after upgrading my system to oneiric, the X11 desktop is ugly and almost
unusable, because the fonts and characters are stretched horizontally
and blurred.
I guess that the reason is a wrong/odd dpi value, because xdpyinfo says

the indicator-weather applet.
In my ~/.config/autostart directory there is a symbolic link named
indicator-weather.desktop
which is broken (because the applet was removed).
Deleting this file will most likely avoid
the same bug on a fresh 12.10 installation... i would be happy if
someone can fixx it.

I think I found a solution for this nasty bug. In /etc/samba/smb.conf
acivate the name resolve order line and change it to:
name resolve order = wins bcast
The host component of the search tries browsing the internet and makes

majority of cases, a user will want to mount a volume because they want
to interact with the contents of it. I don't think it's unreasonably to
ask the user to click on the volume icon on the Launcher to mount and
open it

And presumably without the external monitor attached, we read the values
the BIOS is using for the panel instead - and that with the external
attached, the BIOS is skipping the eDP.
