Close the program and check that the file save\country.dat is present. I have
seen multiple reports of this file disappearing. I speculate that this is due
to an overzealous virus

I ran into a similar problem. I'm not sure what I did wrong... but the
settings on the Reports tab in preferences was messed up when I copied
the save directory. Probably some changes in the .cfg file.
I fixed it by merging the DX4Win.ini file from 8.01.

Another possibility is if your folder options normally hide the
extensions for known file types... if

It is installed as lower case /save ...

tape is .text , probable saved as .txtor .doc
