Re: [darktable-user] newbie help with old negatives

Darktable 3.2.1

My take only using the eyedropper tool from the negadoctor module in the
dark green area of the larger tree and a slight correction on the
dynamic range slider (0.61 db). Colors are a bit oversaturated. You can
tweek this in the correction tab of that module.

Hello,

I am quite new to raw processing with darktable. My primary purpose is
to "scan" negative films with dslr, invert them, and then do some post
processing. This is just a hobby, so I don't expect stunning results
at start, I just need something to begin with.

I can achieve pretty good results with new films shot by myself with
just a few clicks.

But I am completely lost when I am trying to revie my father's 40+
year old negatives. I do the same basic steps what I do with my new
films (i.e. white balance the film base on the right side, do an
invert with picker choosing the now white stripe on the right, and
then I there I am with a dull image seemingly lacking color and
contrast, etc.

I would be very grateful, if you could help me out getting started,
i.e provide me with a basic, repeatable set of steps which would bring
me to a somewhat better image.

Here are the links to an example nef file and an exported jpg to the
starting point where I currently stand quite helpless.

- Updated user manual is coming soon™

## The Big Ones

- The *lighttable* view has been rewritten and the filmstrip reworked,
resulting in large performance gains, especially when using the
zoomable lighttable view. The culling view has also been rewritten from
scratch. Operations are smooth at any screen resolution up to 8k.

Many types of overlay are now possible on lighttable thumbs.
Different overlay information can be selected depending on the thumb
size on the lighttable. The different sizes can be set in the
preferences, so we can have no overlay at all for small thumbs and
full overlay when large thumbs are displayed. This is fully
   configurable.

Likewise, the tooltip information when hovering the thumbs can be
activated/deactivated based on the thumbs size.

- The lighttable modules have improved user interaction: buttons are
highlighted only when the context makes the action possible.

- A complete overhaul of the CSS has been done. This gives
darktable a professional look. This continues
the goal to make every single aspect of the UI themable using CSS.

- The Color Picker and
Location modules are updated to better fit into the new UI, and
most of the icons have been altered so as to be more
   visually balanced.

- The preference dialog has been fully reviewed and reorganized to
propose a better look and require less
scrolling. It is also possible to add some CSS rules directly into
the preference dialog to tweak darktable's look as well as
to directly control the font size and DPI values from the general
   preference tab.

A search field has been added to the shortcuts tab to help you find
the keyboard shortcut you want to customize.

- The new negadoctor module has been added to help inverting negative
   films.

- A new histogram display called RGB Parade has been added. At the
same time the histogram module height can now be adjusted with
   Ctrl+Scroll.

- The metadata feature has been made generic internally and has new
features. The user can now select the information they want to see
in the metadata editor. This selection is automatically mirrored in
the collection and image information modules.

Along with a new "notes" field, all the fields are multiline
Ctrl+Enter, sizable Ctrl+Scroll and can be set
as private (not exported). Metadata collection filters have an entry
"not defined". At import time it is possible to choose not to import
   some metadata.

- Image change detection has been made more reliable. This affects the
lighttable thumbnails change symbol and history collection filter,
which is now more accurate. In darkroom navigation, this avoids the
need to recalculate an image and save the xmp file when there is
   no change.

- A new down-sampling preference has been introduced for faster
response in darkroom. The preview is either computed at full
resolution (original, default value) or at 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 of the
original size. This allow for better performance but can slightly
hinder the precision of the guided filter masking.

Note that this is a very delicate feature to implement. A lot of
care has been taken to ensure all is correct when using down
sampling. It touches all areas of darktable, like masks, guided
filter, liquify controls, crop & rotate, lens and perspective
   corrections...

Re: [darktable-user] export to Google Photo

2020-03-22 Thread Jean-Luc Lacroix
I have been using rclone for 5 years now and I can only confirm that it
works flawlessly. Couple of remarks though:

- better transfer speeds can be achieved by using your own Google
Service Account key instead of the rclone's OAuth2 client_id that is
shared between all rclone users.
Go to https://console.developers.google.com/ to create your own
developper account credentials.

- despite the excellent multi-concurrency support in Go language in
which rclone is developed, Google is throttling back on the server side:
about 10 transactions a second if I remember correctly despite the fact
that Go can support millions of Goroutines at a very low memory cost.
Nothing much one can do about that.

Cheers and stay home!

Simple command line solution to sync a local folder with Google Photo.
You install it (I used the .deb), set it up with the token you receive
from Google, and it's done.

Basically, in DT I setup an export preset that saves to a specific
folder, that I want to be synced with Google.

If you have a basic knowledge of terminal, you will find it very easy.

Re: [darktable-user] darktable 3.0.0rc0 released

2019-11-07 Thread Jean-Luc Lacroix

As promised a quick review of my first thoughts on 3.0.0rc0 GUI.

Much clearer and leaner, the module options (fusion, masks etc...) are
more compact. The slider cursor and sliders are much improved and easier
to grab. Nice move.

If I may suggest a couple of improvements on the GUI, I think that
precious screen space can be reclaimed from the top part with the main
"lighttable | darkroom | other" menu. Its size and margin/padding could
be reduced to leave more space for the modules and picture.

The module quick search window is great, but I would put it in the "more
modules" section where we usually search for new modules so that more
space is left to the modules.

Where can I find documentation and css selectors used in 3.0.0? Is the
general layout hard coded or can it be tweaked in a user defined css file?

Nice work.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Just setting the watermark to "off" should be enough to remove the watermark
from the image.
After that, compressing the history stack will get rid of the original entry
in the stack (along with any other superseeded entries).

## Batch rename

I work with Linux and use ExifTool

files, as in the example below :

exiftool -v -recurse '-FileName<${DateTimeOriginal}_%c_%-8f.%e' -d
%Y-%m-%d_%H.%M.%S .JPG .NEF

(Actually I've been using for years a script that renames files
according to EXIF info, and directories according to ranges of
timestamps, recursively. It's invaluable to me.)

The %c provides a way to guarantee no overwrite of any file: if
destination exists, a number is added to make file unique and not
overwrite any other file.

Alternatives are

  * jhead
http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/ ,
  * exif  https://libexif.github.io/,
  * exiv2  http://www.exiv2.org/ .

## Exposure compensation, bracketing

Can you elaborate your specific need that connects exposure-compensation
with autobracketing?

Here's an example:

exiftool -v -recurse
'-FileName<${DateTimeOriginal}_EC${ExposureCompensation}_%-c_%-8f.%e' -d
'%Y-%m-%d_%H.%M.%S' /tmp/somefile.nef

 /tmp/somefile.nef
Setting new values from /tmp/somefile.nef
'/tmp/somefile.nef' --> '/tmp/2016-09-25_15.46.20_EC0__somefile.nef'
     1 image files updated

Hope this helps.

Re: [darktable-user] No Lens Correction

Is that your lens or camera that does not show in the lens correction

Do you have a lensfun file on your box? It usually resides in

Re: [darktable-user] Olympus Hi-Res Funktion?

2018-10-19 Thread Jean-Luc Lacroix

The user manual says:

[quote]
When image quality is set to RAW+JPEG, the camera saves a single RAW
image (extension “.ORI”) before combining it into a High Res Shot.
Pre-combination RAW images can only be played back on the software that
comes with this camera.

[unquote]

I just did test with my EM5.II and apparently, when you shoot in
RAW+JPEG, you'll have a 14 MB ORI file that you can open in DT and a 104
MB ORF file that I could not process in DT.

To compare the resolution I took a non-hi-res shot in RAW.The ORF file
of that shot has the same size has the ORI (hi-res) and I can see no
difference in quality/resolution.

Any clue from dev using Olympus on the list?

Not the db's. The package itself.

I think it is from projedt home on sourceforge (when remerbered

It is derived from the tar-file: lensfun-0.3.2.tar.gz

Congrats, you get to keep the pieces.
Don't turn Debian into FrankenDebian / slackware :)

Downgrading back will solve that geometry = "thoby fish-eye"

problem.

Well, well, now I dowgraded to lensfun 0.2.8 from the repository.
I don't know if its fine now. Now my gear isn supported any more.

Uhm, is that debian *old*stable?

Yes it is. I bought a graphic-card less than a year ago for open-cl
support, which isn't supported anymore with latest kernels.
So far no idea on this topc.

There are the xml files in /usr/share/lensfun/ and
in /var/lib/lensfun-updates/version_1 which I need both for my camera
gear. But it looks like lensfun 0.2.8 doesn't care about later.

Not surprising, given just how old debian oldstable is...

I'd try http://wilson.bronger.org/db/version_0.tar.bz but no idea how
up-to-date it is.

wilson.bronger.org ist also offline at the moment. Is there away to
update the db-files in lensfun 0.2.8? is it compatible with db files
0.3.2 at all?

Try to upgrade dt to the latest stable version (2.4.1).

dt 2.2.1 is the current version available on the Stretch repo. Even if
you take the stretch-backport version you will only get 2.2.5. With dt
it's always better to use the current release. Compile it from the

Search for "Current release from source" in:

Also upgrade the lensfun db --> $ lensfun-update-data (from

I am using i7-7700k with NVIDIA GTX 750Ti. There is a 30% performance
improvement in the pixelpipe when using NVIDIA with opencl compared to CPU
only. And the GTX 750Ti is not the fastet card. So I guess that you can speed
up DT easily by 50% with the proper graphics card.

GPU might just be the upgrade with the biggest impact for RAW
processing. To have that impact it will need not only the drivers to
work, but also the corresponding OpenCL part...
...

This is exactly what you should keep in mind. As much RAM as you can
afford, and an openCL capable graphics card. 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD work
nicely in my computer.

I run darktable with an 4-core AMD processor and an AMD-RX 460 graphics
card in Ubuntu 16.04.3 with the amdgpu-pro driver (just the openCL part)

I copied some time ago a sort of test-suite, which shows that photo
export is more than four times faster on my PC with openCL enabled.

1.899 secs without openCL
0.442 secs with openCL

You usually do not export just one photo, and openCL should also
accelerate other processing tasks.

If you wish I can send you the zipped test per mail.

my color profiles or the standard ones.

Using these profiles with any substantial base curve gives rather
strong saturation, so I also usually auto-apply the color
correction module with saturation set to something like 0.85, for
something pretty close to out-of-camera rendering.

I used the method outlined here to create the profiles:
