Re: [slim] HTTP 1.0 403 Access Forbidden when playiing mms Internet Radio
I think that what is happening is that the initial stream URL eventually results in a HTTP Object moved to redirect to a time-limited URL, which then requires use of MMS over TCP port 1755 (not HTTP port 80). Squeezebox/SqueezeCenter (and mplayer) probably trying to connect on port 80 - which, in the case at this particular station, results in 403 error because port 80 access is blocked on their streaming server. Asking the broadcaster to open up port 80 streaming might make the problem go away. -- Paul Webster Paul Webster http://www.lastfm.com/user/BondJamesBond Paul Webster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=105 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52995 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Syncronisation Woes
Having had a squeezebox for several years, I realise I would use it more/better if I could synchronise my music better. To explain: I have loads of flac files on my windows server which runs the squeezebox in my living room. I did a one time convert to mp3 to populate my itunes library on my mac to sync to my ipod and phone (not iphone). But there is no synchronisation between the 2. New albums ripped to flac (via EAC) don't appear in itunes, unless I do it manually. Any playcount data from my ipod doesn't reflect into my squeezebox. Playlists created on the squeezebox aren't available in itunes or ipod. Ratings of songs in itunes aren't available in squeezebox. Consequently I don't use any of the playlist/ratings functionality. So I dig around, I could convert FLAC to ALAC and point my laptop itunes library (it's too big to store on the laptop) to the server, but then when I sync to my ipod it would copy the lossless files to my ipod which is only 2GB, so that's not good. I could use the many scripts available to convert FLAC to mp3 automatically, but itunes doesn't watch folders so I would still have to manually import the mp3 files. I'd have up-to-date music in my library but it wouldn't transfer the playcounts and playlists. I'm lost with this, is there a way round it? Ideally I want a FLAC or ALAC itunes library on my windows box, a MP3 itunes library on my macbook and for them to share the metadata. I then want my squeezebox to work via the itunes library on my windows server. Want, want, want eh? The Boom is a very neat solution and sounds pretty amazing. I doubt very much if an SB3 and Creative speakers would sound half as good. The Boom makes a great alarm clock/radio/bedside hifi. I have a couple of Controllers (SBC) and could use one of these with the Boom but as it's right by my bedside and I'm mostly in bed when I use it find a standard remote the best option (much quicker and more reliable than a Controller). If at all possible I'd try a Boom before you buy as I'm almost dead certain you'd chose it over any other option once you've tried it. The Boom also serves to provide adequate sound to the whole of the upstairs of my four bed house (when turned up full). Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues
Well you're asking for feedback, and a transaction with support convinced me my Duet hardware is okay. Here is my latest trip to the funny farm with my Duet. I switched from bridged to hybrid mode on my duet to see if using infrastructure wifi would improve controller receiver interaction. I also wanted to see if I'd do something of a Nokia 770 thats sitting there doing nothing (nice SC skin, but nothing beats the ability of my tablet to freeze and reboot at random :) The controller/receiver was wirelessly connected to a Linksys WRT54G acting as access point DHCP server. The server was wired to the WRT54G. Worked ok. I used 192.168.1.0/24, my server has a fixed address of 192.168.1.50 on the regular LAN. This DHCP server was set for 1-day long leases. Its address was 192.168.1.100 or somesuch. This was an isolated, temporary test network. After a couple of hours I decided to reconnect the Duet and SC server to my regular wired gigabit net: 192.168.1.0/24, router at 192.168.1.1. No problem with the (static net config) server, no problem on the net where there are at least 5 different dhcp clients at all time. I powered off the receiver and the controller, and on again. I pressed the fan button on the receiver to turn it red, and pair the controller again, bridge mode. At first it seemed to work well, the Controller discovered the receiver. (By the way, I believe you should fix the documentation, the menu path I use to do that is not the one described in my UG.) When the question to use a wired or wireless network to contact SqueezeCenter came, I answered wired, waited a bit and received a failure message. The ethernet plug showed the orange link-up led, and a scarcely blinking rx/tx green-yellow led. There was no lease for the receiver in the dhcp server, and no log of DHCP transaction. Normally the receiver is served a fixed address based on its MAC. There started a seemingly endless loop of rebooting, reset to factory condition on the receiver first, and then on both the controller and receiver. I tried various cables, and even hooked it directly to the router/dhcp server, disconnecting all the rest of my network, removed the fixed address lease in the DHCP server, to no avail. Having discarded the influence of cable types and switches along the path, knowing the DHCP server was working perfectly well, I gave up and left the receiver unplugged for an hour. Tried again, starting with a factory restore, nothing. I was ready to declare the ethernet card in the receiver dead. Then something magic happened. I decided to sacrifice the uptime of my router and see if a reboot would help. It looks like it did, because my next factory restore/reconnect attempt finally yielded a DHCP request on the receiver side. The Duet connected and worked. Not sleeping the server overnight, this morning the Duet still works. I am flabbergasted. The router was in excellent operating condition. Before being disconnected and connected to the test net, the receiver had been connected to this network for 2 weeks I think. I noticed 1 or 2 freezes of the receiver during that time, happened at night when the SC server is asleep, so I can't tell what happened exactly. Anyway, power cycling the receiver was enough for it to reconnect to the network at these times. There is something fishy going on here, and IMO that's on the Duet end, not on the router side. FYI, the router is a pcengines 3-port WRAP board running m0n0wall v1.2 (a BSD variant). It is stable in the extreme and I seldom modify its configuration. Next to the router, on the LAN port, there is a gibabit Dell Powerconnect 2716 switch. The switch port to which the Duet is connected is set to: maximum capability, autoneg, no backpressure, no flow-control. MTU size is standard and there are no VLANs defined on the LAN. I did not powercycle the switch amidst my desperate attempts to revive the receiver. Cabling is CAT6. On the path to the receiver there is a small Netgear 5 port gig switch GS-605v2. I didn't powercycle it either so switches are probably out of the picture. (Mind also I tried direct connection to the router which only has fast ethernet ports, with a short CAT5e cable.) On a second port (call it DMZ), the router serves a separate network (192.168.2.0/24) which is currently only used by wifi clients. During my various attempts I tried connecting to that network (although there is no SC server there) and promptly received a lease. Wifi is provided by a Netgear WG-602v3 AP hooked directly to a port of the router. The last router port is connected direct to a DSL modem. On both LAN and DMZ ports, the integrated dhcpd server default 9-hour minimum leases, and leases to clients requesting a longer duration are capped at 24-hours. I don't know whether dhcpd works in split configuration, or has 2 separate instances running. There are outgoing firewall rules on the LAN port, but I specifically left the SC server and the Duet, both controller and receiver, total
[slim] No Artwork Scan
I posted on this problem a few months back and have made some progress but I still can't get my Squeezebox Duet to reliably scan artwork. The problem is that, more times than not, the scanning process will completely miss the Artwork scan. You can see this on the Status tab during scanning. When this happens, there's no thumbnail type art on the Albums listing. I still get art in the Now Playing display but I guess this is retrieving this from the file itself (all my art is embedded in the mp3 files) When, ocassionaly, it does the Artwork scan everything is fine. Is there a way to get it to do this reliably? I've tried changing settings before a scan, doing a full cache removal, etc but nothing seems to make it happen for sure. -- rustysamy rustysamy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19116 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53006 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] I bought a used Duet off eBay
I would. You might be able to configure it without a reset, but I'm sure it will be much easier with the reset. To do a factory reset on the controller, first turn the controller off. Re: [slim] I bought a used Duet off eBay
One potential pitfall...depending on the firmware rev on the controller now, it may or may not be able to deal with password protection on your SqueezeCenter. If you have trouble getting the controller to connect to your server, you can try temporarily disabling the password. It will then connect to the server and update the FW to a current version. Then you should be able to connect to the server. I'm not sure how you enter the server password at that point - you may just have to do another factory reset on the controller. With current FW, the setup wizard on the controller will ask for the username and password of SqueezeCenter. I recently had to do a factory reset on my controller to help debug a bug I reported and it asked for the username and password. I was happy to see that the configuration usability had improved. You may have no trouble at all with the setup, but brace yourself for potential issues. Have fun with your new toy when it arrives! -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 1 duet, 1 receiver. [slim] Setup Questions for SB3
Hi, I have setup a new SB3, and am now having some issues. Here's the setup: - Linksys wireless router is setup via DHCP - SB3 is setup via LAN connection to router (not wifi) - SqueezeCenter is loaded on a Dell laptop. This may be connected via WiFi or via LAN - iTunes is loaded on the laptop, but configured to point to a Western Digital 0.5 TB NAS (a very basic model); I've given up on the notion of having a NAS run solo for the money I'm willing to spend. - NAS is mapped on the laptop as a network drive Here's the problem: - In general, it works fine. I can rip CD's to the NAS, see the files in a directory, and play them back from either iTunes (on the laptop) or on the SqueezeBox (via the SB3 or SqueezeCenter) - Using the wifi connection, once in a while the wireless router develops brain lock and drops out. When this happens, iTunes appears to update the ITL and XML files on the local harddrive, and not on the NAS drive - How can I restore the itunes library files on the network drive such that SB3 will rescan? Re: [slim] Squeezebox distributors UK
I'm glad that there's a thread on this. Thanks to Paul for his information. Squeezebox is certainly available online in plenty of online places in the UK, including Dabs, Amazon, Ripcaster etc. However I'm sorry to report that a year on from this discussion the high street situation is no better - if anything it's got worse. Indulge me a short moment while I tell you my story. I checked my employer's rewards/incentive scheme yesterday and found to my pleasant surprise that I had about £500 of redeemable awards on my balance. My mind went straight to squeezebox! However the awards are redeemable against high-street stores only, such as Currys.Digital, Argos, John Lewis, Debenhams etc. They come in the post as pieces of paper that I have to present at a counter in an actual shop. Clearly this was no good for Amazon, Ebuyer etc - and that aspect is clearly not SlimDevices's fault, it's my employer's fault for having such a backward-minded awards system. No mention of squeezeboxes on the websites of Currys, Argos, Debenhams, Richer Sounds. However there was still hope - I could get vouchers for John Lewis and PC World. So I headed for Oxford Street. The nice man at John Lewis remembered what a squeezebox was, but said he hadn't seen one since about last Christmas, and that there was no indication of any pending re-orders in the system. The most helpful thing he could find to say was 'never say never'. The rather less nice man in PC world had not heard of a Squeezebox, seemed unwilling to assist me in sourcing one, and suggested I try the web-site where presumably I wouldn't be taking up his valuable time. Squeezebox classic does appear on pcworld.co.uk (not that I could have bought it from there anyway), but is out of stock across the whole country, with no indication of re-stocking on the site. I did see Squeezebox products on the shelves in Anvika on Tottenham Court Road and finally met a squeezebox classic in person. (It's a bit bigger than I imagined it.) However I can't get vouchers for Anvika since they're such a small, niche retailer. I went home with empty shopping bags, having absolutely scoured England's premier high-street retailing centre. I have been looking out for one of these products for about a year now. I've still never clapped eyes on a Transporter, or a Duet not sealed in its box. Clearly I had a rather specific set of purchasing circumstances, but I can't understand the virtual invisibility of these products in the shops where people in the UK buy these sorts of products. I can't believe it wasn't even in PC-World near Warren Street tube, which is a huge store. Not one major national retailer carries a single one of these products on its shelves in the UK. These are all retailers which stock many Logitech Mice, Keyboards, Speakers, Pure-Fi's, Web-cams, iPod docks and so on. During my afternoon I saw a number of Sonos systems set up ready for demonstrations - including one in PC-World. What gives here? Why is Squeezebox so utterly hidden from UK buyers? Please excuse my rant, it may sound negative, but I'm trying to give realistic feedback on the frustration of trying to purchase one of these devices. regards, SC -- SomeChap SomeChap's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38296 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox distributors UK
ultra238a;226362 Wrote: Hi, Paul here from Progressive Consumer Electronics Ltd, we are the UK distributor for Squeezebox and Transporter products from Logitech. We have been the exclusive UK distributor for these and previous products since the age of the SliMP3 (so quite a while) We have a number of online resellers in the UK who have been selling the products for many years including: amazon.co.uk dabs.com scan.co.uk ripcaster.co.uk multitaskcomputing.co.uk advancedmp3players.co.uk broadbandstuff.co.uk mediahome.co.uk and many others Ebuyer does list the product when they have stock but the buyer for the category seems to change quite frequently so they lack focus on the Squeezebox (they do sell a lot of products!). We aim to rectify this shortly. You will also notice the PC World.co.uk are now selling the Squeezebox and now have stock in the majority of the stores across the UK. Initially some key John Lewis stores took the Squeezebox but I now believe the product will be available in all John Lewis stores either now or in the not so distance future. We are also working with Anvika who are putting Squeezebox in their three Tottenham Court Road stores as well as their concessions in Harrods and Selfidges in London. Anvika have twelve stores across the UK including other concessions within Selfridges stores which we hope to be getting Squeezebox in to over the next few months. As we now get our supply of Squeezebox and Transporter stock directly from Logitech in Europe, our aim is to go out and get these products in to high-street hi-fi retailers as we now have an even better story to tell to them. We are also joing forces with the Brigantia buying group to push the Squeezebox in to their 1000+ high street members. With amazon.co.uk, dabs.com and scan.co.uk listing Squeezebox (and Ebuyer again shortly) I think you will agree that along with PC World that we have most of the major ecommerce companies working with us in the UK. Feel free to pm me or post here if you have any further questions. I have had my Transporter for about 9 months now and I am very pleased with it. I had a SqueezeBox previously for about 3 years. Just wondering about Audio-T (http://www.audio-t.co.uk/?section=newspage=NEW_Sonos_WiFi). I see that our local Audio T stock Sonos. Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?
I got delayed in work so didn't really get to look into this. Thank for the pointer maggior, though I don't really follow - I don't see any options on the MiP headless web page at http://localhost:10002 to specify cache location. A 'Reload Cache' button did appear at one stage so I clicked that. Is the spicefly web page supposed to be much different from the original - I only notice it being different in that it has a blue background? After running the MiP GUI for it to validate my collection for the first time, I found the location of the default.m3lib file. So I then set the mmm.ini file to that location (as in the mmm.ini snippet below) - so does that mean both MiP GUI and MiP headless server should both now be updating the same cache (i.e. m3lib file)? But I think I may have found my problem - I had not ticked the 'Read Song Data' in the MusicIP settings page in SC 7.2. I have ticked it now and have started a Clear Rescan in SC so will leave that overnight and look at how it got on tomorrow. So I am hoping my skin appeals to those like me who prefer to keep it lightweight, fast, and functional. Well, as you might guess I would argue about functional vs. iPeng on some aspects, especially on the NowPlaying and Playlist screens which I, sorry, find pretty cluttered on your skin. I will never understand why you need all these buttons (actually that was what originally drove to start modifying it). Also, at least for my fingers a lot of buttons on your skin feel a bit small (yes, some on iPeng, too, the Alphabet bar...). But I REALLY like the speed, especially as it shows how fast the browser can scroll when there's less graphics to render (compare your artwork browse screen to the text screens, and I'm not talking load times!) You are also using JavaScript sparingly, don't you? That also helps a lot WRT performance. If I was only into working on the skin my next step would be to set my penguin on a diet, but for now I'll try going native first, seems to help a LOT on performance (obviously). And I like the add next on the browse screens very much. One thing: I think it would help (at least me) a lot if you scrolled the URL-Bar out of the way, you can do so with a simple Code: onload=window.scrollTo (0, 1) I keep it continuously out of the way by modifying globalOnload: Code: function globalOnload() { ... window.onscroll = hideBrowserBar; ... } function hideBrowserBar() { if (!window.pageYOffset) window.scrollTo (0, 1); } This doesn't hurt on other browsers since it just scrolls the view off screen by 1 pixel. -- pippin --- see iPeng at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52513 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I can rip CD's to the NAS, see the files in a directory, and play them back from either iTunes (on the laptop) or on the SqueezeBox (via the SB3 or SqueezeCenter) - Using the wifi connection, once in a while the wireless router develops brain lock and drops out.
