I can't comment on the K3 specifically, but I once had something very
similar happen with an Icom rig, and the problem turned out to be leaky
gates in the finals, unfortunately (they had to be replaced)... though in
my case the power output was a little more random compared to what you're
seeing.
A couple of basic things...
1) Perform the TX gain calibration (see the Owner's manual)
2) Adjust the audio level from the sound card (if applicable) and the
line-in level on the K3 until you see 5 bars on the ALC meter when
transmitting JT65.

components in the K2PAKIT made little difference in the symptoms.
So, back to square one...

That is the behavior that results from insufficient audio drive to the K3 -
Use TX TEST so you do not bother others with a signal on the air, then
adjust the audio drive until the ALC meter indicates 4 bars solid with

Or if you don't want to or can't easily alter the antenna, lengthen it

lengthen the wire to 86ft you will have a 5/8th wavelength that you should

Yes - back in the early days of the K3 it did the opposite, it would transmit

it was not as marked as you are experiencing. There might be a

For one thing, your TX Buffer output is lower than expected. That may
or may not be a problem.
More important is that there is input to the Bandpass Filter, but no
output. That may be an indication that the frequency of the signal is
not correct.

Hello!
I just received a telephone call from Thomas Bohnet in Fairbanks, AK. He is the

Tom,
If you know the original purchaser (and to help, the approximate date of
purchase), the folks at Elecraft may be able to dig that out of their
files. Send an email to sa...@elecraft.com to inquire. A new serial
number sticker can be made for a nominal price ($1 or $2 if I recall).
Bryan,
I don't believe you can determine the original serial number without the
original packing slip/invoice. Alternatively, Elecraft -may- be able to look
it up, if you have the original owner's name and/or call sign. If you -can-
determine the serial number, a replacement sticker can be

Hi Barry,
When used with the K3, The KPA and the KAT get band data (BAND3-BAND0) from the
K3. The Kenwood doesn't put out band data like that but the KPA can interrogate
(poll) the Kenwood, or listen to the traffic between the Kenwood and a logging
program to find frequency/band information.
Hmmm can't be too many scrap yards up there...
Seriously if he's going to scrap them why ask so much?

John,
It is very unlikely that the only think wrong with your amp is the

sounds like you have, you'll probably have at least the D16 failure and
possibly some of the resistors at the base of the tubes, and maybe even
