I'm ok with a patch implementing this. One thing, that might be
relevant is the question whether windows or win32 is the better name.

Next release

2018-03-06 Thread William L. Thomson Jr.
I am not asking to be impatient. I need to update my Gentoo packages to
the beta release. I held off as it some 300+. Its not a big deal I have
a script that does it, but does take a few hours to run. I just did not
want to do it if another release was coming soon. I skipped the
beta_rc2. There were not really substantial changes, and rc3 followed
shortly there after.

Not seeking an exact date. Just would not like to update them and have
to again next week etc. I think at some point time between releases
will slow. Which that maybe the case now. Thus my inquiry, thanks!

The trigger used to be ALT+A. It was changed to ALT+P because of
conflict with the Refactor pulldown menu. See

discussion.

I'm confused by that bug - why would Alt-A trigger replace all? The

Profile menu.

... not sure why it's Alt-P mind you?

Historically maybe, but that would appear to not be an issue, because as I

This no longer appears to be a valid issue (if it ever was) - there are
lots of context-sensitive mnemonics all over the place. Or do they not
work reliably cross-platform?

So, surely a PR to change the message for Replace All to move the ampersand
back in front of the A would be all that's needed?

Of course, if Jaroslav let me get
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-427 in, you could write a
plugin to customize them! ;-)

Best wishes,

Re: Apache NetBeans events

2018-03-06 Thread Apache Brand Team
Hi,

A couple of questions.

1. Who is organising this event? Is it the PPMC or is it Greenwich Bright?

2. There needs to be an "Apache NetBeans" on the EventBright page
somewhere. Exactly where depends on the answer to the first question.

3. Have you read http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/events.html and can
you confirm that the event is compliant with that policy?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes, I confirm the event complies with the Apache policy -- and indeed the

At
the JBake based solution page, there is a [3] link
 to github repo owned

https://github.com/wadechandler/netbeans-static-site
However, When I click
on “See this page in github.

displayed on any page of live https://netbeans.apache.org/
it lands on this [4] repo
 by apache. [4]
https://github.com/apache/incubator-netbeans-website
I assume the [4] repo
 under Apache is the
one currently in use as I can see more new commits there. I tried baking
and running the source at the [4] repo
 using the guide at
[2] the page on a JBake based solution

Commands mentioned there works fine but root folder structure is different
as the difference of repo names and the [4] repo
 contains different
folders for different domains named “bits.netbeans.org
” and “netbeans.apache.org
” so the path is different where to execute the
commands for bake and run. Please confirm the repo and provide any advice
here, then we can update the wiki [2] the page on a JBake based solution

accordingly. *

Yes, you’re right and that info needs to be updated. Bear in mind we only
published the new site yesterday, so some info on the Wiki is going to be

great if you could update those outdated instructions with the correct info.

Re: Platform API: Context-sensitive keyboard accelerators

2018-03-06 Thread Jaroslav Tulach
Out of curiosity (as I may still be living in the past), here is one of the
documents I have written when attempting to (re)design the NetBeans action
system:

https://openide.netbeans.org/proposals/actions/index.html

In general my intention was to use [Action.callback](
http://bits.netbeans.org/8.2/javadoc/org-openide-awt/org/openide/awt/Actions.html#callback-java.lang.String-javax.swing.Action-boolean-java.lang.String-java.lang.String-boolean-)
actions to register a generic placeholder with a shortcut that can then do
whatever each component wants.

It's been a long time since I worked on the code involved, so my
recollection may be a little fuzzy, but this may help point you in a
 direction or two:

There is a general problem that NetBeans supports, or at least used to
support, both single window pseudo-SDI mode and a multiple windows mode.
And keyboard shortcuts propagate down to the InputMap/KeyMap of the

>>> window
>>>
in question. My recollection is that this was originally handled with
 an
AWTEventListener, because that was the one way to guarantee shortcuts
worked globally, no matter the windowing layout. I *think* we migrated
that to something using InputMap/KeyMap around 2003 or so, but there may
still be workarounds to ensure things work globally.

What I'd suggest to try is an experiment - create a dialog with the

>>> dialogs
>>>
API and try binding a key you know is bound as a global shortcut. Use
InputMap/KeyMap and attach it to, most likely, the root pane of the

>>> dialog.
>>>
If it works, then it's just a matter of implementing shortcuts in the

>>>
places (make sure to call consume() on the event to stop it propagating
further). If it doesn't, then some more fundamental work that's likely

>>> to

touch how key bindings work globally may be needed.

Also bear in mind that key bindings are different for different

on Mac OS, the alt key is a compose key for international characters and
cannot have shortcuts bound to it (ctrl is used instead), and some
keybindings are mapped to different keys for consistency with other Mac

apps (there's a syntax for defining keybindings in OS-neutral ways, for
 declarative bindings).

I'm confused by that bug - why would Alt-A trigger replace all? The
underline is on the p. And for me Alt-P works - it doesn't open the
Profile menu.

... not sure why it's Alt-P mind you?

New netbeans.apache.org is live

2018-03-06 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

Take a look:

https://netbeans.apache.org/

Many thanks to a lot of work over many months by several people --
especially Chris, Wade, Antonio, and Neil.

The site looks awesome, multiple people now understand how it works, a lot
more needs to be done, but we now have a minimal site up and running, with
everything we need to move forward.

A next question/discussion is the relationship between the new site and
netbeans.org -- IMHO everything should redirect from netbeans.org to
netbeans.apache org and then netbeans.org should point to
netbeans.apache.org so that there's no difference between them and
everything runs on the Apache infrastructure.

Thanks,

Gj

I think the starting point is to document the criteria for being an
Apache NetBeans Day, have the PPMC approve those criteria. And then
accept that one, by vote or lazy approval.

> ...Will that mean we will also need to do a VOTE thread for the IPMC?..

It's probably good, that can also IMO be just a lazy vote on
general@incubator.a.o pointing to the above vote result.

Re: Apache NetBeans events

2018-03-06 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
The other aspect is, now that we have approval for these events from
@trademark, Bertrand has suggested that we have a LAZY VOTE (i.e., if no
one objects within 72 hours, it's a go) for each individual separate event
here on @dev, with PPMC members having a binding vote. That would ratify
each individual event and would mean it has the official backing of the
Apache NetBeans community -- and some random person out there can then not
set up some random NetBeans events, i.e., official backing of individual
events by the community is a win for everyone.

Also, though, we need to agree what a NetBeans event actually consists of,
i.e., that's why I added the three items below, defining the minimum
requirements of an Apache NetBeans Day:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/NetBeans+Events

Do we need to vote on that as well? Are there additions to this
list/definition?

Mentors,

Should we wait for the response from @trademark?

Should we start a LAZY VOTE thread here on @dev for Apache NetBeans Day UK?

Will that mean we will also need to do a VOTE thread for the IPMC?

Are there other events that the IPMC has voted on?
