[slim] 7.3 using 100% CPU on Win XP

2008-12-14 Thread slingshot

Downloaded 7.3 yesterday and twice now I've found squeeze centre
thrashing and using 100% of the CPU.

I've had a try with the controller player, other than that I've simply
being playing music from my local PC.

I'll try and work out what causes it but if it keeps doing it I'll have
to go back to 7.2, put some info below and an extract from the log
file.

[slim] Never finish scanning my library with 7.3?

2008-12-14 Thread Tejay

Yesterday I installed the Perl Source code 7.3 on my NAS.
It scanned my files, and I never looked into this.
But a couple of hours ago I did a rescan (I added new numbers to my
collection).

Now it is still busy...

It says:
SqueezeCenter has finished scanning your music collection.
Total time: 10:40:38.

And is still counting.
Yes I know it stopped scanning. But my server will never sleep again?!

Re: [slim] Problems Streaming radio stations

Softsqueeze does not natively support WMA whereas the hardware player
can play WMA natively.

What OS is your SC on ?

If your SC is on Windows, WMA decode for Softsqueeze is included. If
your SC is on Linux or OSX then you will have install a 3rd party app
to decode WMA for Softsqueeze.

What makes you think that's it's still scanning? Do you have a lot of

Re: [slim] Problems Streaming radio stations

2008-12-14 Thread nvosni

I have it installed on both Windows XP and Leopard.

Searching on other posts I have installed AlienBBC on both.

My main pc would Windows XP when I buy Squeezebox so I don't really
mind if it does not play on my Mac.

But still on my PC it does not play. What other software I need to
install on XP in order to play?

Also I read somewhere that Squeezebox has the codecs to play Windows
Media streams. Is that true?

Thank you

Re: [slim] blank display on SB after 7.3 Update

2008-12-14 Thread Mnyb

Looks similar to my experience here:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56198

In short a clear install might help if the uppgrade won't do it.
some old setting or old plugin might be causing trouble .

You can try to remove all 3:rd party plugins and erase you cache folder
first before reinstalling everything. If you erase cache you have to be
patient as your dB is gone so SC have to rescan, web UI can be a little
wierd while this is going on.

[slim] blank display on SB after 7.3 Update

2008-12-14 Thread Phiddel

Hi,
after updating my SC from 7.2 to 7.3 my 2 SB updated the firmware as
aspected (Boom - 40; SB2 - 120).
But then both display a blank/black diplay :-(
I can control them via webfontend and they both play music from library
and radio.
The SC (on W2K Server) works good.

Perhaps the firmware update fails; ho can i repeat the firmware
update?

Is there anybody with the same problem or someone with any idea???

Thanks
Phiddel

As I said earlier the hardware player can play WMA natively.

The station you requested do not show up on my Radiotime on SC and when
looking at the web site I don't think they are WMA stations - one looks
like Flash.

Post the proper URL not Radiotime URL for the stations so they can be
tested ?
What do you use on your PC to play these streams ?
Do they have a video component ?

garym is right about the way.
If you are talking about the Play Shuffled menu item, you can just
tap the first track of an album and it will play the whole thing.
But again, as garym notes, currently iPeng only shuts of shuffle
through the NowPlaying overlay.
There can also be a delay in the reaction to tapping the shuffle icon
since it waits for the server response to change.

On SC 7.3 - the concept of locating stations by geography seems to have

[slim] Mixed-up tagging

2008-12-14 Thread kkeyte

Having installed SqueezeCenter recently (first 7.2 and now 7.3), I've
just done a complete scan of my MP3 music - about 6,500 tracks. It's
all organised well and all has ID3v2.3 tags.

What I've noticed is that in some cases (only a few), SqueezeCenter
thinks there are several albums under one artist, when there is in fact
only one. Take Abba, for example. I have a single album (Gold - Greatest
Hits), but in SqueezeCenter, it shows 6 albums, all with the same name,
same artist name, same album art, etc. The tracks within the album are
split across the six albums. Looking at the tags for the tracks, they
all look entirely proper and consistent - no differences at all.

Looking at one of the virtual albums (the last in the list), I see four
tracks. I've no idea why THESE tracks for this album specifically. Even
the tracks aren't listed in the right order.

Has anyone seen this and does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix
it? It's a bit annoying because it means that I can't actually play the
album properly.

Thanks,

Karl

Anything from 7.2.0 on is tested.
The next version (1.1, doe probably early next year) will probably work

I can't judge on new versions, you never know what Logi changes, e.g.
there was a big makeover of the Radio functions very late in the 7.3

Great support!

Hmm many of the messages is similar to what I got ?

What i concluded was that I could fallback to an earlier version
without problems even a late 7.3 beta ( 24159 )

But only way to get me to official 7.3 status was an clear reinstall eg
remove all traces of SC and do it again.

But then again i'm no expert and many here had no problems upgrading.

My server is an CC4.2 linux install and it is common on this forum, but
not so mainstream.

[slim] New usb hard drives.

2008-12-14 Thread davidcotton

Hi

Well looks like both usb drives I've got are about to go on me. One's
just about had it and I don't trust the other. I do have the flac
collection backed up but sadly not the mp3 version for the ipod.

So I'm after recommendations on drives. At this point I'm not sure
whether to go with a 1tb drive x2 or 2 x 500 (1 for flac, 1 for mp3,
once I've reconverted will back that up as well!). I'm also using a
mac mini if that makes any difference. BTW it was toshiba drives that
just failed on me so don't want to go with them again.

Oh also in the uk. Seen a couple of good deals for a)1 tb western
digital around £80 delivered, or b)Buffalo 500 gig for £49.00
delivered.

Nice though this streaming stuff is I sometimes wish I'd just put the
money to a REALLY nice cdp and have done with it.

Cheers.

Hi,

15min for boot is too long.
Did you ever try a NetReset (thats how we call this in GY). The last PC
I had did also use this 15min, and after the NetReset it works normal!

So to do the NetReset:
1. Shut down Your System
2. If availible, switch off the switch behind the PC where
the Power Supply is
3. Disconnect the Power Cable
4. With the Powercable beeing disconnected press the
Powerswitch on the front panel. and hold it down for 20
seconds.

After that, connect your Powercable again and with a little luck, your
PC will start as usual.

I had this problem, and here's how I fixed it. Add an album to your
playlist and start playing a song. On the album cover now playing
screen tap toward the top of album art to display the time remaining
bar. On this bar, on one side is the shuffle symbol and the other
side is the replay symbol. Tap these symbols to turn off these

Re: [slim] Problems Streaming radio stations

2008-12-14 Thread toby10

On SC 7.3 - the concept of locating stations by geography seems to have
disappeared (i.e. no Greece only Greek) and with that category a lot of
 stations.

I'm on Version: 7.3 - 23805

I presume you are on the latest SC7.3 version and it may have changed
the RadioTime menu structure from my SC7 version, dunno. I aint
updating any time soon. My last two SC updates caused complete WinXP
system crashes during install process.

Searching within RadioTime via SC7 is a PITA. In fact, the Search
RadioTime feature doesn't even give a space to enter search criteria
(I'm assuming that's what is supposed to happen).

For simplicity and much faster searching I just go to the RadioTime web
site, do a quick search, then add the selected station(s) to My
Presets. Then I go to SC7 RadioTime My Presets and test each
stream.:)

[slim] squeezebox 3 and Squeezenetwork

2008-12-14 Thread Jim Adams
hi,
i have a Squeezebox 3 and it works fine from Squeezecenter. If I change the
music source to Squeezenetwork then go to squeezenetwork.com and try to play
an internet radio station I get the message Now playing but I don't hear
anything. My squeezebox is registered and the PIN is set, I have an account,
etc and it appears like things are working.

if I disconnect from squeezenetwork and return to Squeezecenter everything
works fine.

do I have to use the remote to hear internet radio when connected to
squeezenetwork or can I do everything from the squeezenetwork website? I'm
trying to get internet radio to play while my computer is off but would like
to set the music source from the squeezenetwork website then shut my
computer down so I won't have to use the remote.

thanks for any assistance.

Hang on a minute. My reading of what you've said here suggests to me
that you're proposing that the server should apply ReplayGain to the
audio samples prior to sending it to the players. If I've
misunderstaood what you're saying, my apologies. If however that is
what you're saying, then this is absolutely, unequivocally the wrong
way to do it. The audio samples *must* be sent to each player
unmolested, for a variety of reasons:

1. Some players might have ReplayGain enabled, others not. Some may
want to use track gain, others album gain. You can't apply the
ReplayGain at the server end once for all clients.
2. The ReplayGain adjustment (which is done in the digital domain)
should be applied after the signal has been widened to 24 bits within
the player (in order to preserve resolution). If it's done in the
server, you'd have to widen it to 24 bits, which might involve
on-the-fly decoding to WAV, widening and either re-encoding back to
FLAC or acceptance of increased network bandwidth requirements.
3. Some of us run SqueezeCenter on low-power servers, which may not
have the CPU available to perform all this stuff at the server.

BTW, if you're running a browser in WinXP, it's worth giving
'DropMyRights' (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms972827.aspx)
a look.
The ability to run with lower effective permissions, for me at least,
was a major reason to switch my windows box from 2K - even with the
annoying validation stuff MS started doing with XP.
I was pretty excited when I saw this in the (then new) XP API - and
expected MS to make use of it by incorporating the functionality into
some version of their browser (and maybe some other vulnerable areas,
like Outlook). They have yet to do so - but the API's now easy to use,
thanks to a MS employee who felt the same way I did, but who had more
motivation (or maybe time) than me.
Oh - it's open source, which likely matters to at least some folks
here.

I'm -assuming- all Firefox users know about NoScript(?)

[slim] Compilation albums again

2008-12-14 Thread Daren

I have retagged my compilation albums with a comp=1 tag (SqueezeCenter
indicates Compilation: Yes). However, no matter what Music Library
setting I use, I cannot stop SC from listing appearances on a
compilation album under a particular artist.

This is the library structure: Home Artists Oasis Cigarettes And
Alcohol - 40 Modern Anthems.

I do not want compilations showing here as there is already an entry
here (as I am grouping compilations together):

Home Artists

I do a full clear and rescan but nothing changes. TPE2 is populated by
Various Artists.

What am I doing wrong?

BTW, changing settings in SC 7.3 launches iTunes

[slim] How to switch receiver from Wireless to Wired?

2008-12-14 Thread brianz

Just hooked up my new Duet - works great, love it. However, I just
realized that my ripped tracks from being sent from my desktop to the
Receiver via wireless, despite having the ethernet cable hooked up to
the router. Is there any way to switch the Receiver's connection to
wired? I saw in the online manual how to do this on setup, but I can't
figure out how to fix it now that it's already been set up as wireless
unintentionally.

Thanks for any help.

[slim] No Sound from Duet and Boom

2008-12-14 Thread jimzak

Suddenly while listening to music this morning, the sound went out on
both my Boom and Duet which were synchronized with the 7.3 upgrade
since yesterday.

I have rebooted the server computer and Squeezecenter appears to be
working normally (Vista SP1 with Windows firewall)

The display on both the Boom and the Duet remote both indicate that
music should be playing (time ticking off the track, volume control
adjusts, CD art displayed, etc.) but there is NO SOUND from either.

I rebooted the router too (Linksys WRT54GL running the Tomato
firmware).

I even de-synchronized the players. No happiness there either.

I will be music-LESS until someone gives me an idea of what to do.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Brute force would be to factory reset the receiver (hold botton till it
blinks fast red) and the controller (factory reset in advanced
settings) and start from scratch.

There may be a less painful route - but there are lots of complaints
about needed to reset the controller to reconfigure the receiver in the

That's cool. Just need a way to have it update automatically. I was
looking through the UI.js file (as this is where info is polled to
update the nowplaying.html) at how this could be done and it appears
there would have to be an update to the song parser. The song parser
appears to be a function within the Base.js so it may be possible to
add some code there to support this. I'll have to experiment, but am
limited in my knowledge here.

Re: [slim] Should I create a Partition?

2008-12-14 Thread thurstongarden

Thanks for the input chaps and chapesses. Unsure of how to do multiple
quotes, I will add my replies:

1. I might well be able to put in a second drive, but it's a works
laptop so I don't really want to.

2. No, I won't be stopping at 65Gb. That's me just re-ripped all my
CD's having previously had them as mp3. The library will of course get
bigger, but it won't be quick. I am tempted to look at getting a fit-pc
next year and having it as a dedicated music server/storage. That way I
can get all my FLAC off my works laptop. I can also go wired rather
than wireless as at the moment.

3. I agree that there's something bad about my system. It's a very
small firm with a retained IT bod but he's not much good. I prefer to
keep my own machine clean, but I also fiddle... Time for a full
reinstall!

4. MSCONFIG - yes I am familiar and have hoovered it out as best as I
dare. I attach a screenshot of those that I have not had the courage to
uncheck and would be grateful for any more I can get rid of.

5. I do have a 500Gb external drive for back ups and will be backing up
all my music, photos and docs before the reinstall.

6. I have ZoneAlarm running (this actually seems to take quite a while
to lad though), use AVG CCleaner and Spyware Doctor regularly and its
apparently all clean. Any ideas on a light firewall? Or should I revert
to Micro$not's own?

I never considered that the FLAC files were dragging the startup time
down - but tried a defrag last week and I gave up after 14 hours and
23%! This is what brought me to the idea of creating a partition. Looks
like it's a winner when I do the back up and reinstall.

Cheers again for the help - looking forward to more!

1. I don't think I have a static IP address? However, every time I

this mean it's static?

Hi,

Just a quick update. The Blank screen on the SB3 (not SB2 as i said
before in error) is sorted during a downgrade to 7.2.1. Tried a couple
of upgrades and new installs to 7.3 but each time the SB3 remains blank.
Now sitting on 7.2.1 without AlienBBC :-(

Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping

2008-12-14 Thread jeffmeh

Perhaps I am confused here, but I would think that a server-side fix
could be implemented as follows:

If the file has no replaygain tags, do nothing.

Else, if the file has replaygain tags, calculate from the track peak
and track replaygain whether the adjustment will make the track clip.
If it will, replace the replaygain with the maximum possible value that
will not cause clipping. Perform the same function for the album
replaygain.

Send the file along and let the player apply album, track, or no
replaygain based upon its settings.

I believe that this will not be particularly resource-intensive on the
server, because it really only has to perform the calculation when the
replaygain value is positive.

Are there other ways to apply positive gain in the digital domain other
than through a replaygain adjustment? Unless we are applying positive
digital gain we cannot cause digital clipping (bit overflow), correct?
Digital clipping may have occurred earlier in the recording chain, and
we may have flat peaks, but that damage is done, and whatever
information we have left by definition fits within the 16 bits we have
(or 24, or 48, or whatever the file contains). Am I missing something
here?

 7. Power Button - tried that although firstime, it being a laptop, of
course it fired up lol. Battery out on the second attempt but to no
avail. It did remind me of my Apple days (10 years ago) when you could
'zap the P-ram' this power thing sounds quite similar. Didny work
 though sadly.

Looks as if you have a lot of non-essential stuuf in your start up.
Also it appears as if you have two instances of SC starting up.. Can't
really tell because I can't see the paths.

In task manager, how many processes do you have running. On a laptop
if it's much over 40-45 you may want to eliminate some of the. Only
you know what needs to be running and better yet what needs to be in
startup. My music server has 32 processes running including SC and
Squeeze tray. In my start up folder I have SqueezeTray only. MSCONFIG
shows 8 startup programs. You can't get much cleaner than that with
Windows, but you can get much closer.

Clear your caches and temp files (Internet and others). Run a defrag
and clean up your statup files. Make certain you have 1 firewall only.
Mulitple firewalls are an invitation for disaster. Get rid of all but
one virus, maleware, etc. program that is running. Most of the time
after taking these steps things improve drastically especially start up
times. You may also want to run a good maleware scan. My favorite is
Malewarebytes. It's free and does a great job. Better than TrendMicro
and others.

Good luck

Look in your start up folder and the All Users start up folder and get
rid of anything in there that you don't need at start up. A good
example of stuff that doesn't need to start is Adobe products,
Photoshop products, printers tools from folks like HP, even Quicktime
in most cases doesn't need to be in start up. Double check your
virus/maleware stuff and especially the firewalls. I don;t know what
the Rain things are, but I bet they really aren't necessary amd may be
eating up CPU cyles.

I think you'll like malewarebytes (google can find it) You don't have
to do the paid one, just the free downlaod scan. As a amtter of fact,
the paid one sticks another process on your PC which has been known to
interfer with some software, notably Nikon photo software.

Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping

2008-12-14 Thread marsboer

I don't really se the problem unless it's a problem today already.

Everything should still work as before, the only thing is that the
replay gain processing engine should see gain tags adjusted to be
non-clipping instead of the real gain tags.

How is this done today is the real question!

If the file is sendt to the receiver before replay gain processing is
applyed this is a good thing. The only different thing should then be
that the Squeezecenter server is adjusting the gain tags before it is
sent to the receiver, so that the receiver sees the non-clipping gain
tags not caring if it's adjusted or not and applyes the replaygain
logic as usual.

As I can see, this is a server operation to do, and everything will
still function as they always have if my logic is correct, even though
the receiver is doing the real work.

If however the operation is already done at the server today, i still
don't see the problem as no one has complained yet, the only difference
will still be that the replay gain is adjusted before processing.

If they however change the whole process and location of the process as
it is today it seems a bit strange and unnecessary.

Yes, quite so. The server can do a trivial calculation to limit
positive RG value so as to prevent clipping, and then send that
adjusted RG value to the player instead of blindly sending the original
RG value. There is no argument about this.

What I think Moonbase was proposing was that the server should actually
apply the RG value and alter the audio samples before they are sent to
the player - that's what I was objecting to (in the strongest possible
terms).

However, as I said in an earlier post
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=369178postcount=15), the
presence of attenuation via the player's digital volume control adds
additional subtleties. If we want to take that into account and end up
with a gold standard solution, then as far as I can make out it can
only be solved in the player's firmware.

I'm fairly relaxed on this issue. I certainly wouldn't want to insist
that the gold standard be implemented if it were to seriously delay
getting the basic problem fixed. I'd be happy with a simple server side
fix that just reins back a positive RG value on the assumption that the
player will be at 100% volume.

Re: [slim] 2009- Important Year for Slim Devices Founders

2008-12-14 Thread JSanchez

Just a quick comparison of another open source audio company that was
taken over and subsequently pretty much destroyed along with the rest
of the community that supported the orginal product. That company was
Phatnoise, the company that bought them; Harman International.

I have one of their Phatbox units in my car, and I love the unit.
Unfortunately, time and lack of further development has caused the
system to start showing its age. A couple of guys have done some
further interesting things, but none of the original developer have
been heard from since...at least to my knowledge.

I think the SD and Logitech merger (at least to this point) has been an
example of the right way to merge a company with broader
marketing/exposure with a niche device. I have one of the first
Squeezeplayer Classics (silver face/no signatures!). And I love it. The
partnership with Infrant lead to my purchase of an original NV. It's a
great integrated system. The fact that Logitech didn't materially
change the product (and has allowed development to continue with a
competitor, Netgear) has prompted me to buy units for my dad, brother,
and of course a controller for myself!

Holding the left arrow for five second with a configured SB3 takes me to
the setup menu - believe me after so many factory resets and hours of
searching the option I'm quite familiar with the setup menu ;), but my
problem is that I can't access the wired/wireless option in this setup
menu - it just does not appear anywhere.
The only thing I see is Ethernet appears disconnected - Please check
your network connection and pressing the UP or DOWN arrow as described
in the manual just does nothing.
The order of the setup is on my SB3 is also a different than described
in the manual. In the manual you first choose between wired or wireless
and than your region, my SB3 first wants the region and then setting up
the network and there is no option to choose between wired or wireless
:/
Guess I have to buy another switch tomorrow, seems to be a little
bitchy SB3 I bought.

I know a lot of people rave about Kaspersky, but when I tried it, I got

Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping

2008-12-14 Thread CatBus

Not to throw a monkeywrench into this whole discussion, but couldn't
SqueezeCenter quickly scan its entire database for the maximum amount
it will need to scale back positive ReplayGain values, and then apply
the same adjustment to *ALL* tracks?

Upside: all tracks/albums would again have the same volume, and you
wouldn't have to worry about one album seeming quieter than the rest
because of clipping-avoidance.

Downside: everything could get very quiet, perhaps so quiet that some
small powered speakers wouldn't be able to compensate and achieve the
same volume.

Sounds like a desirable user option to me, though.

Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping

2008-12-14 Thread marsboer

CatBus:
You have misunderstood the whole concept of replaygain.
Adjusting all tracks with the same gain will result inn the exact same
volume differences between tracks as you would get with no replaygain.

Replaygain is not the same as real playback volume. It's a value that
says how much the volume should be adjusted on each track to give the
impression of the same volume between tracks relative to a given
reference RMS level (89db)

In other words, replay gain is only relative to each tracks own RMS
volume and therefore it must be different from track to track with
different overall volume to have any function.

Oops I guess I wasn't clear.

Let's say you have three albums. One with -2 album gain, one with -4
album gain, and one with +2 album gain. The +2 album gain needs to be
trimmed back to +1 to avoid clipping.

Why can't we also trim back the other albums to -3 and -5 respectively?

i.e. we're changing the reference level to below 89dB...

[slim] SB1 Not updating firmware

2008-12-14 Thread egizzi

Hi- I just bought a used wired SB1 at a garage sale, looks great,
basically unused. I'm running squeezecenter 7.3.

It connects fine (sees the server, gets the right addresses, etc.).
Then the problem begins:

1) It asks for firmware update
2) I hold down brightness for a few seconds
3) It jumpts to the Now Playing screen and is frozen. It never enters
the screen where the firmware updates
4) Then I unplug it and start over. Same thing.

Ideas?

Thanks

Re: [slim] SB1 Not updating firmware

2008-12-14 Thread JJZolx

Kinda surprising, as the SB1 firmware hasn't been updated in years.
Must be a really old Squeezebox that either hasn't been used recently,
or was running with a very old version of Slim Server.

Can't imagine too many people who are still alive have seen an SB1 take
a firmware update from any recent versions of SqueezeCenter, so this may
be the first time it's even been attempted.

You might try installing an old version of the server, something like
Slim Server 5.4 maybe, just to do the firmware update. If it works,
then move to the latest and greatest. I seem to recall someone posting
a link to a page with archived versions, but can't find it right now.

Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping

2008-12-14 Thread jeffmeh

Yes, quite so. The server can do a trivial calculation to limit positive
RG value so as to prevent clipping, and then send that adjusted RG value
to the player instead of blindly sending the original RG value. There is
 no argument about this.

I absolutely concur with your objection.

I'm not really clear on the problem with the attenuation via the
player's digital volume control. I would expect this to be additional
attenuation, after replaygain is applied. Is that not how it works
today?
