Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2010-04-13 Thread avbryt

This is great!!

I have just managed to get a direct connection between my laptop and
squeezebox, without having to run it through squeeze centre server
software.
I am now using DSBridge streaming through squeezenetwork
When you add the stream to your favourites in squeezenetwork /
mysqueezebox.com you need to add #slim:noscan=1 to the end of the URL.
So for me, I have 192.168.1.101:8124/#slim:noscan=1
The DSBridge software only seems to support one stream at a time.
Squeezenetwork tries to connect to validate the stream before playing,
which is tricky with internal IPs. It also creates a couple of streams,
which seems to break dsbridge. Using noscan avoids this, and seems to
fix it!

This works great and and now I wonder if it is possible to get spotify
on a Ipod Touch and put DSBridge there as well and use it as a remote
at home?
I guess it does!

[slim] Searching in forum with some words no longer works

2010-04-13 Thread erland

It seems like after the server upgrade a few weeks ago it's no longer
possible to search for some words in the forum, the result is that it's
sometimes very hard to find the information you want so you will have to
start a new thread and ask again. I suspect it has to do with words that
are commonly used but I'm not completely sure.

Is there any way to solve this so it works as it did before ?

Some, samples of words that just return a blank page:
- windows
- squeezebox
- squeezecenter
- sb3

stop these segfaults.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm going to forget it and listen to

Re: [slim] Two libraries: Lossless and Lossy. Possible?

2010-04-13 Thread Soulkeeper

I'm in a similar situation. I have a big old MP3 collection, and a new,
smaller FLAC collection. In the living room, where I have a decent
stereo, I don't want MP3s, but on the Controller and Squeezeslave, I
wouldn't notice much difference.

I could live with combining the two into one library, as long as I
could clearly see which albums were FLAC and which albums were MP3.

[slim] iTunes 9.1 bit rate conversion for iPods

Thought this might be useful for some here:

There is a feature in iTunes 9.1 that allows a high quality bit rate

(fixed at 128kbps AAC) when copying to your iPod. This feature was
previously only available for the iPod shuffle but is now available for

MrRalph,i tend to use the SHOUTCAST network on MYSQUEEZEBOX.COM to find
radio stations streaming at higher bitrates such as 192kb etc
you'll be able to find plenty of stations to suit your musical tastes
by using this method.
try it and see what you can do!.

Re: [slim] Internet Radio on the SB3: can I filter on sound quality?

2010-04-13 Thread toby10

I second ShoutCast. :)

Use ShoutCast settings to easily seek out many of the higher bitrate
streams:

SBS My Apps ShoutCast Settings
- Station Sort Order *highest bitrate*
- Bitrate Filtering *192k*

You can also set the above ShoutCast settings on MySB Remote Control
 ShoutCast Settings

Now any Search or Genre you choose within ShoutCast will only result in
streams 192k or higher (or say 128k if you chose 128k as your limit)
This will also filter out most of the many duplicate streams (same
stream offered in four different bitrates)

But there are draw backs to this Bitrate Filtering:
- greatly reduces results (number of stations) for Searches Genres
- many Searches and Genres will have zero results
- AAC files will not show up as few (if any) are at such high
bitrates
ex: a 64k AAC stream is basically equal in audio quality to a 128k MP3
or WMA stream

[slim] Radio v. Boom????

2010-04-13 Thread nolesrule

Happy SB3 user here looking to expand.

I want to put a SB player with speakers in my home office. Since I want
something with a speaker, it's down to the Boom or the Radio.

I have no need for the alarm for this use. It's going to sit only a few
feet away from me. I'll be listening to all sorts of music including
classical.

So I guess my question is, which one should I get?

Is the second speaker of the Boom worth paying about $70 more?

I appreciate your thoughts, and hope for some quick answers as the
online prices seem to fluctuate daily and I'm ready to pull the trigger
based on current price points.

I have both, and can say without hesitation that I think the better
sound from the Boom is worth at least $70. I also prefer the Boom's VFD
screen to the Radio's LCD. I find the Radio's LCD too small -- that size
works for the SB Controller, but for a table top device I'd prefer
something larger.

Re: [slim] Last.fm to retire on-demand music

2010-04-13 Thread Siduhe

Since the Squeezebox implementation only supports the Last.fm Radio
service (which is unaffected by the new changes) and has never
supported the on-demand streaming service - I'd be surprised if
anything changes in the short term for Squeezebox users.

There are some interesting comments in the Last.fm blog basically
saying that the new vision is for Last.fm to act like a portal and to
connect users to any of the relevant streaming options in their country
for every track - that may suggest the Radio service will be
discontinued in the future (or at least it's no longer at the core of
what Last.fm wants to do).

Re: [slim] outdoor speaker recommendations?

2010-04-13 Thread aubuti

Thanks for the replies. I decided to start on the lower end of the
budget and went with the Polk Atrium 45. Installed them over the
weekend and listened to them for a few hours and I'm quite pleased.
Obviously this isn't a critical listening situation, what with the
ambient semi-urban noise of cars, lawn mowers, helicopters, etc. But
great for background music or casual listening at volumes that won't
bother the neighbors.

If anyone else is thinking along these lines, I should say that the
AudioSource AMP100 may be a little underpowered for the Atrium 45
speakers. I know that outdoor speakers tend to sound soft because
you're not containing the sound within a room, but even on my tests of
the system indoors I had to crank the amp's volume more than I expected
to get a decent volume level (especially compared to using the same
model amp with 2 pairs of Polk RC60i speakers in my kitchen). It's good
enough for the volume levels I've needed so far, but it wouldn't stand
up to an outdoor dance party. I'll try a different amp at some point to
compare.

Of course, my Transporter feeding my main stereo sounds much better than

Since we're talking room size. It's an 8x10 home office. The SB unit
will be within arm's reach on my computer desk, off to one side.

I don't have speakers on the computer to prevent annoying my wife with
various sounds from video/audio editing to games. When I need the
sound, I use some gaming headphones. I've been using Squeezeplay on the
computer (incidentally, it's also my SBS since my old Linux box died of
hardware failure a few months ago).

I just don't want to wear headphones anymore just to have the music
going. I'd much rather have a dedicated device.

So, that's pretty much all the details and how I plan to use the thing.

[slim] Do not upgrade to 7.5

2010-04-13 Thread GoCubs72

Since I didn't see a thread about 7.5 challenges, I wanted to make sure
that those with a Boom that use Pandora/Slacker with mysqueezebox DO
NOT upgrade to 7.5 unless you are feeling lucky or hear otherwise. I
have a Duet, 2 Radios and a Boom and all of them have been affected as
follows:

I called Support since I thought it was a one off issue with me, but
after seeing the above it's obvious many people are affected.
Unfortunately, Support had not heard of these issues, but it looks like
it's consistent and I don't want anyone to waste a weekend as I did
trying to resolve.

2010-04-13 Thread goharbourview123

Had a quick look at the file you submitted with the bug and notice that
it contains both ID3v2.4 -and- APEv2 tags. APE tags on MP3 files have
caused problems in the past to the SBS scanner. It might be worth
trying to remove these (MP3Tag or Foobar2000 are free programs that
easily allow you to remove just the APE tags while keeping the ID3
tags).

Of course, if you have other MP3 files with both kinds of tag that are
not causing issues, then I'm talking through my hat, and you can just
ignore this!

It sounds to me like you will be close enough to the device to perceive
the separation of the stereo channels, so the Boom would be a good
choice. Also, with it being a larger room, it will fill the room with
sound better.

I don't own a Radio, but I've read that is doesn't have the punch of
the Boom.

FWIW, the Boom is also rock solid stable since it is based on the
tried-n-true SB3 (aka Classic) technology.

Hi fphredd,

Thx for the notice. It was supposed to be in english. Don't know why it
has changed to dutch. It is now in english again.

I can't stand it that you have not succeeded in getting the ReadyNAS to
accept remote connections so if you don't mind trying some things
again?
I found the following link about enabling remote access for MySQL:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-do-i-enable-remote-access-to-mysql-database-server.html

The ACC help states that you only have to comment out the Bind-address
line by placing a # in front of it. It seems you also have to do this
for the line 'skip-networking'. Can you check this in the my.tt file as
described in the ACC remote server option pages?

Since the ReadyNAS seems to have a non default SBS MySQL installation
also look for the file /etc/my.cnf as indicated on the link above.

If you have modified the MySQL config file, restart the readynas en use
the Test button from ACC to check if remote access is possible.
If it doesn't work let me know and I'll see if we can try something
else.

Frank

Another alternative is a switch rather than a router. Think of it as
a six-plug tab (like power) except for ethernet connections.

If you have dsl/cable, your modem is probably giving out ip addresses
so you could plug the modem, PC, and SB3 into the switch.

Borderline FUD. That's an ancient article (2007) about a few specific
chipsets from before 802.11n was even finalized. It demonstrates
limitations of the specific, poor router and/or client chipsets -- not
necessarily the 802.11n spec. That's my reading of it, anyways.

Also, the 50-80% penalty is only when WEP is used. Using WPA2, even
with those old routers it is considerably faster, but again this boils
down to bad implementations.

Re: [slim] Announce: VortexBox 1.3 released

2010-04-13 Thread pski

VortexBox 1.3 released today. This release includes lots of new features
and bug fixes. We have the latest version of SqueezeBox Server and all
the latest versions of the 3rd party projects that make up VortexBox.
We have also added Subsonic a new GUI that allows you to manage your
music collection and stream it to iPods and Android players. New
 features include

 * Logitech SqueezeBox Server 7.5.0 pre installed and configured
 * Subsonic music interface for remote playing
 * Edit your tags and cover art using the Subsonic web GUI
 * Latest version of TwonkeyMedia Server
 * Many bug fixes including USB backup manager
 * File sharing fix for OSX 10.6.3
 * Auto re-index after rip for Sonos players

To upgrade your existing system you can use the updater in the
 VortexBox GUI.

I updated 3 VM's and while it took a while (and a few responses for
each) everything is archie.

I did this by updating:

Signon to the console and issue:

yum update

Each install took about 3 Y responses but they all work.

Anybody using the webUI VB update?

P

I would be much faster for you to use the GUI update. No need to press
Y :)

Re: [slim] transcoding on whs

2010-04-13 Thread chinaski

I have moved the lame.exe file to C:\Program
Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread but I'm still
getting the lame not installed message when I look at player-audio

I have restarted squeeze but no effect.

Re: [slim] Radio v. Boom????

2010-04-13 Thread Slackerini

I was in a similar position and ended up getting the Radio. The Boom is
great (friend has one), but I opted for the portability of the Radio.
Now that I have a battery installed (finally), I take it out in the
back yard or into my kids room.

It's Squeezebox today, not SqueezeCenter.
