Hi Mike,

No, the documentation mailing list is not user support.

Please note I am subscribed to this list, so it is unnecessary to send a
duplicate post directly to me.

Replying in-line.

It is unclear what you are asking me to comment on. My experience of
this project goes back to 2010 and beyond, during which time I have
contributed to a number of guides, I am also one of the authors of the
current 7.x guide template.

As explained below, the "Code" style of the 7.x guide template can be
changed to any Font Color the docs team wish it to be.

I am starting to think we might be talking at cross purposes. I am
talking about a style used in the OTT template used to produce our user
guides and I suspect you are referring the styling of code used to
produce the software. These are two entirely different subjects.

Maybe the use of the term "Code" has led to some misunderstanding. Our
user guides do not contain any usable programming code, but where a
guide needs to explain/illustrate something like one or two lines of
Basic code, the guide author uses the "Code" style as defined below.

> If you look through the guides you'll see a lot of inconsistency
> from random processes.

Please cite a few specific examples of where the docs team have
overlooked this apparently endless stream of errors and inconsistencies.

>1. Extension configuration is not specified anywhere

Please explain what you mean by "Extension configuration". It sounds
like a reference to a software OXT extension, which is something the
docs team have no direct control over.

>2. The code style does not color the text, it's done externally or maybe
>using this macro

The 7.x guide template clearly defines the "Code" style:
* Font = Liberation Mono, Regular, 11 pt.
* Font Color = Automatic (ie. Black) with no other effects.
* Area = Light Gray 5
All of those attributes, including Font Color, can be changed in the 7.x
guide template.

>3. The extension also styles text which can conflict with the
>documentation style

So why add an unnecessary possible conflict?

>4. The hotkey description would be better replaced by a link.

What has a "hotkey description" got to do with a documentation template
style?

> The whole process is pretty poor.

I am sure the entire docs team would welcome an explanation of what we
have been doing so "poorly" over the years.

> On top of that, copy/paste doesn't work
> in pdf -

The issue being discussed here is about the styling used in the 7.x
guide template used to produce the original Open Document Text files for
our user guides.

The link you cite one of your own posts complaining about what you
perceive to be defects in the way LibreOffice creates PDF files from ODF
files. This is matter you should raise with the developer and/or QA
teams, since the docs team have no control over this.

Sorry but your macro proposal would provide no additional benefit to the
production of our user guides, but would add unnecessary complications
for our authors.

Hi Olivier,

I would agree that we should pay more attention to a11y in our
documentation. However, I feel the Accessibility Check tool needs
additional work to raise it up to a more useable level.

Just some rough basic examples:

* I run the tool on some of my own documents and it shows headings for
all possible issues in the document, not just those that actually do
exist in the document and need consideration. Creating confusion for
inexperienced users.

* The dialog shows 2 instances of items where "The text formatting
conveys additional meaning." is displayed, when the document actually
has a total of 8 identical issues.

* Clicking the "Go to issue" dialog button highlights a 1/2 special
character, which tells the user absolutely nothing about the
accessibility issue, IF ANY.

I haven't yet checked Bugzilla, but I feel this needs to be drawn to the
devs attention.

You are probably aware that the "Help" button in the Accessibility Check
dialog generates a 404 page error.

Regards
Dave

Why has this unnecessary macro operation been added to chapter 2 of the
"Producing LibreOffice User Guides"?
We already have a perfectly good "Code" style in the 7.2x template. If
the docs team feel the style needs changing/improving then let's simply
agree on a revision of the template, not by adding more complexity to
documentation production.

To assist Elzett in getting started, I have forwarded copies from the
WIP folder of:
DG7100-Preface for 1st. Review
and
DG7101-IntroducingDraw for 2nd. Review.

I have updated the Guide Status Worksheet on behalf of Elzett.
Elzett estimates that the reviews will be returned by 1st. June.

Welcome Elzett,

Our team coordinator will see this message and establish your access to
the Documentation Nextcloud instance.

You are free to choose whatever documentation you want to work on, but
one of our long term contributors (Peter Schofield) has been working
hard to prepare the initial draft of the Draw Guide for LO 7.1 and you
might wish to review some of the completed initial draft chapters.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Attribution as an author of Calc Guide

2021-04-28 Thread Dave Barton
Hi Filipe,

Knowing Stefan from his previous contributions to the project, I don't
believe he is asking for anything more than a simple acknowledgement, by
adding his name to the "Contributors To previous editions" on the
"Copyright" page of this and future guides. This and every other guide
we produce is based on the original OOo guides (most of which Jean was
_mainly_ responsible for), so I don't think it is necessary to add more
explanations of our origins than those that already exist.

Hi Dev,

If you want to review a chapter of any guide, you do not have to ask.

Assuming that you:
  a) Have Access to our NextCloud instance
 and
  b) Are subscribed to the documentation mailing list,
just go ahead and:

  * Download a copy of the chapter from NextCloud.
  * Open the guide status spreadsheet inside NextCloud.
  * Add your name and initials to the guide contributors.
  * Add your initials to the "Rev2" column of the chapter.
  * Post a message to this mailing list to list,
telling other contributors what you are doing
and the estimated date by which you expect to
complete and return your review.

If you are unsure about anything, or need more help/information,
please do not hesitate to ask on this list.

Thank you for wanting to contribute to the documentation team effort.

Dave

I have now completed my review of DG7103-WorkingWithObjects and returned
it to the WIP folder. The Status spreadsheet has been updated.

The reviewed document has a small number of suggested text changes and a
couple of comments.

One comment on a specific point is if we want to expand the guide to
cover the "Legacy" toolbars, or simply add a note to the "Slant and
corner radius" section of this chapter, to avoid misleading the reader.
The same consideration should be given to the Help page:
https://help.libreoffice.org/7.1/en-GB/text/shared/01/05230400.html

Irrelevant. Jean did not specifically identify which of the 7.1.x
releases she was referring to, but the situation is identical in all the
currently available 7.1.x versions.

This is a documentation development list, not a discussion forum about
software bugs. Where did I say that this was or wasn't an issue for me?

I require no instruction about when or for what to submit bug reports,
thank you.

Again, this is a documentation development list, not a discussion forum
about software bugs and features.

Not surprising for alpha code still under development.

BTW I am subscribed to this list, so directly sending me duplicates of
your posts is unnecessary.

Hi Sophie,

Thanks for the pointer. It's true that clicking the "Extensions" button
in the Templates Manager dialog does nothing if a document is not open,
but when a document is open the "Extensions" button in the Templates
Manager dialog opens another internal dialog displaying a scrolling list
of downloadable templates. The above is true for me in LO Version:
7.1.1.2 under both Windows 10 and Linux.

Under LO 7.2 dev. the Templates Manager dialog "Extensions" button is
disabled if a document is not opened. With a document open the Templates
Manager dialog "Extensions" button is enabled and when clicked the same
internal dialog starts to open before crashing the program.

Cheers
Dave

I am another contributor/user calling for a revert. The logic and
reasoning for the bug being opened was irrational.

Hi Olivier,

Thanks for the info.

Do we know what the logic and rational was for removing the "Anchor to
Page" option from the context menu, but keeping it in the "Properties"

Starmath was the name of a module in the original StarOffice suite.
The current LibreOffice module is known simply as Math and the
documentation can be found here:

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] New artwork for title page of user guide chapters?

2021-02-26 Thread Dave Barton

Hello Jean,

Is this what you want?
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/rs5C6XMcj46gse5
It is located in the Contributor Resources>Cover 7.1 folder

I suggest you open this file in whatever is your graphics viewing
software and copy it to the clipboard. Then open your local copy of the
template, select the cover page graphic and paste to replace the
existing graphic.

Obviously there are other methods but this worked best for me.

Best Regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Documentation Team Meeting Minutes February 18th 2021 at 18:00 UTC.

2021-02-23 Thread Dave Barton

While I agreed with Peter's previous proposal for the 5th. character
style to be Liberation Mono regular, not emphasis (italic), I don't see
the need for any extended character styles.

The whole purpose of the Documentation Template is for all the guides to
have a consistent set of agreed styles and style naming we all use.
However, I have just been looking back through some recently published
guides, where there appears to be a number of additional character
styles invented "on the fly" and duplicated names added for identical
styles.

In light of the above, trying to reach any kind of consensus on a new
guide template is a totally futile exercise and I don't intend to make
any further comment on the subject.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Proposed new character style for user guides

2021-02-23 Thread Dave Barton

I am not a translator, but as I understand it, Olivier proposed this
5th. character style mainly for the benefit of translators, see:
https://www.mail-archive.com/documentation@global.libreoffice.org/msg16009.html

While I have many other reservations about the guide documentation
template, I don't believe it will involve much additional effort.
Looking back through some recently published guides there appears to be
a mixed approach to the character style used for naming UI objects
(widgets), where some have the emphasis style and others have the
default style.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] GS7008 Base

2021-02-18 Thread Dave Barton
Just as a little reminder. Have these files been processed through Milos
Sramek's latest "odtclean.py" script:
https://github.com/milossramek/translation-scripts/tree/master/odtclean
Unless you have the facilities to run the script, I suggest you ask
Milos or Oliver to do this before publication.

Kind Regards

Yes I get "Default" in the title field with 7.0.4.2 (x64) and all 6.x
versions, but that is down to my profile, otherwise I get the same as you.

The real issue is that 7.1.0.2 anything entered in the title field of a
new or existing document is lost (more accurately disappears) on save.

[libreoffice-documentation] Metadata Loss LO 7.1.0.2

2021-01-21 Thread Dave Barton

Version: 7.1.0.2 (x64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 53d68d29d90fd16448721a60aad68c28ff0809f5
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19042; UI render: Skia/Raster;
VCL: win
Locale: en-US (en_US); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

Before raising a bug report I would like to know if anyone else is
seeing this issue:

* Normally when a new document is created in Writer the Document
Properties Title field is automatically filled with the name of the
template (eg. Default) upon which the document is based.

* Changing the Document Properties Title field in a new or existing
document blanks the field in the saved file.

* Opening the saved file in any other version of LO restores the field
lost in version 7.1.0.2

Thanks

Sorry for my misunderstanding. I thought you were saying you wanted to
change the documentation template, when in fact you wanted to _APPLY_

Rob, please do not change the template as this breaks the structure of
the book when it comes time to publish the final book.

Maybe you can explain why you feel it is necessary to change the
template we all work with.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Docs wiki

2020-12-31 Thread Dave Barton
Hi Rob,

I mentioned to you previously that the contributor guide documentation
is in a state of flux and what you currently read there should not be taken
as absolute fact.

At the docs team meeting on Oct 31st 2018 it was agreed that in future
screen captures for the guides would be taken from Windows 10. In fact I
offered to make the screen captures for any contributor who either
didn't have Windows 10, or wasn't able to make them. Unfortunately, this
was never adhered to and we continue to have an inconsistent variety of
captures. Maybe this would be the time to reach team consensus on this
issue and document it in the contributors guide.

For an number of different reasons the "Template Changer" extension has
pretty much been abandoned/ignored. Mainly because it is no longer being
developed/supported. While the extension still works perfectly for me,
others have reported that they have issues, possibly related to their
choice, There are 2 methods for applying a template to an existing document:
1. See "Associating a document with a different template" page 224 of
the 6.4 Writer Guide.
2. See "Creating and modifying styles" page 182 of the 6.4 Writer Guide.
The second option allows you to choose between a template stored in your
local templates, or from a file in a different location.
If you don't already have a copy of the 6.4 Writer Guide, download from:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/a/a4/WG64-WriterGuide.pdf

Dave

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Producing guides - add a "Cleaned" directory

2020-12-28 Thread Dave Barton
Attempting to install the oxt in LO 7.0.4.2 (x64) and 6.4.7.2 (x86) on
Win10 generates the following error:

(com.sun.star.lang.WrappedTargetRuntimeException) { { { Message = "Bad
Zip File, ZipException: Zip END signature not found!", Context =
(com.sun.star.uno.XInterface) @1d35768a930 (ImplementationName =
"com.sun.star.packages.comp.ZipPackage") } }, TargetException = (any) {
(com.sun.star.packages.zip.ZipIOException) { { { Message = "Bad Zip

(com.sun.star.uno.XInterface) @1d35768a930 (ImplementationName =
"com.sun.star.packages.comp.ZipPackage") } } } } }

Strangely it installs in AOO 4.1.8 without any error.

Hello Peter and Welcome,

If you have not already done so, please subscribe to the documentation
team mailing list documentation+subscr...@global.libreoffice.org, which
is where we communicate and discuss all matters related the the
LibreOffice documentation and Help production.

Being an open source volunteer project we do not assign tasks to
contributors. We ask them to look for aspects of the various sections of
the LibreOffice documentation where they believe their skills may be
usefully employed. As a general rule (not law) we discuss with or advise
the other team members what we wish to work on via the mailing list.
This often produces useful feedback or guidance for new contributors.

If you would like to speak with our "Slave Driver" :)) oops I mean "Team
Leader" Olivier Hallot and some other regular members of the docs team,
we hold a bi-weekly on line team meeting:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Meetings

The contributor guides are currently in a state of flux, but you should
find sufficient information about joining the team in the "Help produce
documentation" section of our wiki here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation

Best Regards
Dave

I have taken and reviewed the updated Chapter 2 Producing LO Guides, I
have not made any edits, so I did not turn track changes on. However I
have added many comments for consideration.
The previously updated chapter has been move to the "Archives" folder
and "2-ProducingLOGuides-PS-RL-PS-DB-20201222.odt" is now in the WIP
folder: https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/7kRae4WJ4w57tRH

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Word files - Application forms -

2020-12-20 Thread Dave Barton

First, the documentation list is not user support, which is available
via us...@global.libreoffice.org

Secondly this mailing list removes all attachments, so we don't get to
see them.

You provide a link to the UK Gov. Open Document ODF formats guidance,
but the outfit you are dealing with provides forms exclusively in
Microsoft OOXML (*.docx) format. If people want guaranteed 100% MS
compatibility, they should buy and use only Microsoft software.

If the grey backgrounds are a big issue for you, click the writer menu
option "View -> Field Shadings" option. With Microsoft OOXML files you
may have to click that a second time.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Hi Folks,

Even though I got side tracked by the trivialities of "real life" :)))
and missed yesterday's meeting, I am still maintaining a meeting date
calendar for meetings 6 meetings (12 weeks) ahead.

I have arbitrarily nominated December 17th. as the last meeting date
for 2020 and January 7th. as the first meeting date for 2021.

Does anyone else have more suitable proposals for these two dates?

If I remember correctly, the
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Cloud page was
originally created to provide an interim source of information during
the change from ODF Authors to NextCloud.

This is now covered in Chapter 1 of the Documentation Contributors'
Guide, the revision of which is currently under review. The equivalent
wiki pages will be updated when the cloud chapters have been fully revised.

When the Documentation Contributors' Guide is published, I propose that
this "temporary" wiki page be deleted, or at the very least flagged as
having been replaced by a section in Chapter 1 of the guide.

You might wish to take look at:
https://spoken-tutorial.org/keyword-search/?q=libreoffice

Sadly, almost everyone who makes video tutorials concentrates on the
simplistic manual (typewriter) formatting of the Writer module.
Neglecting the other modules and the power of Writer's styles.

I seriously doubt that the video tutorials you propose would make any
real difference in the number of LibreOffice users, because only those
people who are already interested in or using the software would want to
watch those videos.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Contributor Workflow

2020-11-28 Thread Dave Barton
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi Chris,

I am just about to finish updating Chapter 3 Using the Documentation
Team Website (both NextCloud & Wiki), but I am waiting for advice from
another LibreOffice project team to complete this.

Almost everything in that chapter [1] and [2] resources except
"Publishing a chapter or a book" is accurate.

Peter Schofield has updated Chapter 2 Producing LO Guides which is
waiting for more reviews prior to publication. FWIW, my assessment of
Peter's revision is accurate and should be considered as an accurate
statement of how the guides should be produced.

Chapter 4 Style Guide [3] has some proposed edits, but following Jean
Weber's original advice should be considered to be the most accurate and
authoritative.

Chapter 5 Using the LibreOffice Chapter Template is fine, but lacks the
source of the template at:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/3yHCCcrMT3Nc83F

Chapter 0 (Preface) and Chapter 1 Join LO docsteam, could use some TLC,
but are essentially correct.

That's a fairly reasonable assessment of where the "Contributors Guide"
is at at this time.

Dave

I did not say the option never worked. I said that it failed to work for
me when I tried to use it yesterday, even though it had worked for me in
the past. There was no obvious reason for the failure, so I guess it was
an intermittent glitch somewhere along the line.

Hi Felipe,

The current Calc Guide 7.0 NextCloud workspace is the only one which
still has the "Draft" and "Feedback" folders. The other mainstream 7.0
guides have been moved over to the new simplified workflow. I did
consider changing the Calc Guide 7.0 folder structure, but since there
were a number of people actively working on that guide it seemed best to
leave structure alone and avoid possible disruption or confusion.

I see that Steve has given you a few points to consider before moving to
final publication, so I suggest you move copies of all the odt chapter
files and compiled books back into the "Feedback" folder until you are
fully satisfied that the guide is ready for final publication and then
move all the finished content over to the "Published" folder.

The reason I suggest keeping the "Published" folder empty for now, is
that some native language projects look to that folder for files on
which to base the translation or adaptation into their language.

Your choice, but I would also suggest the 3 files currently sitting in
the "Feedback" be moved to the "Archive" folder.

Regards
Dave

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Update on Calc Guide

2020-11-05 Thread Dave Barton
Hi Martin,

This was "briefly" discussed at today's Docs meeting.

"Briefly", because some recent attempts to use the odtclean script have
failed and it was agreed that Oliver will contact Milos about this issue.

Be assured we (The Docs Team) always take into account that the guides
must be made available in a translatable format. However, you must also
understand that the Calc Guide is currently still "work in progress" and
has not yet reached it's fully "Published" state.

Do you propose to:
  * Update the guide status sheet?
  * Leave two versions of Chapter 2 in the WIP folder?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Contributors' Guide

2020-10-24 Thread Dave Barton

Hi Peter,

The fact is that the Contributors Guide has not been properly updated
from Jean's excellent original since we moved from ODF Authors to
NextCloud. There has been some "piecemeal" editing over the last couple
of years, which is why I now want to work with you and any of our other
long term contributors to produce an updated and accurate guide that
will be meaningful and useful for our new contributors.

I found the same confusing "Organized by a Committee" structure for
Chapter 3 that you have found with Chapter 2. In my current update of
Chapter 3 I simply edited what we already had, just to "get the job
done", but I will be returning to totally rewrite/restructure Chapter 3
ASAP.

I agree that the Contributor Guide should be formatted in the same way
as the user guides, even if some of the introductory content is not
really appropriate for an internal document like this. For consistency
we should apply the Version 7.x template to the Contributors Guide, but
the content of this guide has no relevance to version 7.0 of the software.

I propose that with the help of any other long term contributors, to
fully update and finalize *ALL* chapters of the Documentation
Contributors Guide

Best Regards
Dave

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide needs help

Sorry, I don't know which document that would be.

The "Getting Started with LibreOffice User Guide" is separate from the
user guides covering the individual modules of the software. Think of it
as an introductory overview of the whole LibreOffice software package.

The Getting started guide has an Introduction, 14 Chapters and 2 Appendices:
* Introduction
* Chapter 1 Introducing LibreOffice
* Chapter 2 Setting up LibreOffice
* Chapter 3 Using Styles and Templates
* Chapter 4 Getting Started with Writer
* Chapter 5 Getting Started with Calc
* Chapter 6 Getting Started with Impress
* Chapter 7 Getting Started with Draw
* Chapter 8 Getting Started with Base
* Chapter 9 Getting Started with Math
* Chapter 10 Printing, Exporting, Emailing and Signing Documents
* Chapter 11 Images and Graphics
* Chapter 12 Creating HTML Files
* Chapter 13 Getting Started with Macros
* Chapter 14 Customizing LibreOffice
* Appendix A Keyboard Shortcuts
* Appendix B Open Source, Open Standards, OpenDocument

> Do you reuse the Getting Started guide as the user guide for each product.

The user guides for each module go into much greater depth and technical
detail than can be covered in the "Getting Started" guide. Obviously,
there is some duplication of information, but the module guides are
developed separately with some occasional references back to the
"Getting Started" guide where appropriate.

Jean has already produced the first draft of chapter 4 and it is now in
the WIP folder:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/JPAk9trnycXojyT

If you do choose to perform the first review of Chapter 4 please update
the guide status sheet:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/9oxcjcKTjaNy2CW

If you should need any information about the new workflow, I have
updated Chapter 3 Using Docs Team Website of the "Contributors Guide".
A copy is available here:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/c44MMXpJeLsyBiA
The equivalent wiki page is here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/DocumentationTeamInfo/UsingAuthorsWebsite
Note: The information on that page is correct, but I still have some
wiki formatting to finish off.

Hi Marcia,

WIP (Work I Progress) is one of the folders in our NextCloud workspace.
If you have been given access to NextCloud, you can find Jean's WIP
files in this folder:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/ocb9ASst8PAPkSC

If you do not have NextCloud access yet, please post a request to this list.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rafael,

OK. No problem.

BTW. I have modified your entries on the status sheet, not because they
were wrong but we are modifying our workflow and file naming structure.
I am racing to get the contributor information updated and making
changes on-the-fly to the next cloud content in line with the new
workflow and file naming structure. Hopefully, we will all be "on the
same page" (horrible pun intended :)) ) very soon.

Hi Rafael,

Presumably this is the Writer Guide for version 7.0

In which case you are starting the new updated editions of chapters from
the previously published version 6.4, which is a little different from a
first review of updates done by another author.

It's up to you, but you might find it better to take just one chapter at
a time rather than to try and tackle a multiple block of chapters all at
the same time.

Thank you for taking this on.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question: Direct Formatting documentation?

2020-10-19 Thread Dave Barton

Direct formatting is not separately documented and deprecated is not the
correct terminology, it would be more accurate to say it is discouraged.
Nevertheless, there are endless possibilities for Writer to be used in
"Typewriter" fashion, which requires little, if any, explanation to
place an unnecessary drain on our limited documentation resources.

However, the documentation mailing list is definitely not the place for
debating the pro and cons of the software's design and usability. Those
are matters to be put forward to the developers and UX via Bugzilla:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/

Regards
Dave
Please address any reply to the mailing list

Hi and Welcome Chris,

Most of what we do here is updating previous editions of the User Guides
to reflect changes made made to more recent versions of the software. At
the moment we are updating the guides to cover changes made to version
7.0. For most guides a team member will take and update one or more
chapters of a guide, then other team members review those updates.

Unfortunately you have joined us at a time when we are making a small
change to our workflow and the instructions found in our Contributors
Guide book [1] and the equivalent pages on the wiki [2] are in the
process of being updated. If you need any information please feel free
to ask on this list.

You mention that you have created a SSO account, but you need to wait
until our team coordinator (Olivier Hallot) has set up access to the
Documentation workspace on our NextCloud instance. If you haven't
already done so, please subscribe to the documentation
mailing list, by sending a message to
documentation+subscr...@global.libreoffice.org and follow the
instructions that will be mailed back to you.

BTW. You seem to have created you original message in MS Word and
transferred it to Gmail. Regrettably, by the time the list server has
removed the HTML formatting and reduced it to the most primitive form of
ASCII text, your message is only just readable. For future reference,
the list server also dumps attachments into /dev/null

Best Regards
Dave

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] [VOTE] On changes to documentation workflow.

2020-10-19 Thread Dave Barton
Hi Peter,

Totally agree about the date format.

Yes all 5 chapters of the Contributor Guide are on NextCloud in the
"Documentation Team Info" folder:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/apps/files/?dir=/LibreOffice%20Documentation/English/Contributor%20Resources/Documentation%20Team%20Info/Work%20In%20Progress=314869

Unfortunately the guide is in a state of flux, which is why I am keen to
get it updated. We have new contributors coming onboard, but the Guide
book chapters and wiki are quite confusing and in some cases contradictory.

Best Regards
Dave

Hi & Welcome Adam,

Your experience will be helpful.

The Documentation Contributors Guide can be found here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation
You have joined us at a time when we are making some small changes to
our workflow and I am in the process of updating the information there.

If you haven't already done so, please subscribe to the documentation
mailing list, see "How to get started" on the above page. Where you will
also find information about the TDF Single sign on (SSO) facility.
Once you have your SSO credentials post back to this list and our team
coordinator (Olivier Hallot) will arrange access to our NextCloud
workspace for you.

Please feel free to post to this list with any questions you may have.

TIP: Emails sent to this list must be in plain primitive ASCII text,
HTML and attachments are not accepted.

Best Regards
Dave

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Can we please finalise the 7.x template?

2020-09-17 Thread Dave Barton
Hi Olivier,

I did not in any way suggest we enter into a long protracted discussion
about the color of every element of the template. My only recommendation
was that we keep the same green heading colors used since the first
publication of our 3.4 guides. As Jean said in another post to this
thread, she only changed them to black as a compromise to the idea of
different color headings for different books.

I agree that we take Jean's final template as basis for the version 7
Guides, with the recommendation that we keep the original heading colors.

I completely disagree with your suggestion that authors (however we
define them) should be able to choose any color(s) for the book they are
working on. Would the team be happy if I make "Fire Engine Red" the
color for the next Getting Started guide?

Best Regards
Dave

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Proposal for 7.x guide template

2020-06-04 Thread Dave
I keep forgetting LO lists only use outdated teletype formatting, so I
am repeating my previous post in quill pen and parchment style:

Hi Peter,

The original 6.x template has/had:
30 Applied Paragraph Styles + Default
=
Caption
Code
Contents 1
Contents 2
Contents 3
Contents Heading
Definition Term
Figure
Footer
Guide Name
Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3
Heading Caution
Heading Note
Heading Tip
List
List 1
List 2
Numbering 1
Numbering 2
Numbering 3
Page Break
Subtitle
Table Contents
Table Heading
Text Body
Text Body Indent
Text Note
Title

6 Applied Character Styles + Default

Code
Emphasis
Index Link
Internet Link
Keystroke
Strong Emphasis

I think Jean would also like one styled as LOList 1_TextBody to assist
with the creating of list items under some circumstances.

Which styles would you like to see removed?

Originally there was only one 6.x template in the Nextcloud "Contributor
Resources" folder, but for some unknown reason folks kept creating
additional editions with their own modifications. Hopefully, the Docs
Team can agree on using just the one 7.x template and save save
unnecessary extra work for the person compiling the final book for
publication. However, this seems unlikely since there are already two
versions of the proposed 7.x template in the Nextcloud "Contributor
Resources" folder.

Hello,
A long time ago, I participated in the French translation of TheBat!. For
some time now, I've been searching in vain how to contribute

I'd like to get involved at LibreOffice and hopefully make a contribution.

I was looking to complete the documentation on the use of styles in

Hi Toni,

The only chapter templates I can find on the wiki are the obsolete ones
at the bottom of this page:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/User_Guides

It is fairly safe to say that the template in the
NextCloud Contributor Resources folder (currently 6.x) will always be
the one the docs team will have agreed to use.

Unfortunately, most of the documentation information on the wiki is
either out of date or work in progress.

Hi Toni,

If you can provide a link to the documentation where it says "MenuPath"
and I will correct it, For a short period of time was a template with
the character style "LOMenuPath" was being used, but this was changed
when we agreed, as far as possible, to use standard style names in the
current template.

The 6.x template "Strong Emphasis" is the correct character style.

2020-04-01 Thread Dave Barton

Hi Toni,I have to admit that you are much more observant than I am. I
had not noticed the change in Writer's comments menu. In
previous versions (eg. 5.4) there was a comment option to
"Reply", which added a comment linked to the existing one.
If that option still existed it would better serve your
  purpose of notifying subsequent reviewers.

Our guides offer no indication about the intended purpose of
this "Resolve" option and searching several possible resources
uncovers no information. I will make a more thorough search
through past release notes to see if they offer any clue.Maybe it is
time for an enhancement/reversion request bug
report, or we can simply ignore the "Resolve" option and just
add more text to the existing comment.Kind RegardsDave

Question about resolving comments

Hi Dave,Thank you for your reply!
In reviewing comments, if you click on the caret at the

bottom, the choices come up Reply, Resolve, Delete Comment,
etc.  I was hoping to "Resolve" some of the comments without
deleting them, so I was marking some as such.  The reasoning
behind it is in case the next reviewer has the same question
or is curious why something was done in a certain way.

Thank you for your help!
Kind regards,
Toni

Hi Toni,

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Embedded Links 4 Click Through

2020-03-24 Thread Dave Barton

Hi Caroline,

First point, you do not need to cc me in your replies, I do best reading
just one copy of messages sent to the list :)

I am aware that some editors like to develop documentation directly
on-line. Personally this is something I would never consider doing under
any circumstances. I always download the ODF file, edit off-line and
upload my updated draft/review, which means I always have ready instant
access to links that I might need to test/check. Whether or not the
on-line or off-line method is efficient is open to debate.

Due to circumstances prevailing within the LO project in recent years,
we were obliged to move our documentation development to Nextcloud and
learn to adapt to it's shortcomings and limitations. Personally, I don't
like it, but I have learned to live with it.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Embedded Links 4 Click Through

2020-03-24 Thread Dave Barton

Hi Caroline,

We do not publish from NextCloud. This is just our workspace for
developing the documentation in preparation for for publication.

The final published documents (complete with clickable links) are then
made available from our website:
https://documentation.libreoffice.org/en/english-documentation/
and our Wiki:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications

eBooks can take different forms, we make the eBook editions of the
documentation available in PDF. As Dan has already pointed out preparing
the guides in other eBook formats (eg. epub, mobi, azw3, etc.) requires
some additional work.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Team Meeting

2020-03-24 Thread Dave Barton

It was agreed some time ago that the Docs Team meeting would change from
weekly to bi-weekly, but in recent months this routine has not been
maintained.

In another post I have proposed the next meting be held on
Thursday, 26th. March at at 18:00 UTC.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Tutorial

2020-03-24 Thread Dave Barton

A date has not yet been set. I propose the next meting be held on
Thursday, 26th. March at at 18:00 UTC. If others prefer an alternative
date or time please write back to this thread with your preference.

I would make 2 observations on the subject of this thread:

1. There are a number of third party tutorials (including the one by
Bernard John Poole) linked from our wiki:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Third_Party_Resources

2. In terms of available contributors our resources are already spread
much too thinly for us to properly update and revise the existing
guides, without diluting our resources even further to rewrite an
existing publication.

While this is a "nice" idea, it would only serve to detract from the
main work of producing User Guides and the software's Help facility.

Obviously, if any individual chooses to undertake a rewrite of any third
party publication they are free to do so, but I do not think it should
become part of the documentation team's workload.

After a provisional check through of this draft I now realise that the
review/revision requires more time than I have to spare. I have now
removed myself from guide status spreadsheet, so that anyone who wishes
to take this chapter for first review is free to do so.

[libreoffice-documentation] Impress Text Toolbar

2020-03-17 Thread Dave Barton
I am currently reviewing a chapter for the Impress User Guide 6.4.

Part of this chapter refers to the "Text Toolbar" which is not visible
by default. Once the toolbar is made visible it should be possible to
make 3 additional toolbar buttons visible:
* Vertical Text
* Fit Vertical Text to Frame
* Vertical Callouts

Under LO Version: 6.4.1.2 (x64 & x86) Windows and Linux (x64) these 3
additional buttons cannot be made visible and the functions they provide
cannot be accessed via this toolbar.
The issue does NOT appear in:
LO portable 6.4.1.2 or 6.3.5.2 (x86 only)
Linux Mint provided Version 6.0.7.3

I have checked Bugzilla and unless I have overlooked it this issue does
not appear to have been reported yet.

Could someone here please check if this is a real issue or just a glitch
in the configuration of my machines?

TIA
Dave

Hi Dimona,

Thank you for your contributions here.

Apart from a small number of exceptional cases, it has always been the
Docs team practice to edit and review chapters with the "track changes"
facility turned on. This is very useful in helping reviewers understand
the rational behind the original author's changes.

I have taken your draft for first review and updated the Guide Status sheet.

I would agree with Cor. The "Help" facility, both on-line and local is a
set of HTML files viewed in a web browser and the web browser's
navigation controls are used.
So +1 to drop the "Esc" key from the "Getting Help" shortcut keys.

OK you have convinced us that infra was not the cause of the problem.
