Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Ubiquiti
I've been running an AP-AC-LR hardwired to my router and an AP-AC-Lite as a wireless downlink to the LR for a few years. Would recommend setting up a Raspberry Pi to run the Unifi controller and hardware it into the router. I'm using an RPi 3b and it's working well. Even using the beta WiFi AI. Haven't taken the time to RTFM, but it looks like some of the functionality that required a security gateway is being added to the controller. YMMV, but having the controller and able to tweak it has helped my overall network performance. Most of my Squeezeboxes have been connected for between 18-20 days, around the time I rebooted after a router firmware upgrade. "You know, I'm all for progress. It's change I object to." Re: [slim] Syncing volume on some players but not others.
Unfortunately, seeing the same results that you are seeing - volume change on *ANY* player will cause all players with "sync volume" set to sync to its volume. In my test it was the Receiver in my bedroom that I left at "don't sync volume" and set the Boom and the Receivers in my living room and office to "sync volume". When I changed volume in the bedroom, all of the other players synced to it at the beginning of the next song. When I changed any of the other players, all of the players *except* the one in the bedroom synced volume. It doesn't appear that when "sync volume" is set on a player that LMS checks to see if the other player that changed volume has "sync volume" or "don't sync volume" set. Not sure how a change request/suggestion is made, however, it might be a useful change to have only players with "sync volume" set to affect other players with "sync volume" set and ignore when players with "don't sync volume" have volume changes. Any chance the Classic is connected to something that you can control the volume via remote or app? That way you could leave it at full volume in LMS and just use LMS to change the volume on the Boom and Duet. Somewhat a trade off between using another remote/app v readjusting the Boom and Duet volume when ever you change volume on the Classic via LMS "You know, I'm all for progress. Re: [slim] Syncing volume on some players but not others.
Just gave this a try - synced 3 Receivers and the Boom, set 2 Receivers and Boom to sync volume, leaving 1 Receiver at dont sync volume. When I change the volume on any player, every player that is set to sync volume does. If I change the volume on any player other than the one set at dont sync, only the ones set to sync actually sync. Im running 7.9.2, but if 7.9.1 works the same, you may need to readjust the volume on the Duet and Boom anytime you change the volume on the Classic, but the Classic wont change when you change the Duet and Boom. [slim] Ridiculously pleased - big thanks to Michael H & SqueezeBox community
Have always had random glitches when streaming from Internet - Spotify, radio stations, etc. Generally once or twice a day. Took some time to update all the firmware on my firewall and APs a couple weekends ago, updated to LMS 7.9.2 and everything has been rock solid. Currently running Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.2 - 1524136933 on RPi3 with MaxPlay hardwired to router. Music and OS on a microSD card. Interesting that after I updated the firmware on my Ubiquiti APs the Auto setting for power is no longer full strength and the WiFi signal strength at most of my SqueezeBoxen is lower by 10-40%, however, syncing 5 or 6 is no problem. Running Spotty and ShairTunes2, both working flawlessly. Re: [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?
I've been lucky, most of my gear is 9 years old, have only had to replace PSU for one duet receiver, fortunately that's working fine. Long term, I would love to go with Chromecast Audio due to size and cost, if the sync issue can be addressed. Not HiFi, but unfortunately, I can't really hear the difference anymore. Otherwise will go to Raspberry PI. Currently running LMS on one and very happy, using Max2Play - arbitrarily started with that and its working fine so stayed with it. Replacing the radios and the boom will be more challenging - their are some Android boomboxes out there, so if/when I run into needing to replace them, would see what's out there before building an RPi replacement. Sony's introduced a line of wireless audio devices - they use existing WiFi networks like Squeezeboxen. It looks like they are building this capability into some of their BluRay players as well as a stand alone iPod dock ($229) that can be connected to existing audio gear. Also a version of the same with speakers ($299) and a couple stand alone network speakers. It doesn't look like they've rolled out any boom boxes with this yet, but it seems like a logical next step. Sony uses DLNA to work with digital music libraries and they have their own music service similar to Napster or Spotify with about 10M songs. They support a few music services - Pandora, NPR, vTunes, Slacker and the Berliner Philharmoniker. The stand alone docks don't appear to have digital outputs, just stereo RCA and I wasn't able to find any specs on music formats supported. I'm very happy with my Squeezeboxen and don't see myself moving away from them anytime in the near future. Rocking out to Spotify thanks to Triode's most excellent plug-in as I type this. Re: [slim] Play different music on multiple sb's with music sub services
Not using Rhapsody, am using the Triode Spotify plugin. I can stream Spotify reliably at 320K to two devices - either sync'd or playing different streams. If I add a third it starts to skip. If I drop to 160K I can get a third sync'd but not a fourth. Planning on experimenting a little more over the weekend. Doesn't seem to matter what type of devices I sync - Receivers, iPeng playback, Boom, or Radio. If I leave it 'overloaded' spotityd.exe will die eventually and I'll need to restart it to access Spotify. Streaming to 3 more devices with a stream from my SBS local library has no impact on the Spotify reliability - I can still keep 3 devices streaming Spotify with another 3 devices streaming local music. Will turn on all the devices this weekend to see if there's any impact, however, I'm suspecting not. Given this, I would expect that the Rhapsody streams wound not impact your Spotify streams. I've scrobbled over 35K tracks since I stood up my first setup back in March 2009. That's not completely reflective of usage, since I'm not scrobbling internet radio - I use the stream URL a fair amount to listen to Live Music Archive as well a couple radio stations. Occasional hiccups - once or twice a year - mostly having to reconnect Duet Receivers that I haven't used for a few months and are in areas of the house with poor WiFi signal strength. Hopefully Logitech will read some of this and take it on board. Ok - you've got your wish. The Squeeze setup is pretty well documented - the hardware can be used with what ever software author wants to support it. It's not a hardware problem, it's a software problem. It's up to the software authors, like Albumplayer, to step up if they want to provide customers the ability to use third party hardware. Or they can wait until Logitech sees a customer demand for that specific application large enough to buy its way into the development plan. Or for an independent author to create the integration - depends on how open the ISV is with their internals/APIs. Logitech can either focus on improving the SBS UX or becoming dependent on the viability, popularity and goodwill of third party ISVs. That's a pretty hard business case to make. From what I've seen the priority is on 1) Good hardware 2) Functional Software 3) Extensibility to other music player/managers (iTunes) and services - Pandora, Last.fm, etc. As time moves forward the plan should be a well balanced approach - new hardware to open new market segments and retain current markets, better software to improve UX and more options with third party software and services. Without an unlimited budget they are faced with the traditional triangle of project management - schedule (time), resources and scope. The new releases of the Radio, Touch, SBS 7.4x and new applications indicate that this is the route Logitech is taking and either unexpected problems with resources or scope are impacting schedule and delaying the Touch. I'd certainly bet that getting the Touch out the door is priority 1 at this point, since hardware is the basic revenue driver. -- JeffHart You know, I'm all for progress. It's change I object to. Re: [slim] Is it possible? PC Albumplayer (a windows media player) direct to Squeezebox
Sorry if I was unclear - you're describing the Rocketfish solution or something like it - no cables, wireless, not FM, etc. This is not an endorsement - saw them at Best Buy one day and remembered them. http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/pc-217-5-rocketfish-wireless-hd-audio-starter-kit.aspx Given this is a Squeezebox forum, most of us here are biased towards the Squeezebox since we've decided it meets our needs. There may be more familiarity with alternative solutions on general audio forms such as Audio Asylum. Please don't take this as discouragement from looking at the Squeezebox solution - I love mine and use it daily, sync'ing songs from my kitchen to the bedroom to my office as I move throughout the day, scrobbling everything to last.fm, using it to listen to NPR Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, when my wife and I have time in the evening playing cribbage instead of when we are running around Saturday morning, etc. With the exception of snyc'ing you can probably do 95-100% of that with Albumplayer - not sure how it handles podcasts or scrobbling if it does. On the otherhand, I have a spare server in my basement. I guess having a 'spare' server basically means I'm enough of a geek to deal with any software and setup issues. Which have been minimal, but have on more than once occasioned the use of fancy language (cursive). All in all, my setups been stable over the last four upgrades, with the exception of having to reset a receiver or the controller a couple of times a year. Anyway - if you can check out the Rocketfish and let us know what works and what doesn't - price, setup, etc. - maybe someone will know of an alternate. -- JeffHart You know, I'm all for progress. Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
I'll agree that the native sync UI could be more intuitive and have installed OtherPlayers, however, now that I'm familiar with the native UI I use it 95% of the time. On the subject of master volume, it hasn't been an issue - when the phone rings I hit pause. I do the home office thing so silence is the best background. I use the controller, iPeng and remote to change the volume on my Boom, but leave all of my Receivers on 100% and use the sound system volume control. One exception is the bedroom setup where I need the audio lower - happy with the sound of the Cambridge radio, but not enough low end granularity. I listen at night - the missus is sensitive to sound but I'm ok with an extremely low volume which requires lowering the gain on the Receiver and the volume on the Cambridge on step up from 0. And at this point the I'm not syncing. Thanks for the tip on changing the default iPeng setup :) Happy with the iPeng but am always adjusting the gain on the Receivers when they are synced with the Boom. -- JeffHart You know, I'm all for progress. Sounds like you are looking for something more along the lines of the Rocketfish wireless audio products - they accept an audio input and broadcast it wirelessly to a receiver; options include a receiver that will provide audio outputs to connect to an existing sound system or wireless speakers. Basically they replace wires with a wireless connection. I'm not sure of the impact on signal quality if any. The Squeezebox approach offers much more control and flexibilty, but if you're happy with your setup and just want to go wireless it may be the easiest approach. -- JeffHart You know, I'm all for progress. upstatemike;518172 Wrote: Is it really? An SB3 is $300 and the Sonos preamp models are $350. Add a decent auto power on amp to the SB3 and you won't be far off the $500 price of the Sonos amplified model. The Sonos Controller at $350 is more than the SBC at $250 but it is also a touch screen unit with proprietary radio linking to the nearest zone player so you get tangible performance uplifts for the cost difference. It's true that Sonos doesn't have anything in their product line to compete with the cheap and frustrating, non staic IP configuring, no GUI setup, SBR, but I'm not sure that this is a market niche that any company should be chasing. When comparing the rest of the Squeezebox line I really don't see where the price delta is all that dramatic. For me the price difference was dramatic and a big factor in my choice. Using list prices for comparison on the assumption that both are available a comparable street price discounts the Sonos solution was $1,135 more than the SqueezeBox setup, including the $9.99 for iPeng. Probably add another $99 to that - for a Zone Bridge. I could potentially wire in one of the BR100's to the router in my office, but would be a pain. My Squeeze set up is below in my sig field, the comparable Sonos set up would be 1 S5 (closest thing to the Boom), a Sonos Bundle 250 (don't need the ZP120, but the bundle is $48 cheaper than buying 2 ZP90's and a controller) and three ZP90's for a total list of $2,445. So yes - my price did include the SBR's which I found to be inexpensive, easy to setup and un-intrusive rather than cheap and frustrating. List price for my setup is $1,310. Already have a server that I was using for media, so that's a wash. Real world numbers, real world economics, not based on the assumption that existing products (SBR) are excluded. If the SBR isn't for you, than the pricing delta would only be $335 less than the Sonos. Why not just point Safari to your.server.com:9000/stream.mp3 and use iPeng to control it? This has the advantage of being able to listen to your music in the background while using other apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Works great over WiFi, a bit problematic over 3G - large lag time and while it's technically running in the background using another app in the foreground that needs data access will interrupt the stream. Finally had a chance to do some testing with iPeng and the Controller, seeing the same results in both - they will enable / disable scrobbling as selected. The UI is not updated to reflect this with either, which leads me to think that the display update is dependent on a server side command which is failing. This doesn't manifest on the web UI's, guessing that they are not dependent on a web command to update since the display is changed on the client side. I haven't delved into the code so this is all speculation, maybe someone familiar with the code could confirm? Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?
The easiest way would be go with either a Duet (Receiver), Classic or Touch connected to the reciever AUX inputs and then control the speakers from the central location. Otherwise you'd need to place Receivers, Booms, Classics, Touch's or Radios every where you want music. The Boom and Radio are self contained, you'd need amps or powered speakers to accompany the others. You might put a switch in the rooms to allow you to switch from the central receiver to the local amp using the existing speakers. If they don't have a server or NAS available, I'd recommend starting with the Touch when it's available and use an external USB drive for the library. If they don't have a centralized remote solution, you might consider the Controller. Then you or they can expand the system. -- JeffHart You know, I'm all for progress. It's change I object to. Re: [slim] Squeezebox can only connect to wireless channel 1

Quick question - what channel is the router/access point set to? That's what determines the channel of the wireless network. From the sentence above it looks like the router is on channel 1, since you were able to connect on channel 1. Change the router to channel 6 and reboot everything. Should be ok and you shouldn't need to make another change on the controller. -- JeffHart SBRx5, 1 Boom, 1 Controller JeffHart's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23791 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67854 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] accesing a friends hardrive?
Alternatively you would need to set up a share to the directory on your friends hard drive and then create a shortcut to that in the top level of your SC music directory. You could then either scan for new music or just navigate there by using the music folder option. Either way it will add to your library database, if the connection is transient it might be annoying, however, a clear and rescan without the share would remove them from the database. pski's recommendation to run SC is much more elegant and lower maintenance in the long run. -- JeffHart SBRx5, 1 Boom, 1 Controller JeffHart's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23791 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67728 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Maximum File Limit? Squeezebox?
While it'll be awhile before I hit 65,000 tracks, have heard that Sonos can't do a random play from more than 10,000 tracks, which I am over. It's some pretty weird segues (think Mozart to Motorhead to Moby) when I put the whole library on random - much fun. Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?
Web content isn't limited to 320x240. Streaming Netflix HD content from the Samsung BD-P4600 to HDTV isn't so bad, even over DSL. Unfortunately it's limited to stereo - surround sound. Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?
I'm using a Samsung BD-P4600 Blu-Ray player that has built in DivX support. It's not quite ready for prime time - it has a habit of forgetting the server information. When I take the time to set it up it streams DVD quality over wireless fine, will need to go wired to stream HD; unfortunately my server and blu-ray player are on different circuits so homeplug doesn't work. The UI is basically a folder browser, pretty low tech and not great for large collections. Hoping that future firmware releases will at least fix the server information retention if not provide a better UI. I do like the approach of supporting streaming from a Blu-Ray player and would hazard a guess that this will be the way the market goes over the next few years, until the market goes streaming entirely and we stop buying and renting discs. [slim] Anyone having problems streaming Live Music Archives?
For the past couple of days I haven't been able to stream from LMA - from the Boom it loads the playlist but doesn't seem to play, looking at the SqueezeCenter Web UI controlling a receiver it loads the playlist and seems to be playing, however, there is no sound. I'm running SC 7.4 - 26714. I *think* I've streamed LMA from this version successfully (been running this since May), however, hadn't tried for awhile until two days ago. Server is a Dell XP system wired to router with SBR's wireless. Just checking to see if it's a service issue or specific to my install. Thanks for any input. Re: [slim] I messed up SoftSqueeze, how do I reset the menu?
I had done the same thing - turns out the answer is in the keyboard short cuts - in this case CTRL-W toggles the remote. Not sure how I turned it on originally, just fat fingered it somehow. Here's a link the rest of the short cuts http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net/faq.html#shortcuts Cheers, Jeff -- JeffHart SBRx5, 1 Boom, 1 Controller JeffHart's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23791 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64067 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can't connect to WRE54G range expander
You might try DD-WRT, I'm using v24-sp1 with a WRT54G (might be GL/GS) and get basic connectivity. The controller does occasionally hang when switching from one player to another. Went to the beta dailies, it seemed to be ok, but now it's hanging again. Not sure if it's related to the DD-WRT - it seems like an acknowledgement isn't being recieved by the controller - or if it's related to wifi roaming issues in general. Quick question on the plug computer - does it support powerline ethernet? It seems to have a standard ethernet jack. Might make it to large, but would seem like a logical capability. Re: [slim] multi-room amplifier suggestions
I'd consider looking at a Boom - nice price and you can control it completely from Squeezecenter. I'm currently running 5 receivers and a boom, two of the receivers are connected to book shelf systems and one to a Cambridge Soundworks CD player. The boom is a less expensive option than any of those combo's with sound that's on par with the receiver connected to a book shelf system. Will give the Cambridge an edge on bass, however, it's a much larger box. Re: [slim] New User
Unless you already have an amp speakers ready to go, you may want to consider looking at the Boom. For the price of a Classic, you end up with a complete system that will most likely sound as well as the Classic plus any stereo setup less than $250-300. If you have any type of stereo setup you should be able to connect the Classic. I went the Receiver route due to price size and have them connected to two component setups, two bookshelf systems and a Cambridge Soundworks CD/Radio. Had to use a different cable for the last set up, fortunately I had an RCA to 3.5 mini plug cable on hand. Either way the Classic and the Boom are great choices and in many cases easier to setup than the Duet combo (controller receiver) Cheers, Jeff -- JeffHart JeffHart's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23791 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62068 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Connect to server via router?
Sure - you just need to create a share of some type. What OS are you running on the server PC? I have a Remote Desktop connection from my Vista laptop to my XP server, but have it set up the other way with the share on the laptop. My server is next to my workspace so I use to rip as well, but control it all from the laptop. If they are both windows based you will need to set up the server to allow file sharing and then map it using Windows Explorer from the PC. Here's a link to Microsoft's explanation for XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 Best regards, Jeff -- JeffHart JeffHart's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23791 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61573 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm kind of new here, might upgrade to a Transporter at some time, currently using the lower end gear. Why not just use the internet radio access in SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork - are there stations that aren't accessible?
