When the KX-1 is tuned to a frequency several KHz outside the ham band, the transmitter is automatically disabled and all you get is the sidetone when it is keyed. I think the display will say Error when keyed. Sorry I didn't make this clear before. I didn't mean to suggest that one should

Mike, Please clarify why one would want to turn off SSB when doing filter alignment. It is normal to align the SSB filters as well as the CW filters when doing a complete job. If you have the KAF2 installed, you may want to turn off the low pass filter so it will not roll off the high frequency
