Yes the Dell Latituden D630 has a serial port, actually the only
Dell laptop I could find with a serial port. I just did buy this
D630 and went through the market, it was just about the only one

correctly under Vista.
I've tried just plugging in the cable and letting Vista install the drivers
automatically. I've also tried downloading the drivers from prolific and
loading them manually, and finally

The only 'wrong' thing is that you did not heed the information in the
Firmware section of the Errata sheet - which points out those things not
yet available. Method 3 is not yet implemented. Use one of the other
methods until the supporting firmware has been released.

The first thing to check is the bandpass filter for 80 meters. Check
that L5 is properly soldered and has a value of 33 uHy. Recheck the BPF
peaking using a transmit power of 1.5 watts.
Normally, the response across 80 meters is rather flat, and I suspect
that you have a problem

That means less noise, and therefore more usable audio range on the
transmit signal. Your audio should sound more quiet on the air (other
than your speaking) - for those who operate exclusively CW it will have
no impact at all, but those with microphones and AFSK signals should
find a

2. Tapping multifunction encoder knobs briefly displays the present
value (SHIFT/LO, HI/WIDTH, SPEED/MIC, CMP/PWR). Double-tap to display
the existing parameter (since this switches first to the alternate,
then back).
