledge of one or more traditional societies, including nomadic foragers, herders, and village-based farmers. Dr. William Sears, a pediatrician in Southern California, has also done research on co-sleeping, showing that infants who sleep with their mothers are less likely to die of SIDS. Sears believes that this is because the mother's heart rhythm regulates the baby's heart rhythm. Sears' books are available through LLL also. I found in my own experience that when my children were infants, I got a LOT more sleep if they were in bed with me. When they got hungry all I had to do was roll over. Most of the time they nursed without either of us fully waking up. I have been seeing some things on TV that are against co-sleeping. Using land grants, they established slave run plantations harvesting sugar cane, cotton and sisal. Blockades by the Americans in 1812 forced these land owners to seek refuge on other British islands. Homes and slaves were abandoned. Many families now living in the Caicos can trace their ancestry back to these times. The people in the settlement of Bambarra on Middle Caicos are believed to be direct descendants from the Village of Bombarra located on the Slave Trail in West Africa. A Spanish slaver shipwrecked off the Middle Caicos coast in 1842. The survivors established a village named after their home in Africa. Today, Provodenciales (Provo) is the main island of development. The 15,000 West Indian people living their make up more than half the population of Turks and Caicos. Middle Caicos at present has less than 300 persons living on the Island. Cockburn, Grand Turk is the Capital and the seat of Government. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British protectorate. They are governed by an appointed Governor and a Chief Minister who heads an elected Legislative Council. The council is comprised of thirteen representatives elected every four years, three appointed members, and a speaker. Bush proclaimed a week of remembrance for the Holocaust. He said, I urge Texans to never forget the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the Holocaust, and reflect upon our own humanity and our responsibility to respect all peoples. Good advice. He should reflect upon his own family, if he is interested in reflecting on inhumanity. G. W.s grandfather and great-grandfather, Prescott Bush and George Herbert Walker, were among the chief American fundraisers for Germanys Nazi Party. Through industrialist Fritz Thyssen, the Bush-run Union Banking Company and W. A. Harriman Company, the Bushes sold over $50 million in German bonds to American investors, starting in 1924. Thyssen in turn pumped money into the infant Nazi Party, which had proved its desire to rule and its willingness to use brute force in 1923s Munich Beer Hall Putsch. George Walker, GWs great-grandfather, also set up the takeover of the Hamburg-America Line, a cover for I.G. Farbens Nazi espionage unit in the United States. In Germany, I. G. Farben was most famous for putting the gas in gas chambers; it was the producer of Zyklon B and other gasses used on victims of the Holocaust. The Bush family was not unaware of the nature of their investment partners. They hired Allen Dulles, the future head of the CIA, to hide the funds they were making from Nazi investments and the funds they were sending to Nazi Germany, rather than divest. It was only in 1942, when the government seized Union Banking Company assets under the Trading With The Enemy Act, that George Walker and Prescott Bush stopped pumping money into Hitlers regime. George Bush, then an eighteen year-old man, held off entering Yale (a long-time Bush family destination, Prescott had graduated in 1917) to enter the military, perhaps to remove some of the tarnish from his familys honor. After the war, however, Bush joined the intelligence community and utilized his own connections to help fund drug runners from Laos to Panama. Most shocking was the so-called cocaine coup in Bolivia in June 1980, masterminded by fugitive Nazi Klaus Barbie, The Butcher Of Lyons. Bush, as director of the CIA, had funneled enormous amounts of cash to drug runners including Manuel Noriega and helped in the destabilization of Argentina. Barbie, who had been previously secreted in Latin America by the CIA, began working closely with the Argentines and used drug money to finance a neo-Nazi cabal, one that succeeded in overthrowing the government. The troops swept through the capital wearing Nazi armbands, according to former DEA agent Mike Levine. They may as well have been wearing armbands portraying syringes, dollar bills and Bush For President buttons. After the cocaine coup, the notorious Unification Church, the Moonie cult, began making inroads across Latin America. Among the first to arrive in La Paz after the Nazi/coke coup was Bo Hi Pak, Rev. Sun Myung Moons right hand man. Moon had invested $4 million in the coup, it so turns out, and still had plenty of money left over to help finance George Bush's campaign for president in 1988. Moonie lieutenant Thomas Ward also acted as the go-between between Barbie and his CIA payrollers. The Moonies were also large funders of the Contras and heavy investors in Latin America generally. Bush is still in Moons pocket: as recently as 1996, former President Bush flew to Argentina to appeal to Argentine president Carlos Menem to attend the gala celebration for Moons latest right-wing newspaper. Bush has made hundreds of thousands of dollars stumping for Moon groups since leaving the Oval Office, and has been working to make sure GW Bush gets his share of drug-tainted, Nazi managed cult money for the latest Presidential campaign. Stefan Wray and Ricardo Dominguez two self-styled electronic artists and political activists from EDT kicked off their presentation of "The Politics of Infowar" by comparing themselves to Daniel appearing in the lion's den. Denying that their actions constituted "hacking" or were in any way illegal, the duo nevertheless mounted a defense of "cyber civil disobedience." They recounted some of their previous actions, including a denial-of-service program called FloodNet, which they launched against Mexican government computer servers as a means of expressing support for the Zapatistas. "We don't consider ourselves hackers," said Dominguez, who said he defined the term as an attempt to infiltrate a Web site, rearrange, or deliberately crash a computer. "As politics becomes technologized, and technology becomes more politicized, we can expect more hacktivism," said Wray. They sees themselves as "digital Zapatistas" who are happy to use the notoriety they have gained from electronic disturbances to spread propaganda against the Mexican government to a "military-entertainment" complex that would not otherwise hear this point of view. EDT's most notorious action, a FloodNet attack against a Pentagon Web site on September 9, 1998, was thwarted when the Department of Defense retaliated with a Java applet called "hostileapplet," which caused the digital protesters' computers to crash. Dominguez and Wray said they had talked with lawyers at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society about the possibility of suing the government for violating the 1878 Posse Comitatus law that bans the use of the military in domestic law enforcement. "In the same way that the Pentagon is not allowed to use B-52s against New York City, they may also not be allowed to use offensive information war tactics against civilians," said Dominguez. But judging by the stream of attendees who deserted the presentation midstream, the duo's thoughts weren't too well received. "I need some toilet paper to clean out my ears after listening to that propaganda," said Michel Kabay, director of research and development for the ICSA labs and who is not known for his kind words for hackers to Winn Schwartau, director of consulting firm Interpact and a conference organizer. Because of what is happening in Colombia, we have a chance to rethink our drug policies and make some brave national decisions that could bring the nation out of the hole illegal drugs has pulled it into. We are edging closer and closer to military involvement in Colombia. That is happening because the drug dealers there have made so many billions of dollars that they are able to finance armies on both the right and the left to protect their product. The product constitutes somewhere between a quarter and half the cocaine sold in the shadow world of U.S. crime. This is something that has no precedent in modern society. What does have a precedent is America's stumbling and bumbling its way into a situation that cannot be settled easily. The situation is the result of a long history of troubles that have embittered the people of Colombia to such an extent that all the corruption works in favor of the drug dealers, men who have shown they are willing to murder anyone who threatens them. White House drug policy adviser Barry McCaffrey adamantly opposes drug legalization. He thinks we can win the war on drugs. But he does not understand that our propping up the government of Colombia with $ 550 million in military aid will not do the job at all because the drug dealers will outspend us. In fact, they probably have already. Leftist rebels control half the nation. Now the rebels have cut a deal with the dope dealers just as members of Colombia's right wing did earlier and are being paid to guard the dealers while battling the government. If we get into this mess, somebody's bird is going to be cooked, and I don't doubt that the American eagle will be on the menu, with Vietnamese spices and dressing. The war on drugs cannot be won on the U.S. end of the traffic, either. There is just too much money out there. When one person goes down, others immediately rush to take his or her place. Police departments have to fight the internal corruption wrought by drug-money bribes. Lower-income communities have to suffer the dangers that go with young people seeking out swift riches in a business where life is cheap and terror expansive. Drugs need to be legalized, privatized and taxed. That would bring plenty of legal money into society and provide enough funding for rehabilitation. What happened with liquor should happen with dope. Just as the nation didn't become a land of hopeless alcoholics with the end of Prohibition, it will not become one of helpless drug addicts. That goes against human nature. It will take substantial courage on the part of Bill Clinton or George W. Bush or Bill Bradley or Al Gore or whoever finally steps before the microphone to talk about all this. But there has never been a better opportunity than now, because we can so easily see that continuing the war on drugs by trying to stop imports just isn't working. Of course, if drugs were legalized in order to destroy their business, those Colombian drug billionaires would know what to do. First, they would finance lobbyists to oppose the legalization. After they lost, they would go on to do what all robber barons have done. In their case, they could buy plenty of stock in pharmaceutical companies. In recent days, Patrick Buchanan has been blaming the news media for
dishonest reporting on his new book "A Republic, Not An Empire," which
raises questions about U.S. intervention in World War II.
Since Buchanan is vehemently denying that he is bigoted toward Jews or
anyone else, FAIR thought it was an appropriate time to reprint our 1996
compendium of Buchanan quotes documenting the presidential candidate's
broad-ranging bigotry.

On African-Americans
After Sen. Carol Moseley Braun blocked a federal patent for a Confederate
flag insignia, Buchanan wrote that she was "putting on an act" by
associating the Confederacy with slavery: "The War Between the States was
about independence, about self-determination, about the right of a people to
break free of a government to which they could no longer give allegiance,"
Buchanan asserted. "How long is this endless groveling before every cry of
'racism' going to continue before the whole country collectively throws up?"

On race relations in the late 1940s and early 1950s: "There were no politics
to polarize us then, to magnify every slight. The 'negroes' of Washington
had their public schools, restaurants, bars, movie houses, playgrounds and
churches; and we had ours." ("Right from the Beginning," Buchanan's 1988
autobiography, p. 131)
Buchanan, who opposed virtually every civil rights law and court decision of
the last 30 years, published FBI smears of Martin Luther King Jr. as his own
editorials in the St. Louis Globe Democrat in the mid-1960s. "We were among
Hoover's conduits to the American people," he boasted ("Right from the
Beginning," p. 283).
White House advisor Buchanan urged President Nixon in an April 1969 memo not
to visit "the Widow King" on the first anniversary of Martin Luther King's
assassination, warning that a visit would "outrage many, many people who
believe Dr. King was a fraud and a demagogue and perhaps worse Others
consider him the Devil incarnate. Dr. King is one of the most divisive men
in contemporary history." (New York Daily News, 10/1/90)
In a memo to President Nixon, Buchanan suggested that "integration of blacks
and whites -- but even more so, poor and well-to-do -- is less likely to
result in accommodation than it is in perpetual friction, as the incapable
are placed consciously by government side by side with the capable."

In another memo from Buchanan to Nixon: "There is a legitimate grievance in
my view of white working-class people that every time, on every issue, that
the black militants loud-mouth it, we come up with more money If we can
give 50 Phantoms [jet fighters] to the Jews, and a multi-billion dollar
welfare program for the blacks...why not help the Catholics save their
collapsing school system." (Boston Globe, 1/4/92)
Buchanan has repeatedly insisted that President Reagan did so much for
African-Americans that civil rights groups have no reason to exist: "George
Bush should have told the [NAACP convention] that black America has grown
up; that the NAACP should close up shop, that its members should go home and
reflect on JFK's admonition: 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but
rather ask what you can do for your country.'" (syndicated column, 7/26/88)
In a column sympathetic to ex-Klansman David Duke, Buchanan chided the
Republican Party for overreacting to Duke and his Nazi "costume": "Take a
hard look at Duke's portfolio of winning issues and expropriate those not in
conflict with GOP principles, [such as] reverse discrimination against white

Trying to justify apartheid in South Africa, he denounced the notion that
"white rule of a black majority is inherently wrong. Where did we get that
idea? The Founding Fathers did not believe this." (syndicated column,

As for the Tailhook Massacre... Ventura didn't go far enough in defending the Tailhookers. When you understand that the entire Tailhook Scandal was created to get rid of the high ranking naval officers that were running Faction 2, you begin to understand why it happened. President Clinton spent the first two years doing everything he could to get rid of the few remaining military men who still believed in the Constitution. Most of these men were forced to retire or were courtmarshalled. Navy Intelligence ran Faction 2. At the time, Faction 2 was the only opposition to the New World Order. Many of the men who attended the Tail Hook conference were either members of Faction 2, or were sympathetic to their cause. Tail Hook was also used to break the moral of the Navy. In my belief, it succeeded. One of these days I will resurrect the original Rumor Mill News articles that were written back in 95 and 96 on the Tail Hook Massacre. To fully understand Tailhookers, you have to put your normal mind on a shelf, suspend all judgement and try to see life from their eyes. If you train men to be killers, you can't expect them to act like normal people. For years, the Tail Hook Parties were designed to be a place where "Trained American Killers" could blow off steam in a "cloistered" environment. Isn't it strange that all the women who attended the previous Tailhook Parties haven't come forth and cried "Rape" or "Grope" or whatever they chose to cry? For the most part, the women who attended Tail Hook parties, or similar parties, were members of the larger Tailhook Family. They knew what to expect at such parties. If they didn't want to be groped or grabbed, then they didn't get anywhere near a Tailhook Party. While married to the Chairman of the Physics Department at the Naval Postgraduate School, I attended many parties given by Naval officers and their wives. I also attended many "retirement" parties. Some were quite ordinary, but others were every bit as raucous as Tail Hook. We always knew when the parties were going to be "mini Tailhooks", because these parties would be held in the Officer's Club at the nearby Army Post AKA, the Defense Language School on the Presidio of Monterey. Navy men always remember and rely on these famous words of advice, "Whenever necessary blame the Army!" Also realize that the "women's movement" has been used to destroy America's fighting force. Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder was the person who led the attack to destroy our military. Tailhook was only one piece of a larger plan to demoralize and destroy the military of the United States of America. Jesse Ventura spoke truth when he talked about Tail Hook but he didn't go far enough!!! That first sighting was equivocal - a provocative, squared structure, so encrusted with coral that its manmade identity was uncertain. Then, as recently as the summer of 1996, a sports diver accidentally discovered a huge, angular platform about 40 feet below the surface, off the southwestern shore of Okinawa. The features artificial provenance was beyond question. Widening their search, teams of more divers found another, different monument nearby. Then another, and another. They beheld long streets, grand boulevards, majestic staircases, magnificent archways, enormous blocks of perfectly cut and fitted stone - all harmoniously welded together in a linear architecture unlike anything they had ever seen before. In the following weeks and months, Japans archaeological community joined the feeding-frenzy of discovery. Trained professionals formed a healthy alliance with the enthusiasts who first made the find. In a progressive spirit of mutual respect an working alliance, academics and amateurs joined forces to set an example of cooperation for the rest of the world. The rectangular stone ziggurat under the sea off the coast of Japan could be the first evidence of a previously unknown Stone Age civilisation, say archeologists. The monument is 600ft wide and 90ft high and has been dated to at least 8000BC. The oldest pyramid in Egypt, the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, was constructed more than 5,000 years later. The structure off Yonaguni, a small island southwest of Okinawa, was first discovered 75ft underwater by scuba divers 10 years ago and locals believed it was a natural phenomenon. Professor Masaki Kimura, a geologist at Ryukyu University in Okinawa, was the first scientist to investigate the site and has concluded that the mysterious five-layer structure was man-made. "The object has not been manufactured by nature. If that had been the case, one would expect debris from erosion to have collected around the site, but there are no rock fragments there," he said. The discovery of what appears to be a road surrounding the building was further evidence that the structure was made by humans, he added. Robert Schoch, professor of geology at Boston University, dived at the site last month. "It basically looks like a series of huge steps, each about a metre high. Essentially, it's a cliff face like the side of a stepped pyramid. It's a very interesting structure," he said. "It's possible that natural water erosion combined with the process of cracked rocks splitting created such a structure, but I haven't come across such processes creating a structure as sharp as this." New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Neal Cohen told a news conference that scientists had confirmed that the West Nile virus caused the death of a 79-year-old woman in New York City on September 11. Four people are now confirmed to have died in New York City and a fifth in Westchester County north of the city. Cohen said that he had no information about a reported death in Toronto, where health officials said that a man who had visited New York earlier this month died Saturday, possibly from the disease. In Atlanta, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the virus had also infected birds and mosquitoes in Connecticut. Scientists have not been able to explain how the West Nile virus reached the United States. As reported on Reuters Health, the outbreak, previously believed to be St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE), came to the attention of New York City health officials in August and prompted authorities to spray the entire city with insecticide in early September in an attempt to kill off mosquitoes. The CDC said that it would spearhead a door-to-door study this weekend in the borough of Queens, where the majority of cases have been diagnosed, to find out more about how the virus took hold. "Blood samples will be tested for antibodies to the virus," Dr. Ned Hayes, a CDC epidemiologist and coordinator of the study, said at the news conference. "We hope to get a better understanding of the symptoms of West Nile virus, as well as possible risk factors for infection." Cohen said that 31 cases of the virus had been confirmed in New York, up from 25 two days ago. He noted that 6 individuals were still hospitalized. Health officials said that the CDC was testing more than 1,000 dead birds, mostly crows, from New York and surrounding states to determine the extent of disease transmission. In New Jersey, health officials said that that they had established surveillance programs for mosquitoes in all counties. Health officials in the state's most populated county, Bergen County, with 860,000 people, said that they had sent two or three dozen dead crows to the CDC for testing for the West Nile virus. "We have been on an extra heightened alert because of our close proximity to New York," said Thomas Breslin, spokesman for New Jersey Department of Health. I don't know if I came to the Richard Thompson concert along the Mississippi riverfront this past weekend to help with closure over Jim Keith's death, but these words went a long way in that direction. Jim may have died pursuing the pregnancy angle of the Princess Diana story, and Thompson - a folk rock legend, founder of Fairport Convention, revered for his words - is a particularly smart-ass limey. He mugged a Woody Guthrie bit, singing, "This land is your land, this land is your land, this land is your land..." Thompson is also a Sufi mystic, and the sources of Jim's final column for Nitro News about Diana were Sufi. Coincidences, of course, but I confess a sentimental attachment to coincidences, and a more than unconscious desire to fit my experience over the death of Jim Keith into an understandable pattern. He's gone, and all that's left are his books, which for the fortunate reader, provide a perspective on history, on conspiracy, on what's happening right now and in the future, as rare and unique as the '52 Vincent in the Thompson song. I co-authored the Octopus with Jim Keith, and have now agreed to resume his column exclusively in Nitro News, in part as defiance against the Octopus, if that vicious beast had anything to with it. In this regard, I would like to repeat the part of the Keith column that rumor suggests led to him being offed: "In 1998, one of my Sufi contacts, who chooses to remain anonymous, travelled to London to participate in Dhikr, a remembrance of Allah. This ritual was attended by both Sufis and orthodox Muslims. My contact reports that while participating in this ceremony, he met Dodi Fayed's personal physician, a man who is a Muslim, but is not a Sufi. In private conversation, the physician told him that Diana and Dodi Fayed had planned on getting married, and that he had personally examined her and determined that she was pregnant." There, Octopus. Come after me. I don't have the name of the physician, but if it is with Jim's research and if it comes into my hands, I'll out him right away. That's what we did with Danny Casolaro's research, taking everything that was left and finishing his book. It has become a relay race of conspiracy writers, trying to get out the truth about this nasty transglobal monster before it takes us down. Maybe it's a monster of our imagining. Maybe Jim died of just a blood clot, although the anecdotal information I've accumulated suggests this is very rare. In lieu of a real investigation (still needed, although I was unsuccessful in raising money to fly to Reno for the purpose), we can only guess. In any event, I will not go quietly, and Jim cannot pass through this life without those questions being asked and pursued as best as possible. Readers unfamiliar with my work should know that I travel and lecture widely, appear regularly on radio and TV throughout the country, and I publish the conspiracy magazine Steamshovel Press. Jim parked his '52 Vincent at the Steamshovel offices on occasion, and it's still being used for the car pool. The Steamshovel take on Diana has been that she was collateral damage in an aerospace espionage hit against Dodi Fayed for the sake of the Al Yamama contract umbrella. The Saudis buy substandard military aircraft with loans from Britain that cover far more than the cost. Mohamed Al-Fayed posed a threat to this arrangement, particularly with his support of Tony Blair, and he was sent a message about it via the killing of his son. The consequent death of Diana, of course, served many ancillary purposes of the British Royals, including its racist concerns over the pregnancy. One suspected architect of the Dodi Fayed hit is his uncle, Adnan Khashoggi, who spent much of his career developing the Al Yamama contracts. Danny Casolaro was investigating him on the very day he (Casolaro) was found dead. Mohamed Al-Fayed remains resolute in his determination to find out what really happened to his son. In a recent BBC interview, primarily intended to goad him into making inflammatory statements about the Royals, he made these interesting remarks: "Al-Fayed: I hate nobody. I just want to find justice. BBC: But you have contempt for the Establishment, they have refused you British citizenship. Al-Fayed: I don't care about that, it is not important to me. I have ministered to soldiers,guerrillas and terrorists on all sides of the wars in Angola, South West Africa/Nambia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. I have witnessed the persecution of the church by Marxist regimes, atrocities by terrorists and I have see the results of war, counseling both the victims and the combatants. As a theological student, I tackled the controversial subject of war and the Christian - from both sides. I have been both a convinced pacifist and an active soldier. I have also sought, as a missionary, to apply the teachings of the Bible to the realities around me. I have walked amongst the unburied corpses of the killing fields of Mozambique and I've cradled in my hands the dead and dying. I've walked through devastated towns in Angola, where not a living being remained - only wrecked houses, decomposing corpses and revolutionary slogans. As a missionary, I've ridden through an ambush on my motorbike scrambler, preached under mortar fire, witnessed at ambush sites, shown Christian films to terrorists, been arrested and imprisoned, been led handcuffed and blindfolded through the streets of Livingstone and Luska, escorted to prison in Maputo in a Soviet Mi 8 Hip helicopter and come under fire on many occasions. Most of all, as a Bible reading, Bible-believing Christian I have spent days, nights, weeks, months and years agonizing, praying and studying over this subject of War and the Christian. What is the Christian response to war? Should a Christian be involved in the active military defense of his country? Is it ever permissible to take the life of another? Is pacifism the answer to violence? THE CHANGING FACE OF WARFARE There was a time in warfare when the men at arms fought the opposing army on a pre-arranged battlefield. Conflicts between nations were settled by soldiers on the field of battle - and civilians, especially women and children, were kept out of the firing line. For centuries a code of honor precluded the endangering of innocent lives. Soldiers fought openly - in uniform - against armed and uniformed foes. Non-combatants were respected. Women and children were protected. At times conflicts were limited to two opposing champions - such as David and Goliath - deciding the fate of their nations in honourable hand to hand combat. Their respective armies were bound to respect the outcome of such duels. In the Middle Ages in Europe such practices became commonplace with knights fighting for their cause and country according to a set code of conduct. In modern times, however, warfare has deteriorated dramatically. More and more civilians have been caught in the crossfire as mobile total warfare has devastated whole towns and villages. This century began with scorched earth tactics and concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer war. The frustrated British army resorted to burning down the Boer farm homes, the destruction of their crops and the detaining of the Boer women and children in concentration camps. This marked a new low in battlefield standards. Unable to win by conventional warfare the British Empire resorted to what was in effect terrorism. They targeted the civilian homes and the women and children who, until then, had been respected and protected. During the Second World War, whole cities were targeted for mass bombings. A thousand bomber aircraft would fill the skies and rain death and destruction upon the cities of Europe. Instead of targeting legitimate military targets at he front, these aircraft were used to massacre hundreds of thousands of women and children at home. Since that terrible war, the face of battle has changed. Now civilians are no longer isolated from the cruel effects of war. No longer are civilians merely endangered by the crossfire of conflict. Now women and children seem to be the main targets of the enemy. Those who place landmines in dirt roads know that they have more chance of killing unarmed civilians than anyone else. By placing bombs in restaurants and shopping centers terrorists are targeting our wives and our children. Those cowards who throw petrol bombs or handgrenades into homes at night are wanting to murder the innocent. And now we even see terrorists bursting into church services and murdering Christians while they worship God. Such people are not only enemies of society, they are enemies of God. To such people God's Word declares: "Surely God will crush the heads of His enemies, the skulls of those who go in their sins." Had they not joined the Nazi movement in order to be free from responsibility? = Nuclear Accidents Japan's Reactor Said to be Under Control Ummm, maybe you should take a shower anyway. Japan early today appeared to have brought its nuclear crisis under control, after halting the accidental chain reaction at a uranium processing plant near Tokyo. In the most serious nuclear accident in the country's history, 27 people were taken to hospital, three of them seriously ill, as radiation leaked from the plant. Radiation around the plant near Tokaimura, 140km north-east of the capital, was reported to be up to 20,000 times normal levels during the night, but later fell sharply. Residents within a 10km radius - about 313,000 people - were told to stay in their homes. Those living within a 350-metre radius of the plant were evacuated. A 3km radius was closed to traffic, and people caught in the light drizzle falling in the area were told to shower immediately as the rain could be radioactive. The Vienna-based International Atomic Agency said the leak appeared extremely serious. The apparent end to the crisis came after an emergency night-time operation, in which employees went into the plant to remove cooling water, which was helping to feed the nuclear reaction. Earlier reports had suggested the attempt was only partially successful because the workers - employees of JCO, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Metal Mining - had been able to spend only minutes at a time inside the building to keep down their exposure to radiation. The accident occurred at a JCO testing facility at 10.35am yesterday. JCO officials said an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction seemed to have occurred when workers mixed 16kg of uranium oxide - instead of the normal 2.4kg - with nitrate solution and transferred it to a precipitation tank. Experts subsequently worked to remove the nitrate water from the cooling equipment placed around the tank to suppress further nuclear fission reactions. The accident is a blow to the already tarnished reputation of Japan's nuclear industry, which supplies about a third of all Japanese electricity needs. The government at one stage asked US forces stationed in Japan for assistance. Japan's Defence Agency said the Americans initially declined, explaining they did not have equipment to deal with such an accident. But President Bill Clinton later said the US would co-operate with the Japanese authorities. Bill Richardson, US energy secretary, said the US and Russia had formed a team of experts to assist. As the crisis mounted yesterday Keizo Obuchi, the prime minister, set up an emergency taskforce and called off a cabinet reshuffle scheduled for today. Considering the gravity of the claim and my subsequent serious doubts, I feel I need to taken down my webpage. I believe that several central features of that theory may have other explanations and the location of the concrete room in my initial graphic may be inaccurate. The circular hole is extremely odd and it's clearly indicative of a blast, however: 1) There was intense fire inside the room, even after the fire, it got so hot inside that, according to Gordon Novel, glass was melted. Video taken by Ken Fawcett, shown to me a few years ago by Carol Valentine, showed fire raging out of the doorway some- time after the whole Center had burned down. It occurs to me that if a hole had been made by some means, the downward bending of the rebar could be a result of the rebar starting to melt downward. This of course does not explain how there is a circular hole in the roof, but I now understand that the Davidians may have had some explosives, of course it may also have been the government. 2) I believe that I misplaced the concrete room on my lead graphic. It is not easy to estimate the location of something where it is not seen by judging from other images. I worked hard but still feel short I believe. Ideally, a 3D program should be used. The difference though slight is significant because there was a big propane tank behind the concrete room which may have vented off its contents. However, a lawyer on the legal team informed me that a small cap was missing from the tank in the photos that prove it was not ripped open. Yesterday I learned that such tanks, when overheated, do not explode, instead a safety value pops off and a jet of gas shoots out of an escape valve. This could easy explain both the fireball and why the tank was not ruptured. 4) The damage to the ceiling resulting in the falling down of its interior surface could be the result of extreme heat. 5) The downward smashed freezer is more likely a result of its buckling due to extreme heat. Notice that the panels have rippling damage, and with melted glass on the inside too, the metal was near melt down and could begin to buckle. I'm persuaded that the arrow of the force vectors coming through the hole would probably not strike at the necessary angle to push the top of the freezer down. The physicist I was in touch with said: "Take your fist and hit a covered empty shoebox on the top side forcefully, and you will see the exact same effect [as we see on the freezer]." But the problem is that in that example, your fist is directly overhead, but the hole is NOT! 6) Notice the circular array of holes on the forward panel of the freezer. Very odd! The physicist I was in touch with, who request anonymity and who initiated contact with me, said that the oval shape of those holes "proves" that they came from a angle above. However, I just realize after tracing the holes the obviously fact that they are oval ONLY due to our angle of view, if we change our angle of view, they would be circles, and therefore the "proof" of being propelled from above vanishes... proof = poof. That circular array of holes is very odd, and I don't mean to say a bomb did not make them, but I don't think they came from the hole, and that assumption carried a lot of the weight of the case that a lethal blast ripped through a hole in the ceiling. Needless to say I'm very embarrassed to have declared proof of a bomb. Almost everyone who read my webpage agreed with me, attesting to the immediate appearance of such proof. Gov. Jesse Ventura is expected to write to federal drug authorities today outlining his plan for implementing pro-hemp state legislation enacted last spring. His plan, however, calls for cooperation from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which wields full authority over controlled substances and has strongly opposed reviving the U.S. hemp industry. Meanwhile, fierce debate continues over whether hemp offers enough commercial potential to justify the costly security controls likely to be imposed on its cultivation. Controls are in store because DEA officials and hemp enthusiast agree on one thing: Food- and-fiber-producing hemp and smokable marijuana are nearly indistinguishable varieties of the same Cannabis plant, differing only in their content of the psychoactive ingredient tetrahyrocannabinol (THC). Venturas letter is expected to propose that would-be hemp farmers apply for permits through the state Board of Pharmacy and the DEA. But the rules for commercial hemp cultivation in Minnesota would be set by the DEA, which so far has had one simple rule: Dont do it. The policy has not been changed, Tom McCormick, head of the DEAs Minneapolis office, said Wednesday. But we are seriously looking at it right now. The decision will be coming out of Washington. It could come in less than a year, he said. The governments review has been accelerated by growing interest in hemp production. Pro-hemp laws were enacted this year in Minnesota, Hawaii, Nebraska and North Dakota. North Dakota, in fact, is farther along the hemp trail than Minnesota, having reclassified hemp as an oilseed crop. It also has enacted provisions for growing and processing hemp. But even if the DEA allows hemp crops, its unclear how profitable they may be. Some critics raise specters of the Jerusalem artichoke scam that ravaged rural Minnesota in the 1980s. There may well be zero market for this stuff, said Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner Charlie Weaver, who has consulted with state trade and agriculture officials to shape Venturas hemp policy. But we have an obligation to be helpful to those folks who are interested. Hemp seeds produce an oil that can be used to make tofu, butter, cheese, salad oils and other foods. Hemp fiber can be used to make clothing, ropes, paper, particle-board products and more. But even Hemp John Birrenbach of St. Paul, an avowed marijuana advocate, said, There are marketing and processing problems. In addition, mandatory security measures probably would cut deeply into producers profits. Send reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] DETROIT, Michigan, September 30, 1999 (ENS) - The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has seized a tractor trailer of sterilized Canadian hemp seed on its way to a large U.S. company that has been selling hemp birdseed blends legally for years. Following the August 9 seizure, U.S. Customs and the DEA demanded that Kenex, Canada's largest producer and processor of industrial hemp products, recall previous shipments of other hemp products such as oil, granola bars, horse bedding and animal feed. Kenex is based in Paincourt, Ontario, 60 miles from Detroit. U.S. Customs is threatening nearly $500,000 in fines against Kenex if the recalled products are not redelivered to Detroit Customs in the next few days. These fines are in addition to the fines and possible criminal charges that may be laid in relation to the bird seed load itself. A 30 day extension request to clarify the situation was denied by U.S. Customs. The agencies have taken these actions even though all of the products are exempt under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act, and many have been sold in the United States for 60 years. There has never a time when sterilized hemp seed or oil or meal was illegal. The DEA, after repeated requests, refuses to provide Kenex with any legal basis for the confiscation. Kenex's president, Jean Laprise says, "Kenex, along with many other U.S. companies are suffering irreparable damage due to the illegal actions taken by the DEA and U.S. Customs. It seems the DEA could be spending the U.S. taxpayer's drug war money in better ways than chasing after bird seed and horse bedding." Laprise says, "All the proper documentation has been supplied to Customs in the past in accordance with our custom broker's instructions. Kenex has always acted in good faith and has never violated any U.S. laws. Our legal counsel has advised us that the DEA and U.S. Customs are acting in clear violation of U.S. laws as well as NAFTA." Industrial hemp has no drug qualities and is grown in 32 countries including Canada, France, Germany, and England. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), mentions hemp as a strategic commodity. Currently, French and German hempseed products are still entering the United States under the same tariff code without problems. Kenex is in the process of preparing the paperwork to file a complaint under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Hemp foods are typically made from sterilized seed like that seized from Kenex. It is impossible for the seed to ever contain any tetra hydro cannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component in marijuana, which is produced in the flowering tops of the female Cannabis Sativa L. plant. The THC content in the fiber, leaf or flower of the industrial hemp plant is less than one percent. By contrast, the THC content of the Cannabis Sativa bred for marijuana production is around 10 percent. Played like musical chairs, the game instructs the first group to gather natural resources whenever the music stops. Meanwhile, new children are "born", adding to the fast-growing "population" consuming the dwindling resources. Guess what happens. The world runs out of resources. Like most environmental classroom exercises, the game sounds logical but distorts reality. Designed to change attitudes, it ignores scientific facts, social statistics, and renewable resources.2 Yet, what it does is far more dangerous than what it omits: it gives children an alarming view of an imagined reality. They feel the exaggerated dangers. They agree to solve the problem. To make sure the children understand that America is the villain of the world, they discuss the main message: "The U.S.A. uses over 20% of the world's resources. . . How do the others feel toward the U.S.A. in this game?" Other questions prod the children toward these "right" conclusions: America's demand for resources deprives poorer nations of their equal share. Greedy nations must reduce consumption, block population growth, and make whatever sacrifices needed for common good and planetary healing. Genuine concern for the environment is needful, for ecological abuses do destroy farm land, sea life, forests, and other resources-especially outside the Western word. But since most environmental problems are local or regional, they fail to serve the political purposes of global leaders who want nothing less than global governance. Rousing whole nations to action, and inspiring a unified call for planetary management requires global disasters like ozone holes3 and rising ocean levels, not merely dying lakes and rivers. It said something about the fed govt and had what looked like a legal reference (the driver claims to know nothing about legal issues, but he thought it was a reference to a law or an Executive Order or something). There were several hundred boxes of these signs. The driver doesn't know what Wal-Mart has to do with the signs. But he did state that Wal-Mart sometimes hires out space on their trucks if space is available. I might suggest that maybe the govt was using Wal-Mart trucks to keep a low profile. Anyway, the info came to me by way of a long route. But the sources are "innocent bystanders" with no history of right-wing reactionary politics. The driver was married to a woman who was related to Brandon's wife. He swears the info is accurate and that he spoke with the driver himself to confirm what was passed between the respective wives. The driver claims there were hundreds of boxes, each one with at least a hundred large signs declaring martial law. I thought this was worth passing along. Especially since the fed govt is telling us (Wednesday issue of USA Today and today's press releases) that we have nothing to fear. Converting from one system of units to another has been the downfall of countless students of science. Now we learn that confusion over units also spelled doom for the Mars Climate Orbiter. NASA is scurrying to figure out how the error could have gone undetected, but the most shocking revelation is that the agency that has come to symbolize high-technology has not fully converted to metric. A spokesman at NIST seemed unconcerned by the glacial progress of the metric conversion initiative. Metrification, he explained, will come gradually with usage as the younger generation is exposed to it. 2. MISTAKE TWO: JAPANESE WORKERS ADD TOO MUCH URANIUM. This is reported to be the world's 60th criticality accident since 1945. The problem occurred at a uranium processing plant when too much uranium was added to a mixing tank. The off-site risk appears to be small, but the incident reawakens public concern just as there were signs that the moribund nuclear power industry in the US might still have a pulse. It may be significant that in all the news stories about the accident, the amount of uranium involved was given in pounds rather than kilograms. 3. MISTAKE THREE: DEMOCRATS THREATEN TO LAUNCH BIG PUSH ON CTBT. Yesterday, Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) called their bluff, scheduling an Oct. 8 vote on the test ban treaty, without benefit of hearings and after only ten hours of debate. It was seen as a test of party loyalty, and influential Sen. John Warner (R-VA), who was believed to be leaning toward the treaty, announced that he now planned to vote against it. Under those circumstances it would be unlikely that the treaty would get the needed 67 votes. That set off a flurry of negotiating. The latest word is that there is an agreement to put off the vote until Oct. 18. 4. MISTAKE FOUR: WHAT'S NEW GOOFS IN FREE ELECTRICITY STORY. We apologize to the Wall Street Journal. WN reported that the WSJ had carried a full-page ad on Sep 17 for a demonstration of free- electricity (WN 24 Sept 99). Wrong! The ad was actually carried by USA Today, although the WSJ carried such an ad two years ago (WN 18 Jul 97). Dennis Lee, CEO of Better World Technologies, has now launched his 45 city tour. At a meeting in Columbus, Ohio Lee urged people to sign up to get a free electricity machine installed in their homes and get disconnected from the grid before the Y2K crisis. He explained that the government's plan is to deliberately create a crisis so "they can declare martial law and take your guns away." He said their ad had gotten the attention of "just about every attorney general in the country." He wouldn't actually demonstrate the free electricity technology. "If you show a free electricity machine," he explained, "they will shut you down." He said he did that in 1988 and they put him jail. "I'm doing this for one reason only--God said 'do it.'" Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura spent most of yesterday and today in crisis mode, as aides tried to defuse the growing controversy over the remarks the colorful Reform Party figure made in an interview with Playboy Magazine. Covering a wide range of provocative topics, Ventura held forth on issues such as drug legalization, prostitution, and the role of religion in human culture. He told Playboy that that in his opinion, organized religion was "a sham and a crutch for the weak minded. Other opinions reinforced what Ventura had written in his biography, "I Ain't Got Time to Bleed," where he acknowledge smoking marijuana, engaging the services of a prostitute and drinking. Now, Ventura is starting to pay a price for his forthrightness -- and it may be high. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights took time out from its campaign to close a controversial art exhibit in New York to blast the free thinking governor, saying that he "has now proven himself to be Jesse 'The Bigot' Ventura." A League broadside added, "Liberty shorn of its religious underpinnings is the real sham, as the Founders and most students of freedom have long understood. But according to the erudite Mr. Ventura, they all got it wrong..." "What Ventura is saying is that organized religion has an intrusive, and therefore deleterious, effect on American society," continued the League press release. "To that end, it is only logical that he might seek to check its influence. This bears watching as that is the position of an anti-religious bigot..." Others took the colorful wrestler-turned-politician to task as well. Reform Party Chairman Russell Verney told the Washington Post that he was "disgusted and outraged" by the Ventura interview. Only Minnesota Party Chair Rick McCluhan opined that any judgments should wait until people have read the alleged quotes in the context of the full article. The Playboy interview will arrive at news stands on Monday. In related developments: * Ventura has reportedly written to religious leaders explaining his remarks on faith. The Post notes that he cites instances of "so-called religious leaders zealously marketing their beliefs," by inducing poor people to give "their last dollar for a baptism." * According to the Dallas Morning News, Ventura attempted to "clarify" his remarks on religion, and told Associated Press that "he doesn't need it but doesn't condemn those who do, including his wife." The News gives an expanded version of Ventura's letter to religious officials. "I witnessed many instances of so-called religious leaders zealously marketing their beliefs to people too uneducated to comprehend what they were talking about and too poor to afford the money they were being asked to hand over." Coppin 01-01-99 A few decades ago, a friend and I were sitting around a university campus and speculating on who was really pulling the world's strings from behind the scenes. You will no doubt find such typical "bull session" discussions going on today. Most are forgotten almost immediately. However, this one prompted me to devote literally years of spare research time to it and continues to this day. Along the way I have stumbled across the infamous Bilderberger Group (and others even less savory!), learned a great deal about international finance and developed a network of sources who were much more talented and energetic than I ever would be. I read Chomsky and learned to look at media reports of current events with a jaded eye. I studied economic theory in hopes of understanding the real meaning of Breton Woods. In short, I learned enough to know that something was economically rotten... but try as I might, I could never put my finger on WHERE all the money was going. Here in Canada, a fellow named Mel Hurtig painted a picture of governments playing a cynical game of patching small leaks in the front door while BILLIONS of dollars were gushing out the back. I knew he was right. But it was old news- I knew about the U.S. Fed. Reserve scam and the banks and while their thefts have been astronomical, it still didn't account for anywhere near all the money that should have been available. I KNEW something was not adding up in the current models, but I was seeking TRILLIONS of dollars and not merely billions. :-) Recently, I stumbled on the answer to my decades long quest in the form of an interview with Walter Burien. Like virtually everyone else who has heard or read the truth, I was stunned! Burien pointed to the irrefutable proof that literally trillions of dollars had been, and continues to be, stolen from US citizens, hidden right under their noses, and there was a conspiracy of silence that helped ensure that general public was none the wiser. For the last LAST 6 MONTHS! Walter Burien has been circumventing the major media blackout and blowing the lid off something called COMPREHENSIVE ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORTS. Simply put- CAFRs are the equivalent of the infamous double set of books... kept by municipal, state and federal governments. That's right, folks. Your own governments are stealing you blind and dutifully keeping a hidden set of books that prove it. The public gets to see the books that show that most governments are operating at or near fiscal bankruptcy. The insiders and the CEOs of every major newspaper and television network get to see the REAL books. Every year. Voter registration permit Then it occurred to me to think of the other permits that I had at home that are critical to my daily existence. 1. Business license (to be in business for myself) 2. National ID Card Is Now Federal Law by Cyndee Parker In September of 1996, President Clinton signed into law, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. Buried at approximately page 650 of the new national Defense Bill, also known as Public Law 104-208, Part B, Title IV, the American public was given a national ID card. With no fanfare, no publicity and no scrutiny, the bill easily avoided the watchful eyes of even its most aggressive opponents. The Coalition to Repeal the Fingerprints Law, a Georgia grassroots movement trying to rid the state of the new requirement to give digital fingerprints in order to obtain a state ID or driver's license, recently discovered the national ID tie. The group found that the national law not only mandates a national ID card, but found how it is to be used. In Section 401-403, pilot programs have been initiated by the U.S. Attorney General, one of which is the "Machine Readable Document Pilot Program." In this particular program, employers would have to "procure" a document reader linked to the federal government's Social Security Administration in order to have the potential employee swipe their new driver's license/national ID card through the reader. Then, it would be up to the federal government to either approve or disapprove the applicant for employment.
