Re: [Wikimedia Education] Help quantify the education program’s impact on new active editor numbers!

Hi,

There might be some legal issues with this. Has anyone looked into
whether GDPR permits this information to be shared if a user's
information is protected by GDPR?

More generally, I'm not comfortable with this idea for privacy
reasons. Unless a user has consented to this type of information being
shared with an external entity, I think that it shouldn't be shared.
However, education entities can go to their participants and request
consent for this type of information sharing.

[Wikimedia Education] Catalog of Wikimedia video or interactive tutorials

2020-03-10 Thread Pine W
Hello,

Some time ago, I started to gather information regarding existing and
planned tutorials for Wikimedia which are in a video or interactive format.
Initially this information was on Meta in a place which was difficult to
find. I moved the content to
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/NavWiki/External_Resources. I hope that
this will be a helpful starting place for anyone who is looking for
existing or planned tutorial resources. Also, if someone creates or updates
a tutorial, I hope that they will update the information on that page.

The tutorials may cover topics for Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia
projects.

Currently, resources are listed which are in German, Spanish, Serbian,
Hebrew, and English. Also, I believe that the Arabic language tutorials
which are currently listed in the section for unfinished resources have
been completed, and I am planning to reach out to request an update
regarding the status of those resources.

Ever onward,

[Wikimedia Education] Update regarding Wikipedia video tutorial project ("NavWiki")

2019-11-11 Thread Pine W
Hello colleagues,

I have resumed work on my video tutorial project for Wikipedia and the
sister sites. I am hoping that eventually there will be video tutorials
and/or interactive tutorials in multiple languages, but for now I am
focusing on producing a small number of videos for English Wikipedia to
test the process and to get feedback from the community. These videos will
be designed for "organic" new users who become active on Wikipedia without
first being involved in a formal program that provides guidance for new
contributors, but I think that the videos may also be useful for formal
Wikimedia program organizers to share with their participants.

A project space is live on Outreach Wiki:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/NavWiki. I invite you to look at the
organization of the space and let me know if you have any feedback.
Comments and questions may be left on the project talk page
.

I am hoping to publish two videos for English Wikipedia by the end of 2019,
and to collect feedback on them until at least January 2020 before deciding
on significant next steps. If the feedback is positive then then I hope to
produce more videos in the future and/or to adapt the videos for additional
languages.

If you would like to sign up for the project newsletter, you can do that at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_message_delivery/Targets/Tutorials_Newsletter.

and a half of great enhancing of Basque Wikipedia (more than 2.500 students
adding more than 1.5 million words on fundamental topics) the Basque
Government has announce us today the extension of the funding for four more

In this four years we will try to strengthen our Educaton Program but also

Re: [Wikimedia Education] [Wikimedia-l] Video tutorial regarding creating Wikipedia references with VisualEditor

2019-03-18 Thread Pine W
Hi Avery,

You might be interested in my final report from the previous grant, which
is at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Motivational_and_educational_video_to_introduce_Wikimedia/Final#Learning
.

I was not planning to publish the referencing videos to YouTube, but I
think that's a good idea. Do you have any suggestions about how to make the
videos be easy for people to find if they search for Wikipedia help with
referencing on Youtube? If so, I would be appreciative if you'd add those
comments to the project talk page at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:Project/Rapid/Pine/Continuation_of_educational_video_and_website_series
.

Accessibility and translation are very much in my mind as I'm working on
the current script. An issue to keep in mind is that the various language
editions of Wikipedia have variations in policies and workflows, so
translation alone may be insufficient to adapt a video or tutorial from one
language edition of Wikipedia to another language edition of Wikipedia.

I like the interactive nature of the Wiki Ed tutorial. WMF's Growth Team is
developing in-context help, which I think is also a good method for
teaching. My guess is that the optimal ways to teach how to edit Wikipedia
will be a combination of methods including video, interactive tutorials
possibly with quizzes and certifications, in-context help, and
individualized help. As an example of how the methods could be blended, I
think that in-context help could offer video tutorials of varying lengths
to cover certain subjects.

Thanks for the comments.

Re: [Wikimedia Education] [Wikimedia-l] Video tutorial regarding creating Wikipedia references with VisualEditor

2019-03-03 Thread Pine W
Hi Bekriah,

Thanks for sharing the Arabic and Hebrew resources. Would you please add
the those resources to this catalog of tutorials
?
My impression from my brief look is that the Hebrew tutorials use
JavaScript instead of video, but the goal is similar to instructional
videos, so I think that adding those tutorials to the catalog would be
good. There is a section in the catalog for tutorials which are in
development and not finished. I added a column to the tables to indicate
whether a tutorial is a video, interactive, or both.

Below are some additional comments that I have regarding the possibility of
adapting the video that I am producing for diverse language editions of
Wikipedia.

For the video that I am currently developing regarding referencing with
VisualEditor, I am keeping translatability and accessibility in mind. I am
hoping that the subtitles can be translated into non-English languages, or
at least languages which Google Translate understands well, with relative
ease.

The images and animations in each language edition of the video would
ideally be in the same language as the subtitles. Changing images and
animations will likely require more time than translating the subtitles. My
current pilot project in English will almost certainly finish this month.
After the end of this pilot project, I might request funding for a full
adaptation of the video into a non-English language, and if that goes well
then I could request additional funding for additional adaptations.

I know enough Spanish that I could probably adapt English Wikipedia videos
for Spanish Wikipedia with a relatively modest level of help from native
Spanish speakers, but I would need more support for languages which I don't
know well such as Romanian or French, and even more help for languages
which are written in diverse alphabets and which Google Translate
translates poorly or not at all. I would like to help with adaptations for
diverse Wikipedia language communities.

I am mindful that an issue when adapting instructional videos for diverse
Wikipedia language editions is that there may be variations in policies and
workflows. I would want to account for those variations when creating
adaptations of videos.

At this time I can't promise that this English language video will be
adapted for additional language editions of Wikipedia to use, but I think
that there is a good possibility that if the English version of this video
is well accepted and used by the English Wikipedia community, then the
video may be adapted for more language editions of Wikipedia. :)

Re: [Wikimedia Education] [Wikimedia-l] Video tutorial regarding creating Wikipedia references with VisualEditor

2019-02-26 Thread Pine W
Thanks very much for the information regarding these videos in Swedish,
Basque, and Spanish. I'm impressed by the quality of the recent videos in
Basque and Spanish that I watched, to the extent that I understand them. In
the past two to three years have I also learned about recently produced
instructional videos through publications such as affiliates' reports and *This
Month in Education* .

To the extent that I understand the video in Spanish that Dennis linked
,
I think that it is very good, so I'm now thinking that I will suggest to
WMF that I not create a Spanish version of the video that I am producing,
but in the future if there is interest in having instructional videos in
Spanish regarding different subjects that are not already covered by
existing videos then I may propose creating Spanish versions of videos that
I plan for English Wikipedia, Commons, or other projects.

As far as I know, there is no easily accessible catalog of what Wikimedia
instructional videos exist. Finding some instructional videos is possible
using the Commons category tree and by searching for file names on Commons,
but not all videos are easy to find using those methods, and several
instructional videos that I found on Commons are outdated. I boldly created
a page here

for cataloging Wikimedia instructional videos, and I would like to invite
people to expand that list, especially for videos which contain current
information and have good production quality. Hopefully having a common
catalog will help those of us who produce videos to get ideas from watching
others' videos, and to consider whether to translate or reuse portions of
existing videos. If someone thinks that they have a better idea for
cataloging existing Wikimedia instructional videos, or if there is a
catalog that already exists, please reply to this thread or contact me off
list.

Regarding documenting my process, I am placing notes

on Meta that are in addition to the grant proposal, the talk page for the
grant proposal, and the scripts.

Thanks again for sharing information.

[Wikimedia Education] Video tutorial regarding creating Wikipedia references with VisualEditor

2019-02-25 Thread Pine W
 Hello colleagues,

*Overview*

A video tutorial for creating references on Wikipedia with VisualEditor is
in development for English Wikipedia and possibly also for Spanish
Wikipedia. Publication is likely to happen in March 2019. If this tutorial
is well received then additional tutorials may follow.

If you would like to receive notifications regarding the availability of
draft or finished tutorial products, or to learn additional information,
then please continue reading below.

*How can I request notifications for when drafts or finished products are
ready for review?*

If you would like to receive a notice when a draft or finished product is
ready for public review then I invite you to go to the the project talk
page and follow the link to the newsletter subscription page [1]. During
the development of this single tutorial the newsletters are likely to be
short. I am likely to send approximately 3 to 6 notifications to
subscribers between now and the end of this mini-project.

(The reason that I am not including a link to the newsletter's subscription
page directly in this email is that I may change the name of the newsletter
in the future, and I prefer to minimize any potential confusion and the
number of redirect pages, so I think that including a link from this email
to the talk page is preferable because the location of the talk page is
likely to remain stable.)

*Background information*

Some of you may remember the project that was originally named LearnWiki
[2]. For various painful reasons that project was not completed within the
original schedule and budget. However, I continue to believe that video
tutorials Wikimedia projects could be very useful for new contributors, and
also for helpers who could use the videos to demonstrate concepts to new
contributors. I think of this project as being a pilot iteration for
"LearnWiki version 2.0", or maybe "LearnWiki 2.0 beta 1", with a major
change between this effort and the original LearnWiki project being how the
project is executed. The goal for this tutorial remains aligned with the
original vision for LearnWiki. I believe that I know more about project
management than I did when I attempted LearnWiki version 1.0.

WMF approved a rapid grant for me to develop a single tutorial module [3]
regarding creating Wikipedia references with VisualEditor. This tutorial is
in development, I and I plan to publish the finalized script and video in
March 2019. Depending on the amount of remaining funds after development of
the English version of this tutorial and on whether WMF agrees, in addition
to an English version of the tutorial I may also produce a Spanish version
within the budget of the current rapid grant. Additional translations or
derivative versions would be welcome from anyone who would like to create
them.

If this first tutorial is well received then I may request funding for
additional tutorials.

Within the next few days I plan to publish the first complete draft of the
script for the referencing tutorial. I will place a link to that draft on
the project talk page [1], and I am likely to create links from the same
talk page to further drafts and additional tutorial products. If you would
like to receive project updates then please watch the talk page and/or
subscribe to the newsletter.

I welcome any comments or questions that you have, either on a mailing list
or on the project talk page [1].

Yours in service,

Pine

Thank you to the people who contribute to the Education Newsletter. I scan

especially interested in the video tutorials for Serbian Wikipedia and the

Hi Alexandre,

Thanks for sharing your op-ed and for requesting comments.

When I read your article I am concerned about this statement: "Some advice
for Olivia Colman: rather than “sending an e-mail to Wikipedia”, she can
edit Wikipedia herself, like everyone else". That comes across to me as
encouraging violation of English Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest guideline
. Can you
explain why you encouraged directly editing Wikipedia instead of placing an
edit request on the talk page or sending an email to OTRS?

Service
To: ,

Dear all,
One recurring phenomenon we encounter when we present Wikidata to various
audiences, is the enthusiasm with they react to the Wikidata Query Service,
and the possibilities it offers for extracting specific information from
the vast network of linked and structured data contained in Wikidata. This
enthusiasm is not surprising, as the query feature of Wikidata is quite
unique within the landscape of information services available today.
The Wikidata Query Service is powered by SPARQL – a semantic query language
for databases. Unfortunately, for users who are new to Wikimedia platforms,
there is currently little instructional material on how to learn SPARQL for
use in Wikidata. At Wikimedia Israel we believe that a user-friendly
tutorial to Queries/SPARQL will attract new users to engage with Wikidata
and help build a community around the project.
In recent years, Wikimedia Israel has developed online instructional
materials, such as the Wikipedia courseware and the guide for creating
encyclopedic content. We plan to use our experience in this field, and in
collaboration with Wikimedia Deutschland, we intend to develop a website
with a step-by-step tutorial to learn how to use the Wikidata Query
Service. The instructional material will be available in three languages
(Hebrew, Arabic and English) but it will be possible to add the same
instructions in other languages. We are quite confident that having a
tutorial that explains and teaches the Query Service will help expand
Wikidata to new audiences worldwide.

*Best regards,*

Re: [Wikimedia Education] EDUWiki UG: wrapping 2018 and looking forward to 2019!

2019-02-06 Thread Pine W
Hi Shani,

Thanks for your email. I have been waiting to reply in detail until I have
fewer interruptions and short term issues to address. I am now in a better
position to think about this discussion. The delay has also helped to
alleviate my earlier feeling of surprise, and I hope that I can now respond
calmly.

I drafted this email offline, but I hope that I retained the content of
your message to me. I bolded the text that I took from your previous email.

* Filip already addressed some points, so **I’ll** add some food for
thought (I'll try to keep it concise, since as you well noted, **I’m*

* very busy these days): * Yes, a lot of effort is going into setting up
the Education User Group, but these are not only my efforts; rather **it’s*
* a group effort. As the chosen chair, I can only hope I'm doing a good job
facilitating, bringing people together, and most importantly, setting a
good example, but in no scenario am I the focus -- the work we do globally
is the focus, and many people deserve credit for making this a reality. The
efforts invested in the group are yet another testament to the actual need
and to the fact that many people in the movement, especially volunteers,
see the value of its existence. *
Great.

** While our User Group has been officially recognized only in October
2018, we have been around for quite some time now. The application process
to AffCom took over a year (which is outrageous in itself, but besides the
point here), and was a result of a work done by a group called the Wiki
Education Collaborative (which has been around since 2014, and that has
since dissolved in order to set up the UG). So you see, we have actually
been very consistent in our work and lived through the many (many!) changes
in the WMF Education team. I, personally, have been doing EDUWiki work
since 2011, before the Collab, as did many of our members. This is why I
believe that your concerns of **“sustainability”** should be directed
elsewhere.*

Thanks for the information regarding the history. I had forgotten about the
Collab. I’m glad to hear that the UG has a longer history than I originally
guessed, because this implies to me that the organization has already
demonstrated durability and may be more sustainable than I was first
thinking.

** The WMF EDU team consists of 3-4 people. No matter how good they are,
they cannot, simply cannot, attend to the needs of the whole EDUWiki
community. In fact, they never did. The Education activity in our movement
is simply too vast for such a small team to handle, especially considering
their very limited resources (which is not their entire fault, but **that’s**
the way it is for now). This is why they have always joined forced with
local affiliates, later with the Collab, and now with our User Group. We
keep our fingers crossed for Nichole and hope she will be able to build a
more sustainable team. We also hope that the work she & Ben are doing
inside the WMF universe, will yield some fruits and will help Education get
the place it deserves in our movement, in terms of acknowledgement of
contribution and resource allocation.*

I was aware of the work that the affiliates were doing, including affiliate
staff, and my impression is that a large part of the work of the WMF
education staff is to support the affiliates. However, I lack a clear
understanding of which education program tasks in the Wikiverse are being
done by the WMF Education Program staff, which are being done by affiliates
including affiliate staff, and which are being done by the user group. Is
there a page somewhere that describes the relationships among these groups?

** The UG is instrumental in giving a voice to the people on the ground,
especially the volunteers around the world. Having a voice is key to
achieving our global goals and attending to our international needs. It is
also needed as sometimes that WMF has its own agenda and goals, and they
could be different from what the community wants and needs. This is one of
the main reasons we created the UG in the first place. But again -- we do
not work in an isolated way; rather, this is an ecosystem, of WMF, UG,
Chapters and stakeholders outside of our movement. We are aiming to be a
force that strengthens these ties and helps this network evolve, within and
outside our movement. So it really **isn’t** about me or the work that I
personally do; **it’s** about the community and about joining forces, which
is why it is a sustainable model of operation and also why I said there are
many people that are making this happen. If it was just me, I would be
failing my role as a leader, as I perceive it.*

OK, this makes sense to me. One of my concerns about groups in general,
such as highly organized Wikiproject groups and affiliate user groups, is
that they can pile a disproportionate share of work onto one person or a
small number of people, in which case there is reason to consider questions
regarding sustainability.

** Yes, **I’m** currently

:) OK, it sounds like the group is happy with how things are going.

I think that, for long term endeavors like setting up a new organization
which may be active over a time range of months to decades. thinking about
sustainability is a good idea. I intended the questions to be benevolent
and not hostile. I hope that this makes sense.

Re: [Wikimedia Education] EDUWiki UG: wrapping 2018 and looking forward to 2019!

2019-01-29 Thread Pine W
Hi Filip,

Previously WMF seemed to have a larger scope of work in supporting
educators in institutions. I think that some of that stopped when a few WMF
staff members left. I think that at least some of that staffing has been
restored. However, I don't want WMF to use a staffing shortage as a reason
to permanently offload more administrative and support responsibilities
onto volunteers. If volunteers are contributing in ways that they like,
that's fine and good, but I don't want volunteers to feel that it's their
obligation to fill WMF's capacity gaps with their personal unpaid time,
especially not on a long term basis. WMF's job is support the community,
not the other way around. However, if the people in the user group like how
things are going and feel that their time is being used well in a
sustainable and respectful way, then I'm glad to hear that, and I wish you
the best in your activities.

I'm sorry if anything in my second paragraph seemed offensive. I'm confused
regarding how what I wrote was offensive. I thought that I was expressing
concern about the sustainability of a person's activity level and the
sustainability of the groups in which they are involved, which I thought
would have been well received. Can you specify what you found to be
offensive? I'm happy to discuss that off list or on one of my user talk
pages if you prefer. I am not perfect and I hope that I am always willing
to learn how to do better.

Re: [Wikimedia Education] EDUWiki UG: wrapping 2018 and looking forward to 2019!

2019-01-29 Thread Pine W
Hi Shani,

Thanks for sharing these updates.

It sounds like there is a lot of effort being spent on organizing the
EduWiki group. Thanks for the amount of tiime that you are putting into
this.

I have two questions.

Facilitating meetings of Wikimedia educators, working on tools, asking for
feedback, etc. are all tasks that have been previously done by WMF staff.
How is the EduWiki user group adding value? I am concerned about how much
time and effort has been spent by non-WMF people, many of whom I am
guessing are participating unpaid, when I don't understand the benefits and
when I think that WMF staff were previously doing much of the organization
and support work so that voluneers and affiliates didn't need to spend
their valuable and limited time on these activities.

Another question that I have is about sustainability. You seem to be
filling many roles in multiple organizations, and I am concerned about what
would happen if you burned out, got into a conflict and decided to leave,
or had some other need to withdraw. Is your workload sustainable, and do
you each of the groups that you lead including the Education groups have
sufficient human resources capacity to replace you if you left or became
unavailable? I admire your level of effort, but having one person lead so
many groups, especially on volunteer time, seems to be risky both for your
sustainability as a leader and for the sustainability of the groups. I
personally had a bad experience trying simultaneously to sustain a user
group and to do paid work and to keep up with the regular outbreaks of
problems around the Wikiverse. After that bad experience I am trying to do
fewer simultaneous activities so that I am under less stress and am
participating in a more sustainable way, and I encourage you to consider
whether your level of activity is sustainable and whether your many groups
are sustainable if you are no longer involved. I will understand if you
don't want to respond to this concern in public, but I encourage you and
the groups that you lead to consider how sustainable your leadership is and
to do succession planning.

Best wishes,

Pine

Hi folks,

The open call for Project Grants is officially underway! As you prepare
your proposals this month, please keep in mind that the final deadline is
November 30th, and that this will be only the only open call for Project
Grants during this fiscal year, which ends on June 30th, 2019. To learn
more about this grant program and how to prepare an application, please
visit our landing page on Meta. <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project>

In addition to the resources mentioned in the prior announcement, we have
scheduled some proposal clinics where applicants will be able to discuss
their proposals or ask questions with Wikimedia Foundation staff using
Google Meet or using IRC. Some of these will be themed toward specific
topics (such as proposals involving a GLAM-related project), and others
will be more general. For a list of scheduled proposal clinics, please
review the Project Grants landing page on Meta. <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project#Upcoming_events>. Additional
clinics may be added throughout the month.

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Programs & Events Dashboard Admins selection process

2018-09-12 Thread Pine W
Hi Vahid,

Thanks for this email. However, I have two concerns

1. Can a term other than "dashboard admin" be used to describe this role?
The term "admin" has other uses already, and I am concerned about the
potential for confusion, including among people who are communicating in
English as a second language. Also, with the NDA requirement this position
sounds more like a functionary role than an admin role, which I think is
another reason for using a term other than "dashboard admin". Perhaps
"dashboard functionary" or "dashboard technical support specialist" would
be clearer. What do you think?

2. I am also concerned about adding yet more work to the already
significant load that is being carried by volunteers. Given that WMF has
ample financial resources to address an incremental increase in support
needs, I think that WMF should be capable of handling support requests and
generating reports for the Dashboard without asking volunteers to increase
the already considerable scope of our work.

Thank you,

We all know that Wikisource is one of the trending Wikimedia projects. We
are getting many new editors and new books to Indic language Wikisource's.
At the same time, we even noticed that there are many problems faced by the
new editors and a few of the existing editors. To help all of the editors
we have created a Handbook titled as *Wikisource Handbook for Indic

*Which is now available[1] to everyone to make the best use of it. I

Hi Felix,

I think that Wikimedia Armenia has a middle school program, and that
Wikimedia Israel was considering developing a middle school program, so you
might consider reaching out to them individually if you don't hear back
from them on this list.

Good luck,

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Evaluation report on Wikipedia Fellows pilot

2018-05-25 Thread Pine W
Thanks for the comments, LiAnna.

An issue that someone mentioned to me is that many academics choose not to
edit Wikipedia articles because editing Wikipedia is far less beneficial to
their careers than publishing academic articles and books. There may be
some benefit to academics from having their articles and books cited in
Wikipedia, but that is different from editing Wikipedia unless they add
their own articles and books as citations or have someone else do that on
their behalf (which I would discourage them from doing directly, although
recommending relevant articles and books on talk pages and disclosing any
potential COI could still be a net benefit so that other editors can
evaluate their recommendations). I am curious about how you were so
successful in recruiting academics to volunteer for this program. Can you
comment on that? It would be nice if academics and universities are
starting to feel that contributing to Wikipedia is valuable for academic
careers and/or as public service that they wish to encourage.

On a related subject, I will mention that to my surprise, some universities
now award scholarships to undergraduate applicants for e-sports. One would
think that extensively contributing constructively to Wikipedia, whether by
applicants for admission or by academics, would be viewed much more
positively by universities than participating in e-sports, but to my
knowledge no universities have made such a decision. If you know of any
change in academia about the value of editing Wikipedia articles by
applicants for undergraduate or graduate admission, I would also be
interested in hearing about that. Perhaps admissions policies are a
potential area in which the Wiki Education Foundation could lobby
universities to make changes. I realize that this is a tangent from the
subject of encouraging academics to contribute content themselves, but I
thought that I would mention this as a related topic of interest.

Thanks,

2018-05-24 Thread Pine W
As I wrote in my previous email, I get the impression that this program was
relatively expensive compared to the number of content contributors (who in
this case are academics). I am keeping in mind that this was a pilot, and that
initial planning and the first iteration for many programs like this require
some one-time expenses and some debugging. My guess is that for future rounds
WikiEd can make the program be more efficient, and that this will be a work in
progress.
This program is not without financial costs, both for the pilot and for future
rounds. I return to the questions that I asked LiAnna in my previous email: who
funded WikiEd's expenses for this project, and what thoughts does WikiEd have
regarding how the project can be scaled up in a way that is more efficient in
terms of cost per participant?
I am hoping that WikiEd has a reliable funding source for the next round, and
that WikiEd is currently planning how to increase the cost-effectiveness.
Stepping back to consider the larger problem of too few knowledgable volunteers
supporting too many novices throughout the wikiverse, I get the impression that
WMF is spending increasing amounts of money on training and one-on-one help for
technical and content contributors, both by directly funding WMF employees and
by providing funds to grantees. I anticipate that the trend will continue, and
I am anxious to see it be effective in increasing content contributor
longevity, content quality, content quantity, diversity of contributors, and
measues of community health. I am glad to see WikiEd working in this domain
with academics, and I would like for this program to be successful, financially
sustainable, and cost-effective in the medium to long term.

Hi LiAnna,

Thank you for this report. Increasing the number of good-faith contributors to
Wikipedia is always nice to see. I believe that at least a few people in WMF,
the affiliates, and the long-term volunteer population have been interested for
many years in increasing the number of academics who contribute to Wikipedia.

The program sounds like it was relatively labor intensive on the part of
WikiEd, and the number of academic participants was small. Who funded WikiEd's
expenses for this project, and what thoughts does WikiEd have regarding how the
project can be scaled up in a way that is more efficient in terms of cost per
participant?

I would like to see this project scale up, but I am concerned about its
cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability.

As you probably know, I am continuing my development of training materials,
primarily videos, for new Wikimedians, although the audience that I have in
mind is more typical of ENWP's volunteer population instead of being focused on
the specific interests and mindsets of academic contributors.

report on Wikipedia Fellows pilot
Greetings, all!

At the beginning of 2018, the Wiki Education Foundation ran a 3-month pilot
to engage academic experts (mostly professors at universities in the U.S.)
to improve English Wikipedia articles related to their areas of expertise.
We're pretty happy with how the pilot turned out -- we had some great
improvements to articles, and, more importantly for a pilot, we learned a
*lot* about how to run a program like this successfully.

The team that worked on it put together this extensive evaluation report on
what we did, what we learned, and what the outcomes were from the pilot:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Education_Foundation/Wikipedia_Fellows_pilot_evaluation

I also put together a short blog post about it:
https://wikiedu.org/blog/2018/05/22/wiki-education-publishes-evaluation-of-fellows-pilot/

We already have calls for applications out for additional cohorts to begin
in June, and we're eager to learn even more from future iterations of the
Wikipedia Fellows program. I hope sharing our learnings like this can be
helpful for other education programs in the Wikimedia movement who might
also be interested in engaging subject matter experts to edit.

We're happy to answer questions on this list or on the talk page of the
evaluation report on Meta.

[Wikimedia Education] Fwd: Upcoming survey about training for Wikimedians

Hello Wikimedia colleagues,

Some of you may remember the LearnWiki project [0]. Regrettably, the
project goals were not completed within the planned timeline and budget. If
you would like to read that grant's final report, you may find it here [1].

I continue to believe that there would be value in offering more online
training to Wikimedians through videos, and possibly interactive tutorials
and other resources, that could help Wikimedians with novice to
intermediate skill levels to improve their proficiency with navigating
Wikimedia online cultures, principles, referencing, VisualEditor, the 2017
New WikiText Editor (which I like to call "NEWT") [2], and other topics.

Currently, there is a variety of training throughout the Wikimedia
ecosystem. Training varies across projects (e.g. Wikipedia, Wikidata,
Commons), languages (e.g. English, Arabic, Japanese), settings (e.g. GLAM
workshops, university classes, online individual study), formats (e.g. in
person, remote, video, interactive tutorial, lecture), and themes (e.g.
Wiki Loves Monuments, Women in Red, WikiProject Military History).

I plan to create and distribute a survey during the next few months to ask
individual Wikimedians and Wikimedia affiliate organizations about the
training practices that you have used to train yourself or others, how
effective you think that those training practices are, and what types of
training you would like to have available in the future. This survey would
inform the development of training materials and methods.

Improving the quality and diversity of training is a long term goal of
mine. This campaign is currently not funded by the Wikimedia Foundation or
any Wikimedia affiliate, although I believe that the survey data will
provide valuable input for possible projects, and people may request
funding for some of those projects (whether or not they are collaborating
with me). I do not plan to request WMF funds for myself in the foreseeable
future, but I may request funding for other contractors or grantees for
some projects that are related to this campaign and who collaborate with
me. While I work on this initiative, I anticipate that numerous Wikimedia
affiliates and program leaders will continue to develop and refine a
variety of training materials, some of which will be funded by WMF,
affiliates, and/or other organizations. I hope to collaborate with others,
incrementally and over the course of years, to improve the quality and
diversity of training throughout the Wikimedia ecosystem.

I believe that WMF is planning to launch the 2018 Community Engagement
Insights survey in March, and to publish results in May. [3] The CEI survey
results from 2017 and 2018 are likely to influence plans for development of
training materials, although the survey that is focused on training will be
separate from the 2018 CEI survey. I plan to collaborate with WMF Community
Resources and WMF Learning and Evaluation *if* they have availability and
willingness to participate in the design and analysis of the training
survey. :)

Further updates about the training survey will be provided during the next
few months. In the meantime, you are welcome to contact me with questions
or comments through email, IRC, or on my Meta talk page, especially if you
would like to help with the design of the survey.

Regards,

Pine

Each year the Wikipedia Library team, in collaboration with GLAM folks
(Galleries, Libraries, Archives & Museums) all around the world, asks a
simple favor: Give Wikipedia the gift of a citation for its birthday.

Website:
http://1lib1ref.org

This year Wikipedia turns 17 and it's our third annual #1Lib1Ref campaign.
The 20-day campaign is now in its second week... What's happened so far?

Across the languages we are tracking, editors have added 2097 citations in
21+ languages.

5 languages have made over 100 edits: English, French, Hebrew, Serbian and
Catalan.

View contributions by language:
https://twitter.com/WikiLibrary/status/955590632545726464

On social media #1Lib1Ref is a hype-machine. 37 countries have made 2260
Twitter posts reaching 4.4 million potential readers 8.1 million times.

We invited librarians (and library-lovers) around the world to participate.
Our
Wikimedia Blog post, written by #1Lib1Ref originator and GLAM Strategist
Alex Stinson, set the tone and made the case:

Read blog:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2018/01/16/1lib1ref-2018/

The blog included a visual 'explainer' video created by Wikipedia Library
team member Felix Nartey, narrated by famous U.S. Librarian Jessamyn West.

We promoted the Story of #1lib1ref on social media using an 8-part
TweetStorm:

Also we redesigned a simple new graphic and logo for the campaign:

View Graphic:

Each year #1Lib1Ref grows and brings in more people from libraries, and
more people who believe that Wikipedia and librarians share a mission which
benefits from collaboration. It's an exciting part of our work and we're
very thankful to everyone who adds to its impact and success!

Join in. Make an edit. Teach someone how to add a citation. Share something
nice about the campaign this week in your social media circles. Help share
free knowledge. #1Lib1Ref. Pass it on...

Hi all,

I wanted to pass along an opportunity that I saw earlier today via Twitter:
https://medium.com/read-write-participate/work-in-the-open-
with-mozilla-1410be0a83b2

It sets up people working on "open projects that support a healthy
Internet" with a mentor, a cohort of like-minded people from all over the
world, and a trip to Mozfest, which is a London-based open Internet
conference I've attended/presented at in past years and found really
mind-expanding due to the cross-disciplinary conversations that take place.

You can see previous projects here: https://mozilla.github.
io/leadership-training/round-3/projects/ — it looks like there's quite a
broad cross-section and many of the projects across the movement might be
applicable. The post notes participants will learn about "best practices
for project setup and communication, tools for collaboration, community
building, and running events."

Thank you to Leila for suggesting I pass this along to this listserv. Feel
free to share it broadly.

Dear Wikimedians,

Three months ago, we welcomed many of you in Berlin to work, discuss and

In the interest of not continuing to spam the list as well as getting on

Dear Colleagues:

My most recent blog posts comprise a two-part article entitled “Wikipedia’s
Ways of Knowing.” I outline two contrasting ways of organizing and
accessing knowledge—“rhizomatic” and “arborescent”—and explain how they
relate to Wikipedia. In the process, I also deal with Portals and
Categories, two powerful Wikipedia concepts.

[Wikimedia Education] Blog post: "The Role of Librarians in Wikidata and WikiCite"

Forwarding from the Wikidata Weekly Summary:

https://ndsrbhl.wordpress.com/2017/06/06/the-role-of-librarians-in-wikidata-and-wikicite/

Quoting from the blog post: "As WikiCite continues to grow, it will be
interesting to follow how (hopefully not whether!) the community integrates
GLAM metadata. Generating Linked Open Data citations has the potential to
connect objects and concepts with information resources to create context
for more accurate and interesting digital representations of knowledge and
cultural heritage. And more complete and complex graphs are better at
supporting deeper investigations, queries, and visualizations of these data
across repositories, collections, and knowledge bases."

Hello, as you may or may not already know there will be a datacentre
switch back to Eqiad, WMF's main data centre, on May 3rd at approximately
14:00 UTC. For approximately 20-30 minutes you will NOT be able to save
edits to any WMF project. If you have any questions feel free to reply back
to this email, or ask on IRC on freenode channel #wikimedia-tech. If there
any major issues that occur during this time please report them to

[Wikimedia Education] Reliability in the era of alternative facts and information warfare

2017-04-01 Thread Pine W
I imagine that this subject will be of interest and concern to educators,
including those who teach in the Wikipedia in Education Program. Here is a
thought-provoking newspaper column about a University of Washington
professor's troubling findings: http://www.seattletimes.com/
seattle-news/politics/uw-professor-the-information-war-
is-real-and-were-losing-it/

Quoting briefly from the article:

"Starbird is publishing her paper as a sort of warning. The information
networks we’ve built are almost perfectly designed to exploit psychological
vulnerabilities to rumor."

"Your brain tells you ‘Hey, I got this from three different sources,’ ” she
says. “But you don’t realize it all traces back to the same place, and
might have even reached you via bots posing as real people. If we think of
this as a virus, I wouldn’t know how to vaccinate for it.”

[Wikimedia Education] Outreach to Native Americans

Hi US Wikimedians, GLAM specislists, and educators,

One of our interests in Cascadia is increasing the amount of Native
American content on Wikimedia. Do any other groups have experience
collaborating with Native American tribes, cultural organizations such as
GLAMs that focus on Native American content, or educators that teach Native
American languages, history, or culture?

Thanks everyone, this is good to know. The attention to WikiSource is
interesting and more than I anticipated. My guess is that we all have room
to grow our activities on WikiVoyage and other projects as well.

Those of us who meet at WikiConference North America in October might have
a chance to discuss these issues in person. The conference website is
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2016/Main_Page. The conference organizers
are working on many tasks at the moment. Hopefully session submissions will
be open within the next few weeks. The current plan is to have conference
sessions in both Spanish and English. If you're interested in coming to the
conference, please mark October 7–10 on your calendars.

I just finished submitting two ideas that I'd like to advise.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Automated_good-faith_newcomer_detection
Build and deploy a machine learning model for flagging newcomers who are
editing in good-faith. This has the potential to mitigate some of the
secondary, demotivational effects when good-faith newcomers' work passes
through curation/review processes.

Concerns about the introduction of spam into Wikipedia has lead Wikipedians
towards implementing high speed new article review/curation processes. The
speed at which editors tag articles for deletion via these processes is
great for dealing with spam, but it might also be faster that good-faith
new article creators can build their articles. We could build a machine
learning classifier that is tuned to detect spammy article drafts. This
would allow the new pages queue to be split into a high-speed spammy
article review, and a low-speed article review that allows creators time to
make a better first draft.

I'll submit some more when I can. :)

Re: [Wikimedia Education] [Wikitech-l] Fwd: February 2016 Lightning Talks

2016-02-15 Thread Pine W
Reminder that these lightning talks are happening tomorrow, Tuesday
February 16, at 1900 UTC / 11:00 AM Pacific. Because there are 3 presenters
and a 1-hour block of time, each presenter has about 15 minutes including
time for questions. We might finish early.

On the agenda:

* Pine: "LearnWIki" Instructional video series on Wikipedia mechanics
(Including VE and citoid) and community practices
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Motivational_and_educational_video_to_introduce_Wikimedia/January_message_to_village_pumps>

* Madhu Viswanathan: "Counting unique devices accessing Wikipedia projects
using Last access method"

* Rosemary Rein: "Program Capacity and Learning-Building a Roadmap Together"
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Program_Capacity_and_Learning_Roadmap_-_Office_Hours_Feb_16.pdf>

Hope to see you there!

[Wikimedia Education] Wikimedia participation from middle schoolers and boy scouts

2016-02-07 Thread Pine W
Hi Education folks,

I recently met a U.S. Boy Scout leader here in the U.S. I believe that I
heard that a boy scout one earned a merit badge by way of Wikipedia
contributions, so I mentioned this to the scout leader and encouraged him
to follow up with me about the possibility of scouts creating or editing
content on Wikipedia (and possibly Commons). Boy scouts are typically in
grades 6 through 12, and are normally to ages 12 to 17. I am wondering if
anyone has had experience with introducing Wikimedia in the middle school
age group, because it sounds like this scout leader has scouts in his unit
that are of that age. I am thinking that there might be an opportunity here
to get at least one group of scouts involved with creating or editing
Wikimedia content that is related to their scouting interests. For example,
it might be nice if they would take photos of their outdoor activities and
upload them to Commons, or write about wilderness skills and environmental
conservation activities.

Thanks,

Pine

2016-02-02 Thread Pine W
Boldly forwarding* in case others would like to view or present a lightning
talk. I plan to give a lightning talk about the video series

which I'm in the process of producing with the support of an individual
engagement grant.

Although these talks can be about technical topics like video formats, I
think that there are education and GLAM activities that could fit under the
umbrella as well, especially if they have technical or research aspects.
For example, I'll probably focus much of my presentation on my background
research and project design process.

Hope to see you there!

To: Research into Wikimedia content and communities <
wiki-researc...@lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikimedia developers <
wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org>, wikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org, "A
mailing list for the Analytics Team at WMF and everybody who has an
interest in Wikipedia and analytics."

Hey all,

I’m glad to announce that the Wikimedia Research team’s goals

for
the next quarter (January - March 2016) are up on wiki.

The Research and Data
 team
will continue to work with our volunteers and collaborators on revision
scoring as a service adding
support for 5 new languages and prototyping new models (including an edit
type classifier
).
We will also continue to iterate on the design of article creation
recommendations
,
running a dedicated campaign in coordination with existing editathons to
improve the quality of these recommendations. Finally, we will extend a
research project we started in November aimed at understanding the behavior
of Wikipedia readers

, by combining qualitative survey data with behavioral analysis from our
HTTP request logs.

The Design Research
 team
will conduct an in-depth study of user needs (particularly readers) on the
ground in February. We will continue to work with other Wikimedia
Engineering teams throughout the quarter to ensure the adoption of
human-centered design principles and pragmatic personas
 in our
product development cycle. We’re also excited to start a collaboration

with
students at the University of Washington to understand what free online
information resources (including, but not limited to, Wikimedia projects)
students use.

I am also glad to report that two papers on link and article
recommendations (the result of a formal collaboration with a team at
Stanford) were accepted for presentation at WSDM '16 and WWW ’16 (preprints
will be made available shortly). An overview on revision scoring as a
service
 was
published a few weeks ago on the Wikimedia blog, and got some good media
coverage

.

We're constantly looking for contributors and as usual we welcome feedback
on these projects via the corresponding talk pages on Meta. You can contact
us for any question on IRC via the #wikimedia-research channel and follow
@WikiResearch on Twitter for the latest
Wikipedia and Wikimedia research updates hot off the press.

Wishing you all happy holidays,

Dario and Abbey on behalf of the team

You might also try contacting the GLAM, Commons, Multimedia, and/or Labs

That is a good point, Revi. And this is the kind of mess that makes me
discouraged sometimes. But I think that James' involvement will be helpful
here, as will a possible migration plan to a maintained tool.

(I've noticed a pattern recently of a few people separately deciding that
they're not going to maintain certain tools or projects any longer. This
maintainability problem really needs to be addressed, and is something that
I'm hoping a CTO or VPE would address head-on.)

Volunteering to help coordinate translation still counts as volunteering.
:) You can note that you might or might not personally do the translation,
but will try to recruit when the time comes (likely in the first quarter of
2016).

Subject: Upcoming press release to celebrate 5 million articles on English
Wikipedia

Dear colleagues,

Aligned with discussions at the Wikimedia Conference about coordinating
press releases around the world, I would like to invite you to participate
in the drafting and upcoming publication of a community-written press
release that celebrates English Wikipedia's milestone of 5 million
articles. I particularly extend this invitation to affiliates which are
located in areas where English (in any dialect) is a primary, official, or
common language.

Drafting and discussion are happening here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28miscellaneous%29#5_millionth_article_celebration:_community_press_release.2C_video.2C_open_letter.2C_and_site_banner

Please ask your affiliates to participate in a near-simultaneous press
release from interested affiliates and WMF on the day that English
Wikipedia reaches 5 million articles.

Please make sure that your affiliate's contact information is current on
Meta so that it can be included in the press release. Journalists may wish
to speak with representatives of your organization about the press release
and about Wikipedia in general.

This event offers and opportunity to raise public awareness of Wikipedia in
general and our many accomplishments, as well as the many challenges and
opportunities ahead of us to make English Wikipedia in particular be more
accurate, friendly, inclusive, accessible, reputable, and comprehensive.

Regards,

Pine

Hi James,

I think that I understand your proposal better now. Thanks.

Rather than involving Lila at this stage, I would like to suggest that you
talk directly to the Wiki Ed Foundation if you haven't already. Please do
let me know how they respond. Good-faith paid editing is a subject that
seems to be bubbling up in a number of places recently.

model was originally going to be to crowdsourced, but now that I have
relatively more money than time, I am probably going to pay for the
bot development work out of pocket myself, but still plan to set up
something along the lines of http://imgur.com/a/Pp2zr to pay for the
fact checkers. The WikiEd Foundation has an interest in making sure
that their students' work is not degrading the accuracy of the
encyclopedia, and this provides them an easy way to do so.

As for your final question, why should Lila not be involved in this
discussion? Weren't you just a few days ago saying that the annual
plan comment period should be longer and more inclusive? But I guess
the best answer is that, if the WikiEd Foundation isn't interested in
general accuracy review for work other than by their students, then a
second spin-off foundation is probably going to be necessary.

Message from Jo McEntyre:

We are organising a Wikipedia-Europe PMC hackathon on 4th Sept on the
genome campus, around the Wikipedia Science conference
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Wikipedia_Science_Conference.

With Daniel Mietchen, the three themes we have identified are:
- contributing datasets e.g. data citations, text-mined entities from
Europe PMC to Wikidata possibly seeing this pushed through to some
Wikipedia pages
- import of full text articles into Wikisource and potential
highlighting named entities
- pushing PMID-PMCID-DOI mapping to Wikidata/Wikipedia

We would very much like you to attend!

Re: [Wikimedia Education] comments on Annual Plan

2015-06-04 Thread Pine W
Hi James,

I understand that WMF can't do much content work without risking its DCMA
safe harbor, and I understand that fact checking even if paid might be a
net benefit to the project. But I'm not sure how that relates to the
Education mailing list, what funding model you are proposing for this work,
why the Wiki Ed Foundation would want to include this kind of fact checking
within its scope of work even if the funding was readily available, and why
Lila would be involved in this discussion. Can you clarify those points?

Thanks,

Pine

because that is easier to do, and a video version second.

 * The UW librarians are interested in continuing to partner with us. More
info about that during the next few weeks.

 * We received feedback from WMF about the current version of our proposed
annual plan on Meta. At this point, WMF is willing to fund portions but not
all of our plan. Our Board is in the process of scheduling a meeting to
 discuss our next steps.

 * You may remember that Monika mentioned on this list (

her grant proposal for an Inspire campaign project Full Circle Gap

 this project. Congratulations, Monika. (:

 * We will have our regular social meetup at Cafe Allegro on May 26th this
month, later than usual. At this meetup, I plan to share what I learned at
the Wikimedia Conference and any potential new partnerships or initiatives.
We can also discuss our plans for the remainder of this year, including
potential future events at the UW libraries. I hope to see many of you on

Thanks for reviving this topic, it's an important one to people all around

actively every day, and that means that any written instruction would very
soon become outdated. That doesn't sound like the best time spent for
anyone to me, even while I completely understand the need. We would be more
than happy to work on something like that once VE is in a more ready state
when we will know little more will change. Once we get to that point, we
would love to have community involvement in it, so that we can make sure it
answers the main questions people have who are using it.

So, to be continued! If anyone has already elaborated something that can

how they *ought* to use it. It would be great to demonstrate the
basics of what is expected of a Wikipedia article, using VE. This is
somewhat analogous to the approach we took with VE in the Editing
Wikipedia brochure: the center spread is about edting with
VisualEditor and wikitext, but the VisualEditor side of it is all
about the structure of a Wikipedia article. Showing a tightly edited
demonstration of someone starting a well-structured sandbox article
from scratch in VE, and explaining why they are using all the
formmatting tools they use along the way — from bolding the title to
section headers to wikilinks to citations to adding images to external
links in a 'see also' section — that would be ideal.

It's probably not something Wiki Education Foundation would tackle any
 time soon, though.

Similarly, it would nice to have some guided tours that walk through
the basics of VE usage, similar to the wikitext ones in the current
training. I *might* find time to squeeze that in at some point in the
 next few months.

We're tenatively planning to redo the WP:STUDENT training as part of
the Dashboard/Course Page system we're building, so that it would have
knowledge checks along the way and probably send users over to
Wikipedia to go through sandbox guided tours to practice the basics.
But that won't happen until (probably) late 2015.

I am very happy to see such strong interest in VE from the education
communitty.

FYI, if we don't hear back about a lesson plan for VE training in the next
few days, either in Hebrew or English, I will contact our colleague Michal
who is the executive director of WMIL to see if she can provide us with at
least a Hebrew version that we can use for inspration.

I still do not use VE in my training (despite having 200+ students
working on three campuses) because there are too many things it cannot do.
I dont have time to constantly play with it to see if it is now good enough
to use. I will likely not use it until it is accepted by the wider
community. However, the lack of a viable VE does make scalability very very
difficult, especially with older teachers who adjust less to idea of coding
 in any form.

+1 on the frustrations for those with new accounts. I understand the need
for protections with new accounts, but why in the heck does the captcha
error message appear at the top and the captcha itself at the bottom?
Students only see the red error and I have to tell them to go to the
bottom and its only a captcha. In addition, because we use wireless with
the same IP address, we get errors when I am having a class move text into
sandboxes or copy/paste finished articles into the mainspace. Most students
cant use the move function as they dont have enough errors. Even if they
did, using it would render the sandbox worthless because of the redirect.
Add to this trigger-happy bibliotecarios in es.wiki who erase student work
with little or no explanation, the last two times being wrongly done.

The projects want useful content, and how people write for Wikipedia

And the way the WMF releases software makes life very hard for trainers.

It is literally true that you need to check the night before giving a

I believe the latest WMUK training leaflet takes the VE as a given. I
know their older leaflet on images mentions it, in a way found confusing to

Hi

A number of my students are currently translating technical articles from
English to Spanish and we have run into a problem

Es.wiki does not recognize the database reference templates such as cite
pmid and cite doi. A student who knows something about computers looked
into it a bit and told me that the reason is that those templates function
with a bot that scrapes the reference information from the database.
However, it only functions in en.wiki. We either need a bot for es.wiki or
the en.wiki bot needs to be modified to be able to send the scraped info to
other languages. This student tells me he does not know how to do either.

In two weeks we have a major editathon, with a large chunk of the
student/participants working on translations, preferably articles relating
to their majors. We are talking 250+ students on three campuses.

Right now, we get around this problem by using the cita publicación
template in es.wiki but of course it would make life a lot easier if we
dont have to teach dozens of students or more how to do this.

Can anyone help?

 Happy New Year everyone! :)

We are planning Indic Language Wikipedia workshops in U.S.
Please go through Project Link :

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Indic_Language_Wikipedia_Outreach_in_United_States

Project idea What is the problem you're trying to solve?

Indic languages represent a large portion of languages used worldwide.
The number of contributors for Indic languages has been lagging other
language families for a variety of reasons. Internet connectivity in India
being limited/expensive is a major reason among them. Indic wikiprojects
have beens working to encourage more contributors for Indic Languages.

There are a number of areas on Indic wikipedias where content is either
lacking or is of poor quality. Health-related content is a prime example of
 this.
 Potential for solution

There is a strong and diverse Indian diaspora in the United States.
Eastern Seaboard has a large number of Indian expats that have either
settled there or live there for work/business. This was evidenced by the
20,000+ people attending a speech in Hindi by the Prime Minister of India
at Madison Square Garden, New York.

In general, the Indian origin community in the United States has very
high literacy rates. They are also well-versed in English as well as at
least one of Indic languages. Access to Internet is not an issue for this
demographic. Enthusiasm for advancement of Indic languages is also evident
by the many initiatives being pursued by this group.
 What is your solution?

1. Dedicated workshops for Indian Languages in United States of
America.
2. Informal User Group to conduct periodic meetings/offline events.
3. Collaboration with local chapters and editors to improve Offline
Wikipedia in Indian Languages.
4. Special content (health related articles/essential medicines info
etc) on Indic Wikipedia can be improved by specialized dedicated group of
Indian medical students in U.S.
5. Collaboration with (U.S based) like minded individuals and
organizations dedicated to improve Open Knowledge movement in India.

modified version of the March 2014 photo of the Grantmaking Department

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Overcoming a roadblock to engagement

2014-07-10 Thread Pine W
In general:

1. Citing your own academic work and/or adding an article on Wikipedia
about your work would be to introduce original research AND potentially
COI, and both of those are not ok. You could propose an edit on an article
talk page with an explanation that you are the researcher.

2. Editing an article about yourself would be COI. You could propose an
edit on the article talk page with the explanation that you are the subject
of the article.

3. Encouraging your students to add your or their research on Wikipedia
would be meatpuppetry, original research, and/or potentially COI, and any
of those is not OK.

4. Encouraging your students to edit your biography on Wikipedia would be
meatpuppetry and potentially COI, and both of those are not OK. A professor
did this in the past and was caught.

When in doubt, I recommend writing on an article talk page, explaining your
relationship to the content that you are proposing to add, and writing a
draft of your proposed change for other editors to review.

I need some help. Can you tell me, in the Wikipedia API, is there a
way to count the contributions that a user has made on behalf of another
particular user? For example, a professor might ask a group of PhD students
to make contributions involving his/her research on various Wikipedia
 pages, on his/her behalf.

I have been frequently told (at the Teahouse and elsewhere) that
Professors are not allowed to contribute information about their own
published research papers on Wikipedia pages, because this would be biased.
(Which is rather a downer for the professor, because this means they are
forbidden to write about the things they are most passionate and
 knowledgeable about.)

If this is rule is true, then it must certainly be seen as a roadblock
to academic engagement with Wikipedia. If it isn't, then it is editors'
perception of the rule as true (as I have experienced) that is the
 roadblock.

It seems to me that the way to overcome this roadblock is to introduce
a way of counting the contributions made by a person (say, a research
student, or a colleague) on behalf of a Professor. So at the end of the
year, the Professor can say 'my research contributed to X edits on
Wikipedia' as easily as each individual student (who might contribute on
behalf of many academic researchers) can count their individual edits.

Can the API accommodate this in some way? Perhaps through some sort of
 'project' code or something?

the education program. I'd like to interview the following people:

1. A leader of the Wikipedia Education program in Serbia

6. Someone at the Wiki Ed Foundation

If you're in one of these groups, you speak English at at least the EN-2
level, and you're willing to be interviewed or know who a good person to
interview would be, please email me off-list. Interviews will probably take
place in late June or sometime in July, and hopefully be no more than half
an hour each. The goal is to get a broad survey of Wikipedia's use in
education in this Signpost article. The article will probably be published

Michal Lester, Executive Director of Wikimedia Israel, regarding a shared
cooperation with Wikimedia Israel in the framework of the ministry’s school
curricula in the coming years. Through the planned cooperation, history,
geography and science teachers will receive special professional training
to instruct students on how to contribute to new or incomplete Wikipedia
articles for which information is lacking or inadequate.

The Education Ministry will also examine the possibility of integrating
Wikipedia writing assignments in the teaching of research and community
involvement. They will also consider having students who speak additional
languages (primarily English and Russian) write Wikipedia articles about
Israel in those particular languages.

Education Minister Rabbi Shai Piron said, “It is important to us that the
education system in Israel leads in innovation and cooperating with
Wikipedia is a wonderful opportunity to think outside the box and enable
students in Israel to do things that make a difference from which others
can also benefit.”

Jan-Bart de Vreede, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
said, “Israel is today among the leading countries in the integration of
Wikipedia in the education system and academia. I hope our joint work model
will also serve as an example to other education systems around the world.”

In the framework of cooperation that is already in place between Wikimedia
Israel and the Ministry of education, several pilot projects are being
conducted. The projects involve teacher training in good Wikipedia usage,
article composition, Wikipedia article writing by gifted high school
students and the teaching of proper Wikipedia usage to elementary
schoolchildren. It is worth mentioning that through cooperation with
academics in a variety of universities and colleges throughout Israel,
hundreds of articles are written each year by students in courses. Thus
students write Wikipedia articles as part of their degrees, sometimes even
in lieu of exams or final papers. The Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv
University recently conducted a special 2-credit course on the subject of
Wikipedia and medicine.

Survey results published last week as part of Wikipedia Academy 2014 Israel
revealed that 84% of the Israeli public relies heavily on Wikipedia and 74%
say that it provides all the information they need. Over one third of the
population expressed interest in learning to write for Wikipedia.
