Good Evening All
I have started construction of my K2 and have accidentally damaged the 40 pin
IC socket for the Control board microcontroller IC.
While removing a stray piece of solder from one of the contacts, I bent one of
the wiping contacts in the top of the socket.
Is it better to

I had two personal replies, from K6DGW and GM4ESD, thanks guys. I think the
crux is that these are air cored coils, so the coupling between turns and
therefore the detrimental effect is lower. Unlike the case of say a mains
transformer, where the core ensures tight coupling, so a shorted turn
Occasionally I get repeat entries on my in-box and they keep re-filling no
matter how many times I delete them. I hadn't timed it to say it happens
weekly, but that sounds about right. I went to do my email by webmail
during those occasions and it did not re-fill from that source, but when
I have used a large, shallow aluminium tray similar to the cooker tray
mentioned and I place all components in the tray still within their a/s
bags. With my hands in the tray and the external connections to soldering
iron etc thro wrist strap etc, this is my defence against ESdischarge.
David, thank you for your comment. As you will see below the first part of
your message which arrived via the Elecraft route appears to be missing. I
have also noted from people's replies posted to the List that a significant

I'd be happy to assemble a list, or support anyone else to do this.

I don't claim to be an expert on the topic, but I
think it has to do with the manner the coil is wound

Richard,
Remove the socket and replace it. While attempting to repair one pin
may work, it can lead to intermittent behavior.
If you do not have good de-soldering tools, attempting to remove it
intact can be difficult. Break the plastic case apart with diagonal
cutters or whatever tool
G'day Chris,
You can put me down on the list. Happy builder/owner of K2 s/n 5492, XV144,
T1, N-gen and XG-1 as well. I doubt there are enough of us to qualify for an
elecraft century club award but you never know. I'd invite the ZL's too.

Iron is only needed at lower frequencies to accomplish the same thing (or
close to it).
One practical reason to short out unused turns is that if they are left

I am working on a project that I would like to mount on a spare K2 top

Guys,
My sincerest apologies! RFTB tonight, as usual.
I've been pre-occupied all day - my mother-in-law broke her hip and is

Thanks for your indulgence!

Hi Guys,
Let me start by thanking every one who responded to my request for a

points. I noticed that some crimpers were listed with dyes or jaws with
no coax designation just three digit dye sizes like .148, .259 or .291
