Hi still newbie talking here
I have received my PI3 and soon will mont it into that LMS and
squeezelite player..
I am wondering if something else can run on that PI3 at the same time
like I would love to have a camera for home invasion type of thing, I
have seen plenty of tuto around here.
Can
Overall, I would suggest 2 SDs or 2 Pis:
- one with PCP, which "guarantees" a nice audio experience
- one with a more general OS, maybe raspbian lite, where you can
install stuff easily and follow tutorials posted on the net
When you're happy with your software setup, if the stack does not look

I would say one Pi3 is more than capable of doing more than one job at a
time. LMS is not demanding, even with lame mp3 encoding.
I have a Pi3 that's more than capable of running full speed arcade
machine emulation at the same time as "motion" security camera type
stuff at the same time as

PCP is linux, the kernel version more or less matches versions used in
Raspbian. PCP can do. The question is: is it worth the extra effort?
If you were a seasoned coder
I've seen the artwork.db file hit well over a GB on occasions so yeah
with LMS i'd give it at least a 8GB card.
Impressive that it's only 85KB base image though. For those doing
backups, most of the card is empty space so zip it it'll shrink
massively.

I think the main issue with a "pre-owned" SB Boom is not screen fading,
this happens too on any model equipped with a VFD screen.
The most important problem is that under heavy continued use, boomers
may split their foam surrounds and you have to replace them. Play
something loud and you would

ok I might try later on, once I familarized myself with the linux world.
on another SD card

In terms of immediate simplicity and low cost, if an Android phone is in
the works, using that device as a player with line out to the stereo is
an option.
I use SB Player in combination with Squeeze Ctrl, from the same
developer. Squeeze Ctrl is my controller of choice, use it for all my
Nice work. Next challenge is to get it on the Spectrum Next playing back
through the SID chips.. :)

Listen to the man !
I have quite good Linux knowledge and picore is still greek to me, If
you do not know the difference between Pcp and Raspian it will be
Martian
*Players:* SliMP3,Squeezebox3 x3,Receiver,SqueezePlayer,PiCorePlayer
If you use max2play you will get raspbian.

right I was going to say that, but can you with the free version
jouteur's Profile:
IIRC Picore runs everything out of RAM and as I understand no swap to
disk so too many applications running at same time and you may run out
of memory whereas Raspbian and Max2play can swap to disk.
bpa's Profile:
piCore is only 20 or 30MB. I think Raspbian is now over 4GB. That's a
huge difference, a lot of stuff has been stripped out.
piCore is as small as possible and you only add what you need. That's
why it takes < 10 seconds to burn an image to a SD card.
Raspbian is so big because it trying to be

And I think that includes the default free space!
Greg Erskine's Profile:
Yes, I zero the free space in the image so zip smashes it nicely.
The pi firmware, both kernels (arm6 and arm7) and the initrds fit on a
32MB boot partition.
paul-'s Profile:
This is why I would start with raspbian, add squeezelite, manage it as
per raspbian, and add software as I pleased, the raspbian way. That will
include lots of features out the box that you don't need, and will work
just fine as a media renderer. IMHO it's probably harder to start with
PCP and

Zram is enabled by default, which sets up a small compressed ram disk
for swap.
But Disk swap is disabled by default..but can be enabled.

My PC is already running LMS for my SBT and the house is all Cat5 cable
or wifi. If I get the Duet remote and receiver can I then just phono
output to his amp and speakers ? Not sure what you mean by receiver not
having output? I assume you mean no visual display like the touch or
radio.
Do all

Would the Duet with remote work in this situation? The duets seem
cheaper on eBay than the radio or boom. Do they all have some form of
output?
Can they all run Spotty, play network music and internet radio?

The Receiver (player) can indeed run Spotty, network music and internet
radio as the Radio can.
Main differences are:
You'll need loudspeakers and an Interface like the Controller (2nd part
of the Duet), a smartphone app or a PC where you can the LMS remote via
browser, as the Receiver itself
