These packages depend on xorg-video-abi-20, which
is provided by xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-2rpi1.

Debian has v23, but no v20.

If the PI needs some special xorg packages which are only available
through rpi repository, then you cannot mix that with Debian or Devuan.

I use my PIs only for headless server applications, so I cannot help you

Yes, that's what I did, on the advice of another Devuan respbrry pi

ascii.

You shouldn't mix repos, and it seems that this is what you are
doing. In particular, raspbian repos should be enabled only if
something very specific to rpi is necessary (e.g., a new version of

Re: [DNG] raspberry pi 3 -- dependency hell

2018-01-23 Thread Hendrik Boom
To get X working on my Devuanized reespberry pi I need to install
xserver-xorg-video-fbdev and -fbturbo.

These packages depend on xorg-video-abi-20, which
is provided by xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-2rpi1.

What's installed is xserver-xorg-core 2:1.19.2-1+deb
  presumably from devuan's repository.

How do I get it to install an older-looking package?

I managed to get aptitude to do that as a proposed fixup to another
problem.

The root problem seemd to be that the raspberry pi package for
xserver-xorg-core 2.1.18.4-2rpi1 comes from oldstable, which matched
jessie, whereas the other devuan packages I have come from ascii, which
matches stretch, which is presumably curren stable.

I suspect the solution, sad though it be, is to reinstall raspbian
jessie, and possibly crossgrade to Devuan jessie, and leave everything
there.

I'm in mixed-distro dependeny hell.

Is there an actual Devuan raspbeery pi release? How do I install it?

Unlikely, even if the package manager installs a new kernel,
I believe Debian does not allow it to reboot a system
that could have important services running.

This would be a time to use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill your
X server. Likely your display manager (xdm and friends)
will restart the X server. If you get a console (as you did
later) or you can try starting your window manager from the
command line with `startx`.

If that fails, from the terminal, remove golang and install
Xorg, and maybe your preferred window manager or DE.

However, Debian changed the default of X not to respond
to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. You may have to customize your
X keyboard setup (typically placing it in file ~/.xinitrc) stuff such as:

# allow Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace to kill X server
# Use CapsLock as Ctrl
setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

# Don't beep
xset b off

# Disable PrintScreen (by mapping it to BackSpace)
xmodmap -e 'keysym Print = BackSpace'

> So why would using aptitude to install golang sabotage X?

I think it could come in part from mixed up or conflicting
dependencies of the packages themselves. If aptitude offers
you a solution to a conflict, it should list in full what
it is one Enter keyclick away from clobbering.

Sabotage suggests a malevolent intent, which is not at all
a good first guess, if you want to keep your feet on the
ground and solve your problems.

I've never, ever used aptitude myself, having found
apt-get and friends
dpkg
dpkg-reconfigure
apt-cache search
apt-cache showpkg
apt-cache show

to be sufficient.

To have a working console is such a amazing place to be,
and just a few steps away from bringing back, by waving the
magic wand of apt-get (or even aptitude) to reinstall Xorg
and friends who were removed.

But then you would probably lose golang, so that still sucks.

You can inspect the dependencies of individual packages with apt-cache show
and apt-cache showpkg. Or record the conflicts listed by
package manager for golang without installing, and file
a bug report with the package maintainer.

Have fun (and hopefully a somewhat working package dependency system)

Ah. I should have figured it out already. It booted, tried to start X,
and failed. Control-alt-F1 and I get a text-only login prompt.

So why would using aptitude to install golang sabotage X?

It did go to dead X while installing golang, before I rebooted. Might
it have rebooted while I wasn't looking? Why would aptitude do that?

Or did it sabotage the desktop or window manager? The so-called GOSFUI?
(is that what Steve Litt called it?)

It seems I have a working, but incomplete system.

The three dist-upgrades were from Devuan jessie to Devuan ascii.
I didn't think anything of it, becuse upgrading my EEEPC laptop from
Devuan Jessie to ascii also had taken seversl dist-upgrades before
everything was non-broken, and it ended up working just fine.

OK. Did that. everything seemed fine after three dist-upgrades.

Then used aptitude to install golang. When I started aptitude

Oh, if you were trying to find out what version you have on an already-running
machine, then /etc/debian_version is probably the best guide.

That sounds good.

/etc/apt/sources.list shows mine is based on jessie. That's pretty definitive.

I think I'll cross over to Devuan first, then upgrade to ascii.

I thought they were all pretty well labelled?

The "current" Raspbian https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ appears
to be based on Stretch.

Older versions are available from
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/ or
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_lite/images/ however you need to
look into each archive directory to fidn out what the version name is.

Just dd your SD card to an HDD somewhre before trying an upgrade - then dd it
back again if the outcome is "suboptimal"?

Now I get to wonder which Debian release the current Raspbian is based on,
so I can guess which Devuan release to migrate to.

And it's probably a good idea to have a few extra microsd cards to play

Same over here. Did that on pi0, pi3. Can't remember if the pi2 was
upgraded to ascii in the same way or from an older raspbian instead,
but it works as well.

From the raspbian packages you only pull "rpi", not main, contrib, or

Another option if you know what you're doing is to debootstrap your
own install from a x86/x86_64 system. This worked for me the last time
I did it for both armhf and arch64 on a jessie system doing a jessie
debootstrap, but I see no good reason why it shouldn't also work with
Ascii. Of course Ascii isn't official yet, so I could be wrong here.

Hendrik,

there are no official images or installation media available for ASCII yet.
But you might want to have a look at
   https://devuan.smallinnovations.nl/?dir=devuan_jessie/embedded
(mirror of files.devuan.org, more mirrors listed at devuan.org main page).

Upgrading from Jessie to ASCII should essentially be a matter of editing
/etc/apt/sources.list, followed by apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade.

For the case these rumors are true: Standard cyanoacrylate super glue
works perfectly well to stick a small heat sink to the CPU - possibly
combined with some additional holes drilled through the housing.

I use several in different situations one also as a set-top box for
personal use and no problems at all. I have not measured it really nor
the set-top box is heavy on the CPU because the thing has a video
decoder chip, however I think is pretty solid and I'm happy with it,
much more than with rpi1 or 2 which kind of sucked also for net/usb
irq steering issues. but well, I haven't tried mining dogecoin on it
or something stupid like that that would occupy cpus all the time :^)
I guess you aren't planning that either.

There is no more need to install Raspbian first.

all Devuan ARM images are now directly installable just like raspian
is. not just the Rpi2/3 image, but all others, will work the same: dd
on a SD card and boot.

and yes, in case you are asking yourself, not even Debian does provide
that ATM. We already include actual embedded platforms as installer
targets, which is handy and consistend with having a unique base.

Assuming that this works for the Raspi 3 as well:

Instead of installing a full Raspbian image - and to avoid the migration
back to SysV init, I use to set up a minimal (SysV based) Raspbian
Wheezy, using the "Raspbian unattended netinstaller", before changing
the sources.list to Devuan Jessie and doing the upgrade.

I am not sure if the latest releases still support Wheezy, so if in
doubt, I'd recommend to use v1.0.7, which is the latest to default to
Wheezy/SysV.

Is that file a full SD card image?
Do you need a whole image?

If not, then this might work:

The way I got Devuan on my RPI3 was by installing the normal Raspbian
distro, then adding the armhf Devuan repositories to
/etc/apt/sources.list, then re-installing everything and purging systemd.

My method is a hack at best, but it has been completely stable so far.
For testing, I switched to using the PI as my general-purpose computer,
and nothing has gone wrong yet. (it's been a few months)

You do have to check that systemd isn't installed as a dependency of
another package, but aptitude is usually smart enough to get the correct
version.
