Why females should beware e-males

THE style of an e-mail gives away the writer’s gender, according to a
new study. Just as men and women differ in the way that they
communicate face to face, they also communicate differently on the
Internet, researchers in New Zealand say.

E-mails from women workers are more likely to contain questions and
apologies than those written by men, the researchers say. Women tend
to be complimentary to colleagues in their e-mails and modest about
their own abilities. Men are much more assertive. They tend to convey
opinions rather than to seek them and to insult people in a way that
they might not dare if face to face.

The study is supported by previous research on how men and women take
part in chatrooms — online discussions — on the Internet. They found
that the style of writing and the things they talked about were
different.

Men are more likely to swap harsh personal insults on the Net, a
practice known as flaming.

Tamar Murachver, co-author of the study, said that although e-mails
are written, they are sent and received so quickly that they mirror
the interactivity of conversation.

The researchers, from the University of Otago, conducted experiments
in which male and female undergraduates were asked to send e-mails to
each other in which they did not disclose their gender.

The researchers found they could distinguish the e-mails of the men
and women simply by the features that they used. Women used phrases
such as “your poem was good” and “sorry I haven’t written”. The men
conveyed opinions and tended to write much more than the women.

Walid (not his real name) has been in jail since May 11, when police
raided a nightclub at which he had been partying the night away. After
being hauled into waiting trucks, Walid and 53 other young Egyptian men
were taken into custody, where they have languished ever since.

Friends who have visited him say that although he looks well, he no longer
smiles. This is not surprising since Walid has very little to smile about.

The police raid was an operation against those taking part in immoral
acts, which means homosexuality. The nightclub, which takes up a floor of
a boat on the Nile, was well known as a gay hangout and it seems that the
police decided to send a signal that this kind of behavior was not going
to be tolerated in Egypt.

Walid has been caught up in this 'unofficial-official message', and the
authorities' action has left him and his family with a very public
problem. He had not told his parents and relatives that he was gay, so the
news that he was in prison for immoral behavior came as a shock.

It doesn't stop there, however. After the newspapers printed the photos
and names of those in custody alongside stories of frantic homosexual
orgies and gay weddings, Walid's family, like the families of all the
other men, were doomed to face massive embarrassment and humiliation.

On June 8, Amnesty International, the London-based human rights' group,
expressed its concern that the men are detained purely on the grounds of
their alleged sexual orientation. It went on to add that if this was the
sole basis of their detention Amnesty International would consider them
prisoners of conscience and call for their immediate and unconditional
release.

However, this statement is about the only real support the men in prison
have. Local human rights groups are reluctant to get involved. Skirting
the issue, Secretary General of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights
Hafez Abu Seada told the Middle East Times, This case is not the issue.
The government arrests all sorts of people including regular criminals and
Islamists and they end up in prison for years without charge or
investigation. He went on to add, Everyone arrested has a right to a
defense and to be treated well and not tortured.

The semi-banned Muslim Brotherhood, whose supporters are regularly
imprisoned by the police, is usually quick to accuse the government of
arresting people on trumped-up charges and abusing their rights, but in
this case the group's deputy supreme guide, Mamoun Al Hodeiby, found
himself on the same side as the authorities. He told the Middle East
Times, Homosexuality is a great crime in Islam. If people are caught
doing something like this then it is up to the government to deal with
them.

Following the arrest of the men, sensational stories were provided to the
press that were later contradicted by eyewitnesses. According to the local
press, those arrested had been caught taking part in homosexual group sex
while their faces were painted, and there was also a gay wedding taking
place at the same time. However, foreigners who were also present but
allowed to leave by police, said that the place was a plain nightclub that
happened to have a reputation for attracting a lot of gay men.

However, homosexuality is frowned upon in Egyptian society and the reports
of orgies made many Egyptians following the case less likely to show
concern for the treatment or rights of those arrested.

A 29-year-old accountant from Nasr City said, they must know that they
are not welcome in our society. She added that she supports the arrests
and believes that the foreigners should have also been arrested and that
the arrests would send a clear sign to gays in Egypt and abroad that we
do not like this kind of behavior here.

The local media went on to use Amnesty's position on the issue as a reason
to attack the organization. They force deviancy on Egyptians in the guise
of human rights, complained a headline in the weekly Rose Al Youssef
magazine. The article called the report a joke and went on to explain
how the issue highlighted the differences between the Egyptian and their
points of view.

It [the report] shows the yawning gap in their understanding of our
values, the magazine said. It went on to ask, Why do they want to impose
what they believe on us? It then added, They see homosexuality as a
personal freedom whereas we see it as against our values and an abuse of
our principles.

The article also went on to call into question Amnesty's judgment, How
can anyone believe them after this report? one of the sub-headings asked.
From now on, we have to subject everything published by these kinds of
organizations to the closest scrutiny.

The village El-Khader is located east of Bethlehem adjacent to the
settlement of Ephrat. Despite declarations made by the Israeli
Minister of Defense, Benyamin Ben Eliezer, that Israel will not
expand settlements outside their already constructed areas, at the
beginning of June settlers of Ephrat built up a new outpost
on Jabbel Baten Al-Mawassi (known also as Givat Hatamar).  The
settlers took over 400 dunams (40 acres) of land that belongs to the
residents of the village. This new settlement outpost also prevents
the residents of El-Khader from farming additional lands and
endangers the crops that might dry out.

The settlers have heavy support from the army and police who prevent
the Palestinians from passing through the area and working their
lands in addition to preventing them and their local and
international supporters from demonstrating against this usurption.
On June 20, eight Israeli and International activists were arrested
when demonstrating against the outpost, among them the known French
activist against globalization Jose Bove. In a press conference held
jointly by the Alternative Information Center(AIC), the Palestinian
NGO Network (PINGO) and French civil society organizations in the
American Colony Hotel, in East Jerusalem, on June 21, Mr. Bove stated
that peace is impossible with the continuation of the settlements.

The framework of the cooperation between settlers and the Israeli
security apparatus in El-Khader and elsewhere in the Occupied
Territories is the implementation of a systematic economical terror
against Palestinian farmers in particular, and the Palestinian
population in general. Since the beginning of the Intifada,
Palestinians outside areas controlled  by the Palestinian National
Authority (PNA) have found themselves defenseless from daily attacks
by settlers that included shooting on farmers, setting crops on fire,
preventing farmers from working their land, destruction of
greenhouses etc.

In parallel to the protection given by the state to settlers who
settle on private Palestinian lands and the lack of punishment of
violent actions against Palestinians and their property, pacifist
protest is prohibited to Palestinians and their supporters.

The silent consent for the settlers' economic terror- which prevents
the free economical development of the Palestinian population and
their right to protest against these actions of the State of Israel-
violates Article IIc of the  International Convention on the
Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid (entered into
force 18 July 1976).  According to the Article, Any legislative
measures and other measures calculated to prevent a racial group or
groups from participation in the political, social, economic and
cultural life of the country and the deliberate creation of
conditions preventing the full development of such a group or groups,
in particular by denying to members of a racial group or groups basic
human rights and freedoms, including the right to work, the right to
form recognized trade unions, the right to education, the right to
leave and to return to their country, the right to a nationality, the
right to freedom of movement and residence, the right to freedom of
opinion and expression, and the right to freedom of peaceful assembly
and association;  forms part of an apartheid policy.

The French judge Evelyne Sire-Marine stated in the press conference
held in June 21 that the generalized discriminations against the
Palestinian population imbedded within the state policy is a kind of
apartheid. She concluded that it is very possible that French or
European courts may open procedures against Israelis that have been
involved in torture or violations against international conventions.

Mention immigration to Austrian economists and other free-market economists and you 
will hear a cacophony of opinions that range from completely open the borders to 
completely close the borders. It is hard to imagine a more divisive subject among 
those with libertarian philosophical and economic bents, and it plays out in the 
political arena with strange bedfellows, including folks like Harry Browne and Patrick 
Buchanan, both of whom have widely publicized and differing views.

Added to the mix is an article by Hans-Hermann Hoppe, who applies a private property 
rule to immigration, saying that in an anarcho-capitalist society, legitimate 
immigration can occur only when the lawful owners invite foreigners onto one's 
property. And as one examines the different libertarian opinions on immigration, it 
becomes difficult to find common ground. Thus, I take on this divisive and thankless 
task myself.

Those who prefer open borders say that people are no different than products. If one 
believes in free trade, and the freedom to bring capital over international borders, 
then one should have no problem with labor also passing unmolested from country to 
country. Since labor is a factor of production, it would seem hypocritical to allow 
all other factors to freely cross borders, but then block labor.

The open borders advocates also can easily attack the Patrick Buchanan argument that 
immigration lowers wages for domestic workers. While it may be true in some instances 
that newly arrived immigrant labor indeed can depress wages, the same argument can be 
made for any other factor of production. For example, libertarians do not believe that 
the current sugar import quota program is legitimate just because more sugar imports 
would push down prices of U.S.-grown sugar. In fact, libertarians argue that forcing 
up the price of factors of production, be they labor or commodities, is blatantly 
anti-consumer and ultimately harms the economy.

Furthermore, the presence of immigrants does help ease severe labor shortages in some 
areas of production. Fruit and vegetable prices would be much higher, one can argue, 
if the immigrant workers--both legal and illegal--were suddenly deported and domestic 
workers were left to pick the produce themselves.

Indeed, it is difficult to make an economic argument against open immigration. The 
social and political scene, however, is a different story and many libertarians are 
missing the important point that what happens in the social and political spheres 
matters in every way. It is not difficult to declare that open immigration into the 
United States has the real capacity to ultimately destroy what is left of our free 
market economy and our freedoms themselves.

I write this as the grandchild of immigrants from Sweden and Scotland. My ancestors 
came to this country in search of a better life and they found it. What they did not 
find, however, was a complete cradle-to-grave welfare system as currently exists in 
the United States. While I can say, They came here to work, not to seek handouts, I 
must temper my remarks with the reality that the government did not make such 
handouts available to them. Had there been a welfare system as we have now, I cannot 
say with certainty that my ancestors would not have taken advantage of it.

For all its glorification by the left, the welfare system is nothing more than the 
forced transfer of wealth from taxpayers to those who spend wealth to benefit 
themselves. Our current rule by judges takes the welfare state even further, as court 
after court has ruled that public schools and public and private hospitals must take 
in all comers, including those who might be in this country illegally and have no 
ability or proclivity to pay for the services they receive. Such rulings have severely 
burdened taxpayers of Southern California who voted overwhelmingly to limit public 
services to immigrants in the now-infamous Proposition 187. Of course, the leftist 
media painted those who voted for Prop 187 as vicious racists who approved the measure 
only because of their inordinate hatred of dark-skinned minorities.

Once it becomes apparent to certain groups, ethnic or otherwise, that they can have 
special services and privileges available to them, they will leap to take advantage of 
them. I use the example of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe and their role 
in organized labor. Areas where these immigrants and their descendants live tend to be 
highly unionized, especially in the cities of the Northeast.

Because of their special government-protected status, unions are part of the welfare 
state. Granted, unionized workers are expected to punch a clock, but their benefits 
are gained by the covert (and sometimes overt) threat of violence, all of

It is becoming increasingly clear that conservative fears that the recent
power shift in the Senate would have profound consequences, especially in
judicial appointments, were well-founded.

National Review Online's Byron York reports that Democrats in the Senate
Judiciary Committee are preparing for a series of hearings concerning the
judicial-confirmation process. Don't be fooled. While packaged as
high-minded inquiries, their real purpose is to lay the groundwork for
rejecting judicial nominees on the basis of their conservative ideology
alone.

On June 26, Sen. Charles Schumer, New York Democrat, the new chairman of the
committee responsible for screening federal judicial appointments, will
conduct the first hearing, Should Ideology Matter? Judicial Nominations
2001.
Then next month, new Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy,
Vermont Democrat, will begin hearings on the Rehnquist court, federal
jurisprudence and conservative judicial activism. Hearings on conservative
judicial activism? That's too much.

Mr. York tells us, The Schumer session will establish that it is acceptable
to oppose nominees solely on ideological grounds, and the Leahy hearing will
suggest that Mr. Bush's nominees hold views that are dangerously out of
touch with those of most Americans. How valid are these twin premises?
Let's take a look:

Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution vests power in the president to
appoint federal judges, subject to the Senate's advice and consent. How much
power did the Framers intend to confer upon the Senate over these
appointments?

It is clear that the Senate's power is not coequal with the president's,
because only the president has the power to nominate. The Senate can only
accept or reject his nominees; it cannot substitute nominees of its own. But
on what basis may the Senate refuse to confirm the president's nominees?

Alexander Hamilton, in Federalist No. 76, wrote, To what purpose then
require the cooperation of the Senate? . . . It would be an excellent check
upon the spirit of favoritism in the president, and would tend greatly to
prevent the appointment of unfit characters from state prejudice, from
family connection, from personal attachment, or from a view to popularity.

You see, there's nothing mentioned about partisanship or ideology. The
Framers were trying to avoid cronyism and the appointment of unfit
characters that the president might be tempted to install primarily for
personal or familial reasons.

Even Democrats didn't used to take the absurd position that nominees could
be resisted on the basis of their ideology alone otherwise, for example,
they wouldn't have had to fabricate stories against Clarence Thomas bearing
on his character and fitness.

But that was about a decade ago. Today it's different. The Democratic
leadership is now openly engaged in a war against Republicans, especially
conservative ones. They mean to eradicate this evil known as conservatism,
and the judiciary is a great place to start given their manifest
difficulties at the ballot box. This brings us to consideration of the
second premise.

What about Mr. Leahy's assertion that most of Mr. Bush's nominees hold views
that are dangerously out of touch with those of most Americans? Answer: It
is dangerously out of touch with reality. Also, it's significantly ironic
that Democrats are openly opposing nominees on ideological grounds. They are
the ones who initiated the practice of legislating ideologically based
policy from the bench.

Besides, don't most political commentators agree that presently, at least,
the nation is almost evenly divided along ideological lines? Haven't we all
been hearing about the red states vs. the blue states? The two Americas?

But Mr. Schumer and Mr. Leahy say their opposition is not to conservatives,
but extremists. Yet these two men, much closer to leftist extremism than the
conservative appointees they oppose are to right-wing extremism, obviously
believe that conservatism itself is extreme. Need proof? OK, Mr. Schumer
said, No more of these right-wing judges getting through.

Senate Democrats are not interested in according the president
constitutional deference for judicial appointments. They are determined to
usurp his appointment authority. In the process they will pave the way for
further usurpation by way of the courts' continuing encroachment on the
prerogative of the executive and legislative branches, through liberal
judicial activism.

These Senate hearings are another step in the process of denying President
Bush's legitimacy and authority. The Democrats have telegraphed their
planned offensive. President Bush and Senate Republicans must draw a line in
the sand

Lockerbie was an impossible verdict

The conviction left a disturbing list of unanswered questions

On  January  31,  after  an  eight-month trial, three Scottish judges,
sitting  in  a special court at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands, found a
Libyan  intelligence  officer, Ali Al-Megrahi, guilty of the Lockerbie
bombing  -  Britain's  biggest mass murder - acquitting his colleague,
Khalifa Fhimah.

Two  days  earlier, senior Foreign Office officials briefed a group of
journalists  in London. They painted a picture of a bright new chapter
in  Britain's  relations  with  Colonel  Gadafy's regime. They made it
quite  clear  they  assumed  both  the  Libyans  in  the dock would be
acquitted.

The  FO  officials were not alone. Most independent observers believed
it was impossible for the court to find the prosecution had proved its
case against Megrahi beyond reasonable doubt.

It  was  not  only  the  lack  of hard evidence - something the judges
admitted  in  their  lengthy  judgment.  The case was entwined, if the
judges were right, in a sequence of remarkable coincidences.

Doubts  about  the  prosecution's  case  and  the  judges' verdict are
spelled  out  in  Cover-Up  of  Convenience,  published this week. Two
journalists, John Ashton and Ian Ferguson, examine in detail what Paul
Foot  has  already succinctly written in Private Eye's special report,
Lockerbie, The Flight from Justice.

For  more  than  a  year, western intelligence agencies pointed to the
Popular  Front  for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command, led
by  Ahmed  Jibril.  It  is  not hard to see why. Two months before the
Lockerbie disaster, German police arrested members of the PFLP-GC near
Frankfurt  where, according to the prosecution, the bag containing the
bomb was placed on the Pan Am airliner.

Among   those  arrested  was  Marwan  Khreesat,  who  was  found  with
explosives  and  a  Toshiba cassette player similar to the one said to
have  contained the bomb. Khreesat was released. It was later revealed
he was a Jordanian double agent.

The  Jordanians did not allow him to appear as a witness at the trial.
Instead, he was interviewed by an FBI agent, Edward Marshman. Marshman
described  how Khreesat told him how he infiltrated the PFLP-GC, how a
second  Toshiba  bomb  had  gone  missing, and about his contacts with
another  member  of Jibril's group, Abu Elias, said to be an expert in
airline security.

Elias  is mentioned in a report written by Mobdi Goben, another member
of  the  PFLP-GC,  shortly before he died. The Goben memorandum claims
Elias  planted  the  bomb  in the luggage of Khalid Jaafar, a Lebanese
Americanpassengerallegedlyinvolved   in   a   CIA-approved
heroin-smuggling  operation. The luggage used for these operations, it
is claimed, bypassed normal security screening.

The prosecution asked a foreign government, believed to be Syria, to
hand  over information about Goben's allegations. Syria refused. Syria
was central to the original explanation. This was that the bombing was
funded  by  Iran  in  retaliation for the mistaken shooting down of an
Iranian  airliner  by an American warship, the USS Vincennes, over the
Persian Gulf in July 1988.



There  is a widespread view that the US and Britain changed their tack
when they badly needed Syria's support, and Iran's quiescence, for the
Gulf  war  after  the  Iraqi  invasion  of  Kuwait  in 1990. They thus
fingered  the  two  Libyans,  insisting  they  placed  the  bomb in an
unaccompanied bag at Malta's Luqa airport, where it was transferred to
the  Pan  Am  plane  at Frankfurt. An earlier Palestinian suspect, Abu
Talb, had also visited Malta. He was later held in Sweden on terrorist
charges and identified by the British as a prime suspect.

You  don't  have to look for conspiracies - maybe Jaafar's presence on
the  plane  has  an  entirely  innocent  explanation - to question the
prosecution's  version  of  events.  US authorities issued a series of
specific  warnings  about  a  bomb threat before Lockerbie. These, and
intelligence  reports  implicating Iran, were dismissed as speculative
or hoaxes.

The  evidence  of  Tony  Gauci,  the  Maltese shop owner was extremely
shaky.  He was uncertain about dates and the weather that day. He told
the  police  the purchaser was six foot or more and over 50. Megrahi
was five foot eight inches and 37 at the time.

According  to Ashton and Ferguson, replica MST-13 timers - implicating
Megrahi  but  only  presented  as  evidence  after a long delay - were
manufactured  by  the  CIA  but that information was not passed to the
defence. The evidence of Abdul Giaka, a Libyan who defected to the CIA
and  star prosecution witness, was described by the judges as at

That land was annexed by the King of Jordan at the time of partition. After
WWII. Then they lost it to the Israelis in the Six Day War. The Resolution 242
made no difference when the Jordanians ignored it and it makes no difference
anywhere else in the world.


 This law was basically created after the defeat of Nazi Germany, but before
 the creation of the nation of Israel. Basically it was constructed so that no
 one nation could conquer another and displace the population (as Nazi Germany
 did with Poland, France etc.)

And which nation on the planet gives a shit about UN laws? Turkey? Syria?
The USA and Western Europe attacking Yugoslavia? Britain attacking the

One of our Founding Fathers was among the first Americans to
articulate the crisis of democracy, as contemporary
establishment eggheads term it.

What's the crisis? In the 1787 debates over the federal
Constitution, James Madison pointed out how In England, at this
day, if elections were open to all classes of people, the property
of landed proprietors would be insecure. An agrarian law would
soon take place.

To fend off such a crisis, our government ought to secure the

only limited, top-down forms of democratic change that did not
risk upsetting the traditional structures of power with which the
United States has long been allied.

The aim of U.S. planners, Carothers explained, was to maintain
the basic order of...quite undemocratic societies and avoid
populist-based change (that could upset) established economic and
political orders.

But it's the rise, fall and rise of another Reagan administration
official that ought to interest any patriotic, democracy-loving
American. The retired Lt. Col. Oliver North is apparently getting
ready to launch a campaign for Congress in Virginia.

Gov. James Gilmore of Virginia and chairman of the Republican
National Committee told the Washington Times last week: Ollie
would be a fantastic candidate. He can raise money like few other
people, he has star quality and people love him. Can't argue with
that. Ollie is good at raising money like few other people.

It was in 1986 when the nation learned that not only was North
instrumental in illegally selling arms to Iran in exchange for
freeing U.S. hostages, North used the artificially inflated
profits of the weapons sales to finance an illegal covert
operation in Nicaragua.

The Iran-Contra scandal gave us a glimpse into the Madisonian
contempt for democracy the Reagan administration harbored and
nourished.

Almost lost in the clamor was the 'fixer' role North played along
the way - looking after (then-CIA director) Bill Casey's 'friends'
on the American domestic front, writes David Harris in Shooting
the Moon, probably the best book written by an investigative
journalist on the U.S. relationship with the former head of the
Panama Defense Force, Manuel Noriega.

By (North's) own account, in the summer of 1986, alone, Casey's
fixer succeeded in getting a Miami criminal investigation into
contra gun-running slowed to a crawl and a congressional inquiry
into contra drug-smuggling derailed indefinitely, Harris writes.

One situation that needed fixing involved Noriega. Casey was
conducting a secret war against the poor in Latin America under
the guise of rolling-back communism. Noriega was offering his
services to help fight the Sandanistas in clandestine defiance of
a congressional mandate not to.

When the New York Times published a scathing article detailing
Noriega's criminal record, the Panamanian general asked Ollie for
advice.

North, demonstrating virtually no feeling at all for where his
'friend' was coming from, simply referred him to a public
relations firm that North had used for his own contra fund-raising
efforts, Harris reports.

At a meeting in a London hotel, North told Noriega that in return
for his pro-contra assistance, there will be a clean slate; we'll
forget about all the bad stuff we've heard. We'll just forget
about it.

Of course, when Casey died and the whole Iran-Contra scandal
prevented Noriega's friends from helping him, the Panamanian
general went to jail and North was pardoned.

North then became a radio talk show host for WWRC, 980 AM. The
show's PR gimmick was It's no lie - a shred of truth from
Washington - your dial is set to true North.

If North doesn't get elected, he ought to at least be

Which means that the information you describe below is Palestinian

 The fact remains that Ariel Sharon did not do enough to stop people that he
 was in charge of being killed.  On the contrary the IDF threw flares all
 through the night to help light the way for the phalange.

If you did read part 2, then you would have information from an actual
participant at a very high level. Not from Palestinians who are disregarding
the killers in order to win political points in their current political
contest with Israel and Sharon.

Read again why why the Israelis threw up flares. The conclusion you came to
was the opposite of what the eyewitness and perpetrator says. Since you weren't
actually there, you make your choice of what is real and what is not
based on your first exposure which is all based on Palestinian disinformation.


 There is substantial evidence to call for Sharon to be tried in front of an
 International court.  As was said on the BBC programme.


Maybe yes, and maybe no. But there is MORE evidence to try the actual
killers. My problem with you is that you are at best backing the wrong horse.
Do you really want to bring the massacre to a just conclusion or is it
really about something else.

Sabra and Shatila are being used as a weapon to punish Sharon for invading
Lebanon and throwing out the PLO. The problem is that he was not responsible
for the massacre AT ALL. He gave direct orders to the Phalangists not to
harm the non-combatants. He had know way of knowing that the commander of
the Phalangists that he gave those orders to was an agent of Syrian Intelligence
and that he used the opportunity to create a situation of such horror that
it would cover over the assassination of the Elected President of Lebanon by
the Syrians who always considered Lebanon a part of Syria.

This is known to the Palestinians. The Hamas article in part 2 proves it.

The best thing that could happen is that Sharon should open the case and
bring in the evidence and the perps. But that won't happen. No head of state
can be forced to trial like this. The Palestinians know this as well. So now
we will have a PR war in the media at a time of real crisis in the Middle
East.

But is interesting to watch what people choose to believe.

One group's attempt to protect itself against corporate Internet bullying
has failed with the loss of the EasyProtest.com Web site.

The protest site was set up in November and offered to give advice to anyone
who owned a domain name starting with easy. This was to prevent the Easy
Group - run by billionaire Stelios Haji-Ioannou - from taking over any and
all such sites, claiming that they infringed the company's trademarks.

The Easy Group - which owns and runs EasyJet budget airline, EasyEverything
Internet cafes and EasyRentacar budget car rental - embarked on an
aggressive reverse domain hijacking policy last year, sending threatening
legal letters to any sites beginning with easy.

Most of the cases brought before WIPO have been spurious - represented in
the fact that WIPO has consistently ruled against the organisation, an
unusual happening at the corporate-friendly arbitrator. Among cases it has
lost are easyescape.com, easygetaway.com, easycrossing.com, easypeazy.com,
easymaterial.com and www.easy-jet.com.

However, it has also won many domains. It was the arrival of a threatening
letter from the group for the domain easycar.com that lead its owner to set
up easyprotest.com. Its stated aim was to to advise companies and
individuals of their legal rights in relation to defending themselves
against the threat of litigation and offer support, guidance and access to
information that will assist in their defence and planning.

Visit easyprotest (.com, .net, .org or .co.uk) or easycar now though and you
will be transported to EasyRentacar.com. We don't know when this happened
but presumably it was recent and most likely through the law courts as we
can't find any mention of an arbitrator's decision.

We spoke to the man listed as the site's new admin owner, Eddy Whatt at Easy
Group, in the hope of clarifying the situation. For a company that
represents itself as being consumer friendly and open, his response was
surprising. I can't give any of that info away, he said, before saying
he'd talk to the PR department and hanging up.

Not exactly the response you'd expect from a company that claims it is
merely protecting its trademark.

Update
We've managed to track down the former owner of both Easycar and
Easyprotest, Richard Lowden - a director of Eurodrive car rental firm. He's
informed us that a settlement is currently being beaten out between his
company and Easy Group. It's not public knowledge as yet - which may explain
why Easy Group was so unwilling to discuss the matter.

There is a settlement, although he cannot give us any details as yet - but
we reckon this is a lump sum of cash if Eurodrive promises not to help out
any other easy Web sites in fighting Easy Group's Napoleonic plans.

Easy Group did threaten to sue Eurodrive, so it counter-claimed against Easy
Group. Both sides then agreed they didn't want to go to court over the issue
and decided to come to a financial agreement. Details of that should be out
anytime soon.

Just as the service at the New Hope Victory Centre church was coming to a
close, Sam Cox rose to his feet and announced that he was still clean. He
had a job and had already been given a rise. The congregation applauded and
fell to its knees. The pastor and his assistant laid their hands on his head
and began to talk in tongues.
It sounded like the sort of nonsense language children would share, but Mr
Cox listened intently as the relentless rhythm of seemingly random syllables
drowned out the sound of the coal trucks grinding their gears outside. Faith
had saved him, the 33-year-old labourer said, by showing him his problem lay
deeper than simple addiction.

I always thought I had a drug problem, but now I know the pills are
straight from the devil, he explained matter-of-factly. The devil comes to
steal your soul. That's his job every day. The drug is the demon spirit.

If so, the demon spirit remained triumphant outside the church walls,
running rampage along the Appalachian valleys where Mr Cox was raised. In
his tiny home town, Justice, and in Gilbert, a few miles further down the
Tug Fork river, four out of 10 young adults are hooked on a potent
prescription painkiller called OxyContin.

In this part of West Virginia, and the neighbouring hill counties of
Virginia and Kentucky, they call it hillbilly heroin or poor man's
heroin. They also call it a plague. In the past two years it has caused
scores of deaths in the region in the form of overdoses, suicides and car
wrecks. In the words of Michael Pratt, a Kentucky prosecutor trying in vain
to combat its influence: The bodies are stacking up like cordwood.

Crime wave


The OxyContin epidemic has meanwhile generated an exponential rise in the
crime rate, as addicts become ever more desperate to finance their craving.
The Gilbert police chief, Greg Cline, is trying to do his best to combat the
dealers, who are often families on welfare trying to earn extra money, but
money for sting operations is in short supply. And he has his hands full
enough with the OxyContin crime wave.

Its serious, he said. You see a lot more shoplifting, petty theft and
prescription fraud. Our thefts went up a lot. We're a real small town and
our thefts tripled in the last summer.

In some of the hardest-hit towns up the valley, the police believe that up
to 80% of crime is OxyContin-related.

It is no accident the epidemic took root in the Appalachians, traditionally
the poorest region in the country. With a doctor's prescription and Medicaid
assistance, OxyContin - a brand name for the synthetic opiate oxycodone -
can cost virtually nothing at a chemist's but sells on the streets for a
dollar a milligram. A prescription is often worth over $1,000 (£700).

The high rate of injuries and chronic pain among workers in the local mining
and logging industries means that it found its way into a lot of bathroom
cupboards. Mr Cox first encountered its overwhelming powers after he fell
from a bulldozer in a 1999 logging accident.

Now OxyContin abuse is spreading from its heartland. It already has a grip
in Maine, it is a significant problem in Ohio. It has reached epidemic
proportions in New Orleans, there are reports of trouble in Florida and the
west coast, and it is steadily eating its way through Virginia and Maryland
towards Washington DC.

It's likely to go national, said Robert DuPont, a former White House drug
tsar who now runs a thinktank on drug abuse policy. The tinder is there.
The spark hasn't set it off yet, but it will.

Four million Americans take prescription drugs for recreational reasons,
according to a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, including
opiates like oxycodone as well as stimulants (uppers) and sedatives
(downers).

OxyContin represents the worst single-drug outbreak the US has seen since
the 19th century, when opiates were the most prescribed medicine in the
country, and morphine or opium addiction was rampant. That changed when
legal restrictions were placed on the medical use of opiates, but now, Mr
Dupont said, the pendulum is swinging back the other way.

He said: In the pain management field, there is a strong feeling that pain
is being undertreated and that it would be better dealt with with higher
doses, and that view has got up a tremendous head of steam.

The shift back to powerful opiates is far less pronounced in Britain, where
OxyContin has been available since 1999 but under far more rigorous
supervision. Cases of addiction are so far rare.

In the US, OxyContin is manufactured by Purdue Pharma of Connecticut.

I read that story in the SF Chronicle two weeks ago. I've seen a LOT of
articles on Oxy-C abuse. My take is that they result from a covert PR
campaign by the manufacturer aimed at exploiting the recreational drug
users market. It's advertising, and it works. If you believe otherwise,
you simply haven't spent any time around druggies and have no idea how
their minds work. There are literally millions of people who would take
one look at that article and immediately set out to acquire some Oxy-C.
This is an incredibly clever advertising campaign.

is what they promote for our children?

Note this one candidate sill bashes the Boy Scouts but keep in mind the
Supreme Court said the Boy Scouts could boot out homosexuals let
them form their own groups.

So much for New York Candidates groveling at the feet of Gay Pride Flag
- the Rainbow..

Communists Unite - but it was said the people were cheering for their
present Mayor and we see the salad bowl, once called the melting pot as
the scum runneth over.

New York New York what a wonderful town.dying soon of the great
plague.
If Nile Encephalitis does not get them,  HIV and AIDS will.guess
nobody with any self respect wants to run for the Mayor of New York City
anymore?

A Parade Underscores Candidates' Unity on Gay Issues

celebration at the parade, in which one man came dressed as a lavender
poodle.
he six men vying to take over City Hall each reached to embrace the
rainbow flag yesterday, as the Democratic and Republican mayoral
candidates joined in the annual celebration of gay pride that once again
turned a large swath of Midtown and Lower Manhattan into a pulsating,
gyrating party.
Armed with banners and megaphones and flanked by gay supporters, the
candidates did their best to distinguish themselves.
But it was not just the throngs of marchers in short shorts or others
festooned in wigs, feathers and sequins — one man was even dressed as
a lavender poodle — that made it difficult for the candidates to stand
out. It is that the main mayoral candidates in the field, particularly
the Democrats, agree on most of the gay issues facing the city today.
There is not a single candidate who can be described as not good on our
issues, said Matt Foreman, executive director of the Empire State Pride
Agenda, a gay rights organization. In other parts of the country, the
positions taken here would be extremely unpopular, if not deadly at the
polls.
Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi, Public Advocate Mark Green, City Council
Speaker Peter F. Vallone and Fernando Ferrer, the Bronx borough
president, each support providing health benefits to domestic partners
of city workers and employees of city contractors. Those four
candidates, as well as the Republican candidates, Herman Badillo and
Michael Bloomberg, support laws that prohibit discrimination against
homosexuals and oppose the Boy Scouts of America's ban on openly gay
leaders or scouts.
The similarities, especially among the Democrats, forced the candidates
to emphasize the depth of their enthusiasm for gay causes.
It's a matter of the intensity of involvement on a thousand different
issues, said Mr. Hevesi, who won the coveted endorsement this year from
the city's Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats group, and marched
yesterday with City Councilwoman Christine Quinn and State Senator
Thomas K. Duane, who are openly gay.
Mr. Green noted that he has the support of James Dale, the gay former
Boy Scout leader from New Jersey whose case against the Scouts went to
the United States Supreme Court, as well as other prominent gay and
lesbian advocates.
One thing is your positions, another is your outspokeness, Mr. Green
said.
Mr. Ferrer, who marched with Councilman Philip Reed and Councilwoman
Margarita López, who are openly gay, said quite plainly: It's a
matter of `Will we tolerate any discrimination or none?´ I say none.
Mr. Vallone found himself closer to the two Republican mayoral
candidates on at least one issue that is important to some in the gay
community: the push to legalize gay marriage. Mr. Vallone and Mr.
Badillo oppose gay marriages, while Mr. Bloomberg

march in and take.

Why is Africa so poor and this UN Secretary so rich - a zulu in $1,200
suits telling us we must pay for AIDS in Africa while they push it on
the kids in the USA as a form of their genocide, but our suicide?

Now in the 60 period we had the Civil Rights Fights and King marhcing
across the promised land thinking he would take it over but God got him
Nebo just like he nailed Moses..never did find the body of Moses.

Now here we are the 40 year march through the wilderness and they come
up with a real killer, Gay Pride and mix well with the boy scouts for
effetive form of genocidie.

UNITED NATIONS, June 25 —  Calling upon world leaders to
face the facts about a pandemic that has swept continents, taking over
22 million lives and leaving 13 million children orphans, U.N.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan delivered a powerful opening to the first
global gathering on HIV/AIDS, on Monday.

  'We cannot deal with AIDS by making moral judgments or refusing to
face unpleasant facts, and still less by stigmatizing those who are
infected.'

U.N. secretary general UP TO NOW, the world's response
has not measured up to the challenge, Annan said. We must change —
if not for our own sake, then for our children's.
   The secretary-general, who has made the fight against
AIDS his personal priority, said money must be urgently mobilized and
used effectively in response to this unprecedented crisis.
   What are needed, Annan said, are leadership, partnership
and solidarity.
   Leadership is needed in every country, in every
community — and at the international levels, where the entire united
nations is now engaged.
   Partnership is needed between governments, private
companies, foundations, international organizations — and of course,
civil society.
   Finally, solidarity is needed — between the healthy
and the sick, between rich and poor, between richer and poorer nations.
   Harri Holkeri, President of the General Assembly, echoed
many of Annan's remarks, pointing out that every single day 14,000
people become infected [with HIV].The United Nations opened a three-day
session on AIDS with a potent symbol - a multicolored, patchwork quilt
honoring the millions of lives lost to one of the worst epidemics in
human history.
   Expectations for a successful gathering are high and
varied for many of the 3,000 participants, including health experts,
politicians, scientists, AIDS activists and patients working to find an
end to the scourge.
   Three days of conferences and meetings touching on
everything from drug prices to homosexuality, AIDS orphans and funding,
will conclude Wednesday with a document mapping out a global strategy to
halt the disease and reverse its effects.

DEBATE OVER NAMING VULNERABLE
   Hours before the conference, however, diplomats were
still arguing over treatment versus prevention and fundamental
differences on the language in the document. Many Muslim nations and
even the United States are vehemently opposed to specifically naming the
disease's most vulnerable groups, including homosexual men. Others argue
it is imperative to identify those most in need of the world's attention
in the AIDS fight.
   When we urge others to change their behavior, so as to
protect themselves against infection, we must be ready to change our own
behavior in the public arena, Annan told the 189-nation General
Assembly.
   We cannot deal with AIDS by making moral judgments or
refusing to face unpleasant facts, and still less by stigmatizing those
who are infected. We can only do it by speaking clearly and plainly,
both about the ways that people become infected, and about what they can
to avoid infection.
   Somber messages were expected to follow from the leaders
of Kenya and Nigeria - each home to more than 2 million HIV patients -
and from impoverished Botswana and Zimbabwe, where more than 20 percent
of the adult population is infected, as well as South Africa, where AIDS
will knock off 17 years of

  The reality is that the West Bank / Gaza situation is essentially
 one of Neo European Colonialism.

The European pedigree of the modern state of Israel cannot be denied.
As you say, the Palestinians are an occupied people. The Black South
Africans were an occupied people for several hundred years as were generations
of Algerians. Of course the Boers and the many generation Algerian born

beat the natives. The Boers and the French considered themselves winners
and the Black S. Africans and Algerians losers. Of course History reveals
the real winners and losers. And we haven't even begun to discuss the
sordid, double dealing role the European Colonial Powers (especially Great
Britain) had in creating the state of Israel.

 How come no one is asking the USA to return Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New
 Mexico, and California to Mexico??? And, the rest of the country to the

I dont ask anything from anyone. As a matter of fact it becomes more apparent
every year that the Mexicans are reoccuping Tx, Colorado, Az, N. Mexico
and Calif. It would not surprise me if during this century, the US devolves into
several different, independent countries or if at least part of the above states
reattach themselves to Mexico as a result of political agitation from Mexican
Americans or illegal Mexican immigrants  - a mirror replay of the founding
of the Texas Republic.


Since WWII there have been countless wars of National Liberation.
 These wars of national liberation are very brutal wars where terrorism is the
 most effective and common weapon - for both sides. Terrorist bombings
 by insurgents; airplane bombings by the superior military side. Torture
is de rigueur by those seeking to oppress the insurgents.
 Algeria, Kenya, Viet Nam, Rhodesia, South Africa come readily to mind.
 Of course Israel itself was birthed through terrorism.


 This is NOT THE SAME AS COLONIZATION FOR PROFIT! This was a matter of
 survival where the Palestinians paid for the sins of Christian Europe. I
 personally think the Germany should have been given to the surviving Jews.
 Then the Germans would be dealing with the aftermath of dispossession. That
 would have been justice.

Making a distinction between colonization for profit and colonization for
survival is specious in terms of history. Every colonizer attempts to justify
their actions. The alleged motives for the colonization are meaningless in regards
to the reaction of the colonized. I am sure the colonized say that whether you
colonize to save souls..bring civilized enlightenmentneed to take others
land for your own or simply take resources makes no difference. I doubt
whether the new victims are more accepting of their victimhood because their
oppressors were once victims. For you to claim their is no economic
motive in the continuing occupation of the West Bank or Gaza denies reality.
The Arabs are a cheap source of labor and we haven't even begun to discuss
distorted allocation of water resources and in the Middle East water is more
important then oil.

 That was in the first half of the last century. There is no more Palestine.
 There is Israel and Jordan. Like it or not. I think that if the Palestinians
 don't like living under the Israelis, AND they can't defeat them in order
 to change their situation, they should move to Germany.

Your time frame is silly. We are talking about never forgotten grievances (real
and imagined) that go back 1000's of yearsand you speak of a few decades?


 Few observers supported the terrorist tactics of the insurgents or the
 status quo. As J2 points out - such is the reality of brutual conflicts -
  and the side with the highest pain tolerance usually prevails.
 Generally those with less to lose and the higher birth rate will
 win.

 This is a wrong analysis. The side with the greatest power will win. Either
 the power of numbers as in S. Africa, or the power of military strength.

I agree with you. Unless the Israelis decide to exterminate millions of Palestinians
(and the world placidly accepts this) their long term outlook is not good. And
without fail, in an occupied situation the side with the numbers will always beat the
militarily superior occupier. I challenge you to name one example of a militarily
superior occupier outlasting a much bigger occupied population in modern (and
ancient) history. In addition, in an occupier situation, a

NRA Loses Fight Over Brady Law File

WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Rifle Association lost a Supreme Court appeal Monday 
over whether the government can
retain information about gun buyers under the landmark Brady gun control law.

The court, without comment, turned aside the NRA's challenge to the way the FBI 
handles information gathered from on-the-spot
background checks in gun stores.

The NRA claimed the FBI's practice of keeping identities of legal gun buyers on file 
for several months is illegal under the 1993
Brady Act itself, and is akin to compiling a national registry of gun owners.

``The Brady Act was a historic compromise in which firearm purchasers submit to 
background checks in exchange for the
assurance that, once cleared as law-abiding, the government will not compile any 
record of their identities,'' lawyers for the NRA
wrote.

So-called instant checks replaced five-day waiting periods under the Brady Act in 
1998. The phone checks are performed through
the FBI, while the would-be gun buyer waits.

In planning for the change to instant checks, the Justice Department, under 
then-Attorney General Janet Reno, decided the FBI
would keep the records for up to six months. Keeping the information would help the 
FBI debug the system and audit its
performance, according to the administrative rule the Justice Department issued.

Keeping the log would also protect privacy by helping catch dealers or others who 
might run unauthorized background checks on
people who were not trying to buy a gun, the department said.

The FBI eventually cut the length of time it would hang on to records to three months, 
but the NRA said any record retention
should be banned.

The NRA sued Reno in federal court on the day the instant checks took effect. The 
court dismissed the NRA's claim, and a
federal appeals court agreed last year.

Two of the three judges on the appeals panel found ``nothing in the Brady Act that 
unambiguously prohibits temporary retention of
information about lawful transactions.'' The dissenting judge called the FBI records 
retention ``an unauthorized power grab'' by the
Justice Department.

The NRA then appealed to the Supreme Court, setting up a common question for the 
justices: How does a law passed by
Congress square with government regulations imposed later on?

The Justice Department urged the high court to let the lower ruling stand. The appeals 
court correctly found that the FBI's buyer
log was a temporary list and was not intended to track gun buyers, the department's 
lawyers argued.

The case is NRA v. Ashcroft, 00-1332.

0857.  DOD finds no systemic problems with absentee ballots

WASHINGTON (AFPN) - The Department of Defense's inspector general found no
systemic problems in the department's handling of overseas absentee ballots
during the 2000 election.

The inspector general, along with testimony given by the General Accounting
Office to the House Armed Services Committee, reiterated that their reviews
uncovered neither systemic problems nor significant discrepancies of the DOD
Federal Voting Assistance Program, said Charles S. Abell, assistant
secretary of defense for force management policy.

While there were areas for improvement, the IG did not find that the
program failed, he said.

Military members, their families and civilians assigned overseas have the
same right to vote as American citizens living in the United States, Abell
said during a Pentagon press conference June 22. We in the Department of
Defense must do all that we can to ensure this right is not diminished by
virtue of their overseas, deployed or shipboard assignment.

It is DOD's responsibility through the Federal Voting Assistance Program to
educate the military community in the voting process and enable them to
exercise their rights to vote.

The DOD IG found that the voting assistance program was not consistent among
the services. Abell said his office, working with the FVAP, would work to
make the processes in the services consistent with DOD.

The IG recommended that the Federal Voting Assistance Program office
continue to work with state election officials to resolve absentee voting
problems. These include trying to standardize the various states'
requirements, differing voter residency requirements, simplifying the
overseas ballot process and working with states to test and use new
technological solutions for the absentee balloting process.

The IG also recommended that DOD revise its guidance to require the services
to name unit voting assistance officers and to specify the maximum number of
people any one officer should support.

The 2000 election actually saw a record-high overseas-participation rate of
72 percent.

A total of 74 percent of all members of the uniformed services voted -- 72
percent overseas, 76 percent stateside. Overall, only 51 percent of all
eligible Americans voted.

The FVAP provided assistance to 258,000 active-duty military personnel,
118,000 family members and 87,000 DOD civilian employees stationed overseas,
Abell said.

Abell said the IG also found no systemic problems in the military postal
system. All mail is supposed to have postmarks that have the date and
originating address.

News reports following the vote in November said some military absentee
ballots were disqualified because they did not have postmarks. Abell said
the DOD IG did not address this allegation.

The GAO is taking a broader look at the problems of absentee voting in the
2000 election. Their report is due out in September.

Abell said he welcomes recommendations for improvement made by the DOD IG.

We're going to follow through on all the recommendations and continue to
seek ways to facilitate the process for members of the military community,
he said.

Aerospace Command and Control and Intelligence, Surveillance and
Reconnaissance Center Public Affairs

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. (AFPN) -- About 100 ambassadors, generals, and
other distinguished visitors from NATO visited here June 21 as part of a
seminar held by the supreme allied commander of the Atlantic.

The seminar brought together NATO leadership to discuss alliance issues and
see some of America's defense capabilities.

The theme of the seminar was succeeding against the mobile target -
synchronized combat operations.  Discussions focused on the challenges of
developing a common operational picture and attacking mobile targets on the
battlefield.

This seminar provided a great exchange of information between us and our
NATO allies, said Col. Dusty Rhoades, director of staff for Air Combat
Command. We are working a lot of the same issues, as we grapple with
command and control and time-critical targeting challenges. This brought us
one step closer to developing joint solutions.

The Langley portion of the seminar was highlighted by a tour of the Combined
Aerospace Operations Center-Experimental and a flightline visit to see a
Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle and other ACC aircraft.

CAOC-X was established by ACC and Air Force Materiel Command to help
operators, acquisition professionals, testers, and industry experts quickly
deliver the newest technologies and processes to aerospace operations
centers. The centers are facilities used to command aerospace power in
combat.

Top Riviera magistrate 'raided database' for Masonic lodge

JEAN-PAUL RENARD, Nice's senior magistrate, is under investigation in what is
potentially the most serious corruption case to hit the Cote d'Azur since the
scandals of the 1970s.

Mr Renard spent 30 hours in detention last week before being placed under
formal investigation by the city's public prosecutor for allegedly passing
sensitive information from France's national criminal database to members of
his Masonic lodge.

The case is linked to "hidden networks" in police and judicial circles that
have successfully "buried" inquiries into serious allegations against
prominent local figures, says the prosecutor, Eric de Montgolfier. In some
instances, he says, cover-ups date back to the late 1970s when Graham Greene
- then living nearby in Antibes - penned his furious J'Accuse! attack on the
crime and corruption flourishing in the region.

Mr Renard, with almost 20 years' service in the Nice magistrature, has not
yet been charged, but the justice ministry has requested his temporary
suspension from duty. The prosecutor's office wants a magistrate from outside
the city to take charge of the unprecedented investigation. "There's too much
at stake to risk this being swept under the carpet," said one lawyer involved
in the case.

The allegations against Mr Renard concern his alleged illegal use of the
secure database known as "Bulletin Number One" that is available to
magistrates handling judicial dossiers. It contains material about criminal
and civil convictions of French citizens. Mr Renard admits that he made 33
checks to help "vet" applicants for initiation into the Masonic lodge.

Mr de Montgolfier suspects that there were more and that the magistrate
continued to raid the database after leaving the order. He joined the Grand
National Lodge of France in 1991 and resigned early in 1998.

In a parallel case that raises troubling questions about the purpose of these
alleged illicit searches, a Nice police officer who belongs to Mr Renard's
former lodge has testified that he accessed the same restricted databank for
information on President Jacques Chirac and Mr de Montgolfier.

One local journalist said: "God knows what the guy was looking for. But it's
easy to imagine how material from the files might be used to blackmail a
business competitor or compromise a political opponent."

Since being appointed two years ago, Mr de Montgolfier has courted
controversy in his efforts to root out the culture of sleaze,
influence-peddling and backroom deals that disfigured Nice under the
notoriously corrupt former mayor, the late Jacques Medecin.


For 25 years, Medecin, who inherited the post from his father, ran the city
as a personal fiefdom, surrounded by an entourage of crooked cronies and bent
policemen, although - to Graham Greene's dismay - this failed to discourage
voters from re-electing him on three occasions.

Mr de Montgolfier has been cultivating the media with revelations about 
numerous investigations from the Medecin era - some involving allegations of
property fraud, influence peddling and paedophile activities - that
magistrates shelved without satisfactory explanation. Earlier this month, he
let it be known that he was re-examining cases which he had been assured by
judicial insiders would never go for trial "because so-and-so is a Mason".

One involves an inquiry into the activities of a colourful character known as
"Marcel La Salade" (so named for his market garden business). Another
concerns corruption allegations against a former mayor of Cannes.

Mr de Montgolfier said last month that sensitive judicial dossiers were still
going astray in the magistrature. He complained that he did not have the
resources to get to grips with such problems. "Fighting organised crime with
the means at my disposal is like trying to empty the sea with a bucket," he
told Le Monde newspaper.

"It's even more difficult when you don't know who else you can count on.
These days I never leave any documents lying around - everything goes into
the safe." The decision to arrest Mr Renard outraged many fellow magistrates,
lawyers and courtroom staff, who accuse the prosecutor's office of pursuing a
vendetta against him.

After his release, about 100 people gathered to applaud him as he returned to
the Palais de Justice. Before departing on a holiday brought forward from
July, Mr Renard told them: "I've never tried to place myself above the law,
but I do believe that I've been treated less fairly than an ordinary citizen."

The New Bush Administration continues to resurrect the Old Bush Cabal. 
According to recent press reports, the infamous, sinister and dreaded Elliot 
Abrams has been appointed to the National Security Council as senior director 
for democracy, human rights and operations. Not to be forgotten is the fact 
that Elliott Abrams is a liar par excellence - and a known shredder of 
documents.

      
Elliott Abrams actually originated the phrase "Shadow Government" designating 
the machinations of the Bush Cabal during the Iran Contra years.

      
During the Reagan-Bush Administration, former Assistant Secretary of State 
Elliott Abrams was in charge of a propaganda office in the State Department 
known as the Inter-American Affairs Office, ostensibly set up to provide a 
liaison between the Nicaraguan contras, the CIA and the National Security 
Council.

      
Within the purview of the Inter-American Affairs office, Abrams was 
responsible for dispensing duly authorized Congressional humanitarian aid to 
the Nicaraguan contras. At the time, Congress made three separate 
appropriations totaling $300 million in 1985 and 1986 for so-called 
"humanitarian aid."

      
During the Hughes Commission probe of 1988, Congressman Hughes discovered 
that the State Department could only account for $27 million of the $300 
million expended.

      
As Hughes reported in his final summary report, which was then forwarded to 
the general counsel of the Tower Commission, the remaining $273 million 
seemed to have disappeared into a variety of "CIA-connected offshore 
accounts."

      
All the major participants had code names during Iran-Contra. Elliot Abram's 
official code name was "The Snake." His equally sinister underling, Deputy 
Assistant Security of State Michael Kozak was code-named "The Weasel."

      
Bill Casey, then director of the CIA, often thought up these codenames 
himself. Casey admitted publicly before he died that the code names he used 
were based on his perception of people's characters.

      
Around 1985, Clair George, then deputy Director of the CIA, was in charge of 
all CIA sanctioned narcotics operations. Clair George, by the way, was one of 
the passengers in that Twin Beech Baron aircraft that Miami Customs 
inadvertently forced to land at Tamiami Airport in November 1983. A sizable 
quantity of cocaine was found in the plane, and Clair George was actually the 
so-called "high ranking unnamed CIA official" that the FBI didn't want to 
name in the famous 12B-151 FBI internatlk Memorandum.

      
The last time I had seen Clair George, in 1985, he told me that Bill Casey's 
opinion of Elliott Abrams was that he thought that Abrams "had all the 
intestinal fortitude of a bowl of jello."

      
Casey also said that if Elliott Abrams was just given a few volts of 
electro-shock he'd "sing like a friggin bird."

      
It should also be mentioned that Elliot Abrams' other claim to fame was the 
December 10, 1985 meeting with Manuel Noriega. He met Noriega along with 
Michael Kozak and Bill Walters in the conference room of the Hotel 
Intercontinental in Panama City to discuss Noriega's grievances that he 
wasn't being paid enough per kilogram of cocaine that was passing through his 
country. This was pursuant to Oliver North's "guns for drugs" operation. That 
meeting was Elliott Abrams' one claim to fame - and even that meeting didn't 
go well.

      
Elliott Abrams didn't want to give Noriega any extra money, because by this 
time, (December 1985), Bill Casey and George Bush were growing nervous about 
the administration's closeness to somebody they were seeing as increasingly 
unreliable.So Abrams was sent down to placate Noriega.

      
By the way, Noriega was still upset about al lot of the little things that 
had happened to him. There was the $5 million of his money that Oliver North 
swiped that was supposed to be given to Don Aronow to build those gunboats 
for the Panamanian Navy.

      
No one seems to know where the five million actually went. It was five 
million in cash.

      
When North left Noriega in Panama City, he stopped in San Jose Costa, Rica to 
see Joe Fernandez, the Costa Rican CIA Station Chief.

      
It's interesting to note that later that day there was a $2 million cash 
deposit to the North-controlled account of Intercontinental Industries S.A. 
of San Jose, Costa Rica. The deposit was made into their account at the Banco 
de Popular. This was discovered by interviewing the general manager of the 
Dominican branch of the Banco de Popular, during a related investigation.

      
Bill Walters, who was also "negotiating" with Noriega, is of course Bush's 
newly appointed "drug czar."

      
The logical conclusion is that George Bush Jr. is trying to put together the 
old RAG-1 (Restricted Access Group 1). He is reassembling

Of 'Agreement' With Plane 
Crash Verdict

CAIRO, (AFP) - Egypt's airline and pilots' union rejected Monday a report in 
the US magazine Newsweek that Egyptian investigators privately agreed with 
their US counterparts that a co-pilot's suicide was the likely cause of an 
October 1999 EgyptAir crash in which 217 people died.     

"The report published in Newsweek is false," said a high-ranking EgyptAir 
official on condition of anonymity.     

Newsweek reported Sunday that US intelligence intercepts revealed that 
Egyptian investigators secretly agreed with US findings that the plane's 
co-pilot, Gamil al-Battuti, intentionally crashed the Boeing jet into the 
Atlantic shortly after take-off from New York on October 31, 1999, with the 
aim of killing himself.     

"It is inconceivable that a member of the Egyptian investigation commission 
would admit to the allegation of suicide by Gamil al-Battuti," the EgyptAir 
official said.     The accusation, first leaked by US officials in late 1999, 
has long enraged the Egyptian public.     

"If we were convinced, even slightly, of the US point of view concerning the 
accident's cause ... the investigation would have already been completed 
without consuming so much time and effort on the part of the Egyptian team 
for uncovering the truth," the official said.     

EgyptAir's managing director Mohamed Fahim Rayyan has already rejected the 
suicide theory.     

The Egyptian pilots' union also denounced the Newsweek story as "lacking all 
foundation," said pilot Ashraf al-Hawwari, the union's secretary.     

"The US authorities have tried since the beginning to throw all 
responsibility for the accident on the Egyptian pilots," al-Hawwari said.     

An Egyptian opposition daily, Al-Wafd, also attacked the Newsweek report, 
saying Washington had sparked an "espionage scandal" by eavesdropping on 
EgyptAir officials investigating the crash.     

Al-Wafd, run by the liberal opposition party of the same name, ran with the 
front-page headline: "American espionage scandal against Egypt."     

The United States is "a state founded on monitoring and espionage" which is 
"not ashamed to spy on itself as shown by the Watergate scandal, when the 
president (Richard Nixon) spied on his adversaries," it charged.     

"Will Egypt keep quiet on this flagrant violation and what justification will 
Washington give Cairo about this crime?" asked Al-Wafd, which concluded the 
authorities here will opt for "silence."     The National Transportation 
Safety Board is due to release its final report on the crash, which concludes 
that Battuti caused the Boeing to dive into the ocean, Newsweek said.     

Newsweek also quoted US officials as saying Egyptian authorities blocked 
efforts by US investigators to look into Battuti's lifestyle.     

Egyptian authorities have demanded the report be based on facts alone, and 
according to Newsweek insist the crash was caused by a mechanical problem.   
  

The Egyptian government and state-run newspapers have made no comment on the 
Newsweek story.

:: CEASE-FIRE TO REMAIN: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon convened a long
meeting of his security cabinet Wednesday, at the end of which it was
decided that Israel will continue its efforts to implement the Tenet
document.  The decision was made despite the government's determination
that, according to an official announcement, the Palestinian Authority has
still not fulfilled its obligations specified in the Tenet document.

Head of the Palestinian preventive security apparatus in Yesha, Jibril
Rajoub, said Sunday that the PA/PLO would not allow illegal armed
militias in Yesha. However, he said that the PA/PLO would not arrest
terrorists nor collect weapons that are in the hands of terrorists. [Ed.
note: what is considered an illegal militia?]


:: MEANWHILE, THE MURDERS CONTINUE: Danny Yehuda, 35, of Chomesh, was
murdered Monday in a typical drive-by terrorist shooting attack as he was
driving near his home. A passenger suffered moderate wounds in the attack.
Later in the day, Doron Zisserman, 38, was murdered near the entrance to
Einav, after a Palestinian terrorist shot him in the neck.

Another resident of Chomesh, Ilya Krivitz, 62, was murdered Wednesday by
terrorist gunfire. Chomesh, 20 miles east of Netanya, is situated within a
narrow strip only two miles wide, flanked on both sides by territory under
total Arab control. Part of the two-mile strip itself is under PA/PLO
administrative control.

Two IDF soldiers, Staff-Sergeant Avi Izak, 19, of Kfar Saba and
Staff-Sergeant Ofir Kik, 19, of Jerusalem, were murdered Friday afternoon
in a bomb attack near the Gaza community of Dugit. The soldiers were lured
towards a jeep by an Arab woman standing on a roof, signaling the soldiers
for assistance. She indicated the jeep was stuck. As the soldiers
approached, a powerful blast was detonated and sniper fire was directed at
them. The Izzadin el-Kassim faction of the Hamas terror organization
claimed responsibility for the fatal attack.


:: TEL AVIV BOMBING CLAIMS 21ST VICTIM: Yevgenia Dorfman, 16, who was
critically injured in the Tel Aviv bombing attack on June 1, died Tuesday
morning. Dorfman, who sustained severe brain injuries, fought for her life
for over two weeks, undergoing several surgical procedures. One of the 23
wounded who still remain in the hospital is listed in serious condition.

The Israeli General Security Services (GSS) quickly found out who was
involved in this act of terror. At a meeting of the Supreme Security
Committee, Israel presented the PA/PLO delegates with the names of two
Hamas terrorists who had sent the bomber. The Palestinians were asked to
arrest the two immediately - and the Americans supported this demand. What
actually happened? The two men responsible for the terrorist attack were
invited to a meeting at the offices of one of the Palestinian security
services. In a conversation - not an interrogation - with the PA/PLO
security agents, the two admitted their involvement in sending the suicide
bomber to Tel Aviv and preparing him for the attack. And here comes the
interesting part: The two were warned by the Palestinian security people
not to carry out similar activities in the future - and apparently they
have even signed an agreement to that effect! After that chat, they were
released to their homes. At a second meeting of the Supreme Security
Committee, the Palestinians were asked what they had done with the two men
involved in the terrorist act. Their answer was: They have been warned!

LEFT-WING WAR ON THE POOR: In 1995, when the republican-led Congress
increased federal funding for the school lunch program, democrats launched
one of their most despicable attack campaigns in recent memory (and given
their rhetorical record, that's saying a lot), claiming that republicans were
slashing funding in order to starve poor school children. That the amount
of total funding was actually increased, not slashed, mattered not in the
least to the democrats. This left-wing attack campaign received great
prominence in the media, most of which simply regurgitated the democrat line
without question. Far less reported by the media, however, is the left's own
ongoing war on children and the poor which, although it has the benefit of
actually being true, doesn't fit the media's left-wing bias. When telling the
truth means criticizing leftists, in elite media circles the truth loses out
every time.

One example of this stealth war on the poor is Senator Jim Jeffords' pet
project, the Northeast Dairy Compact. This price-fixing cartel, established
in 1996 allegedly to save family dairy farms, has the practical effect, just
like any other price-fixing cartel, of raising the price of milk to
consumers. The Compact is scheduled to expire this fall and the Congress is
considering whether to extend its life. Senator Hillary It-Takes-A-Village
Clinton is reported to be in favor of continuing to gouge children and the
poor with higher milk prices (watch how she votes on S.109, the Dairy Farmer
Viability Act, co-sponsored by Jeffords in the Senate).

Another example of this left-wing war on the poor is the rising cost of
housing. The latest census revealed a growing lack of affordable housing,
particularly in California. The Sacramento Bee reports that Coastal
California slipped out of reach of all but the well-to-do in the '90s.. That
would be during the Bill I-feel-your-pain Clinton Decade of Greed, when the
rich got richer and the poor suffered. According to the report, prices on the
coast are skyrocketing, driving middle and lower income families inland,
while the coast is becoming the exclusive haunt of multi-millionaires. The
reason prices have soared is that the construction of new housing hasn't kept
pace with the growing population, just as the construction of new power
generating facilities has not kept pace with population growth and increasing
energy demands in California, and for the same reason -- extreme
environmental restrictions. But of course the ever-so-sensitive
environmentalists -- and indeed most Californians -- simply don't see the
connection. Economist Thomas Sowell perfectly summarized the left-wing
mind-set: .in California, there seems to be no connection in most people's
minds between 'open space' laws and housing so scarce that it is outrageously
expensive. Often the very same people are passionately in favor of both 'open
space' and 'affordable housing' -- and see no conflict between these goals. .
The missing link in many Californians' thinking is the link between what they
do and the consequences that follow. In California, you show what a good
person you are by being in favor of all sorts of politically correct goals --
and blithely disregarding the costs these goals will impose on others of the
consequences for the whole society. Left-wing extremists lecture the rest of
us and adopt their politically correct poses, leaving other people pay the
price.

Is this multi-faceted left-wing war on the poor simply a manifestation of the
law of unintended consequences? After all, the left really means well, don't
they? Hardly. An impoverished future for everyone is precisely what left-wing
radicals intend. Here's what one of them recently wrote to the New York
Times: Only by shrinking our population and retrenching our expectations for
better tomorrows can we avoid poisoning the environment. (New York Times,
May 29, 2001, Letter to the Editor) The enemy, according to the left, is the
traditional human dream of making a better life for your children. Indeed,
for all their blather about the children, leftists see children themselves
as the problem.

FANTASY LAND: California Governor Gray Davis has apparently been able to
overcome the blame initially leveled at him by Californians for his role in
exacerbating California's energy crisis. He has done that by successfully
shifting the blame to President Bush, for failing to bail Californians out of
their own short-sighted policies; and by blaming utility companies for price
gouging (in the world of liberalism, any failure of their own policies is
always someone else's fault). Davis engineered the turnaround in his
popularity with the help of two former Clinton-Gore media flaks who
specialize in slash-and-burn attack politics, Chris Lehane and Mark Fabiani.
Those two don't work cheap. There is currently

Houston Mom 'in Deep Psychosis,' Lawyer Says

Andrea Yates, the suburban Houston woman who confessed to drowning her five
children one-by-one in a bathtub last week, is in a very deep psychosis,
her lawyer said Monday.


Attorney George Parnham said he has met with psychiatrists treating the
36-year-old Yates at the Harris County Jail, where she is on a 24-hour
suicide watch. She has been charged with one count of capital murder and
could receive the death sentence if convicted.

Parnham said he expects Yates to plead not guilty because of insanity.

My observation is that she is still in a very deep psychosis, he told CBS'
The Early Show. We are having her treated and examined by very professional
mental health experts who care deeply for their patients.

He said the medication she is on likely will kick in and there will be some
ability to have a rational conversation with her, Parnham told ABC's Good
Morning America. That moment in time has not yet arrived.

Yates has been charged with one count of capital murder in the deaths of her
sons Noah, 7, and John, 5. The other children found dead in the family home
were Paul, 3; Luke, 2; and 6-month-old Mary. Authorities said other charges
might follow.

Parnham said he is gathering background on Yates' mental health history
before making a final decision on her defense.

I've accumulated evidence in the last 24 hours that strongly suggests that
the mental status of my client will be the issue, which means entering a
not-guilty plea by reason of insanity, the lawyer told the Houston
Chronicle.

He would not say what evidence indicated Yates was insane when she killed the
children. However, the lawyer said he does not think the case warrants the
death penalty and he hopes prosecutors decide against seeking it.

Yates' husband, Russell, has said that his wife's postpartum depression,
coupled with her father's recent death, drove her to harm their children.

George Dix, a law professor at the University of Texas, said insanity
defenses are rarely used and rarely succeed when they are. To be found
innocent by reason of insanity, Yates would have to show that she was so
mentally impaired that she couldn't see circumstances for what they were.

For example, if she believed her children to be devils, she's entitled to
acquittal, Dix told The Dallas Morning News in Sunday's editions.

Michelle Oberman, a law professor at DePaul University in Chicago and author
of the upcoming book Mothers Who Kill Their Children, said postpartum
depression has been a defense element since the mid-1980s.

The best chance she has, if she's got any good chance, lies in hoping the
jury understands the circumstances under which she was operating and to
understand the reality of postpartum depression, Oberman said.

About 10 percent to 20 percent of mothers face some level of postpartum
depression. Most cases are mild, and can be treated with counseling and
medicine. On rare occasions, post-partum depression has been known to cause
psychosis or delusions.

Indian religious leaders condemn female foeticide

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's top religious leaders met in New Delhi on
Sunday to make a passionate plea to end a growing trend of aborting female
foetuses.

Prominent seers representing a cross-section of faiths appealed to people,
quoting from holy books and religious texts, to put an end to the practice,
calling it cold blooded murder.

Female foeticide is a crime against humanity. People forget that to carry on
with life, a girl child is a must, said Swami Jayaendra Saraswatiji Maharaj,
the Jagatguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi, one of Hinduism's most revered monks.

The convention was organised jointly by the Indian Medical Association, the
National Commission of Women and UNICEF.

Hindu seers dressed in traditional saffron robes and a naked Jain sadhu (holy
man) quoted from ancient vedic texts and scriptures on the role of women in
Indian society, calling her a life giver, even a goddess.

Women are forced to abort their female foetus owing to family pressure and
the practice of dowry is responsible for this, said Swami Agnivesh of the
Arya Samaj, referring to the widespread South Asian practice of men demanding
huge sums of money and gifts from the bride's family during marriage.

Instances of brides who are unable to meet the demand being tortured and
sometimes killed after they are married are frequent, authorities say.


INFLUENCE MASSES

India's patriarchal society has traditionally preferred sons to daughters and
the preference continues to be strong in the country's rural and semi-urban
areas.

A 2001 census showed the country of 1.027 billion people had only 933 females
for every 1,000 males, down from 972 in 1991.

A January report in the Indian Medical Association's Family Medicine India
journal said it estimated about five million female foeticides are carried
out in India every year.

Appeals from religious leaders would go a long way in curbing the trend as
they wield significant influence over the masses, experts say.

A fall in the male-female ratio could lead to grave social imbalances, they
add.

Experts and most religious gurus blamed the practice on the misuse of
advanced medical technology like ultrasound and sonography to detect the sex
of unborn babies and called upon the country's medical fraternity to end it.

The Shahi Imam of the Fatehpuri mosque in the Indian capital, Maulana Mufti
Mukaram, told the convention foeticide was not allowed by Islam. The
detection of the sex of the unborn child has to abolished to end this
criminal practice.

High Court Turns Down NRA Challenge to Brady Gun Law

WASHINGTON — The National Rifle Association lost a Supreme Court appeal
Monday over whether the government can retain information about gun buyers
under the landmark Brady gun control law.


The court, without comment, turned aside the NRA's challenge to the way the
FBI handles information gathered from on-the-spot background checks in gun
stores.

The NRA claimed the FBI's practice of keeping identities of legal gun buyers
on file for several months is illegal under the 1993 Brady Act itself, and is
akin to compiling a national registry of gun owners.

The Brady Act was a historic compromise in which firearm purchasers submit
to background checks in exchange for the assurance that, once cleared as
law-abiding, the government will not compile any record of their identities,
lawyers for the NRA wrote.

So-called instant checks replaced five-day waiting periods under the Brady
Act in 1998. The phone checks are performed through the FBI, while the
would-be gun buyer waits.

In planning for the change to instant checks, the Justice Department, under
then-Attorney General Janet Reno, decided the FBI would keep the records for
up to six months. Keeping the information would help the FBI debug the system
and audit its performance, according to the administrative rule the Justice
Department issued.

Keeping the log would also protect privacy by helping catch dealers or others
who might run unauthorized background checks on people who were not trying to
buy a gun, the department said.

The FBI eventually cut the length of time it would hang on to records to
three months, but the NRA said any record retention should be banned.

The NRA sued Reno in federal court on the day the instant checks took effect.
The court dismissed the NRA's claim, and a federal appeals court agreed last
year.

Two of the three judges on the appeals panel found nothing in the Brady Act
that unambiguously prohibits temporary retention of information about lawful
transactions. The dissenting judge called the FBI records retention an
unauthorized power grab by the Justice Department.

The NRA then appealed to the Supreme Court, setting up a common question for
the justices: How does a law passed by Congress square with government
regulations imposed later on?

The Justice Department urged the high court to let the lower ruling stand.
The appeals court correctly found that the FBI's buyer log was a temporary
list and was not intended to track gun buyers, the department's lawyers
argued.

Measured in terms of dollar values, more than half of the taxpayer-funded
Export-Import Bank's loans and long-term loan guarantees over the last two
years have gone to just one corporation – Boeing. Many of these loans and
loan guarantees have been used to subsidize transactions between Boeing and
the government of the People's Republic of China.

In the last two fiscal years, the Export-Import Bank has subsidized more than
50 Boeing sales, with loans and long-term loan guarantees totaling $8.9
billion in value.

The Export-Import Bank is a taxpayer-subsidized federal agency that
facilitates exports by direct loans to foreign buyers and by insuring or
guaranteeing private bank loans. In fiscal years 1999 and 2000, 59 percent of
the bank's loans and long-term guarantees were for Boeing sales. (Short-term
loan guarantees, not included in this figure, represent an additional, but
very minimal, part of the Export-Import Bank's activities. Some of these
short-term guarantees were also used to benefit Boeing.)

Not surprisingly, Boeing executives are now lobbying hard on Capitol Hill to
increase Export-Import Bank funding for fiscal year 2002 over the $633
million proposed by President Bush. Last year, President Clinton and the
Republican Congress gave the bank $863 million.

In requesting re-authorization and more money this year, Ex-Im has stressed
its aid to small businesses. In a choice of words worthy of a Clinton
appointee, outgoing Ex-Im Chairman and President James A. Harmon told a
congressional committee on May 2 that in fiscal year 2000, 86 percent of
Ex-Im Bank's transactions directly benefited small businesses. (Emphasis
added.) Ian Vasquez of the Cato Institute testified a few days later,
however, that, in terms of total dollars, 85.9 percent of Ex-Im's loans and
long-term guarantees went to just ten large companies, most with revenues in
the billions.

Boeing topped the list in fiscal 2000, receiving 42 percent of Export-Import
Bank loans and long-term loan guarantees. In fiscal 1999, the company
received a whopping 68 percent of the bank's loans and long-term guarantees.

Bechtel, a huge San Francisco-based engineering firm that is helping China
build nuclear power plants with the aid of Ex-Im loans, is the second largest
recipient of Export-Import Bank subsidies. Also in the top ten are Vice
President Dick Cheney's former employer, Halliburton, and General Electric,
which is moving jobs from Indiana to a new facility in Mexico built with aid
from the bank.

Boeing spokesman Cheryl Russell justified the large percentage of Ex-Im
financing used by Boeing by noting that Boeing is the No. 1 U.S. exporter of
manufactured goods. However, the airplane giant is 10 times more likely to
get Export-Import Bank financing than the typical U.S. exporter. Ex-Im
President Harmon testified that the bank finances 2 percent of all U.S.
exports. But Russell told Human Events that 20 percent of Boeing's overseas
sales get Ex-Im backing.

This, she says, is because we don't sell products that you can go out and
buy for $100,000. We sell big-ticket items. Some of these sales will be the
largest purchase that our overseas customers have ever made. Accordingly,
she says, Boeing sales couldn't happen without Ex-Im backing.

But, then, why is Boeing getting taxpayer funding through the Export-Import
Bank to make sales to some the world's wealthiest regimes and biggest
national economies?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of China, for example,
are two principal recipients of Export-Import Bank subsidies for the purchase
of Boeing aircraft. In 1999, a Saudi state-owned airline bought a fleet of
Boeing jets. The sale was financed with two loans worth a combined $1.9
billion that were guaranteed by U.S. taxpayers through the Export-Import
Bank. Ex-Im considered this a good risk to take on behalf of taxpayers in
order to boost Boeing's business.

But it means that people who are now paying exorbitant prices for gasoline
here in the United States, in part because the OPEC cartel to which Saudi
Arabia belongs is artificially suppressing the world supply of petroleum,
must also subsidize jumbo jets sold to the Saudi royal family.

Additionally, parts of those Boeing jets are actually made in China –
creating jobs there, not in the United States.

China, moreover, benefited directly from over $1.3 billion in Export-Import
Bank loan guarantees for its own Boeing

Hidden Details of Bush's Agenda

ATLANTA -- There's a potentially juicy confrontation brewing between the 
White House and the government's General Accounting Office. If it comes to 
pass -- or, rather, impasse -- root for the bureaucrats on this one. 

GAO, the government watchdog agency, has asked the Bush administration for a 
list of the persons who had input into Vice President Dick Cheney's National 
Energy Policy Development Group -- the ad hoc task force that ginned up the 
plan the president announced in mid-May.

That was the drill-and-burn, SUVs-rule program that Bush announced before he 
ran off to a couple of national parks to tree-hug as a photo-op 
environmentalist.

Some congressional Democrats, especially Rep. Henry Waxman, ranking member of 
the House Government Reform Committee, suspect the plan was drawn by energy 
industry executives and lobbyists, including major political donors.

Energy industries gave nearly $49 million to GOP candidates in the last 
election, $2.85 million to the Bush campaign. That was more than three times 
the tribute paid Democrats. 

Now trade groups are ponying up to join a jury-rigged Alliance for Energy and 
Economic Growth to push for enactment of the Bush policy, under the 
admonition of one key lobbyist that "the White House will have a long memory" 
about businesses that don't buy in.

What has been missing from the overall picture are the specific names of the 
persons the task force listened to and, on the surface evidence, harkened to.

Cheney's office is taking the position that there is no legal basis for GAO's 
request and that, anyway, the task force was private and none of the 
government's or the public's business.

And there it stands for now. We shall see.

Meantime, there's a curious aside to all this. There's no public outcry about 
conspiracy and secrecy. You have to excavate the inside pages of newspapers, 
and then only the big ones, for even a hint of the issue.

How different from the similar situation when Hillary Clinton was working up 
a plan for universal health coverage for the Clinton administration. You 
would have thought some evil coup was afoot -- and in that case without even 
the potential for paying off political contributors behind the closed doors.

The Clintons complained about a "Republican attack machine." Their gripe was 
sloughed off as sour grapes, but in fact there is a manifest double standard 
at work.

Not only is Cheney's dodg iness going largely unremarked. There has been no 
stink raised about the fact that Karl Rove, Bush's right-hand man, met with 
Intel executives who were seeking federal approval for a merger, then sold 
his slumped Intel stock at a get-well price after the merger was approved.

Lesser provocations than these during the Clinton administration produced 
instant congressional hearings and sent floods of talking-point e-mails and 
faxes to the ready mouths of the nation's informal but lockstep network of 
conservative talk radio.

There may or may not be a scandal gap between the Bush and Clinton 
administrations in the long run, but already it is clear that there is a huge 
gap in scandal-mongering.

Fugitive Caught At Vice President's Home

Secret Service Apprehends Fence-Jumper

WASHINGTON, 1:59 p.m. EDT June 23, 2001 -- A man who allegedly fled the scene
of a deadly head-on crash in Washington tried to hide on the grounds of the
vice president's home.

A police spokeswoman says he was apprehended by Secret Service police early
this morning after he jumped the fence surrounding the U.S. Naval
Observatory, where Vice President Dick Cheney lives.

The vice president wasn't home at the time.

The man is being charged with unlawful entry -- and involuntary manslaughter.
Police say the suspect was driving at a high rate of speed, going the wrong
way on nearby Massachusetts Avenue when he struck a car carrying three women.
One of them has died, and the other two are in serious condition.

Thought provoking but in the end it is falling on deaf ears in the establishment.  The 
CIA and other intelligence groups in this country have long been using the same 
tactics they label as terroristic and illegal.  They will continue to do so as long as

 BRkeep South Vietnam an independent nation, operating under the direction of

 BRContre Coup was the CIA's response to the realization that the Communists
 BRwere winning the war for the hearts and minds of the people. It also was a

 BRpsychological warfare, specifically, selective terror ­ the murder and
 BRmutilation of specific government officials.

 BRIn December 1963, Peer DeSilva arrived in Saigon as the CIA's station chief.
 BRHe claims to have been shocked by what he saw. In his autobiography, SubRosa,
 BRDeSilva describes how the VC had impaled a young boy, a village chief, and
 BRhis pregnant wife on sharp poles. To make sure this horrible sight would
 BRremain with the villagers, one of the terror squad used his machete to
 BRdisembowel the woman, spilling he fetus onto the ground.

 BRThe Vietcong, DeSilva said, were monstrous in the application of torture

wasting disease that seems to resemble this AIDS.so where did
genocide really begin?

you name it he had it all..I had proof his death was connected to
Toluene and Testor Company owned by Oil Company threated to sue a
reporter that was helping me and another reporter was hired away to
better job.

But I ran across this item about  breakdown in the immune system can be
caused by sharing of needles by cocaine users, and several different
things - linked to Kaposi Sarcoma.

Anyway when we got through Testor Glue who was making model cars for
little five year olds to put together, had to put a Harmful or Fatal
Warning on the glue...this man from Testor had called me screaming
that a kid could die if he ate a tablespoon of salt..lovely people.

Lovely people..but what got me when I was through,  it hit me - they
knew this stuff was killing kids and feared lawsuitsalso had a man
by name of Frank Lederer at Nationwide who had a son die and he wondered
about itpoison for profits.

Anyway someone just fund a way to murder a lot of children some who

When Did AIDS Begin?

AIDS research is filled with Holy Grails--developing a vaccine, creating
drugs that can cure the disease and, for both historical as well as
treatment reasons, finding out how and when the virus emerged in the
first place.

The earliest sample of HIV-infected human blood dates back to 1959, but
before that, the HIV family tree is bare.

Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory turned computers to the
task, and last week they came up with what they hope is the very bottom
of that tree. By measuring the rate at which the virus has mutated since
the epidemic began, they calculated that HIV made its first appearance
sometime around 1930.

The work does not establish whether the virus showed up first in humans
or in chimps, but the prevailing theory is that infected animals passed
the virus on to people.

If true, the earlier date casts serious doubt on several controversial
theories that purport to trace the beginning of the epidemic to the
1950s--specifically to experimental polio vaccines made from chimp
tissue and tested in parts of Africa. A more likely scenario: the virus
passed from animal to man during hunting and butchering when human and
infected chimp blood intermingled.

While a computer model is not as persuasive as a real virus, it may
be--given the lack of reliable blood samples from earlier decades--the
closest researchers will ever get to the roots of

A Study of Assassination
DEFINITION
Assassination is a term thought to be derived from Hashish, a drug
similar to marijuana, said to have been used by Hasan-Dan-Sabah to
induce motivation in his followers, who were assigned to carry out
political and other murders, usually at the c ost of their lives. It is
here used to describe the planned killing of a person who is not under
the legal jurisdiction of the killer, who is not physically in the hands
of the killer, who has been selected by a resistance organization for
death, and who has been selected by a resistance organization for death,
and whose death provides positive advantages to that organization.
EMPLOYMENT
Assassination is an extreme measure not normally used in clandestine
operations. It should be assumed that it will never be ordered or
authorized by any U.S. Headquarters, though the latter may in rare
instances agree to its execution by members of an ass ociated foreign
service.
This reticence is partly due to the necessity for committing
communications to paper. No assassination instructions should ever be
written or recorded. Consequently, the decision to employ this technique

divulged. Assassination of persons responsible for atrocities or
reprisals may be regarded as just punishment. Killi ng a political
leader whose burgeoning career is a clear and present danger to the
cause of freedom may be held necessary.
But assassination can seldom be employed with a clear conscience.
Persons who are morally squeamish should not attempt it.
CLASSIFICATIONS
The techniques employed will vary according to whether the subject is
unaware of his danger, aware but unguarded, or guarded. They will also
be affected by whether or not the assassin is to be killed with the
subject hereafter, assassinations in which the subject is unaware will
be termed simple; those where the subject is aware but unguarded will
be termed chase; those where the victim is guarded will be termed
guarded.
If the assassin is to die with the subject, the act will be called
lost. If the assassin is to escape, the adjective will be safe. It
should be noted that no compromises should exist here. The assassin must
not fall alive into enemy hands.
A further type division is caused by the need to conceal the fact that
the subject was actually the victim of assassination, rather than an
accident or natural causes. If such concealment is desirable the
operation will be called secret; if concealment is immaterial, the act
will be called open; while if the assassination requires publicity to
be effective it will be termed terroristic.
Following these definitions, the assassination of Julius Caesar was
safe, simple, and terroristic, while that of Huey Long was lost, guarded
and open. Obviously, successful secret assassinations are not recorded

This little kid loved making these model cars and you used this poison

The  Harmful or Fatal bit was put on two years aftaer this kid died; and
I drafted the legislation in our city, which my friend on council
introduced about air plane glue and use of same...and Harvey Alston
in Columbus went after those bastards too...

They put their warning on this stuff and if  you note in a book on
industrial hazards toluene can cause cateracts to the eyes - I stiall
remember people steam cleaning clothese and tahe intensive heat in their
eyes.
