Bug#343085: exim4: Exim SMTP_AUTH hangs since today...

No, it used /dev/urandom this time (which quite surprised me, since I used the same packages that were installed when Exim hang using /dev/random). It seems I have a little mixup here, so I will restest the situation with verified packages. The problems begin when you're on a high-volume mail server and the delivery process drain entropy so fast that the key generation fails to gather the needed number of bits in a reasonable time period. How long does your server take to refill the pool from zero to 4096? OK, with all those different packages patched and recompiled during the last hours, I got a little knot in my brain. So _of course_ it used /dev/urandom with your fix, as this was the whole point of the patch. (Forgive me for being a little slow sometimes.) Question again: does this patch qualify for an update of the Exim4 packages in Sarge with the next point release? I would even like to see a security update, since without this patch you can remotely block an Debian-Exim mailserver by opening severy SSL connections and thus emptying the entropy pool, causing any further SSL transaction of Exim4 to hang, because the unpatched tls-gnu.c uses /dev/random for its RSA seed. Bug#350636: code that reproduces the bug and more info
I was able to reproduce the bug with the following code (compile: g++ -Wall -O2 x.cpp) #include stdio.h #include fstream typedef unsigned int Uint32; inline Uint32 read_u32(std::istream in) { Uint32 i; in.read((char*)i, 4); return i; } inline float read_float(std::istream in) { Uint32 u = read_u32(in); return *(float*)(u); } int main() { std::ifstream in(test); for (int i = 0; i 2; ++i) { float x = read_float(in); float y = read_float(in); float z = read_float(in); printf(x=%f y=%f z=%f\n, x, y, z); } return 0; } with this test file: (hexdump test) (2x the float values 1.0, nearly 1.0, and -1) 000 3f80 3f7f bf80 3f80 010 3f7f bf80 the output is: x=0.00 y=1.00 z=1.00 x=-1.00 y=1.00 z=1.00 which is clearly wrong. the first x should be 1.0 In fact the values for x,y,z are all wrong, because the stored values are 1,1,-1 in that order, not -1,1,1. Compiling the code with -O1 gives the correct output. Seems to have something to do with parameter order on the printf call or something the like. The comments above still apply. Sorry, but I patched and recompiled the exim4-package from Sarge, but any encrypted mail transfer nearly empties the entropy pool. Again, this is expected -- I tried to fix the blocking problem, not the entropy consumption as such. The entropy consumption is really a libgcrypt issue; it does not make much sense to work around it in each application individually. Let me sum up all the pieces to see, if I get everything in the right way. a) Exim uses GnuTLS in a way, which causes it to use /dev/random to aquire strictly random bytes on every encrypted connection b) GnuTLS uses much more random bytes to initialize itself than OpenSSL. A combination of A and B leads to a possible hole for a DoS attack, if I am able to drain the entropy pool, because of A, Exim will block until enough entropy is regathered. While fixing A is generally a Good Idea (in my opinion), so Exim does not block if there is no entropy available (because of whatever reason). But the real winner would be a fix to B so that the entropy pool does not get drained so fast and would not only benefit Exim but any other program using GnuTLS. Is this summary correct so far? Bug#350657: r-base: download.packages() assumes /usr/local/lib/R is writeable
Package: r-base Version: 2.2.1-2 Severity: normal This bug can be considered to be (1) incorrect handling of a user error, or (2) incorrect documentation, or (3) missing Debian documentation. (Depending on one's mood, I suppose.) Running download.packages(vcd) leads to (a) a warning that it is going to attempt to write to /usr/local/lib/R, which is not a directory to which Debian users normally have write permission. Then, errors from lack of permission. (b) Note that according to the R documentation, lib is a required argument without a default, so an error should be reported even be before a download is attempted. (c) The resulting error message could be more helpful; it could suggest a change to the lib argument or perhaps other things. So, if the intent is to have a default argument for lib, it should be specified in help(install.packages); if not, it should return an error. If the intent is to install into /usr/local/lib/R on Linux boxes, then the Debian package ought to note somewhere (probably in /usr/share/doc/r-base/README.Debian) that users need to be in group staff to be able to install R packages to the default directories. install.packages(vcd) Warning in install.packages(vcd) : argument 'lib' is missing: using /usr/local/lib/R/site-library --- Please select a CRAN mirror for use in this session --- Loading Tcl/Tk interface ... done trying URL 'http://cran.uk.r-project.org/src/contrib/vcd_0.9-7.tar.gz' Content type 'application/x-gzip' length 771160 bytes opened URL == downloaded 753Kb mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/lib/R/site-library/00LOCK': Permission denied ERROR: failed to lock directory '/usr/local/lib/R/site-library' for modifying The downloaded packages are in /tmp/RtmpCVx2nl/downloaded_packages Warning messages: 1: installation of package 'vcd' had non-zero exit status in: install.packages(vcd) 2: cannot create HTML package index in: tools:::unix.packages.html(.Library) -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages r-base depends on: ii r-base-core 2.2.1-2GNU R core of statistical computin ii r-recommended 2.2.1-2GNU R collection of recommended pa Versions of packages r-base recommends: pn r-base-html none (no description available) pn r-base-latex none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#350660: synaptic: non-root mode
Package: synaptic Version: 0.57.7.1 Severity: wishlist It would be great to have a non-root mode for synaptic, to allow browsing of the package lists by non-superusers. The CLI alternative to synaptic, aptitude(8), allows this. Installing/removing would of course be disabled. As a bonus, it could even allow actions (such as upgrades etc) to be queued and then saved to a file, which could subsequently be loaded when the program is run as root. The saved actions file could be a generic shell script that just runs dpkg(1). The advantage of this scheme is that users get a pretty GUI to browse the package lists and make selections. They do not need to be worried about breaking their system through inadvertent interactions or a bug in synaptic, because it does not run as root. Administrators can then review the selections (via their favourite text editor) and update the system from a comfortable environment with trusted tools (ie a CLI and dpkg). Just a thought. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#350661: vlock leaks info about password (PIN) length when using libpam-opensc
Package: vlock Version: 1.3-8 Severity: normal I'm not entirely clear whether this bug should be a vlock bug or a libpam-opensc bug. Since i only see the behavior directly in vlock, however (neither xscreensaver nor login leak this information), this makes me think it's a vlock problem and not a libpam-opensc problem. when i use vlock with libpam-opensc, if the passphrase given is a different length than the user's actual passphrase, vlock actually reports that information in the error messages. i'm running a patched version of vlock right now (see bug #318507), but even if i run a vanilla 1.3-8 vlock (from an unpacked deb), i get the same error messages printed to the console. Here's a transcript of such an interaction (using vlock 1.3-8): [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ src/vlock/clean-deb/root/usr/bin/vlock This TTY is now locked. That yields the following error: sc_pkcs15_verify_pin: Invalid PIN length i then authenticated correctly, and locked again. For the second vlock auth failure, i deliberately chose a wrong passphrase that has the same character count as the actual PIN on the card. This results instead with two lines of printed error: sec.c:204:sc_pin_cmd: returning with: PIN code or key incorrect sc_pkcs15_verify_pin: PIN code or key incorrect so what i'm seeing here is that vlock is leaking information about the length of the passphrase when this PAM module is in use. Bug#350664: xterm: Escape sequence does not always change cursor colour
Package: xterm Version: 208-3.1 Severity: minor The escape sequence for changing the cursor colour does not work when you are trying to change the cursor colour to the same colour as the foreground text. eg. $ xterm -fg green -bg black xterm$ echo -ne \E]12;red\007 xterm$ echo -ne \E]12;green\007 xterm$ echo -ne \E]12;blue\007 xterm$ echo -ne \E]12;green\007 The lines that should set the cursor to green do nothing. The problem appears to be in charproc.c in set_cursor_gcs() where it checks to see if the cursor colour is different from the foreground and background colour. Bug#350665: kernel-package: check for -j in MAKEFLAGS is not quite correct
Package: kernel-package Version: 10.033 Severity: normal make-kpkg has checks to make sure that MAKEFLAGS and MFLAGS do not contain -j. They are not quite correct. I have MAKEFLAGS set to kj3. This accords with the documentation in the make info page, which e.g. gives the example if you do `make -ks', then `MAKEFLAGS' gets the value `ks'. However, with this setting of MAKEFLAGS, 'make-kpkg kernel_image' gives a segfault(!) and the actual cause is extremely hard to discern. (I had to read through make-kpkg's source.) The manual also has a paragraph describing the exact rules make uses for parsing MAKEFLAGS, which begins When `make' interprets the value of `MAKEFLAGS'; I don't have copy/paste capability right now so I'll let you find it yourself with that clue... Contrariwise, the manual also mentions that GNU make does not respect the MFLAGS variable -- it sets it for compatibility, but if you set it yourself it will ignore you. So make-kpkg's check for MFLAGS is probably pointless. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11frances2 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages kernel-package depends on: ii dpkg 1.13.11.1 package maintenance system for Deb ii dpkg-dev 1.13.11.1 package building tools for Debian ii file 4.15-2 Determines file type using magic ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:4.0.2-2 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-2.95 [c-compiler] 1:2.95.4-24The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.2 [c-compiler] 1:3.2.3-9 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.3 [c-compiler] 1:3.3.6-12 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.4 [c-compiler] 3.4.5-2The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.0 [c-compiler] 4.0.2-7The GNU C compiler ii gettext 0.14.5-2 GNU Internationalization utilities ii make 3.80+3.81.b4-1 The GNU version of the make util ii perl 5.8.7-10 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii po-debconf0.9.2 manage translated Debconf template Versions of packages kernel-package recommends: ii bzip2 1.0.3-2high-quality block-sorting file co ii libc6-dev [libc-dev] 2.3.5-12 GNU C Library: Development Librari -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#347957: libpam-p11: it works for me...

Followup-For: Bug #347957 Package: libpam-p11 Version: 0.1.2-2 i just did a bit of testing (moved a workstation to pam-p11 today, from pam-opensc), and i can't duplicate this error. Are you sure that your card hasn't been blocked by too many failed PIN attempts? i've locked myself out of a cryptoFlex eGate smartcard before by deliberately giving it the wrong password many times in a row (usually while testing PAM behavior in various clients). When a card gets locked like this, i see exactly the message the Rene reports: sec.c:204:sc_pin_cmd: returning with: Authentication method blocked if you had set a PUK (PIN Unblocking Key) on that auth-id, you should be able to remove the Authentication Block with pkcs15-tool --unblock-pin -a 1 (replace '1' with whichever auth-id you were using). Otherwise, from what i can tell, you'll probably need to reset the card. - From what i've read, multiple failures (10+?) of the PUK may permanently disable the card, though, so be careful. Bug#350663: wacom-kernel-source: Incompatible with 2.6.14
Hi, On Mon, Jan 30, 2006 at 08:54:05PM -0600, John Goerzen wrote: This package doesn't work with 2.6.14 (the compiled module won't load complaining of conflicting checksums on symbols). Hmm, actually I'm surprised it even compiles. There were missing symbols trying to build with 2.4.13... It should probably be upgraded to 0.7.2. It's not that simple. The problem(s) I'm aware of, mostly relate to the device rebinding code, used by this package (and the cpad one), which is not from the upstream distribution -- but which is required to distribute it as a standalone module. We've talked about pushing it upstream, but as you can see, after a couple of years things are back in flux again. To use the current pristine upstream source, you'll probably need to (patch and) rebuild your kernel core instead of just adding an extra module. Supporting this better is a work in progress on lk afaik, things certainly seem to be changing -- and there are newer versions of the wacom driver integrated with the Linus kernel too. I'm not sure if they are now sufficient by themselves for many people. Upstream still requires some ugly patches to unrelated kernel parts to avoid the device being bound by the wrong drivers... At this stage, someone either needs to do some legwork and throw me a bone about what sort of changes we should make to do things the '2.6.14' way -- or you'll need to be patient until things settle down again and I can find the time to do just that. There are other options if this is really urgent for somebody. Anyone with time to help, or some other case to push this up my todo list, is welcome to get in touch. best, Ron -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#350667: audiopause scriptlet
Package: hibernate Version: 1.12-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch It can be useful to pause audio players before hibernation for several reasons: * Machine might resume in a different, audio-sensative environemt (ie, airplane) * Some players like quodlibet (at least when using alsa) release the audio device when paused, which allows it to be unloaded if it's a problimatic device. This is a lot nicer than letting hibernate kill the audio player. * Avoid ugly audio artifacts if music is playing during suspend/resume. I've written a scriptlet to accomplish this. It's designed to be extended to work with any audio players that might be running, although currently it only implements pausing quodlibet. It's enabled as follows: ### audiopause AudioPause yes I've attached the scriptlet and I would be happy to see it added to the hibernate package. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) hibernate depends on no packages. Bug#350670: xpid detection depends on hardcoded, incomplete list of wms
Package: hibernate Version: 1.12-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch The xpid code in the hibernate script looks for one of a long list of window managers to figure out what user is running X. This failed for me, since my window manager, ion3, is not included in the list (neither are ion2 or ion, or probably several others). I think that the last program in the list, X, matched, but of course the X process itself is running as root so it gets the wrong user and things don't work. I think there are probably better ways to do this when xdm is used. For example, here I have: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~last :0 | grep 'still logged in' joey :0Mon Jan 30 22:21 still logged in I've attached a patch to use that. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) hibernate depends on no packages. Bug#350652: install-report
(sorry for my english): I've changed my old motherbord with this one. My old Debian installation work good with a 2.6.12 kernel, but is impossible for me to compile a new kernel (system doesn't boot) or do a new install with netinst cd becouse the debian-installer doesn't detect the hard drivers Please provide us with the output of: (lspci ; lspci -n) | sort you can run this in 2nd console when running the installer. Please paste the part relevant to your HD controller. If you know which kernel module supports this controller, please mention it to us...booting a Knoppix Live CD could help for knowing this (assumign your HD is supported in Knoppix). Also confirm that your HD is not detected *in the installer* and not later, when the installed system is rebooted.
