Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-20 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Flywire

The only character style in the chapter template is Code, which is Liberation
Mono 10pt. The Code character style is listed in Character Styles on Page 6 in
the template.

However, in the example of code that has been used there three colour character
styles used - green, blue and red. What are these character styles called in
the programming language? Using the same names in the chapter template for
character styles would be good.

The code explanation paragraph has been placed below the example. That was a
good suggestion.

Adding the “s” at the end of the line in the code example has caused it to
wrap. The explanation paragraph has been changed to reflect this.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-19 Thread flywire
The changes look about right, with the exception of the comment line's
missing 's' as the eightieth character, but the template styles need more
work.

1a) Code End paragraph style is not required and should be removed
(approved
https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/2022/msg00391.html)
because
extra line spacing below paragraphs now occurs when paragraphs change.

1b) The code explanation would be better placed after the code to
demonstrate the extra space which isn't obvious before a heading.

2. Code syntax character styles should be added to the template and linked
to the code style. If the styles exist in the document the macro will use
them rather than creating new styles not linked to the code style. The
example code had 5 character styles which have been replaced with user
formatting, bypassing the main template purpose of enforcing consistent
styles. We look forward to a better solution being developed (
https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/2022/msg00341.html
),

Following
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/DocumentationTeamInfo/ProducingLibreOfficeUserGuides#How_to_for_syntax_highlighting_code
adds OOoComputerCode to the document. Possibly (??) the only change needed
is deleting it and changing _OOoComputerBase character style to inherit
from Code. I've previously suggested the lo palette colors should be used.

3. These changes are probably best tested by someone that hasn't been
formatting code for the guides. To avoid all sorts of anomalies I have
hacked the extension and changed the styles, and I'm not confident I've
fully reset it to what others get after deleting the lodev version config.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-19 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Flywire

I have changed to the template and the info about the Code paragraph style as
follows. Also, I have used the code example that you sent me.

The following is an example of code. Please note that lines of code are
generally a single line of text that normally do not line wrap. When samples of
code are entered into a LibreOffice document, there maybe some line wrapping
due to the constraints of line width caused by margins.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-18 Thread flywire
Can you work with the text below?

   1. Paste it into the document as unformatted text (to ensure there are
four characters before 2nd and 3rd lines).
   2. Follow:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/DocumentationTeamInfo/ProducingLibreOfficeUserGuides#How_to_for_syntax_highlighting_code

def open_greeting(args=None):
# Code lines with a maximum length of 80 characters will not wrap over
line
print("Hello World" + 1 * "!")

The second line, exactly 80 characters long, is intended for testing and as
a point of discussion about font size, line length, and line spacing. If
more testing is required I'd suggest the Base Guide 7.3, Chapter 8 Macros,
close_form, the second-last macro in the chapter. Some longer lines would
need adding to test wrapping.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-17 Thread flywire
The following is extra explanation of some of the comments about the code
style.

1. While computer code works on lines, word processors work on paragraphs,
so code lines are entered as paragraphs in the guides. Code lines often
extend past the width of the display device and are wrapped to the next
line. Conventionally, wrapped lines have the same spacing as other code
lines. That is how they are displayed in other documents and that is how
readers expect to see them.

It is not logical to have extra spacing below paragraphs in the code style
when they are paragraphs of the same style. The option should be selected
not to display it. Keeping code together reduces the splits across pages
making it easier to understand, and listings take fewer pages to support
the concepts in the guide.

2. Code is processed in lines but there is no standard line length. I'm
aware of the python code standard PEP 8 using a maximum of 79 characters on
a line. This is likely based on the old 80-character wide terminals, still
a common default for terminal windows.

The Code paragraph style (Liberation Mono, Regular, 11pt) allows 71
characters on a line. Code character styles in LibreOffice guides commonly
use both 10pt and 11pt. At 10pt 78 characters can fit on the line with an
inner and outer margin of 2.5cm and 1.8cm respectively. Increasing code
paragraph width by 0.3cm to allow for 80-character lines would probably be
worthwhile, but at least by 0.05cm to allow 79 characters.

3. Listing captions give them a brief description so readers can more
easily understand their purpose and allow them to be referenced.

The person who wrote this (some years ago) was talking about headings, not
lists. They meant the reader would get lost in the heading numbering

Numbered lists are used to reference specific items. This is important for
both legal AND technical documents.

   1. Can someone give a reference to a LibreOffice Guide section, around
the middle a few levels down, to demonstrate how well lists work without
   numbering?
   2. What does remembering list numbers have to do with which list styles

[libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-16 Thread Peter Schofield
The first draft of the LO chapter template for user guides can be found in the
Contributor Resources folder on NextCloud.

The filename is LO-Chapter-Template-7-4-first-draft.ott

Please review and comment.

The following paragraph styles have been added to the template to help in
creating a good format for future chapters.

Definition Term 2 - for 2nd level options in a dialog.
Text Body Indent 2 - explanation for 2nd level options in a dialog.
List — this creates a simple list instead of using Text Body Indent and line
breaks.
List 1 Cont and List 2 Cont - allows the use of a 2nd paragraph below an item
in an unordered or ordered list.
Legend Numbered - creates a legend for text in a figure. This will make it
easier to translate the majority of text used in figures.

All paragraph styles, except headings, now have the option “Do not split
paragraph” selected to prevent any paragraphs from breaking across pages. This
does mean a writing style change to prevent long paragraphs.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Figure captions in a single line

2022-06-15 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Martin

I will be writing instructions so that the cursor can be in one line for a
figure.

Also, I shall be creating instructions to use a numbered legend in a figure
when text is involved. Any text added to an image or graphic will then be
placed below the figure in a numbered column format. This will allow for an
easier translation as the text will not be part of the figure.

A couple more days and I will be issuing the first draft of the updated
template.

Peter,

keep in mind that this frame must accommodate also the translation of the
text into other languages - and the translations are usually longer than
the original (at least in Slovenian they usually are).
So the solution must offer some flexibility for (even) longer translations

[libreoffice-documentation] Some formatting issues with Base 7.3 Guide

2022-06-10 Thread Jean Weber
A few of the Tips have code within them. This has caused some
formatting to be slightly wrong.

Page 263 (in Chapter 5 Queries) has two Tips. The first paragraph in
the one at the top has a line under it, which should be removed
manually, so it's clear that the code and other paragraphs are part of
the Tip. The paragraph after the first set of code does not have a
line, so I assume it was manually removed, which is good.

On pages 382-383, the two blocks of code within the Tip are not
indented to line up with the text, so it's unclear that they are all
part of the Tip, especially with two of the internal paragraphs having
the end-of-Tip line under them. I suggest the best way to handle this
particular instance is to make it not a Tip, but something else that
isn't indented; perhaps an example?

[You can see examples of Tips with embedded code that are properly
lined up, with no extra underlines, on page 402 and 406. Because the
code doesn't have the grey background, I suspect this was done using a
character style or even a manual font change. Not the best approach,
but the visual result is clear.]

The Tip at the bottom of page 273 is continued on the next page, but
the line under the last sentence on page 273 makes it look like that
is the end of the Tip.

The Tip at the bottom of page 284 is continued on the next page. There
is room for the entire Tip on page 285, so the first paragraph should
be made "keep with next".

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] REMIND: Documentation team call is today at 18:00 UTC

2022-06-09 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hi Peter

Thanks for leading this topic.

Advancing one of my remarks:

On captions of small images (e.g. couple of icons) or tall and thin
images (vertical toolbars) the caption text often flows vertically too
(because the caption is bounded by the image outer frame). That look bad
and IMHO the caption (actually the outer frame) should be wider to
prevent excessive reflow of the caption text. A rule-of-thumb may be to
let the caption have 2 lines at most, and not not exceed X % of the
image width (X to be defined).

Hello Olivier

I am open to change the meeting time and week day, if that helps you to
participate, which will be fantastic.

1. I am willing to continue updating the Impress and Draw guides to 7.4 and
beyond. Not sure yet if it really will be necessary to update to 7.4. Need to
test the beta LO 7.4 against the user guides to see what has changed.

You know you can have the list of improvements in the release notes, right? The
list may be just empty if nothing was added to Impress or Draw or nothing to
add to the guide if an improvement does not show to the user (e.g. performance,
code refactoring, corner-case bug fix...)

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.4

2. The LO chapter template needs to be updated to help reduce the formatting
errors that can occur when preparing user guides for publication. I did send
out an email recently with a few suggestions. Would appreciate some feedback
and ideas. I can easily update the styles and add a few instructions to help
our willing volunteers.

Yes I agree with your remarks in the other mail (sorry to take time to comment)
and I suggest we add these remarks into a new ODT file (and later mutated to
template V 8.0) in the /Contributor Resource/ folder.

I also have my own remarks too.

You know you can have the list of improvements in the release notes,
right? The list may be just empty if nothing was added to Impress or
Draw or nothing to add to the guide if an improvement does not show to
the user (e.g. performance, code refactoring, corner-case bug fix...)

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.4

2. The LO chapter template needs to be updated to help reduce the formatting
errors that can occur when preparing user guides for publication. I did send
out an email recently with a few suggestions. Would appreciate some feedback
and ideas. I can easily update the styles and add a few instructions to help
our willing volunteers.

Yes I agree with your remarks in the other mail (sorry to take time to
comment) and I suggest we add these remarks into a new ODT file (and
later mutated to template V 8.0) in the /Contributor Resource/ folder.

I also have my own remarks too.

[libreoffice-documentation] Update to LO 7.* chapter template

2022-06-08 Thread Peter Schofield
Suggestions for an update to the LibreOffice user guide template to help
prevent formatting problems when user guides are being prepared for issue.

No change required for heading styles already in use.

All other paragraph styles have the option “Do not split paragraph” selected.
This is found in Options on the Text Flow page of the Paragraph dialog. “Orphan
control” and “Widow control” are deselected.

Selecting “Do not split paragraph” does mean that there has to be a writing
style change because long paragraphs cannot be used. Suggested paragraph length
is no more than six sentences using approximately 25 words in each sentence.
This suggestion comes from Simplified English rules to assist in making a
document easier to read. I have come across some long paragraphs in the LO user
guides and these long paragraphs will create formatting problems.

List paragraphs - length and number of sentences to kept as short as possible,
but explain the list item. Long List paragraphs defeat the object of creating
an unordered list.

Numbering paragraphs - these are normally used in procedures and should only
contain one step in the procedure. Normally, only one sentence should be used.

Figures and illustrations - these should be positioned as close as possible to
the paragraph containing the reference. Preferably at the top or bottom of the
page the paragraph containing the reference, but that is not always possible.

Figures and illustrations - to help prevent large gaps appearing on a page, the
frame size should be adjusted with the "Keep ratio” option selected so that the
figure or illustration is positioned on the correct page. This will prevent any
distortion of the figure or illustration when adjusting width or height of the
frame.

Please let me know what you think of my suggestions and any suggestions you
have to improve the template.

Hi Olivier,

Thank you for publishing this version of the document.

I am interested in reviewing / updating Chapter 3 (Tables) and have put
my initials against it in the tracking spreadsheet. This chapter makes
use of the Media_without_Macros.odb database and, in case it needs some
updates for better figures or any other reason, I have added that item
to the spreadsheet and placed my initials against it.

I'm not sure how long my work on these two items will take and have
reflected that in the spreadsheet too.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Frame styles question and captioned image resizing.

2022-06-04 Thread Cor Nouws

Hi Olivier,

Applying a frame style to a graphic object in a text document does not
mean that all style properties listed in the frame style dialog are
applied.

In particular, the "anchoring", “keep ratio”, “auto size”, “relative
to”, “width” and “height” found in the Type tab of a frame style are not
applied to the object.

Which is rather confusing, unless it’s a bug.

Maybe I'm adding confusion, but it might also help understanding what
settings work in frame styles and what not..

I've experienced that when you create a custom object style from an
image/object that you gave some properties, there is no way to exclude
the width & height òr to make sure that the aspect ratio is preserved
when the style is applied to an object. Also changing the style's
definition in the xml-styles file, didn't help.

Cheers,
Cor

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Frame styles question and captioned image resizing.

2022-06-04 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier

If you adjust frame size for a figure, the image inside the frame automatically
adjusts its size to fit the frame. However, you have to select “Keep ratio”
option to maintain the correct image size. I do this adding figures to the user
guide.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Frame styles question and captioned image resizing.

2022-06-04 Thread Olivier Hallot

Part of the issue is answered by Regina

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32484#c22

One reason of the problem is, that ODF allows the setting "anchor-type"
as direct attribute of an object and as part of a style. If both are
present, the object attribute "wins". Currently LibreOffice writes it as
direct attribute and do not include it in custom defined style. Only the
predefined styles have set the anchor-type as part of the style.

If you derive your custom style from an predefined style, it will
inherit the setting. Currently there is Watermark with anchored to page,
and Frame, Graphics, Marginalia and OLE anchored to paragraph, and
Formula and Labels anchored as-char.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] How to spell "CustomShape"

2022-06-03 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Regina,

Taking the sentence you gave as the first example " Many Custom Shapes have
handles to alter the geometry".

I do not see any problem if the term "custom shapes" is translated in this
context. Actually, I think that keeping it in English only will look weird
when the rest of the sentence is translated. Also, it might be better to
use small letters as in "custom shapes".

For example, in pt-BR (translating "custom shapes"):
Muitas formas personalizadas possuem alças para alterar a geometria.

The example above looks better to me than (using "Custom Shapes"
capitalizing first letters):
Muitas Custom Shapes possuem alças para alterar a geometria.

For doc issues a simple method probably works, but for bug reports we
can't offer a "customer hotline". Crowdsourced bug triaging needs to be
based on accounts as the reporter has to give feedback.

There could be a drop-down with a list of entities the bug refers to (UI,

a field with http of page reference).

It would simplify the process for the reporter (i.e a user) and add some

If this is all overhead, then we should generate a mail account, like

In ODF 1.3 part 3, section 10.6 the term "Custom Shapes" is used to
describe the element . So I believe you could use
"Custom Shape(s)" to write this guide. It would be suitable from the
standpoint of developers.

So you mean a sentence like the following would be OK?
Many Custom Shapes have handles to alter the geometry.

Would it be clear that the part "Custom Shapes" should not be translated?

Using "custom shape" with lower case would surely be translated to
"forme personnalisée" (fr) or "benutzerdefinierte Form" (de), for example.

Or do you have an idea how to write something similar to
"Fontwork-shape" or "Isosceles Triangle"-shape?

Or so ?
Many "Custom Shape"-shapes have handles to alter the geometry.

Or using a style to make clear that "custom shape" is a technical term?
Italic for example? 'Small capitals' seem to be not available in the Wiki.

Kind regards,

But “CustomShape” is the umbrella term for those shapes, which have an

Many of these shapes have handles and shape specific glue points. For
all of these shapes and only for them the tool “Toggle Extrusion” is

CustomShape from other kind of shapes.

We have already page

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Remarks_on_Fontwork_and_TextWarp
There the spelling "custom-shapes" is used.

The Draw guide has "custom shape" in chapter "Text callout".

In the style dialog in the UI we have on tab 'text' the wording "Custom

I am looking for a spelling that makes clear, that it is a technical

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] How to spell "CustomShape"

2022-06-02 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Regina,

In ODF 1.3 part 3, section 10.6 the term "Custom Shapes" is used to
describe the element . So I believe you could use
"Custom Shape(s)" to write this guide. It would be suitable from the
standpoint of developers.

[libreoffice-documentation] How to spell "CustomShape"

2022-06-02 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi all,

I'm going to write a Wiki page about CustomShapes addressed to
developers. Text therein will be for example:

1 What is “CustomShape”?
“CustomShape” is a technical term and does not mean “made by the user”.
But “CustomShape” is the umbrella term for those shapes, which have an
enhanced geometry. These shapes are written as element
in the file markup in ODF format.
Many of these shapes have handles and shape specific glue points. For
all of these shapes and only for them the tool “Toggle Extrusion” is
active in the UI. Looking at it allows to quickly distinguish a
CustomShape from other kind of shapes.

We have already page
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Remarks_on_Fontwork_and_TextWarp

There the spelling "custom-shapes" is used.

The Draw guide has "custom shape" in chapter "Text callout".

In the style dialog in the UI we have on tab 'text' the wording "Custom
Shape Text".

I am looking for a spelling that makes clear, that it is a technical
term for a kind of shapes and that "custom" in this context has nothing
to do with "user".

Kind regards
Regina

[libreoffice-documentation] Draw Guide

2022-05-31 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier

Just going through the Draw Guide you uploaded to NextCloud and I am finding
errors.

1. Chapter page added after the cover page. This is not required as it is
repeating info found on the cover page. Deleted.
2. Copyright page has been added after each chapter page. This is duplicating
the copyright page after the front cover and is not required. Deleted.
3. Contents page added after each chapter page. This is not required in the
full user guide. Deleted.
4. I have corrected the gaps that appear because figures moving to next page.

[libreoffice-documentation] More about publishing printed copies of user guides

2022-05-27 Thread Jean Weber
VERY IMPORTANT
Whoever does the publishing will need to set up a new account, whether at
Lulu or somewhere else. I will not be turning over my account to anyone
else, or allowing anyone else to use it.

SOME BACKGROUND
Around 15 years ago I set up the account at Lulu. At the time it was the
only practical choice for a print-on-demand service for a person or
organisation that does not want to deal with fulfilment. I think it is
still the best choice. One can sell through the Lulu bookstore (with or
without an ISBN) and/or put the book into “global distribution” which gets
it into Amazon and other outlets. (HOWEVER, if you choose global
distribution, you must have an ISBN and the cost of copies is much higher
than if sold only through the Lulu bookstore. Also, the requirements for
PDFs are sometimes more difficult to meet. Long story.)

Many people use Amazon Kindle Direct (which, despite the name, does
paperbacks as well as ebooks), but their choices are more limited, and
potential US tax hassles (or the requirements to legally avoid them) are
greater. I won’t deal with Amazon or their terms of service, but someone
else might not mind.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Process for creating printed books at Lulu

2022-05-27 Thread Jean Weber
Obviously, the easiest solution is to have someone with a Mac shrink the
pages, after they or someone else (such as Olivier) has done some necessary
pre-processing. Olivier or whoever can then do the rest of the publishing
process.

I will write separately about pre-processing and the rest of the publishing
process. The 6x9-inch covers are also an issue, which I will write about.

Naturally, I found myself dizzy like a drunk cockroach(*).

The access to style is obscured and I could not find the full Search and
replace dialog, except by typing Ctrl+H.

I'll keep trying, anyway.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Process for creating printed books at Lulu

2022-05-27 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hello Jean

Em 24/05/2022 21:50, Jean Weber escreveu:

Hello Olivier and Docs Team,

I have started writing up my process for creating printed books
through Lulu. Some steps may need to be modified if Olivier or someone
else takes this over who does not use a Mac. I will explain.

I do the printed books in a 6x9-inch size, not the full A4 of the
PDFs. This is to save printing costs and thus the cost to purchasers.
Lulu requires a book file (PDF) to be provided in the selected page
size, so I have to create a suitable file. It is quick and easy to do
on a Mac: I use the Mac's built-in Preview app to "print" the original
A4 PDF to a PDF with a 6x9-inch page size. I do not know what the
equivalent method may be on Windows or Linux. I may have asked this
question here before, but I do not recall the answer (if any).

If I get it right, the A4 page is shrunk into a 6x9in, right? It is
*not* the same as rezising the page styles to 6x9in page (where text
will reflow and total pages will increase accordingly).

My maths says the book is ~75% the size of the current A4 document, same
number of pages.

I'll test this operation in Linux (I think it is feasible)

Of course, someone else could avoid that step and produce the books
full-size (A4) and purchasers would have to pay the extra printing
cost (probably double) and postage cost. Thoughts?

I admit I have not purchased one of Lulu prints, but I guess font size
and image quality won't suffer.

(There are some other issues to consider, which are unrelated to the
page size. I will mention them in separate notes.)

A wiki page on the topic, with do's and don'ts is my suggestion.

Regards
Olivier

Pages 28, 42, 73, 118, 143, 186, 226, 298, 328, 361: the list

the explicit "restart at 1" from the first list item in each chapter.
There are also a lot of bad page breaks that were not in Peter's copy.
I am not going to list them

I will fix these problems in the ODT and PDF of the full book, before

I have checked the Impress guide against my copy and there are formatting
errors galore. Definitely ruins the look of what should be a well presented

Is there a difference between the template used to create the chapters and the

I have created both books using the chapter template.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Impress Guide 7.3

2022-05-27 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier and Jean

Just had a quick look at the Draw Guide and have found the following errors.

1. Extra page between front cover and Copyright page. The title Draw Guide 7.3
has direct formatting on top of Text Body style. Is there a need for this page
when there is a cover page?

2. Paragraph (Book = 1) added after copyright paragraphs.

3. Space added before each chapter title on the chapter title page.

4. What is the difference between the chapter template used to create the
chapters and the template used for this version of the user guide. The
formatting for the book is now incorrect. For example, Figure 5 should be on
Page 20 below Figure 4. This is easy to fix, but the rest of the book has
incorrect formatting. I think it is to do with spacing, but cannot find the
problem at the moment.

Two general comments for the next version:
* most functionality for creating queries can be done in either Design View

the other could also be used
* SQL code examples would be more useful if they were directly executable
using the example database which generally isn't the case

what the other members of the Documentation Team think about changing the
default UI.
To me the Standard UI is good to use.
In my opinion, what is being proposed does is not a good step forward.
Also, there are several spelling errors in dialogs, menus and toolbars that
should be fixed first before there is a change of default UI.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide - updates to Chapters 5 and 6

2022-05-25 Thread flywire
Olivier, Steve, Vikram, Pulkit

My understanding is:

*
https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/2022/msg00353.html
- Vikram commented on BG7305-Queries_SF_FW_SF_VG_10Apr2022.odt but it was
not the 2nd Review. I worked through everything carefully when I did the
1st Review and I would expect the read-through by Vikram should have been
adequate for the 2nd Review.
*
https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/2022/msg00368.html
- Pulkit checked out BG7305-Queries but didn't complete the review.
* I have checked out BG7305-Queries_SF_FW_SF_VG_10Apr2022.odt to give it a
read-through as the 2nd Review unless someone advises otherwise in the
meantime.
* After 2nd Review the chapter needs: update tracking sheet, process
comments, update contributors, and submit for publication.

[libreoffice-documentation] Process for creating printed books at Lulu

2022-05-24 Thread Jean Weber

Of course, someone else could avoid that step and produce the books
full-size (A4) and purchasers would have to pay the extra printing
cost (probably double) and postage cost. Thoughts?

(There are some other issues to consider, which are unrelated to the
page size. I will mention them in separate notes.)

Jean

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] motion paths

Hi Daryl,

something to happen by "on click" but no matter what I try I only ever get
the start and the very end of the path. I NEVER see the object traveling

What value has the field "Duration" when you edit the animation?

I have seen in other software where I can set a portion of the path (if the
path goes from 0% to 100% I can set the "start" at 12% and the "end" at
75%, or whatever).

That is not possible in LibreOffice. The shape always starts at the
start of the path, even if the shape position is far away from the path.
So you should always start the path in the center of the shape.

I also do not see anything (it's grayed out) in the

direction box. I guess I'm just missing something.

The path has triangles in its ends, which show the motion direction.

What am I missing?

Which version of LibreOffice do you use, which operating system?

Kind regards,
Regina

[libreoffice-documentation] motion paths

2022-05-24 Thread Daryl Spitfire
Hello, I have been using your various document apps for awhile, but mostly
in uninteresting ways. Now I am wanting to animate an object. To learn I
just made a blank Impress document and made a shape. I can select and edit
it okay. I watched several videos and looked up several things in your
"help" pages of your documentation. I tried to follow but I guess I'm
either too dumb or impatient although I've been messing with this (motion
paths and animations and transitions) for a few hours. I am able to animate
the *appearance *of text and lines and such but I get stumped when I try a
"motion path". I can create (or specify) the path (such as freeform, curve,
star, etc.) but when I either click "Play" (at the bottom of the animations
pane) or just run the slide show, it part-way works in that I can set
something to happen by "on click" but no matter what I try I only ever get
the start and the very end of the path. I NEVER see the object traveling
along the path.

I have seen in other software where I can set a portion of the path (if the

75%, or whatever). I also do not see anything (it's grayed out) in the
direction box. I guess I'm just missing something.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Daryl

Hi Peter

Thanks for the text. Files are updated.

On the covers, the master document has 2 additional page styles - cover
and back cover - with background image accordingly. The cover is right
only and the back cover is left only.

Kind regards
Olivier

A copy of the file containing the back cover text for the Draw and Impress has

Please download if you require a copy. It is in ODT format.

The LO template for user guides was not used for this text and all the
formatting on the text is direct formatting. The LO template was not suitable.
This is why the back cover with text is in PNG format. That way it did not
create any problems when the user guides are prepared for publishing.
