Adding a page to edit needed category, is just a matter of inserting
[[Category:Edit Needed]] in the page and after that it will show up
 here:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Category:Edit_Needed

It might also be useful to add some kind of information regarding
what's incorrect, for example like I did earlier on this page:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/PluginSettings

This has been on my 'learn how to' list for a while, so I'll give it a
go.

I think that there a couple of fundamental issues (aside from the
parallel forums):-

1) there are parallel FAQ's at
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/439/5745?selectedcrid=439selectedcid=5745WT.z_sp=Productosid=bit=
which presents a maintenance and search overhead
2) these forums act as substitute support and save lazy/unaware people
from searching by letting them post questions and get answers (a good
service for them and provided by free from the many dedicated
enthusiasts, but think what more those enthusiasts coudl acheieve if
not answering repeat questions).
3) many 'fixes' are frequently reposted, or threads are used as answers
which undermines any wiki
4) my personal experience is that searching the forums is more likely
to get relevant information than the wiki. I am not sure if this is the
search enginer, the tagging or simply the volume of material available.

Perhaps critical mass on the wiki (or FAQ?) is necessary to get over
the perception hump (or actually these fix a huge number of problems
that are therefore invisible).

Michael (or someone else from Logitech), is there some easy way to find
user manuals now when www.logitechsqueezebox.com and
www.slimdevices.com isn't available anymore ?

Searched on Google and found this link which obviously doesn't work
anymore:
http://www.slimdevices.com/documentation/Squeezebox_Boom_UG-ENG.pdf

The manuals can be found here, but it's not really easy to get there:
http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=8873p_created=1217962014p_sid=CPUnqr1kp_accessibility=p_redirect=p_lva=p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MjgsMjgmcF9wcm9kcz0yNzY0LDE2ODEsMjIzNyZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9My4yMjM3JnBfY3Y9JnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9U3F1ZWV6ZWJveCAgQm9vbQ**p_li=p_topview=1

I suppose we could create a wiki page that links to them but will the
above link work also in the future ?
All the query parameters feels a bit scary...

Exciting, isn't it ? A whole new world opens up before your eyes :-)

I'm guessing it's a dead end to try to ask them to just link to our
forum even though it surely would be the best thing to do from a user
point of view. It feels like it would be a lot better if Logitech
support staff spend their time on one forum (this one) instead having
to split between two forums. However, I suppose the same support staff
might handle support for many Logitech products and in that case I can
understand why they want a Squeezebox section on their own forum.

Maybe we can send all the trolls to forums.logitech.com ? Or at least
all users with problems we can't easily solve.

I think wikipedia use the following principle:

1.
They define a page, for example Template:EditNeeded and in this
template page they define the scary error they want to include and it
can also contain the [[Category:Edit Needed]] directive so you can
easily find these pages and fix them.

2.
In a page that contains errors they insert the template:
{{EditNeeded}}
This will include the contents from the Template:EditNeeded page.

Sample template page on my own mediawiki site:
http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php?title=Template:EditNeededaction=edit

And sample usage inside a page:
http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Testing

With this approach, you can make the warning as strong as you like,
it's just a matter of editing the Template:EditNeeded page to contain
the warning you like to show.

When you decide on a solution you like to use, it's probably a good
idea to announce it somewhere in the forum where it's more visible than
in this thread.

Probably it was just a subforum under logitech's main forum. But I'm

it, even when I know what I am looking for.

2. I can't find the beta software. Going through logitechsqueezebox.com
you can through a step where you could go to the beta-stuff, including
changelog etc. That step is not there when coming through

Re: [slim] www.slimdevices.com gone?

2010-05-31 Thread Michael Herger
Michael, I just think some of us are a bit worried about how committed
Logitech management are regarding these community sites (forum and
 wiki).

I understand your point. But I still hope that even if it came to that
point, that there would be enough time to manage a transition which
doesn't require the kind of hacks to pull information to a new system.

It kind of seems like Logitech might want to direct new users
to http://forums.logitech.com instead. It could of course also just be
that all the links haven't been added yet.

That's what the corporate support would want to have indeed. But as long
as they can't provide the same level of service as in these forums, it
doesn't make sense to pull anything down.

As for the wiki: our biggest issue there probably is degrading quality.
While it's been a resource for our own support, they now hesitate to use
it, as there's a lot of outdated information. The community probably could
help the wiki to survive by helping identify articles which need
update/replacement. We could add some kind of header as wikipedia often
does with articles which need some work. Tell the visitor: this is
outdated information and needs work - use it at your own risk.

While we have good numbers for the forums (visitors, postings etc.)
helping us prove the importance of that system, we don't have this data
for the wiki. It's therefore even more important wiki provides a good
level of quality.

I understand that you and the other developers will try to do
everything you can to avoid that anything happens with these sites, I'm
just worried that no one from Logitech management seems to care, at
least they don't show that they care in the public.

IMHO nothing changes as quickly in this organization as the personnel. We
currently see changes in this area which look promising.

My hope is that all our worries are completely unnecessary.

So is mine :-).

http://www.slimdevices.com is no longer reachable today, likewise with
 http://logitechsqueezebox.com. Anyone have any insight?

As SlimDevices as a brand/company has gone away years ago, this site as
the official product site had to go away. Don't ask me why that interim
logitechsqueezebox.com site was built though...

But yes, these two are gone. Marketing has tried to do redirects for the
most important addresses - but missed a few. Thanks for reporting them!

While the above is true for the main www.* sites, others like forums,
wiki, bugs etc. are continuing to live on the slimdevices.com domain. If
some are down right now (can't reach bugzilla myself), then this is
accidental and needs to be fixed asap. Most likely these are temporary DNS
issues.

No, but I could imagine a manager deciding that only Logitech staff
would be allowed to access/log in to those sites. Hopefully that won't
happen. Hopefully nobody will seek to have gmane destroy their archive,
etc. But I could imagine senior Logitech staff thinking the old SD sites
weren't cost effective shutting them down. Many folks have pointed out
the deficiencies of the reviews of Touch. I don't think I saw any
reviews that talked about the availability of applets and SBS plugins.
This suggests that the media kit doesn't mention them.
Logitechsqueezebox.com linked to info about using and building
extensions, and now it's gone. I don't think it's at all unreasonable
to wonder if Logitech senior staff are considering shutting/locking
down these old SD-branded sites, and to make some effort to try to
minimize the affect of such a (possible, hopefully unlikely) action. Or
similar fates like this forums server dying and Logitech deciding not to
replace it even if y'all do have good data backups. I really hope your
optimism is right, especially as I'm unlikely to do anything for a few
days (at least!). :-)

Too early to panic. I see no reason why even the most ... manager would

want to pull a revision control system or bug database.

Michael, I just think some of us are a bit worried about how committed
Logitech management are regarding these community sites (forum and
wiki). As you suggests, the bugzilla and svn repossitory are of course
going to remain, but they could be closed for community access. Chris
has already earlier mentioned that the idea of closing bugzilla has
been discussed within Logitech.

I'm mostly worried about the forum and wiki, especially if something
happens with the servers unintentionally and someone decides that it's
not cost effective to fix the problem. The fact that there doesn't seem
to be any link to them from the official Logitech pages indicates to me
that the commitment to keep these pages available in the future isn't
too high. It kind of seems like Logitech might want to direct new users
to http://forums.logitech.com instead. It could of course also just be
that all the links haven't been added yet.

I understand that you and the other developers will try to do
everything you can to avoid that anything happens with these sites, I'm
just worried that no one from Logitech management seems to care, at
least they don't show that they care in the public.

Yes, I understand that Logitech is a big corporation and it might be
unreasonable that the management spend time announcing their strategy
regarding the community, but it still worries me a bit. If your
management would be a little visible on these forums, all these worries
and rumors could be easily avoided.

I think neither me or Peter is about to panic yet, so far we are just
thinking about what options we have to make 100% sure that the valuable
information on the forums and wiki will be available in the future even
if Logitech decides to decrease their involvement in the community.

It should be said, that I've no indication that Logitech is about to
decrease their involvement in the community besides the fact that there
are less Logitech resources posting in the forum today than a year ago.
I understand that the reason for this is mainly(only?) caused by the
fact that their are less Logitech employees working with Squeezebox
today than a year ago.

My hope is that all our worries are completely unnecessary.

While the above is true for the main www.* sites, others like forums,

 If
some are down right now (can't reach bugzilla myself), then this is

Not too surprising, as Google puts a lot of weight on the domain name.
And, of course, it was Logitech Squeezebox related.

If you're suggesting the site should be left up _because_ it ranks high
in Google search results, I suppose that's for Logitech marketing to
decide. They didn't appear to have anyone maintaining the web sites
any longer. There's no good reason to keep them if they can't maintain

No. They should put a permanent redirect to the Squeezebox pages on the

Anyway, I doubt that the sites have been deliberately pulled. I expect

Not very easily. 'wget' would probably do OK with the wiki (at least
the latest version of each page), but I think you'd want something
special to copy the forum bugzilla (could be as simple as requesting
individual posts bugs + some logic for attachments). For svn, you
mean copying the full repo, including all changes? I haven't bothered
