Hi all,
I am currently using my K2 with a Heil HC-5 insert to good effect on
DX. I was wondering though if I should build a little pre-amp for the
mic? I notice there is a circuit on the website and I wondered if I
would gain anything from building it? I don't want to put too much into
the K2
Vic and others that may be wondering on this. I use auto-detect with a hand
key and paddles on the same line. The two diodes are mounted under my
paddles. I have never had a spurious long dash or any other problem with
the paddles, but I have noticed that if the contact on the hand key gets a
Hello Ian,
I have used a Heil HC-5 element from the very beginning with my K2, and
have always found that I needed to shout into it in order for it to work
satisfactorily. However, that same microphone, a Heil HM-10, worked very
well with my '746PRO.
In my case, I found that the levels were
Hi Ian,
Check http://www.qsl.net/la3za/K2/modAny.html where all official and
unofficial K2 mods are listed.
The Heil mic elements do not offer enough drive and you´re about 6-10 db
down without a modification. Several solutions are described, yet there is
a simple mod you can make for
Ian,
The mic-preamp works very well. I built one for my IC-765 which needed some
extra help using the HC-5. I do not use SSB very much with the K2, but I did
notice you have to yell pretty loud using the HC-5 with the K2. The mods do
work also, but the little amp works great too.

I've never had such a problem, even after 36 hours contesting. Have a look
to the diodes and the connections !

I built a little keying adapter in a small can to do this.
It has two jacks, one for my paddles and one for the
keying lead from my TR Log laptop. The laptop jack in mono,
and the paddles jack is stereo. The output is
a three wire lead to the key jack in the K2.
Inside the can are the two
Hi Folks,
I am available for build, upgrade, alignment and repair of Elecraft kits.
I have built 12 K2s, 2 K1s and one KX1 so far, and have done upgrades and
mods on many more. My prices are reasonable and I guarantee my workmanship
for 90 days (shipping not included on warranty work). See
Thanks to everyone who commented on the use of the K2's auto-detect feature.
The consensus is that it works quite well, although some mentioned problems with
straight keys or bugs with dirty contacts.
I have encountered problems caused by contact bounce from bugs with many modern
rigs,
Hi guys,
This discussion reminds me of something I've been wanting to for a
while. I don't use the internal keyer in the K2 but prefer my
own keyer and I'd like to parallel my computer/cw keyboard with it. What
kind of circuit would this require or could I just parallel
the lines together?
I have had a D-104 in use for many years and I got to thinking that 104 mic
has lots of room for both HC-4 and HC-5 elements along with a spdt switch.
I might even build the preamp that was just mentioned in another thread. I
don't want to alter my good working mic so I am looking for one that
Just parallel them together, no problem.

Lou,
It is likely that you can simply parallel the devices (connect to the K2 DOT
input) and set the K2 for 'INP Hand', as long as one device does not
interfere with any of the others.
Before attempting it, do check for the presence of voltage from each device
to be connected. If you have
Hi John - I don't have an extra but I am doing exactly what you describe -
have both cartridges in the same D-104 head with a mini toggle switch
mounted in the rounded side of the head down near the plug assembly. A
simple flick of my finger to switch from one to the other.
I'm using that head
