I'm curious to try MediaMonkey, but before I go to the bother of
installing it, could you explain how MM gets the tracks from my
computer to my stereo systems? I've browsed the MM web page, and so far
to me it looks to be more like iTunes, Winamp, Foobar2000, etc. That is,
designed to play back on the computer itself, or possibly output to an
audio system via soundcard, USB, or maybe digital output. But maybe I'm
 overlooking something. Thanks.

.. primarily for play lists. When I want to hear an album, then I
usually use the SB system natively, as it were. Have used Winamp,
Foobar and MediaMonkey - have to say that MM with MonkeySqueeze does it
for me - the ONLY issue, to date, is the synching - when that is fixed,
and it appears that it will happen, then it will be just about perfect.
Great music library management, plus great playlist management. Have, in
fact, almost never had a problem with the SB scanning system, although
it is slow, but then I have learnt to be extremely anal about tagging -
primarily use ID3-TagIT for quick fixes, and MP3Tag to make sure
everything is tickety-boo and to add artwork to each track, if I can be
bothereed!

Was quite delighted when I discovered MM and MS - solved one of my all
time problems - creating large playlists quickly and easily, using my
whole collection (just under 20,000 tracks) AND playing them. I tend to
export the playlists so that they are available natively to SB, plus
just play them thru MM if synching isnt an issue. Not perfect, I know,
but then nothing really is and it works for me!

Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released

2011-11-16 Thread vagskal

Thanks guys for trying to help out!

MrC: I can already see the SB players and SBS library under Playing Now
in MC. I have done almost all steps listed but will start over in the
order you suggested. As for AV software I have NOD32 on the MC PC and
MS Security Essentials on the SBS PC and those do not monitor local
network traffic as far as I know.

What do you mean by check the TCP port in MC? I have not changed the
default value.

Andrew: My library contains +120k files. I think our discussion on this
was in your thread for the previous version. I could not get it to load
fully in MC.

Thanks for explaining! It is definitely A I am after. I will have to
accept the standard info shown on the players and the loss of cover art
(and I guess the ability to see in iPeng additional info available in
SBS about flies in the current playlist).

I have more metadata about the files in MC than in SBS and I want to
use all metadata in MC when selecting files for playback on the SBs.

Yes you need a MySB.com account to use most services. Your SBS server
 will connect too MySB.com.
Your player itself need not ever connect directly to MySB.com.

This isn't true in the UK The Rhapsody/Napster deal is a US thing
and doesn't affect the Napster service in the UK at all.

My understanding is that Napster has considerably more music than
Spotify, but Spotify streams at 320k vs Napster's 160k. Napster is £5
monthly and Spotify is £10.

I use Napster personally and have yet to find anything that has 30
second previews. Am very happy with Napster but haven't tried Spotify.

I started it to disable streaming also in there. As soon as WMP was

Is it safe to use WMP or is there a risk that WMP will alter my files

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-16 Thread socistep

I've reduced the amount of time I spent 'working' on my SB/music system
this year (first born arrived in Jan), 4 main tools I use to reduce the
overhead

1) Reliable server - Invested in a HP proliant microserver which is
rock steady, quick and quiet
2) Vortexbox - Installed on above, have had for a number of years and
reduces the manual ripping/tagging work
3) Erlands plugins - Use ratings/dynamic playlists, 'top rated'
playlists form the bulk of background/casual listening
4) Spotify - Use spotify for other playlists and also for music on the
go, this has reduced the time needed to get music onto iphone/android
phone for in car and on the go music

Before I spent quite a bit of time making sure tags/artwork was
correct, still had a lot to go but that has dropped down the priority
list, I will probably once a month go in and correct new music tags
where I wasn't happy with the vortexbox result (e.g. year or genre
incorrect) - I've probably spent more ad-hoc time rating tracks in my
library however limited time - I prefer now just to chill out and
listen to the music :-)

This is not totally correct. If you have LMS on your PC then you don't
have to have a LMS music database, hence no scanning. An empty folder
is all that is required for the music folder address. MediaMonkey can
manage your music database and it tells Squeezebox what to play. LMS is
still required and anyway it has useful plugins that MediaMonkey
doesn't. LMS on a Linux NAS (e.g. ReadyNAS DUO) does require a managed
music database due to file format issues between the windows OS and
 Linux.

Try MediaMonkey(basic)/MonkeySqueeze for yourself and see the
advantages of playing your music collection on Squeezebox using these
freeware programs. The official release is here:

Also try the MonkeySqueeze Development site for the latest beta which
 has playlist sync:
 http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19t=59907

Thanks.

The problem is that from MediaMonkey forums and your messages, there
are annoying delays (I use mainly flac files ...) with this plugin.
I must say I don't feel like being a beta tester like with LMS.
If I have to install LMS, start it with an empty database, and so on, I
guess it will be much easier to run directly MediaMonkey with a
smartphone application, and replace the Touch by a good USB dac ...
With a small silent and nice Nettop like Asrock ones, it may be the
perfect solution.
I am more inclined to check how easily MediaMonkey can be controlled
with a smartphone, than mixing Squeezeboxes, LMS and MediaMonkey.

At this point It seems to me that good solution are
- LMS get decent files selection and library management, and I can
stick it.
- LMS doesn't and I have to completely get rid of LMS

If I have to get rid LMS
- Squeezeboxes can be used without LMS at all (I can accept TinySBS if
it is improved, there are simple bugzilla bugs to fix for that) and I
keep the Touch without LMS
- If not possible, I replace the Touch by a good USB dac and forget
about Squeezeboxes.

The mere point here is that Logitech is a hardware company, not a
software company.
They make money with squeezeboxes, not with LMS (which is free).
A smart manager should understand that a squeezebox Touch should be
seen as a network soundcard from any PC music software, or as a
standalone device running an optimized TinySBS.

If people want to mess with LMS and its weird scanning, it is there,
they can use it, but it should be only another not mandatory option.

I have to check how MediaMonkey can be controlled with a smartphone

Didn't knew it was possible before I answered your question and checked

There are several ones, apparently some with WIFI.
If one of them really works fine, that would be great, and the small
nettop running MediaMonkey could be hidden.

You probably never use your library the way a lot of people does.
If you want to play some files wherever there are located, without
necesseraly keeping them in your database, and make frequent changes to
your library, MediaMonkey is really years ahead LMS (ease of use, speed,
reliability).

The first time I tried MediaMonkey was several years ago, and at that
time, it was already much more convenient than LMS is today.

There is NO file selection feature in LMS.
You have to declare a directory to LMS, and place this file in this
 directory.
If you just want to play a flac file located on a USB stick, and then
disconnect the stick and forget about this file, LMS behavior is a
 nonsense.

Your obviously quite frustrated that SBS/LMS doesn't meet your
requirement, however I suspect for the majority of users it works well
and does what they want - it does for me complimented by Erlands
plugins.

However I can understand where users get frustrated around playlists,
as mentioned I tend to user ratings based playlists and edit on the fly
if needed as well as Spotify playlists rather then spending a lot of
time myself on creating playlists - I also heavily used the LastFM 'my
library' and 'my recommendations' playlists before they started
charging - I prefer to get others to do the work rather then spending
ages myself creating playlists but every user is different.

The bug was supposed to be fixed, but it was reopened.
My Touch loose several minutes a week with latest software when running
TinySBS.

A workaround is to temporarily connect to mysqueezebox.com to fix the
clock.

I just tried to switch to mysqueezebox.com to do it.
This was so easy with 7.6.1 (clear option in home menu), but I am still
looking how to do it with 7.7.0 after several minutes, and menu
personalisation is far less clear than before ...

Hopefully you can fix the clock if you connect to SBS/LMS running on
your computer.

The guys developping squeezeboxes interface must live somewhere on
another planet ...

Ok, I've attached the new build to

vagskal;670452 Wrote:
MrC: I can already see the SB players and SBS library under Playing Now
in MC, but the Send to command does not work.Ok, this is interesting: it
means that JRMC and Whitebear ARE already
talking together pretty well. I assume the library and players appear
as Something (by Whitebear) -- in which case this confirms three good
things:

1) JRMC is successfully sending UPnP multicast search requests to
Whitbear via UDP on port 1900
2) Whitebear is successfully sending UPnP unicast search responses to
JRMC via whatever port that JRMC nominates in its search request
3) JRMC is successfully downloading Whitebear's device description
document using HTTP GET commands from Whitebear's HTTP server on port
31416

So this basically confirms that your network is functioning quite
well...

Now you say that the only thing that is not working are the Play To
commands. Such commands are made by HTTP POST commands to Whitebear's
HTTP server on port 31416. We already established in 3) above that HTTP
GET commands are working fine between JRMC and Whitebear. The log file
that you sent earlier contains many HTTP GET requests but no HTTP POST
requests, so that evidence supports a hypothesis that HTTP GETs are
getting through, but HTTP POSTs are not. There can only be two
conclusions: either a) JRMC is not sending any HTTP POSTs for whatever
reason (this is unlikely because of the evidence of other users), or b)
something else is blocking HTTP POSTs. So who could be selectively
passing HTTP GETs and blocking HTTP POSTs? Well, it can only be a
firewall, an anti- virus suite, or the Windows TCP/IP stack itself.
Over to you...

These packages DO monitor network traffic.

Verify your LAN's router settings too... You're looking to ensure

You could use Wireshark on both systems to which system is preventing
these requests.

AndrewFG - as for option (C), for us JRMC users with large libraries
and/or lots of customization of views schemes, this option is a
non-starter:

- The library initialization takes too long, whereby as albums are
filling, before the album is complete, tracks appear as discrete tracks
rather than an album. This causes issues with Album views.

- Having to recreate complex views and setup is very cumbersome and
laborious.

- All music playback and usage/management of the main MC library is
impossible. Thus, general music tagging and management cannot occur
during music playback (exactly the time playback is desired!) :-)

have to have a LMS music database, hence no scanning. An empty folder

manage your music database and it tells Squeezebox what to play. LMS is
still required and anyway it has useful plugins that MediaMonkey
doesn't. LMS on a Linux NAS (e.g. ReadyNAS DUO) does require a managed
music database due to file format issues between the windows OS and
 Linux.

Try MediaMonkey(basic)/MonkeySqueeze for yourself and see the
advantages of playing your music collection on Squeezebox using these

Thanks for the additional information. You say MM tells Squeezebox
what to play. Is this true if LMS is on a Linux box? And does it apply
to multiple SBs, and to sync'd or different streams?

To be completely honest, I don't have problems with SBS scanning
(haven't tried LMS yet), and don't have problems with SBS at all except
for a few minor bugs. But I have an open mind and am willing to see what
advantages MM or other approaches offer, especially advantages that
don't involve controlling the music from a laptop or desktop computer
(so the MM smartphone app has potential appeal). Having the computer
hidden away and multi-room capability are two must tick boxes for me.

Did you install official LMS 7.7.0 and updated Touch firmware ?

So by adding the mysb in my home menu, it will keep it active and
therefore keep the time true? Just making sure I'm getting the concept

That's a pretty cool solution Toby. I do plan to check my server's

no. you have to connect the touch to mysb.com now and again to get it
to update the time is what they are saying. Just having the switch to
mysb.com on your home menu doesn't do anything (other than making it
easy to see that menu item so that you can switch).

I haven't paid much attention, but haven't noticed my touch displaying

that makes any difference. Not sure. But I'll need to actually pay more
attention to the time. 5 minutes I wouldn't notice

weaknesses on the side of JRMC and SBS.

Yeah, understood. My intent wasn't to be critical, but rather mention
the issues faced w/option (C). We realize this isn't due to
Whitebear.

In reality, the loss of artwork is a minor concern for any SB connected
to some remote HiFi system - it really can't be seen from any distance
anyway. Meta-data would be nice, but oh well. On a Touch, I find the
display too small. (The Touch is such an odd child).

Again, thanks for your Whitebear contribution and continued support.

Provided your vortexbox has decent timekeeping your players will too.

I disabled AV on both PCs (on the SBS PC where I run MS Security

I had a look in settings for my router (Netgear). UPnP is turned on,

Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released

2011-11-16 Thread MrC

You can start the capture, and enter http in the Filter area and click
Apply. This will filter to show only HTTP activity. Refresh some web
page on the system and you'll see GETs. As AndrewFG mentioned, you're
looking for POST traffic, in these two scenarios (from AndrewFG's post
earlier):

a) JRMC is not sending any HTTP POSTs for whatever reason (this is
unlikely because of the evidence of other users)

So, run wireshark on the JRMC station, looking for POST traffic from
the JRMC system to the Whitebear system (verify the src/dst IPs if you
see POST traffic). If you see POSTs from MC, (a) is not the issue
(this was already mentioned as being unlikely).

b) something else is blocking HTTP POSTs. So who could be selectively
passing HTTP GETs and blocking HTTP POSTs? Well, it can only be a
firewall, an anti- virus suite, or the Windows TCP/IP stack itself.
Over to you...

If I recall your setup, your SB/Whitebear system is on another system.
Run wireshark on this system, looking for POST HTTP traffic. If you see
it, this would indicate some software on this system is blocking the
traffic.

EDIT: Never mind the first question (Is this true if LMS is on a Linux
box?), as I now see the answer is 'yes it can'
 (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89046page=3). Would
still be good to know the answers to the other Qs. Thanks.

I think it's time to list the pros and cons of using
MediaMonkey/MonkeySqueeze with Squeezebox. LMS is still required and
remember MonkeySqueeze is under constant development:

Pros
- MM/MS can tell LMS/Squeezebox what to play
- You can multisync devices as normal using LMS
- MM/MS can communicate with Linux NAS Devices with LMS installed
- Playlist sync is available in the latest MonkeySqueeze Beta release
There is a no lag between tracks anymore.
- LMS does not have to manage a music database
- MM provides quick access to the music library and is not hindered by
a very large database
- Creation and use of Playlists is very easy
- All supported audio formats play

Cons
- MM/MS cannot do multiple streams
- MM/MS cannot play audio in-sync with Squeezebox (at the moment).
Although you can mute MM and use SqueezePlay on the same PC, synced
with the other devices.
- PC and MM/MS must be on for the sync to work. Not a major issue if
running LMS on the PC.
- LMS will need to link to a music database if SB devices are to
individually access music

Using MediaMonkey/MonkeySqueeze with Squeezebox won't appeal to
everyone. I have my PC on all the time and use MediaMonkey to play
music. I have a hardwired connection to my HiFi system and to the
pergola outside. I have a Boom in the Kitchen plus I use Squeeze Player
on my phone connected a portable audio system. When required (quite
often) I have the same music playing throughout the house. I can use
the Boom separately to either play music direct from the LMS database
or access internet radio.

Would I like MediaMonkey to manage the SB system full time, absolutely,
however it cannot do everything that LMS can do. It's also important to
point out that MediaMonkey is now a multimedia player with a DLNA
server in the latest release.

Gotta go, I am happy to answer further questions at anytime. Try MM/MS
with SB, it's not hard to setup and you can always go back to your
present setup at anytime.

The bug was supposed to be fixed, but it was reopened.
My Touch loose several minutes a week with latest software when running

A workaround is to temporarily connect to mysqueezebox.com to fix the
 clock.

An alternative workaround is to setup NTP on the touch :
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87588highlight=ntp

I did that when I was on TinySB 7.5.4. Since upgrading to 7.7.0, I did
not put NTP, because I did not notice enough drift yet (my drift is not
that bad). I'll try to check if my NTP instructions works with TinySB
7.7.0 this week end, as well as how much drift I see.

I looked at the bug 17164, and I was puzzled that the description of
the bugfix seemed to relate to only a small part of the issue, but I
did not dig deeper. In other words, it make sense to me that the bug is
not fixed in 7.7.0.

All I want from my squeezebox SERVER is to to stream my flac and mp3

I hardly ever buy cd's anymore - Spotify and Napster work seamlessly,
and there are plenty of sites to download hi res files.

If a friend should pop by with some flac files on a stick, then
admittedly my choice is limited, but as previously stated, no one is
suggesting that SBS/LMS can't be improved.

However, regarding the things LMS can do that MM cannot - does that
make MM behaviour a nonsense? Of course not - one was designed as a

Finally, when I eventually upgrade to my much longed for Cyrus hifi

Not True, This feature has been around since pre LMS, it's just non
intuitive.

Get the file path to the file / folder / directory of interest

In the Web Interface

Paste this into the Internet Radio - Tune In URL Field

Click on the play (Tune in) or Add Buttons

See your desired files queued up or played using the file reference ,
rather than a stream URL.

Result.

For Bonus Points, work out the request / command sent to LMS generated
by this interaction, then embed it in a shell extension, so you could
play the file directly from the file system (in much the same way as
the foobar2000 Shell / File Explorer Context Menu additions) - Or have
an app you could drag and drop the file onto to play them, or whatever
Operating system dependent mechanism works for you.

The Capability is there - its just how you expose it in a useful
manner.

If a friend should pop by with some flac files on a stick, then
admittedly my choice is limited, but as previously stated, no one is
suggesting that SBS/LMS can't be improved.

However, regarding the things LMS can do that MM cannot - does that
make MM behaviour a nonsense? Of course not - one was designed as a
 player, the other a server.

Finally, when I eventually upgrade to my much longed for Cyrus hifi
system, you would be welcome to come round to my house and plug your
USB stick straight into the back of the amp!

 Trev

LMS is a very effective server with a decent but improvable interface,
where it lacks is playlist management IMO however you can add Erlands
plugins, ipeng/squeezecommander, other programs to create static
playlists or for windows users look into MM/MS on what that offers.

In terms of plugging a USB drive then I guess the only option is to
transfer into your music folder then you can play from there without
having to re-scan

You can do whatever you want with it, but most sensible people would
add music they've purchased to their library (or libraries in the case
of owing more than one property), and that's the model LMS is designed

[slim] Problem(s) getting MOG/Squeezebox to work on Linux

2011-11-16 Thread gmachine_24

I have the latest version of Logitech Media Server loaded onto a
computer that runs Linux (Ubuntu/Mint) and I also have a Squeezebox
Boom.

I have installed the MOG app for Logitech Media Server on several Linux
boxes but cannot get the Logitech Media Server 7.7 software to show the
MOG app under Home My Apps.

The computers are able to find the Squeezebox Boom player fine; it's
just that I cannot get the app to work. I have tried
install/remove/reinstall reset/changed all the options under Configure
/ Player Settings... and still, nothing.

However, I have installed Logitech Media Server to one of my Windows
Vista laptops and it displays the MOG app as it's supposed to and it
works great.

I'd just like to use my Linux/Ubuntu/Mint computers for this. :)

Thanks.

Are you sure you have configured your MySB account correctly for the
Ubuntu server and that the server has a working Internet connection?
Have you tried restarting the server (LMS, that is, not the whole

For me, the App is even shown on pre-7.7 server versions even though it

 it's called these days).

It occurs to me that perhaps I should be looking into some of these
internet streaming services such as Spotify, Napster, etc. Having them
would give us the chance to sample new music before we buy. But this
 brings up some questions:

 1. Do these streaming services require running via mysqueezebox.com, or
can I run them via a local server? I really don't want to sign up with
 msb.com.

 2. Is there a minimum version of SqueezeBox server I would need to
upgrade to in order to run these streaming services?

 3. Any opinions about which is the best streaming service - bearing in
mind that my wife I are in our 50's and like quality rock from the
1970s. Any new stuff we're likely to enjoy is probably not going to be
mainstream chart acts. So I guess what I'm asking is which service has
the best selection of the more obscure artists. (Not weird music per se
 - just the less well-known performers).

Never mind those. If you have a hardware SBS player, the best deal is
Pandora.

1. You must have a SBS version that does Mysqueezebox.com. I cannot
recommend the current edition. Find or search for the last 7.5.x
version of SBS.
2. On your hardware, you will be able to create and listen to Pandora
channels at 128K (where the online PC version is at 64K.) When using
the webUI, there are no ads but recently there are some audio ads.
3. A Pandora channel corresponds to artist(s) you like. Your likes are
played with human matched music that is similar.

Re: [slim] Problem(s) getting MOG/Squeezebox to work on Linux

2011-11-16 Thread paulster

It's working fine for me on Linux. I just configured it via MySB.com
and then installed the plugin on the server. I think I had to remove
and re-add the plugin when I forgot to configure it on MySB.com first
but nothing more complicated than that.

It's a great service but it's costing me a fortune in CDs I keep buying
after listening to them via MOG!

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-16 Thread MeSue

The Capability is there - its just how you expose it in a useful
 manner.

Nice tip! I never knew that. Copied it to my tips file cuz I'll
probably forget how when I need it.

I tested it out on a folder and yep, it works... but it adds the files
to my library. It will be interesting to see if it goes away the next
time my library is scanned. The files themselves not going to disappear
as in the case of a USB drive... this was music I had moved to another
disk area because I just didn't want it in my library anymore.

Could be handy for things like audiobooks where you generally listen
only once.

Re: [slim] Logitech Media Server

2011-11-16 Thread Michael Herger
I see a number of people here are sticking with 7.6.2. The problem is,
I just checked and found that I haven't updated since 7.6.1 r33110 and,
when I try to find 7.6.2, can only find a link to Logitech saying that
it will not be released. Is there any way I can download 7.6.2 and,
if not, would you recommend I upgrade to LMS or stick with 7.6.1?

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-16 Thread Gingernut63

Grahame;670669 Wrote:
Add a Shortcut at the top level of your music directory (Symbolic Link)
to where your USB mounts (e.g. G:\ ) , and name the shortcut , say
 USB_DRIVE

(This approach allowed support of multiple physical drives when SBS
only supported a single top level music directory)

Then you can Browse Music Folder - USB_DRIVE , and away you go ...

Good idea. Here is a suggestion to make sure you can access the same
usb drive all the time. Mount the usb drive to a folder on your
computer and then browse to the folder in LMS. This gets around the
issue of another usb device taking the drive letter and a new one is
assigned to your usb drive.

The following link has acceptable instructions on how to do this:

Re: [slim] Vaguely interested in Spotify/Napster/whatever

2011-11-16 Thread p-cubed

MOG has provided very good sound quality, is half the price of Spotify,
with a comparable or better catalog. The MOG catalog seems to have far
less dross and duplicates than Spotify. It was very easy to set up.

I'm a bit confused now. I didn't think one needed a my squeezebox.com
account when using Triode's plugin for Spotify. Reading this threat
leads to the suggestion that you do.
Can someone take away this confusion?

Hey vagskal, are you REALLY sure that the log you sent me is
representative? If you happened to capture the wrong part of the

HTTP POST requests. And in which case, you (we) are chasing the wrong
problem. Messing around with WireShark is not for the faint hearted. So
perhaps it is worthwhile for you to try once more to do a log on
Whitebear's Http Server before you really dive into WireShark in
 detail...

Edit: Indeed, I am really embarassed to admit that I was just doing
some tests with JRMC and Whitebear using option A) and I did find a bug
in Whitebear that would prevent it from working for you. I am s
sorry about this, because I fear that I have been wasting your time
these last few days. I will send you a PM with a link where you can get
the fixed version. Please test it and let me know if it works. Again I
am really sorry if I have been messing you around

Try out Whitebear. The middleware that joins the two worlds of:
1. UPnP/DLNA media clients and media players, and,
2. Squeezebox Server and Squeeze Players

No, 7.6.1 is working fine for me at the moment. I just thought then
general recommendation was to go with 7.6.2. Or does it offer so
little improvement, it would be better not to bother?
