Bug#340688: /etc/init.d/initrd-tools.sh exits

2005-11-25 Thread Thomas Hood
Package: initrd-tools
Version: 0.1.84

Debian Policy states (§9.3.1):

be explicitly run by `sh' in all other runlevels.

Accordingly, .sh scripts run from /etc/rcS.d/ should not do exit.

Bug#339777: #339777 can't read errorCode: no such variable

2005-11-25 Thread adrian
Are you sure it's this fix that broke it and not one of the previous
ones? i.e. are you running 4.0.1-4? -2 and -3 are both broken but
-4 works for myself and the two other bug submitters for plain files
and files in CVS.The tmpfile function now has an incrementing
count in it to try and ensure uniqueness (and if someone is malicously
creating files we will not overwrite them).

Thanks,

Bug#340694: emacs-goodies-el: home-end-enable defcustom clobbers bindings.

2005-11-25 Thread Matt Hodges
Package: emacs-goodies-el
Version: 26.4-1
Severity: normal

The defcustom for home-end-enable binds [end] to end-of-line and
[home] to beginning-of-line when home-end-enable is nil. This matters
for the emacs-snapshot package where the default bindings are to
move-end-of-line and move-beginning-of-line.

Perhaps the values of (key-binding [end]) and (key-binding [home])
should be stored and used for the nil home-end-enable case?

Thanks,

Matt

According to the FHS, ``/usr is shareable, read-only data''. So FAI
should not by default try to write anything in /usr and place it's
 nfsroot there. See #309554.

Could you elaborate on why you believe this is an FHS violation? Is the fai
nfsroot not shareable, or is it not read-only? (I would expect an nfsroot
image to be both...)

Bug#340698: growisofs: misfeature: non-overridable refusal to write 50% of a DL DVD

2005-11-25 Thread Roland Turner
Package: dvd+rw-tools
Version: 5.21.4.10.8-1
Severity: normal

When writing to a DL DVD, growisofs checks whether the data to be
written will occupy 50% of the disk and, if not, refuses the
write operation with the message:

use single layer media for this recording

This is good advice for penny-pinchers but when the DVD is being
used as an offsite backup medium by an automated process, saving a
few dollars is not revelant. The fact that this advice cannot be
overridden (e.g. by a --force-wasteful-write-to-dl-dvd option) makes
this misfeature serious enough to describe it as a bug.

(Background to explain why this is an issue: Our backup job runs on
Thursday nights. Generating the backup data, writing it and then
reading it back to verify it takes a number of hours. Someone visits
on Fridays to take the written disk offsite and insert a new blank.
The amount of data to be written varies from week to week (sometimes
more than 4.7GB, sometimes less) and isn't determined until six days
after the blank disc is inserted. The person who rotates the disc
(a) does not have a supply of single layer DVDs to insert and, even
if he did, (b) can't hang around for hours while the job re-runs.)

Bug#340699: firestarter breaks nis

2005-11-25 Thread Johannes Wiedersich

Subject: firestarter breaks nis
Package: firestarter
Version: 1.0.3-1.1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Installation of firestarter breaks nis.

We have as configuration a nis server on a private network. Firestarter
is installed and options are set to allow all conections on that private
network.
The nis clients are set up with default debian configuration (+ lines
are added manually to /etc/passwd etc. as described in the documentation
to nis).

nis doesn't work; ie. a running nis still works, but when the system is
restarted nis breaks:

student2:/etc# /etc/init.d/nis restart
Starting NIS services: ypbind [binding to YP server .. backgrounded]

nis doesn't work and displays:

YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound

Noone can any longer login into the system via nis.
No information whatever is displayed in events or other in firestarter,
that any connection was refused or else.

Stopping the firewall, everything is working again:

student2:~# /etc/init.d/firestarter stop
Stopping the Firestarter firewall:done.
student2:~# /etc/init.d/nis restart
Starting NIS services: ypbind

Unfortunately, it took me some months to locate this problem: whenever
nis is started BEFORE firestarter it continues to work; the problem only
occurs, when nis is started AFTER firestarter (eg. after the next
reboot). Furthermore, no hints are found in firestarter's events list or
in the log-files. I suspect that other services apart from nis might be
affected as well.

WORKAROUND:
add the line

domain name_of_nis-domain server 192.168.0.xxx

to the configuration file /etc/yp.conf and nis is working as expected:

student2:/etc# /etc/init.d/nis restart
Starting NIS services: ypbind

Please, keep improving that otherwise very useful and easy-to-set-up
application!

Johannes

Bug#340702: geomview: FTBFS on GNU/kFreeBSD

2005-11-25 Thread Petr Salinger
Package: geomview
Severity: important
Version: 1.8.1-10
Tags: patch

Hi,

the current version of geomview fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD.

It needs updated config.guess, config.sub and small tweaks.
Please find attached patch with tweaks.

For config.guess and config.sub is needed a version
from this year, which is available in the autotools-dev
packages that are in current sarge, and sid.

You can simply copy them manually, but it can also be done
automatically using the method described in
/usr/share/doc/autotools-dev/README.Debian.gz

It would also be nice if you can ask upstream
to include this changes.

Thanks in advance

Petr

Bug#279168: reportbug (sarge) fails to deliver report and does so silently

2005-11-25 Thread Johannes Wiedersich

This report appears to be a dupe of 316608 (fixed in sid) anyway...

No, opposed to 316608, here no mail is sent at all, all data typed into
the bug report is lost.

IMHO this should be fixed in sarge via a security update. Users of
debian trying to report bugs will be scared away, when their carefully
crafted bug reports are sent into nirvana without error message or
producing any kind of log-report.

Bug#330894: Isn't this fixed in the unstable version of inkscape?

2005-11-25 Thread Guido Trotter

Hi!

You wrote two times in the changelog that this issue is resolved:

Changes:
 inkscape (0.43-1) unstable; urgency=high

   * urgency=high since this version fixes the buffer overflow discovered by
Joxean Koret (see CVE-2005-3737, debian bug 330894).

Changes:
 inkscape (0.42.2+0.43pre1-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * Just for the record: inkscape version 0.42 and newer is not vulnerable to
the security bug mentioned in Bug #321501.

So I'm wondering: why can't this bug be closed, with the appropriate version
tag?
This would also help migrating inkscape into testing, which it cannot do till
this bug remains open...

Thanks,

Guido

Bug#340704: rar support violates DFSG #4

2005-11-25 Thread Robert Millan
Package: ark
Severity: serious
Justification: DFSG #4

This package has a Suggests: rar tag. If it has the functionality to create
rar archives via rar, this is a serious problem, because it is encouraging users
to create trap archives that can't be extracted with free software. I believe
this is a violation of DFSG #4 (Our priorities are our users and free
software) since we put:

Bug#340705: rar support violates DFSG #4

Justification: DFSG #4

This package has a Suggests: rar tag. If it has the functionality to create
rar archives via rar, this is a serious problem, because it is encouraging users

Comments/Problems:

I chose 'expert' at the boot prompt and installed the 2.6.12-386 kernel.
Everything went smoothly except for the following -

#Network - My home network is 2 PCs - the main one a gateway connected to the
internet via a cable modem (dhcp); the secondary one a client connected to the
gateway via ethernet (static ip). For this install I temporarily reversed the
roles of these machines, so that I could do it from behind a firewall (Sarge is
installed on the secondary machine). I left all the network cards alone (see
lspci output above) and chose manual network configuration.
The problem I had was with the loading of the nic modules at runtime. The
installer detected both network cards correctly, but because I only needed one
interface I deselected the Linksys (tulip) card (normally eth0). But when the
system booted for the first time no nic or ip modules were loaded. There was
also no odd messages in /var/log/syslog to indicate any network setup problems.
I didn't really know how to troubleshoot this so I just wiped and re-installed,
this time keeping both modules that the installer offers (tulip and 8139too).
The network is now being set up but there is a third driver being loaded -
8139cp. This shouldn't be there because it is not the right module for the
chipset on the Realtek card I have. I have a feeling that this mismatched
module is the one being used, because the network performance is below what it
usually is.
Again, there are no messages in syslog, other than the notifications of modules
being loaded. Could it be that the installer has a problem with networking if
you don't set up an eth0 interface and just have eth1? I have a feeling then
that the installer can have trouble setting up the network correctly on
machines with multiple interfaces. To avoid this I think I will

Firestarter is a firewalling tool; nis is a network application. These are
not unrelated software.

Given that you can break *any* network application by means of a
misconfigured firewall, and given that your stated solution for this bug was
to make a change to your *nis* config, not to your firestarter config, I
don't see any reason to treat this as a grave bug, either.

Bug#340713: bugs.debian.org: Done bug is shown as outstanding; attracts bogus followups

the first bug displayed is marked as Done (Fixed in an upload more than
an month ago), but it is still listed as Outstanding. It should be
listed as Resolved.

This has the bad effect that everybody who encountered a problem with
tetex-bin's postinst in the last weeks posted their bug as a Followup-to
that bug. Of course this prevents its being archived, and so it keeps
it on top of the list, and so people continue to post into it... endless
loop.

It would be great if that could be investigated and fixed.

Bug#340279: Build problems on sarti (was: Bug#334613: failed install prevents building of another package that has tetex-bin as build-depends)

Dear Debian admins,

Note that the user mixed things up; it's #340279.

Failure to install tetex-bin breaks the build-depend requirements of package
 planner on hppa.
 http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?pkg=plannerver=0.13-3arch=hppastamp=1132846224file=logas=raw
 Below is the stderr output:

 Setting up tetex-bin (3.0-10.1) ...

This shows that the same formats fail to build that failed with the
original bugreport. So maybe it is in fact not so indeterministic as I
first thought, and not a hardware failure but a real bug. However:

fmtutil failed. Output has been stored in
 /tmp/tetex.postinst.XXxxXcHb
Please include this file if you report a bug.

we need these temporary files. Without that there is hardly a chance to
debug this. I just tried that the formats are built fine in paer's sid

(although I obviously couldn't do it as root, but only in my homedir).

Subject: firestarter breaks nis

Firestarter is a firewalling tool; nis is a network application. These are
not unrelated software.

Given that you can break *any* network application by means of a
misconfigured firewall, and given that your stated solution for this bug was
to make a change to your *nis* config, not to your firestarter config, I
don't see any reason to treat this as a grave bug, either.

This is a workaround, not a solution.

In fact installation/start of firestarter breaks an otherwise working
configuration in nis. The really annoying part of the problem is that no
hints of what gets wrong is displayed by firestarter; no events etc.

The firewall is set up correctly, allowing all connections to the
desired private network. I would prefer to change the configuration via
firestarter, not nis. How should one set up firestarter to allow
broadcassting to 192.168.0.255 for a nis server apart from allowing all
connections to and from 192.168.0.0/24?

To sum it up: the firewall is configured correctly, shows no logs and
nevertheless another application is broken. Problems like this are
extremely difficult to track down for system administrators. I think
this justifies asking for an update of sarge.

Thanks for your quick reply and help.

Johannes

NB: According to reportbug:
breaks unrelated software: breaks unrelated software on the system
(packages that have a dependency relationship are not unrelated)

I used this definition of 'unrelated'. Sorry if this was wrong.

It is not enough that you provide a patch. They will surely reject the

The current code uses the __GLIBC__ macro here and there (well, sometimes
in combination with __GNU__, which is redundant). It will help if you
could explain why it does not work without the patch, and why it works
on Linux-based systems.

Also, it would help if you could tell whether this is a single .zip file

I checked on GNU/kFreeBSD, it worked.

Bug#340719: tgif: pstoepsi broken

2005-11-25 Thread Toni Mueller
Package: tgif
Version: 1:4.1.44-4
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello,

the program pstoepsi is broken in several ways:

- When using the option -2x, checking for the source
file is done in an incorrect way. The attached patch
  fixes this.

- The program assumes that it can use a program pbmtoepsi
has an option -scale, which the version included with
Debian has not. Thus, scaling breaks.

- In the branch at line 98, there is a redundant setting of
STYLE, which the patch also fixes, but it doesn't fix
the case that later on, the overwritten value of STYLE
is tested against. If this is simply a piece of dead code,
or if this hides another problem, I didn't investigate.

Best,

Package: ftgl
Severity: important
Version: 2.1.2-2

Hi,

the current version of ftgl fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD.

It needs updated config.guess, config.sub and small tweak:

For config.guess and config.sub is needed a version
from this year, which is available in the autotools-dev
packages that are in current sarge, and sid.

You can simply copy them manually, but it can also be done
automatically using the method described in
/usr/share/doc/autotools-dev/README.Debian.gz

It would also be nice if you can ask upstream
to include this changes.

Thanks in advance

Petr

to integrate this one:

Bug#340712: [Pkg-firebird-general] Bug#340712: firebird2-server-common: binary file security.fdb is not a config file but uses ucf!

Hi, Hamish,

Hamish Moffatt wrote:
 Package: firebird2-server-common
 Version: 1.5.2-10
 Severity: important

Do you care to justify the severity?

On upgrade, firebird2-server-common asked me what to do with
security.fdb. However it's a binary file, so things like diff
don't make sense. I think managing this file as a conffile is just
 wrong.

diff makes no sense, yes. But replacing the password database on upgrade is
even worse.

If you want to make merges possible then it would be better to do it
 with SQL dumps.

Practically, the packaged security.fdb changes only when upstream changes it -
i.e. on new upstream releases, so merges are not what I meant by marking
security.fdb as a conffile.

However, I agree that merges are the way to go. hints/ideas/patches are warmly
welcome.

Bug#340721: helix-player points to non-free software instead of playing movie

2005-11-25 Thread W. Borgert
Package: helix-player
Version: 1.0.4-1sarge1
Severity: normal

On visiting http://www.wdr.de/tv/monitor/real.phtml with Mozilla
Firefox and clicking on abspielen (play), no movie is shown -
instead an error message box is presented:

Component Missing

The player does not have the capabilities
to play back this content.

[Check for Updates...] [Details...]

[Help] [OK]

Clicking on Check for Updates... leads to the page
http://www.real.com/linux, that promotes non-free software to
play the movie. One can download an i386 binary (no link to any
other platform nor source code) and that's it.

If helix-player cannot support the movie format, that's OK,
but a Debian package should not promote download non-free
software from a third party, IMHO. Plus: without any notice,
that this is not part of Debian, and that Debian cannot ensure
security for such software, etc.

-4 works for myself and the two other bug submitters for plain files
and files in CVS.The tmpfile function now has an incrementing

creating files we will not overwrite them).

Bug#340724: Missing commands: Watch Thread / Ignore Thread

2005-11-25 Thread Vlada Macek
Package: mozilla-thunderbird
Version: 1.0.2-2.sarge1.0.7

I was unable to find the command to Watch current thread or to Ignore
it. No UI for it seem to be accessible by a user -- with one exception:
In View / Threads menu there are two items: Watched Thread with Unread
and Ignored Threads. But there are the viewing selection commands, not
the flagging ones.

According to some discussions found on the Net, the Watch Thread
command should be somewhere near the bottom of the Message menu.

In case I was just blind to see what I was after, please consider this
bug report as the one informing the developers that the feature is not
as intuitive as it should be. :-)

Bug#340725: metacity: fails to raise windows (from gaim emacs)

2005-11-25 Thread Nick Craig-Wood
Package: metacity
Version: 1:2.12.1-1
Severity: important

Metacity a while ago stopped raising my gaim windows. If gaim hasn't
got the focus, then the gaim windows don't get raised to the top of my
window pile and I don't notice them (I have lots of windows on my
desktop)!

This problem can also be demonstrated in emacs also

  Run emacs
  Load a file (^XF file1)
Load another file in a new window (^X5F file2)
Bring the first emacs window to the top by clicking in it
Now load the second file in a new window again (^X5F file2)

What should happen, and used to happen is that the second emacs
window comes to the top.

Now nothing appears to happen.

Bug#340726: nsca: please provide a way to install send_nsca without nagios + dependencies

2005-11-25 Thread Stephen Gran
Package: nsca
Severity: normal

Hello,

I am trying right now to set up a few distributed network test stations.
The idea is that they will check a few network services and report the
remote availability to a central nagios server, via send_nsca. While
this binary does not itself need anything to speak of, trying to apt-get
install it means that I pull in nagios, apache, and a half million other
things.

I can see two ways to resolve this:

split send_nsca and nsca into two packages (which seems silly, as they
would have one binary apiece, but is not unprecedented), or relax the
depends to a recommends. I think the first is actually a better option
as admins installing nsca will actually want it to be useful, and nsca
itself is only useful on the nagios host.

Thanks,

Bug#340729: sylpheed-claws-gtk2: links to libfreetype6, which is going away

2005-11-25 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: sylpheed-claws-gtk2
Version: 1.9.100-1
Severity: grave

Hi Ricardo,

As you know, the sylpheed-claws-gtk2 package currently depends on
libfreetype6, but it does not use it. This dependency is being pulled in
because the package uses libtool convenience libs with building, and there
is no proper solution for this that works portably without pulling in
indirect library dependencies.

As you approved on IRC, attached is a patch which uses -Wl,--as-needed as a
hack to get ld to drop unneeded library dependencies from the resulting
binaries. I will be uploading an NMU with this patch shortly.

Bug#267632: Mentioning the PATH thingy in README.Debian

2005-11-25 Thread Benjamin Drieu

Hey there,

to fix this bug, what about mentioning the issue in README.Debian,
something like :

To enable ccache, just prepend /usr/lib/ccache in your PATH
environment variable, like

  export PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH

I think this would help users like me who were confused by upstream
instructions in manpage. Alternatively, patching the man page with
Debian specific instructions would be nice too.

Cheers,
Benjamin

The problem with that is that the dummy package won't necessarily be
installed -- unless you set up circular dependencies, but we're trying
 to cut down on those.

Yes, I know it it's necessarily installed, but I thought that it was a
good enough compromise (for simplicity and don't get repeated files). I never
thought about circular dependencies, don't worry ;-)

Given that the documentation is still pretty
small in an absolute sense, it should be okay to leave it as it is and
just rename the doc-base files as I suggested. Alternatively, you
could split it out into a new -common or -doc package, but the
ftpmasters might consider that to be overkill.

We're currently discussing how to package Ruby libraries in
[EMAIL PROTECTED], that's why I haven't uploaded a new version yet. I think
I'm going to fix the doc-base thing, and in another upload, when we have the
proposal for the new Ruby policy, I'll fix it completely.

Bug#340608: fai: nfsroot should not be in /usr

2005-11-25 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Scribit Steve Langasek dies 25/11/2005 hora 00:56:
According to the FHS, ``/usr is shareable, read-only data''. So FAI
should not by default try to write anything in /usr and place it's
  nfsroot there. See #309554.
Could you elaborate on why you believe this is an FHS violation?

My /usr is only rw when doing dpkg operations. After having successfully
installed the fai packaged, running the fai-setup -v fails because /usr
is again ro.

I think the fact that a user-triggered operation has to write in /usr is
the point why there is FHS violation.

Is the fai nfsroot not shareable, or is it not read-only? (I would
expect an nfsroot image to be both...)

It is not read-only, at least for the -k option of fai-setup, that
install a new kernel in the nfsroot. So the nfsroot is clearly a
read-write object the user can modify and update... It belongs either to
/var or /srv (the latter I prefer, as it is clearly data for a service
exposed by the system).

Bug#340704: rar support violates DFSG #4

2005-11-25 Thread Robert Millan

Sorry, I have to disagree with these bug severities; Suggests: are just not
important enough in our packaging system to treat them as release-critical,

Hi Steve,

My concern is about the rar writing support itself, not about Suggests. The
Suggests tag is just an indication that either the application supports
generating rar archives (or that there's a mistake, and the maintainer just
mean to suggest unrar instead).

 and it is generally considered
acceptable to Suggest: non-free packages from main anyway.

Well, that's not the problem. If the application needs unrar to extract rar
archives, then suggesting unrar is ok [1]. It's the fact that the application
supports creating rar archives that I believe violates the DFSG.

Does this explanation satisfy you? If it does, I'd like to rise the severity
back to serious (I don't think it's an issue for the release, being only 4
bugs).

OTOH, if you think my interpretation of DFSG is inadequate, I could try to
expose it better, and we could also move this to -legal (perhaps I should have
started there in first place).

Thanks!

[1] In fact, unrar is one of the two non-free packages whose distribution by
  Debian I would personaly endorse.

Bug#339146: library package needs to be renamed (libstdc++ allocator change)

2005-11-25 Thread Steve Langasek
severity 339146 important
retitle 339146 anjuta: please don't put shared libraries in the same binary
package with your application
thanks

This bug appears to be a false-positive; the anjuta package is not a library
package. It contains some .so objects under /usr/lib/anjuta, but in
unstable it provides no -dev package that anyone could use to link against
these libraries. Given that there are consequently no reverse-dependencies,
I don't believe a rename is required here.

However, in experimental I see that there *is* an anjuta-dev package; but
the libs are still in the main anjuta package, which is bad precisely
because it's a problem for anyone trying to depend on these libs when they
go through an ABI change.

If we are to support packages linking against these libraries, the libs
should be split into their own package (and for that matter, moved to
/usr/lib). If their only use is for plugins or similar, though, then this
probably isn't necessary after all.

Cheers,

Hi,

As I am not yet a developer (doesn't take that long anymore) and as I
have pretty much experience with ldap, I think I can take this over. So
I retitled the bug to ITA.

Are you willing to sponsor uploads if there is no DD in the maintainer

Last question about this: What about openldap 2.1.30 ?

Can you add me to the svn repository ?

It is not enough that you provide a patch. They will surely reject the
patch, as apparently they don't want to include unistd.h unconditionally.

The current code uses the __GLIBC__ macro here and there (well, sometimes
in combination with __GNU__, which is redundant). It will help if you
could explain why it does not work without the patch, and why it works
on Linux-based systems.

The problem is that off_t is a 64-bit type on GNU/kFreeBSD, whereas it
is a 32-bit type on GNU/Linux. Thus lseek takes a 64-bit argument. If
you don't include unistd.h, the lseek function is not defined, and gcc
assumes that it takes int (32-bit) for its arguments, which is wrong
there. BTW, even on GNU/Linux, gcc warns with an implicit definition of
the lseek function.

As Stefan Fritsch already noted, squidGuard doesn't see any language

Yes. With Firefox, if I set the languages [fr], [fr_FR], [en] in that exact

With Konqueror I have the messages in french, but I can't find what the

control center the language settings are simply defined by a country's name,
France here)

Yes, there is no Image/Color.php file in the Debian package that I
