OK, I just crossed that bridge a few days ago. I didn't think I had a BFO.
Look for an envelope marked E850099 and/or 41UH INDUCTOR, 5%. Or it may say

I am looking for a backpack rig (3-5 day backpacking trips). I know the
KX1 is more portable but I am wondering specifically about the receiver
performance between the two. Also in regards to the K2. I know the K2 is
a better reciever but I'm coming from one disappointment. I purchased

Jeremy,
I own a K2 and a KX1, and have some opinions; but I think there is no
hard and fast answer.
The K2 is superb; its receiver is about as good as my Icom IC-7800; no
joke. Yes there are a few conditions in which I prefer the Icom, but to
me, that is an amazing feat given the price
Hello All
I have started carrying out Alignment and Test, Part2 have hit a snag.
It says that the frequency reading in the VCO test should be in the 8 to
10 MHz range. Mine is stable at 7.726MHz the manual says refer to
troubleshooting. Where in troubleshooting?
Also I don't read 6V at
Q's = 19 (18 on 20, 1 on 40)
BB's = 14
SPC = 6
Score = 798(?) I'm a little confused about the scoring but I think this
is right. Q's x (3 x # BB's)?

If it were me, I'd take the KX1. Smaller, lighter, perfect
for a 3-5 day backpack trip.
But then, that's just my .02c

Does anyone have an extra KAT2 (with or without the top cover and battery)
left over from a KPA100 upgrade that they are not planning on using anymore
and would be willing to part with?

Dave,
Your best chance is to look carefully at the thermistor board - such
problems usually originate there - it is easy to create a solder bridge on
that small board. You can often spot it by removing the front panel and
control board and peek at the solder side of the board - if not, removal
Hello!
I've been asking for comments about K2 compliance with Heil pro set plus
(standard, not Ic-version).
KSB2 worked when I built it and installed it. I use foot switch to key
the radio. SSbC is set to 4:1 or 3:1 when working. 2:1 was reported to
be too less.
When using VOX I had to
Hi Everyone,

If properly built, the K1 has a somewhat better receiver than the KX1 in most
areas. The advantages of the K1 receiver over that of the KX1 are:
(1) Bands of operation.
The transformer is to break the ground loop of having the computer ground
connected to the RF chassis ground of the radio and producing possible
ground loop currents. In that case, you defeat the transformer if you
connect the computer case to radio case.
The computer case ground should be
I got a K1 instead of a KX1 mainly because most of my field trips are day
packing or car camping, not backpacking. The K1 is an exceptional performer,
but I if my interests were in a backpacking rig, I would have gone with the
KX1.
I haven't been backpacking in a long time, but, from experience,
I recall recently there was a discussion here (hope it was here and not on

One was Ron Stark, KU7Y, who's CD's are available on QRP ARCI in The Toy
Store.
But I can't recall for the life of me who the other

I just got back from my annual trek to Martha's Vineyard, but operating
the K2 was a bit different this year. My home qth situation does not
accommodate an ATU very well, so I avoided getting the KAT2. And, of
course, once I added the KPA100, that issue seemed to become moot.
However, when
I've owned both a K1 and KX1 and I find the receiver performance to be about
the same. For backpacking, the KX1 wins hands down.

I am in the process of building a K2 with the 100 watt amp for another
ham.
He also needs to drive a linear. I also apologize as I have not looked on
the website. Can someone point me to some information about this so it will
be linear ready when I get it done?

Thanks to so all those (many, many) who have responded. Got a lot of
positive feedback on both. I purchased a KX1 today.
Thanks!

It was reported:
... the KX1 wins handsdown for backpacking...
Strange! Before the KX1 came out, the K1 was generally acknowledged as the
best multi-band backpacking rig available. It is no less suitable for that
task today.
If one is happy with the limited number of bands covered by the
