Unfortunately it looks like the correction has had a very short
lifespan. I logged in normally this morning and after perhaps 10
minutes of normal functionality, the screen went blank and all disk
activity stopped.
I have since then tried numerous methods to get the system back up but
after using the comment #12 the sound issue was fixed but I still heard some
scratch when the laptop was startind or if the sound level was too high and I
had to set upd lower.
I did some tests with others distros and I had the same issue with the Mint
Distro (Version 15, Ubuntu based version)
Perhaps try to get debug output out of at-spi2-registryd. There might be
better ways, but I would replace it with a script. Something like

Hi,
After upgrading my Dell XPS13 laptop to Saucy, I am unable to hear any
useful sound out of the headphone jack. When I plug my headphones into
the jack I can see the Built-in Audio for the Speakers briefly flick
over to Headphones and then either flick back to Speakers
Have you rebooted since upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10?
I'm not able to reproduce this bug.

I have not tried it but I expect those three patches should apply to
1.12.4 or later as not much has changed since then.
