Re: [slim] New Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch spotted !!

2009-09-04 Thread Muele

Before abandoning this thread entirely I will post a small coment to
some of my own predictions.

Muele;434230 Wrote:
Come on all you guys speculating in built-in-server capabilities,
dock+remote etc. This is clearly just a Jazzed-up classic. It has some
nice additions to what the classic can do. But it will not do all the
things you dream of. Browsing usb-music will be by folder-structure as
no scan is being done and most likely you will not be able to share it
with other Squeezeboxen across the network. If the product proves me
wrong: great. But I hardly think so.
My guess is that the classic will stop being produced pretty soon as it
doesn't seem to have any advantages over the SBT (Squeezebox Touch)
except if you prefer the vfd and design of the classic. And perhaps
pricing, but who knows how the prices will compare a couple og months
 after the release.

But speculations like what we see in this thread is excatly why
companies like Logitech go through big ordeals to keep products secret
until properly announced. 1. people will want to return stuff/hold their
buy untill they can get hold of the new shiny stuff. 2. Rumors about
what the product can actually do start cirkulating faster than a frog in
 a blender.

All that being said, I too love to get a sneak preview of stuff that is
about to come. I actually guessed that something was about to come with
the rebranding of the website and new nomenclature of the software
suite. For me a good wall-mount and
 wipe-off-smudgy-fingerprints-and-ability-to-contiune-looking-good-in-a-kitchen-environment
ability is very important for me if I were to buy it any day soon.

 BR Mogens

After all I was wrong for the most part, but I also was right in some
little parts, as the Classic is being discontinued.
And the fact that I was proven wrong in other aspects just makes me
glad.
Especially that it will be able to run TinySC excites me very much. By
the time we finish building a new living room on the second floor, the
Touch and SBS 8.0 will be ready and then i will most definately get one
for it. And even the missus will support the purchase for being able to
remove the musicserver and serve as a basic NAS as well. I don't need
the WebUI and never transcode anyway.

What a laugh the developers and beta tester must have had reading this
thread.

If you read this Matrix, you should choose the Radio, Boom or Touch if
You already own a Squeezebox Duet and want to add more zones.

Wouldn't it be more sensible to omit the word Duet in this sentence,
and then add it to the Duet column as well?

For someone new to Squeezeboxes, it could be inferred that you get a
Radio, Boom or Touch only after you already have a Duet - and as we know
the Duet is certainly not the easiest device to set up (for a lot of
people), and a negative experience of the Duet will put people off from
trying other products.

Perhaps I'm being ultra-picky about this :-/

it a bit quicker in areas.

They might as well discontinue the Duet Controller and offer ipeng
application for different touch devices like iPod, iPhone, Windows CE,
Android etc. They offer far better and cheaper hardware.

Keep the reciever in the program for headless installations where you
want to hide it.

I kind of agree with you as long as the SD card support was good, IE if

though depending on the final size of this thing the installation could

On the other hand this is a specialized product, unlike a notebook
which must be able to work with every bit of windows software the world
can throw at it. The screen is much larger as well which is where a
chunk of the cost comes from, and internally, it would probably would
use much of the stock componets that a laptop uses. Of course, the audio
circuitry is more extensive than a laptop, but they have this developed
anyway.

As for product runs, how much difference are they to the average laptop
anyway. There are so many laptops and netbooks out there now and many
from much smaller companies than Logitech. A classic example is the new
internet tablet from always innovating. Now this is design and could
probably run slimserver at least harware wise, and is going for about
the same price.

People can run slimserver on some pretty low powered PC's, notebooks,
nettops and even NAS units, so I really don't think it would be too hard
to include this in a slim device I think the only reason they don't
is because it would defeat their name ;O) It won't be a slim device
anymore would it ;O)

I personally am tired that I have to keep switching on my PC every time
I listen to music. This was fine when I bought the device, but that is
so retro these days.

Re: [slim] New Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch spotted !!

2009-09-01 Thread Bert0123

I use another solution for the controller. I have a Philips Pronto 9400
touch screen remote control with an application to control the
Squeezebox. It is not a very cheap solution but the application is
embedded in a remotecontrol-only solution, which I think is ideal.
Controlling my home equipment and controlling a Squeezebox. It
communicates directly by WiFi.

The only disadvantage is that the Pronto's Screen is blanks after 30
sec.
And I like the idea of a LCD screen in the SB Touch which is always
on.
You can look at each moment to see what's playing without waking up a
remote control. And that is something I can't with my Pronto. And
probably also not with an iPhone/Pod.

But I think there would be a market for touch screen remote solution if
it responds fast. Just take the touch screen from the SB Touch, put it
in a flat and small case and there is a touch screen controller...

But on the other hand the tablet pc are coming. Who knows what's
possible then . . .

Actually wall mounting appears to be quite do-able -- but you have to
cut a hole in the wall. In other words, mount it in the wall rather than
on the wall. There have been various examples posted of wall-mounted
SB3s, and a similar approach could be used for the SBT.

I'd pay for a dedicated solution, especially if the new touch remote
was responsive. I never tried the iPod touch with ipeng, but I bet its
less responsive than the Duet. However, I have absolutely no use for the

Your signature doesn't list the Squeezebox products you own, but from
your post I take it you don't own a Duet! Don't get me wrong, I would
love to see a Controller mated to a Harmony 1000. I love my 1000 and

thing better for me is all control in one remote (or a Receiver that did
IR, that would get me back to one remote).

And Ben is correct, hard to compete with an iTouch/iPhone with iPeng
price and feature wise especially if one already owns one. And if you
don't, one gets an iPod out of the deal for less money.

2009-08-31 Thread froth

This probably will look nice sitting on a table or counter somewhere,
but it will only be as good as the back end and infrastructure
supporting it.

Hopefully for as much as what is going into the user interface of these
devices, one would hope the same goes into the other pieces.

I believe the new device will have the ability to attract some new
customers, but the bigger bang for the buck for me would be to introduce
something that would allow users to more easily setup and configure
their system. On top of that, it would go along way if a device could
be provided that would allow the customer to implement the system
without having to source their own server for Squeeze Center. Some
little device that runs Squeeze Center and allows you to expand storage
when needed. In other words more turn key. What about a server with
it's own Wifi router and software to allow easy configuring of squeeze
devices with it. Again, aimed at the less technical customer providing
more of a turn key solution. For others, they might go the build it
themselves approach.

Why not offer options like mains / power network adapters branded as
Logitec bundeled as part of the package. Beter yet, could also have
these part of the product just plug in and away you go. The only
issue you have then is the controller but at least that can definatly
minimze potential issues.

Only? How about different international power standards? need for
isolation of data signal from mains?

While powerline Ethernet works great when it works, it doesn't work in
many cases, sometimes even in the same house. In the US, most houses are
wired as two separate 120v systems off of a common 240v pair. Sometimes
signals can flow easily, sometimes not. Seems like a huge potential for
confusion among mass market, non-tech-saavy, consumers

Like I said, I like my Controller and use it every day. But my
Controller doesn't ring when somebody calls my cell phone which is
basically with me at all times. Guess iPeng is more of a convenience in
the end.

From an A/V TH point of gadget view, I really liked having just one
remote after I bought the Harmony 1000 (the better half really liked it
also because with just one touch she could watch just like I did when we
had all the remotes, before the 1000 she would just turn the TV on, now
she does full HD with surround sound). Then I bought the Duet and liked
using the Controller so much that we were back to two remotes. Like
using iPeng since the iPhone is also always close by. So the 1000/SBC
would be my perfect solution in the A/V remote/gadget area (bigger
display then Controller or iPeng also).

So now, how and who do we file the request for enhancement with,
Harmony or SMBU? As I have said since the SBC came out, I am with you
that I would buy a SBC1000 in a heartbeat!

Man, I bet your family cat has a better setup than me ;-)

Remove the touch screen (something people will rarely use anyway), put

Exactly And it has an ir-remote to so if one forgets about the touch
panel you could have your SB4 ;)

Using an ir-remote coupled with visual feedback from the color display
could be nice provided one is near enough to see it. Hopefully it has
display modes with really large text.
As this is a powered device it would not suffer the controllers
irritating sleep modes, waiting 30 seconds to press pause IS an design
error just short of making the product not fit for purpose.
And when wired you can have this without the wifi hassle, this could be
quite responsive.

I would buy one for 24/96 function alone

As I suggested in my blog - IFA in Berlin is next week (4-9 September).
I'd be very suprised if it is not announced there - and it would be a
better announcement if they said it was shipping.
The fact that an order has shipped shows that the device is in
warehouses.

Revo are sure to be hyping their new touchscreen radio at the same
event (press release earlier this week) - Logitech could try to trump it
by saying that theirs is shipping (albeit with smaller screen and
without the regular radio and iPod dock of the more expensive Revo
model).

I agree. It looks like a digital picture frame from a few years ago. I
think it needs to be smaller, or have a bigger screen, even if it's a bit
more expensive. The Classic looks good on a shelf, this looks cheap.

I like the idea of a touch interface, I'm sure it will make using the
SB much easier eventually, but I think I'll try and hold off until there
is a better version. I'm using iPeng at the moment and it's a big jump
in usability for me from the IR remote. But my wife doesn't find it
intuitive to search for music, while she has no problem using an ipod.
In fact she hardly listens to music now because she finds it too
complicated to use.

Has anyone worked out what the USB host and SD card slots are for yet?
Or are they for future use? I have a horrible feeling that they are just
going to be used to load photos to use the Touch as a picture frame.

Neil

I actually made a picture frame last year from an old Portege to double
as a server for Squeezecenter (I figured that if I have to have a
computer in the lounge, it might as well look good), it worked OK, but
got a bit hot to have on all the time.

Well even if you did get help from the CSR at SD I'd guess that would
be the very first question (and suggestion) from a properly trained CSR
that you must be running SC7.4.x for your Touch to function properly.

Same was true with the Boom release, it must run a minimum release
SC7.x level to properly function due to unique features, settings,
controls needed to function properly that are not coded into previous
server releases.

Re: [slim] New Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch spotted !!

2009-08-27 Thread trefork

Got mine yesterday. It's stuck on a Software Update screen. Called
support and talked to Anoop. He claimed that no such product exists. I
tried telling him that I had one in my living room, but he insisted that
no such product existed. So far all I have is a brick, until Logitech
releases it and begins to offer support.

 Squeezebox Touch listed at $299:

Up close, the player uses an intuitive, fun-to-use color touch screen.
From the sofa, you use the included wireless remote.

This is the first mention (that I've seen) of a wireless (not IR)
remote for the Touch. A mini-Controller? If it works with the Touch it
should work for any SB device; I wonder if it'll be available
separately?

What makes you think wireless != IR. Last time I checked, my IR remotes
had no wire ;)

I guess the remote is IR as it's also listed on the Logitech store at
$19.99, which to me sounds like the price of an IR device not wifi.

Squeezebox Touch, Remote Control for Squeezebox Touch
 Remote Control for Squeezebox Touch
 USD 19.99

And they're doing the radio in red?!

That would put the radio at around £110 (probably £130 with UK tax
etc...), too much IMO

Maybe not, long term at least.

The list price for the Boom in the US is $299, the list price for the
Radio is $179. So the Radio is 60% of the price of the Boom.

The street price for the Boom in the UK at the moment is £180, which
would make the eventual price of the Radio (selling at the RRP for a
while) would be £110 inc VAT. Of course it might not work out like that
in the end, but you never know.

Yes - you're undoubtedly right. But other products are described as
having an infrared remote. I don't think of my TV zapper et al as being
wireless devices - other than having, er, no wires :0)

Spotted the Squeezebox Touch ($299) as well as the Squeezebox Radio
($179) at Logitech Store - apparently open for pre-order (?):

Squeezebox Radio in black and red (!) listed at $179 (near bottom at
the moment):

Squeezebox Touch listed at $299:

I've tried to attach a couple of screenshots if the links turns bad in
a little while.

They have been bird-dogging premature web displays by retailers and
(presumably) have been getting them yanked. The same thing happened
before with other new products.

So then what's more funny and fitting, now the products appear on the
company's own website before they are officially announced!

follow the links in post 3 to see pictures

Thanks for the link, but looking at that small display I can say this
won't work for me. I love the display on the boom and think it is
perfect for a clock radio beside the bed. It's a great size, dims
automatically and can be seen without troubles when half asleep. The
only real problem is that it is far too big. Well, also that it is
black, as everything else on the bedside table, including the table is
white...

But the LCD screen on here may work well for a normal day radio, but a
bedside one... no way. These things are usually either too bright, or
need to be pressed to light up.
